So my current main project is just trying to sort all the Sonic media I’m familiar with and all games with a plot into one line of cherry picked canon to make a cohesive story out of a tangled ball of thread.
Today I’m focusing on how I would write out the game Shadow the Hedgehog if I wrote it as a single story and the ultimate decision I made was to use a random number generator to pick potential story paths to create that illusion of distorted truth and really messing with one’s brain, basically trapping him in a weird hallucinogenic time loop where Black Doom tries to get what he wants. I kept randomising stories until all 10 final bosses were accounted for, since, you know, you have to get all 10 potential endings to unlock the final story. So time looped Shadow has to make both all the worst and best decisions in order to escape.
I just want you all to know the majority of the ones the randomiser picked end dark aligned, there’s two full dark ending routes in there and the time loop ends with the route where Shadow goes full hero because he fancies Amy.
Also after the first time in Cryptic Castle (where he goes neutral), every subsequent visit to that level ends in helping Amy.
I can’t believe my Shadow retelling just turned into a story of Shadow slowly realising he’s in love with Amy-

cressida-jayoungr replied to this post:
Wait, what's this about squirrels? That's one I haven't run across!
It's one of the many factoids from Tolkien's essay on Númenor in The Nature of Middle-earth! He talks about gender and relationships with animals there:
they [Númenórean women] were generally nearer to men than is the case with most races in stature and strength, and were agile and fleet of foot in youth. Their great delight was in dancing (in which many men also took part) at feasts or in leisure time ... But nearly all women could ride horses, treating them honourably, and housing them more nobly than any other of their domestic animals. The stables of a great man were often as large and as fair to look upon as his own house. Both men and women rode horses for pleasure ... and in ceremony of state both men and women of rank, even queens, would ride, on horseback amid their escorts or retinues ... The Númenóreans trained their horses to hear and understand calls (by voice or whistling) from great distances; and also, where there was great love between men or women and their favorite steeds, they could (or so it is said in ancient tales) summon them at need by their thought alone. So it was also with their dogs. For the Númenóreans kept dogs, especially in the country, partly by ancestral tradition, since they had few useful purposes any longer ... It was men rather than women who had a liking to keep dogs as "friends". Women loved more the wild (or "unowned") birds and beasts, and they were especially fond of squirrels, of which there were great numbers in the wooded country. ...The woods of Númenor abounded in squirrels, mostly red, but some dark brown or black. These were all unafraid, and readily tamed. The women of Númenor were specially fond of them. Often they would live in trees near a homestead, and would come when invited into the house. (NOME 325-326, 335-6)
Conclusion: a) Númenóreans were, as a people, significantly larger than other humans, b) Númenórean women were more similar in size and strength to the men of their people than is usual among humans, and c) these gigantic women liked to befriend normal squirrels.

Most Crushed on Male Harry Potter Characters: A Study (Version 1)
I was wondering what male characters from Harry Potter (including Hogwarts Legacy and Fantastic Beasts) are the most crushed on. When I couldn’t find anything online that answered my question, I decided to take it into my own hands and research it for myself. I looked at reader-insert fanfics and thirst trap videos on 4 websites (AO3, Tumblr, Wattpad, and TikTok) since I think it’s the most effective way of seeing how many people want to be the focus of a Harry Potter boy’s affection. Here are the results as of August 6, 2023!
Note: I researched other characters (ex. Matteo Riddle, Charlie Weasley) that weren’t listed here, but some of them didn’t make the cut on any website. I’ve also never seen Fantastic Beasts or played/watched videos of Hogwarts Legacy, so it’s possible that I missed loved characters from those parts of the Harry Potter universe.
The second version of this study is now out! You can find it here!
Tumblr media
*GIF isn't mine
AO3
What I did: I researched how many works are under “(male character)/reader” and “(male character)/you.” The number of works under these tags differed, so the number in parentheses is the higher number of works between those 2 tags. I only counted pairings with at least 300 works.
Results:
Draco Malfoy (1,414 works)
Severus Snape (1,013 works)
Sirius Black (890 works)
Remus Lupin (817 works)
Sebastian Sallow (710 works)
Fred Weasley (698 works)
George Weasley (627 works)
Harry Potter (401 works)
James Potter (332 works)
Newt Scamander (326 works)
Tom Riddle/Voldemort (316 works)
Ominis Gaunt (310 works)
Potential problems: I think the AO3 results are the most accurate since for the most part, all reader-insert works are under only 1 name of the character, not something like “Snape/reader” and then “Severus Snape/reader.” However, I did notice that there were sometimes works with 2 characters where 1 character had a relationship with the character, while the other character was in a loveless arranged marriage or some sort of non-con relationship that the author didn’t mean to romanticize.
TUMBLR
What I did: I researched “(male character) x reader,” “(male character) x you,” and “(male character) x y/n.” The number of followers under these tags sometimes differed, so I recorded the highest number of followers between the 3 tags. I only counted characters that had a reader-insert tag with at least 2k followers. Some characters are tied because Tumblr only shows followers in thousands, not the specific number.
Results:
Draco Malfoy (13k followers)
Sirius Black and Remus Lupin (11k followers)
Fred Weasley and James Potter (8k followers)
Newt Scamander and George Weasley (6k followers)
Regulus Black and Tom Riddle (5k followers)
Cedric Diggory and Severus Snape (4k followers)
Theodore Nott and Sebastian Sallow (3k followers)
Ron Weasley, Neville Longbottom, and Ominis Gaunt (2k followers)
Potential problems: Because Tumblr doesn’t have a set tag for reader-insert works, I had to look up characters under multiple names, like “Remus Lupin x reader” and “Lupin x reader.” I had to exclude Harry’s tags because a lot of the works under those tags were mixed with reader-inserts or other characters. Also, there are probably some thirst photos/GIFs on Tumblr for male characters that aren’t tagged as a reader-insert.
WATTPAD
What I did: I researched “(male character) x reader,” (male character) x you, and (male character) x y/n. The number of results under these tags sometimes differed, so I recorded the highest number of results between the 3 tags. I only counted characters that had a reader-insert tag with at least 10k results. Some characters are tied because Wattpad doesn’t show the exact number of results.
Results:
Draco Malfoy (68.5k results)
Neville Longbottom (53.4k results)
Newt Scamander (50.9k results)
Cedric Diggory (49.3k results)
Ominis Gaunt (37.5k results)
Ron Weasley (26.3k results)
Remus Lupin (19.4k results)
Sirius Black and James Potter (18.9k results)
Severus Snape (18.4k results)
Fred Weasley (15.9k results)
George Weasley (12.8k results)
Theodore Nott (11k results)
Tom Riddle (10.7k results)
Potential problems: I don’t think these results are very accurate. Because Tumblr doesn’t have a set tag for reader-insert works, I had to look up characters under multiple names, like Remus Lupin x reader and Lupin x reader. I had to exclude Harry again because his results pulled up results for other characters. Similarly, searches for other characters pulled up reader-insert stories written only for a different character.
TIKTOK
What I did: I looked up “(male character) thirst” on TikTok and filtered the results to show videos in order of highest number of likes to least number of likes. The first video wasn’t necessarily a thirst video of that character, so I had to manually search for the thirst video with the highest number of likes. I only recorded characters where their thirst video with the highest number of likes had at least 10k likes. Some are tied because the same video covered multiple characters.
Results:
Harry Potter (3m likes)
Newt Scamander (447.6k likes)
Neville Longbottom (295.4k likes)
Dean Thomas (206.9k likes)
Cedric Diggory (131.6k likes)
Fred, Ron, George, and Bill Weasley (123.8k likes)
Draco Malfoy (91.6k likes)
Severus Snape (57.5k likes)
Remus Lupin (21.4k likes )
Lucius Malfoy (21k likes)
Sirius Black and James Potter (17.6k likes)
Potential problems: There were so many problems with finding videos on TikTok that romanticized the character, so I would take the TikTok results with a grain of salt. It was really frustrating to research on TikTok LMAO. I originally just looked up videos with the name of the character, but it took forever to find a thirst video and it was sometimes difficult to tell if it was an actual thirst. For example, there were some edits of Snape that showed him as a kid and a grown-up and it wasn’t clear if the creator was romanticizing him. For this reason, I know that the rankings I listed are most likely inaccurate because there are definitely thirst videos of characters that weren’t labeled as thirst videos. Also, for the results I gave for Harry, I looked up “Harry Potter thirst” and chose the video that @miwallbank duetted and had the most likes.
COMBINING THE NUMBERS
For accuracy reasons, I left out the numbers of results from TikTok because I think that my research was inaccurate for the most part.
Draco Malfoy (approximately 82,914 admirers)
Newt Scamander (approximately 57,226 admirers)
Neville Longbottom (approximately 55,400 admirers)
Cedric Diggory (approximately 53,300 admirers)
Ominis Gaunt (approximately 39,810 admirers)
Remus Lupin (approximately 31,217 admirers)
Sirius Black (approximately 30,790 admirers)
Ron Weasley (approximately 28,300 admirers)
James Potter (approximately 27,232 admirers)
Fred Weasley (approximately 24,598 admirers)
Severus Snape (approximately 23,413 admirers)
George Weasley (approximately 19,427 admirers)
Theodore Nott (approximately 14,000 admirers)
Tom Riddle (approximately 5,316 admirers)
Regulus Black (approximately 5,000 admirers)
Sebastian Sallow (approximately 3,710 admirers)
Do I think these final results are accurate? Most likely not, so take the final results with a grain of salt. Also, these results aren’t necessarily indicative of how much a character is crushed on since there are probably plenty of people who don’t write fanfiction or follow tags on their loved character. I might do this again, but this is what I have for now. Thanks for reading!

All my favs are the ones who aren't from Japan💀
As a huge bsd fan, I admire how commited you are to the blog. Have a good day, as well as a happy new year!!!!! I´ve been filling out your annual surveys since 2020, and I´m glad that you still carry them every year. Thanks!!
BSD Bibliophile is generally such a cool and useful resource, I’ve used it both for fun as well as for school work (I didn’t have my physical copy of Akutagawa’s works with me and needed to cite “Spinning Gears”/“Cogwheels”). Thank y’all for everything you do!
BSD-Bibliophile, the website and the Tumblr posts have been invaluable to me in my literary journey. I thank you so much for your service to the community, I can't express how happy I am that the lesser known or completely unknown authors are getting more western attention. Thank you so much!!
comments on my answers: I used to own more books but when I emigrated I could bring only one. The book I brought here from Russia is Dazai’s stories collection. Since many of the books are available in Japanese for free, I also read them on aozora app.
Finding Japanese literature from these authors is actually pretty difficult in Scotland. Also, Dazai and Nakahara are such fangirl answers, but I actually adore both of their works
First of all, sorry for my horrendous English 💀 I love this page so much! I was absolutely lost as to where to read the translations of the LN, wan! And others, it had been so helpful for me when it comes to my time enjoying BSD. Also, I enjoyed a lot that one section of like fun facts of the real authors and I was so happy when I found the bunch of English translation of the real authors, it really made my day.Now when I want to read a book of the real authors, or read something BSD related I know where ti search for first! I absolutely adored all the work you put into this (or the team (?) I don't know how mane people is running the page:(), thank you for all of it, keep going! 💗
for the images included on posts; the only thing i don't like about them is that they're a bit too tall (making the post look too long as well). i think images would still be nice if they were longer width than height! also, thank you for all of the work you do running bsd bibliophile! you've put together such an amazing and invaluable resource for bsd fans and non-fans alike.
Great work!
Have a nice day!!
Hello! - princy :3
Honestly, I would read stuff by the authors but I just don't have that kind of money
hope you are having a great day!
I absolutely love BSD it made me get into japness literature, as well did Bungo To Alchemist. ALSO BSD LIGHT NOVEL ON TOP!!
I appreciate the work you do! It has really expanded my taste in literature, and for that I am very grateful <3
I appreciate your work🥰😘❤
I believe that having more of a separation from the BSD characters and the real life authors in the bibliophile’s posts would be highly appreciated from a lot of other people; and not just myself
I bought Summer of the Ubume by Kyougoku Natsuhiko when it still was in print in English. I took it with me when rereading and lost my copy. I’m kicking myself years later for not buying a used copy for $50. Earlier this year I was able to borrow a copy from a library and took a picture of every page so I can keep it with me that way. I was delighted to find a scan PDF of the novel when your tumblr linked stories to read for Halloween. Thank you for sharing and thank you whomever made that scan. The BSD Gaiden novel is my favorite thing from BSD and I’m deeply thankful to the person who shared their amazing fan translation. It’s led me to buying all of the English translations of Ayatsuji’s works, plus the two volumes of the manga. I’m a newer follower of your tumblr, but have enjoyed reading each new quote and seeing ones I’ve recognized. Thank you for your work, it’ll definitely be inspiration when I want to read more Japanese literature.
I enjoy the BSD-Bibliophile page on tumblr! I like reading parts (?) of the authors' works and i've become more interested in their works. Thanks for all that you do!! :D
I have the page bookmarked in my browser so that I can check it out from time to time. Also I love Chuuya
I honestly love this website like literally. This bibliophile has helped me Soo much like finding the authors I want to read and learning more about the authors featured. Honestly, words can't describe how grateful I am that this site being created to help accessing literature more easier
I just want you to know that i adore all the effort that goes into this page and that its (In my opinion) a staple of the fandom
I look forward to the survey every year to see how far I’ve come in interacting with Japanese literature. Thanks for running the blog and library, it’s an amazing resource. Best, Comical tuber
I love BSD bibliophile so damn much, whatever BSD related author work and BSD manga (both wan and anthologies) weren't possible for me to find this easily. This website is the work of art. My favourite place
I love BSD-Bibliophile Online Library! Thank you for managing it!
I love the 'recently published' section!
I love your blog and what you do for the fandom! It really scratches the itch which is my obsession with BSD and classic/20th C literature <3
I love your site so much, it's made it so easy to get more info about Japanese authors and figure out what else I want to read. Thank you so much!i love your work!!
I personally believe that using advertisement through mangas and animes specially bsd connects me to the world of books one more time Also I’m grateful for free online websites for putting pdfs of books that I can’t easily have access in my country
I really appreciate all the information you have online here. I have learned a lot and I admire you and your passion. This might sound weird but I truly hope I can collect and read Japanese Literature and organise information as you do when I am older.
I really like your blog, keep it up :3
I really want to read Q's Dogra Magra but I think it's only been translated completely in french so far. Thank you so much for your database! It makes it so much easier to access learning.
I think it's so cool that you're doing these surveys! I think this bibliophile project is just awesome in general tho :) (also dang its hard to choose a fave char) lots of <3 <3 <3
I want to read many more books of the real authors so i cannot yet judge who my favorite will be. Dazai's works are the easiest to get access to in my country and I got Chuuya's poems as a gift so I am still hunting for more :)
I want to read some of their books but i'm to scared of telling my mom this fact ┻━┻︵ヽ(`Д´)ノ︵ ┻━┻
I wasn't sure if that question about reading Japanese lit was about reading it in Japanese or not
I will try to get more into this Library ! It's really good and good job for the the tumblr blog, i love it !
I would like if the quotes didn't repeat a lot– Like finding more than 4 posts of the same quote is weird to me at least... instead of doing the same authors in repetition, do more characters that have been published a few times in the blog 🙌🏻
I’m a BSD anime fan who would like to try some of the works by the authors the characters are based on but hasn’t gotten around to figuring out a good entry point for people who don’t usually read literature
I'm new to the fandom, but I'm looking forward to check out any translation that are available (I plan to read at least the work the ability is referring to for a start)
I'm so thankful for your website making Japanese literature available, as I live in a somewhat rural area. Keep up the good work!
I'm very grateful for the resources that had been accumulated by bsd bibliophile, really, I've only been able to nurture my interest in Japanese literature and grow to be passionate about it because I had such easy access to the translated works so thanks a lot for the work you do!
I've just decided to make use of the online library and I'm very excited! I'll check of Oda and Nikolai first because they are most interesting to me :)
i've remembered about the bibliophile purely by chance. in a span of a single night, i've read another media that draws heavy inspiration from japanese literature – ""hashihime of the old book town"". i say ""finished"", yet i'm only done with a single route of this novel. i plan on seeing it through the end. i am enamoured by this script. it's as If i've found true literature again. i truly do not know why im saying this. forgive me If my words are unclear in my ramblings. i am simply here to pick up some kyusaku. maybe then i will be able to fully unravel the fabric of this novel, thread by thread.
I've used this blog to help open myself up to more Japanese literature for years now, ever since I first got into bad, and I can't thank you enough for running this!
Just followed a little while ago so my answers probably aren't that helpful, sorry! I'm looking forward to going through your blog though! Hope you have a nice day/night! :)
Just started following the blog recently tbh, but I’m excited to check out the online library!
Keep up the good work!! :)

Love your blog and everything you do!!!
My 1st fav character is Atsushi, but Chuuya's also on top :))
My book count is prolly squewed as I had to go off of memory (since I left many behind in the US at my parents house). I counted Japanese fiction from non BSD authors but not manga and light novels. Also I used to watch & read BSD but no longer do so, but still enjoy Japanese literature.

Thank you for your hard work and efforts to share and compile the legally available works of the BSD authors! Your site has allowed me to appreciate BSD as well as Japanese literature itself a lot more.
Thank you for your hard work o7
Thank you for your hard work! Have a nice day:)
Thank you for your hard work! Was it not BSD-Bibliophile I'd be completely lost with researching irl authors and their art of writing. You helped me lots of times.

Thanks for all your work! It's because of you guys that I've been able to read as much as I have (and will continue to do)!!!
Thanks for this resource, it's helpful as a Universal Literature student
the online library has really helped in finding japanese literature
The online library helped me so much in getting to know more about japanese literature thanks a lot for you ♥️
The website has been of great help to find my way around the literature! Truly a godsend! Keep up the great work
The world of literature is a big one & some of it aren't really that accessible. It's great that there are more people translating these previously untranslated works so we can see just how unique each author's style is
There were questions asking for "favorite Japanese BSD author", but those questions were very misleading. First of all, the characters in BSD aren't authors; they don't do or haven't done writing for living or anything along the lines. Secondly, said questions made it sound more like you were asking for whether I like Asagiri, Harukawa, Kanai, Hoshikawa or some other creators who are credited as authors of BSD. They are BSD authors, not the characters like you made it sound like in your questions. If you are asking about real-life authors who happen to have characters based on them in BSD, leave out BSD from the questions, or specify them with something like "Which Japanese author do you like the most, who has a character based on them in BSD?". Last I would like to suggest adding option to the question regarding BSD media, where people who are ex-BSD fans could specify that they've been previously fans, but don't consume or follow the series anymore. The option could be literally just "Previously have been BSD fan, but don't consume any of the official content anymore". I'm pretty sure there are plenty of people like me who have enjoyed BSD in the past, but now just enjoy Japanese literature alone or through some other medias that have nothing to do with BSD. Thanks for the annual survey as always. It's been interesting to see how much the fandom reads and who are the authors who people read in the first place. I wish more people would pay attention to some less popular authors, as there are plenty of hidden gems and your favorite author doesn't have to be the same as your favorite BSD character.
there's a redditor in r/templeofes who's working on translating dogra magra and they're working very hard :D
This blog is a national treasure, thank you all <3
This initiative is so beautiful, thank you for all the hard work.
This website is amazing!!!!!! It’s hard to find Japanese classics in America but this list has them all ❤️
Tumblr doesn't show me many of your posts, so I will try to interact more to see them ^.^
Very cool survey! Thanks
Well have have read many of Fyodor dostoevsky books but not any Japanese novels or poems
When I first got into bsd your online library was an invaluable resource and the only reason I have read works by bsd Japanese authors. I use it less now because my hyperfixation has waned but I still really appreciate all that you do and the resources made available to fans. Thank you!
will check the BDS-Bibliophile website <3 hope u have a nice day
yooo!! thanks for this super awesome survey!! happy easter <33 -a migrating tumblrer
You’re one of the best resources I have for BSD and JP literature. I’m eternally grateful for all the work you do

I’m still obsessed with Ken Womack deciding a cartoon strip character was Paul on 9 May 1969.
Mainly because it seems like a misinterpretation of an image based on a misrepresentation of the situation?
Here’s what Womack wrote thanks to @muzaktomyears.
To summarise: Womack says the other three cornered Paul, insisting he appoint Klein. Paul started to lose him cool when the others accused him of creating needless roadblocks and wanting to appoint his relatives, Paul refused to sign, there’s a quote from Paul saying that was the night we broke The Beatles and that it was the liberty bell moment and… that’s it, end of chapter with some musing about Mal’s heartbreak and the pic of ‘Paul’ (i.e. Maisie) framed like this:
Tumblr media
But… that seems a pretty lopsided view of how it went???
According to You Never Give Me Your Money, on 8 May the other three had signed with Klein without Paul’s knowledge (though George tried to tell him but he’d changed his phone number). The contract appointed ABKCO ‘exclusive business manager’ to Apple Corps Ltd ‘on behalf of The Beatles and The Beatles Group of Companies’. They knew at this point that Paul might not sign and it still needed to be ratified by the Apple board of directors (I.e. The Beatles).
On 9 May they gathered to do LIB overdubs and the other three tried to strong arm Paul into signing with Klein, bullying him and growing furious with him:
Tumblr media
You Never Give Me Your Money p. 130
[Note: Womack included a quote from Paul about the 15% stuff but not the bullied and ganged up on bit.]
Tumblr media
Rolling Stone
Edit to add one more:
Tumblr media
And In The End, p. 113
So in the above we have:
‘They really bullied me and ganged up on me’
‘The others grew furious, but McCartney held his ground’
‘They said “Oh, fuck off!” and they all stormed off’
‘Lennon, Harrison and Starkey lost their cool and unleashed an unsparing verbal assault on McCartney leaving him bruised and bleeding on the canvas’
(These are selective quotes so this post doesn’t get too long - more context here which is also the source for the below paragraph. Also the quotes are all Paul’s POV - I’d like to find what the others have said about this day).
John then called Klein, who was on his way to the airport, and Klein came back, lied to Paul about needing approval from the board of ABKCO to try and pressure him into signing and, according to Glyn Johns “… all that equipment was not enough to prevent me hearing Paul McCartney defend himself from Allen Klein’s attempt at bullying him into submission. It was extremely unpleasant to witness”.
[Note: Womack doesn’t actually mention Klein being there]
Paul continued to refuse but the other three carried on anyway. John and George signed the document ratifying their decision to appoint ABKCO exclusive business manager to Apple Corps Ltd. The unanimous agreement rule which The Beatles had always had was resoundingly broken (though they’d already broken it on 21 March 1969 when they appointed Klein against Paul’s wishes the first time).
The full page from You Never Give Me Your Money is here but here’s the really pertinent section:
Tumblr media
The signing of this resolution is surely the Liberty Bell moment and Womack doesn’t mention it, nor the fact that they’d previous made unanimous decisions.
So turning back to the cartoon - I imagine Paul was furious (YNGMYM mentions his rage on the next page in the context of drumming for Steve Miller), but from the sources above it seems that there were four other people who’d be equally good candidates for someone going apeshit and screaming at the top of their lungs.
Also, I don’t even know if Mal was there for these bits of unpleasantness (he’s not mentioned in YNGMYM).
Here’s Womack’s sources by the way:
Tumblr media
Womack’s source for the events of the day is Anthology p. 326. I went and looked it up. It’s all from Paul and Neil’s PoV and says the same as above - the closest thing is Paul says about anger is “there was a big argument and they all left, leaving me at the studio”. (Here free on the internet archive). The fact that it is all from Paul’s PoV suggests JGR haven’t spoken about this day but I could be wrong on that.
That twitter link is Paul saying that was the day the liberty bell cracked.
And here are my sources:
Rolling Stone article Why The Beatles Broke Up: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/why-the-beatles-broke-up-113403/
You Never Give Me Your Money by Peter Doggett
Amaralto’s quote from Sound Man by Glyn Johns book (god I wish he hadn’t turned the audio off. Why couldn’t he have MLH’s lack of ethics when it comes to recording the Beatles interactions?)
Beatles Bible 9 May 1969: https://www.beatlesbible.com/1969/05/09/mixing-get-back-album-inserts-2/#:~:text=It%20took%20place%20at%20Olympic,Klein%20as%20Apple's%20financial%20manager (which also doesn’t include about the signing of the resolution that evening. Is YNGMYM wrong about the day or is it just that no one thinks it specifically matters?)
Paul McCartney Project, 21 March 1969: https://www.the-paulmccartney-project.com/1969/03/allen-klein-becomes-business-manager-of-apple/(When they first appointed Klein as Business Manager when Paul was out of the country on his honeymoon. Paul sent a legal rep along but they went with majority - not unanimous - rule and voted Klein as Apple Business Manager).

It's a little crazy to watch the dungeon meshi fandom explode. As I say this, at the start of april 2024, there are 694 dungeon meshi fics on ao3 which looks like a modest number especially if you consider that the earliest fic in the tag is from 2017. But that's not taking into account that 544 of those 694 were posted 2024 and a whopping 299 were in march 2024 alone. And considering that the average lifetime of a fic from initial idea to writing and editing to publication is months we are actually at a very early point on the exponential curve, the real explosion is yet to come.
To illustrate my point, if you look a little more closely at the fics you'll realize the vast majority of them are oneshots, not multichaptered fics. Like. Much more compared to more established fandoms.
(If you want hard numbers for proof: the number of fics updated, not posted, in march 2024 was 326. That means that of all the fics updated in march ONLY 27 were fics posted earlier than march. And of the 299 posted, only 64 weren't oneshots. For all fics updated in march 72.1% were oneshots, 27.9% not. Compare that to a randomly chosen other fandom I'm in, Deltarune, where only 35.5% of the fics updated in march 2024 were oneshots, and 64.5% were not. The difference is staggering dunmeshi literally has twice as many oneshots comparetively)
And that's because oneshots are quicker to write, while a multichaptered fic takes much more planning. The longest fic in the dunmeshi fandom tag is currently only 67K words which is impressive but nothing compared to the behemoths you usually see occupying that spot. All those longfics? Those are still coming.

The Best Friends Deserve Bester
Chuck Taylor and Trent Beretta have been teaming together as The Best Friends since August 2013. In January 2014, they won PWG's Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament, becoming number one contenders to the PWG World Tag Team Championship. They lost their subsequent challenge against The Young Bucks at Mystery Vortex II. The only other time Chuck and Trent have competed for those titles was at 2019's Hand of Doom where they lost to The Rascalz. What that means is that out of seven teams who won the PWG DDT4 between 2007 and 2015, The Best Friends are the only ones to have never held the PWG World Tag Team Championship.
Tumblr media
Alright, well maybe they had better luck in NJPW. Trent's a four-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion with Rocky Romero. If Roppongi Vice can succeed, then I'm sure The Best Friends can... come fourth in the B Block in the 2017 World Tag League and finish eighth overall in the 2018 League.
Tumblr media
No, that make sense. Best Friends as a team have always been predominantly American based. What about their ROH run in 2017? I know they had a few title matches there.
Loss vs. The Young Bucks in ROH World Tag Team Championship tornado three way match at Best in the World 2017 (also featured War Machine)
Loss vs. Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks in ROH Six Man Tag Team Championship match at Global Wars 2017 Day 3 (teamed with Flip Gordon)
Loss vs. Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks in ROH Six Man Tag Team Championship match on ROH Wrestling Episode #326 (teamed with Rocky Romero)
Loss vs. Motor City Machine Guns in ROH World Tag Team Championship match at Final Battle 2017
Tumblr media
Ok, enough messing around. Let's get into the AEW run. Orange Cassidy has done a great job as International Champion. Kris Statlander is enjoying a good reign as TBS Champion. How have Chuck and Trent done?
Win vs. SCU and Private Party at Fyter Fest 2019 to advance to All Out for an opportunity at a first round bye in the AEW World Tag Team Championship tournament (good start)
Loss vs. Dark Order at All Out 2019 (who needs a first round bye anyway?)
Loss vs. SCU in first round of AEW World Tag Team Championship tournament (ah, that bye would have been handy)
Loss vs. Kenny Omega & Adam Page in a Number One Contender's Fatal Four Way (also featured The Young Bucks and Proud & Powerful) (got four-and-a-half stars from Dave Meltzer)
Loss to The Young Bucks in a Number One Contender's Battle Royal (not gonna list all the other teams)
Win vs. Private Party in a Number One Contender's match at Double Or Nothing 2020 (that's more like it)
Win vs. Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevara to remain number one contenders (yes, go on lads!)
Loss vs. Kenny Omega & Adam Page in AEW World Tag Team Championship match on Dynamite: Fyter Fest 2020 Day 1 (ah, damn it)
Loss to FTR in Number One Contender's Gauntlet match (again, not gonna list all the other teams)
Win vs. Proud & Powerful in a Parking Lot Fight (FIVE STARS BAYBEE!)
Loss to reDRagon in a Number One Contender's Battle Royal (AEW love them some battle royals)
Loss to The Young Bucks in a Number One Contender's Casino Tag Team Royale (this was literally the week after the previous battle royal)
Win w/Orange Cassidy vs. The Trustbusters in first round of AEW Trios Championship tournament (ooo, promising)
Loss w/Orange Cassidy vs. Adam Page & Dark Order in semi-final of AEW Trios Championship tournament (never mind, I guess)
Loss w/Orange Cassidy vs. Death Triangle for vacant AEW Trios Championship (can't tell me they shouldn't have won this one given PAC was already All-Atlantic Champion at the time)
Loss w/Orange Cassidy vs. Death Triangle in AEW Trios Championship match (one day lads, one day)
Loss w/Orange Cassidy to AR Fox & Top Flight in $300,000 Three Kings Christmas Casino Trios Battle Royal (we're really taking the piss now with these battle royals)
Loss to Jay Lethal & Jeff Jarrett in Revolution Tag Team Battle Royal (they were literally the runners up in this one, come on)
Loss w/Orange Cassidy vs. House of Black in AEW Trios Championship match (stop teasing me)
Loss vs. Aussie Open in IWGP Tag Team Championship match (they could have had a Japan run after all)
Loss w/Bandido vs. House of Black in AEW Trios Championship match (Bandido's cool but surely it's gotta be Orange for the eventual trios run)
Loss vs. Aussie Open in ROH World Tag Team Championship Fatal Four Way at ROH Death Before Dishonor 2023 (also featured Lucha Bros and The Kingdom) (another big win coming any day now)
Loss vs. Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli in Parking Lot Brawl (four-and-a-half stars for the Parking Lot sequel)
Win w/Orange Cassidy, Eddie Kingston & Penta vs. Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, and Proud & Powerful in Stadium Stampede at All In 2023 (the biggest of big wins, another four-and-a-half stars)
Loss to Dark Order in ROH Number One Contender's Battle Royal (great way to follow up that momentum after All In)
Loss to The Righteous in ROH Number One Contender's Fatal Four Way (also featured The Hardys and The Kingdom) (again, great follow up)
Tumblr media
Obviously there's been more matches in between the ones I highlighted. The Best Friends have had some good moments here and there but overall, it feels like there's been missed opportunities. No follow up after the initial Parking Lot Brawl. No Trios Championship run. Lost in the shuffle again following All In.
Tumblr media
The Best Friends deserve bester.

Tumblr media
The first few weeks – or rather months – went by in a blur. No-Face had quickly fallen into an unbreakable routine, no day drifting away from the normalcy she had created for herself. The pace at which she adapted to her new situation was surprising, and made even Price raise his brow, but he didn’t put much thought into it; he was just glad she wasn’t stuck by his side like a lost puppy.
At 06:00, she would wake up to the blaring alarm from her bedside table. Her hand would slap against the flat surface of the phone she was given, eagerly silencing the noisy machine. She would grumble to herself, her eyes seemingly stuck together; begging her to stay in just a little longer. She refused, practically jumping out of the bed and readying herself for the day ahead.
07:00; make her way to the mess hall and eat breakfast. Every day, without fail, she would roll her eyes at the whines of the other soldiers who would rather return to their beds. She usually sat alone, enjoying the peaceful silence that surrounded her.
07:20; enter the shooting range and – under supervision, of course – practise her aim. She cursed the first few times she had went there, missing the head of her target by millimetres. Yet she had quickly gotten the hang of it, and now she was proud to say she had not missed a single shot.
08:20; leave the shooting range and begin cleaning her weapons. The supervising officer, whom she recognised from her time of glorified imprisonment, remained in her vicinity. She was only glad he remained inconspicuous, doing his own thing to make it look as though he was in the same room by pure chance. The soldiers on base didn’t seem to pick up on the strange relationship between them, or that No-Face herself wasn’t a normal soldier; she was glad for it.
09:50; be forced to take a break by said supervising officer. Despite being her superior, he had a nervous aura around him. The poor lad stuttered over his words, and she could only assume he was much younger than her, likely with little previous experience. She wondered how good his fighting skills were – not that it mattered, as she would not attack the young man, but she had to wonder. Perhaps it was like bait, a simple ‘Hurt him. You know you can. Maybe you’ll get a chance to escape with him gone’. But she knew what would come next had that happened; she’d be dead.
10:05; make her way to the gym to regain the muscle mass she had lost over the years. Thankfully, due to her refusal to sit still and do nothing during her time of imprisonment, she had not lost as much muscle as she was afraid he had. Her strength was compromised by the years of inactivity, but she was sure she would get it back to where it once was.
11:25; be forced to take yet another break. She would be sure to send the supervisor a harsh glare and watch amused as he took a shaky step back. She doubted he knew what she had done in her past – the information strictly confidential – and yet he was already soiling his trousers. It was comical, to say the least.
11:40; practise gymnastics. Her agility was the more difficult skill to get back. Although she was making progress - her movements swift and almost expert-like – she knew they would never be as they once were. Not only because they had laid mostly dormant for a decade, but because she had aged. She wasn’t anywhere near what society would deem as ‘old’ but it still affected her, and she hated her body for it.
12:40; wallow in self-pity whilst making her way to Price’s office. Report her progress, and watch as he analysed every single word that left her mouth. The smoke from his cigar would always swim around him, and a glint would appear in his eyes every time she coughed in discomfort.
13:00; attempt to skip lunch. She wasn’t hungry. Her stomach felt full – bloated even. Perhaps it was due to the constant stress she was under for the past few weeks, or maybe it was the overcrowded base that ruined her appetite. Beforehand, she used to think being between people was ideal, but now as they surrounded her from every corner, she has never felt more on edge.
13:10; Have Price yell at her – not from anger or hatred, but from frustration after her supervising officer grassed on her. The captain would grab her by the forearm and drag her to the hall, watching her like a hawk to ensure she had finished her lunch.
13:30; go for a run around the base. Her muscles were aching at this point, but she ignored the voice that begged her to stop and catch her breath.
14:20; take a long break. The lack of sleep was starting to catch up with her. She would often make herself some tea and hope the hot beverage would wake her up.
15:00; begin a sparring session with the sergeants she had met on her first full day on base. Thomas Southwick, the taller of the two, was a nice man; he was energetic and full of life, often making jokes during their sessions. Dan Morris was more serious, his mouth always pressed into a thin line, and his eyes were blank, as though no emotion ever ran through them.
At 15:20, John would often enter the training area and watch from the corner with a judgemental eye. His words had progressively turned less harsh, and instead of insults disguised as words of advice, he gave his support. There was still a look of hatred in his eyes, but she quickly grew to understand this would never change. The wound was far too deep to forgive.
16:00; take a long walk around base. Eventually, as every single day, she would end up sitting on the floor and leaning against the brick wall of one of the barracks, watching as the sun began to set. The crisp January air bit at her skin, turning her nose cold and fingers numb, but she paid the shivers no mind.
Oftentimes, Thomas would join her in her solitude. The tall sergeant would usually come baring snacks, sharing a chocolate or two with her as he told her stories of his deployments. There was a certain warmth that radiated off him; a kindliness she hadn’t experienced in over a decade. He was a curious one, and sometimes found himself asking questions about her past. Each attempt was quickly shut down, but a feeling of guilt creeped up on her whenever she saw his dejected expression.
“It’s confidential,” she told him one day.
Those two words caused his head to snap in her direction, his brows furrowed deeply in confusion. “What d’you mean ‘confidential’?” he questioned, as though the meaning of the word was alien to him.
She hummed, the tip of her tongue wetting her lips, “I could get us both in trouble if I told you something I wasn’t supposed to.”
This time, he was the one who hummed, handing a bag of chocolates over to her. She happily took some and popped them in her mouth. “That why you got the nervous kid following you around everywhere?”
A small laugh left her at that, “You noticed?”
“Think I’m the only one who did,” he admitted with a laugh, “probably ‘cause I’m the only one who actually talks to you.”
A comfortable silence fell upon them after that. The sun was almost completely set, painting the evening sky in vivid oranges and reds. There was a distant screech of seagulls somewhere, and although most people on base loved to refer to the birds as ‘sky rats’, she could see the beauty in them. The freedom they symbolised was something she wished she had, and so she admired it every time a ruffle of feathers caught her attention.
“The confidentiality thing...” he spoke, “Does it have something to do with the way cap’s been treatin’ you?”
Her eyes widened at his words, “What do you mean?”
“He was rude to you when you first came in,” he told her, “He’s still got that look in his eye whenever you’re around. Like he’d rather have you gone.”
In truth, a part of her hoped her mind was fabricating those looks. She hoped she was overthinking it, that her imagination was playing tricks on her. But now that Thomas had confirmed her thoughts, unknowingly letting her know she wasn’t making them up, a certain tightness appeared in her chest.
“So?” he looked over at her, “Does it?”
She only nodded, a sad smile pulling at the corners of her lips.
There were times Price himself had joined her by the barracks. His boots were the first thing she would notice – or rather hear; loud stomps moving in her direction – in her peripheral vision. The black, polished leather reflected the bright moonlight, catching her attention.
She would hesitantly look over at him, and suddenly feel small under his hardened gaze. His arms were always crossed over his chest, and although his eyes were angled in her direction, it felt as though he was looking through her, rather than at her.
She felt herself grow tense in his presence, swallowing thickly as she analysed his posture. He looked as though he didn’t want to be there – as though he was forced to approach her by his superiors. She knew that was untrue, but the thought both amused and saddened her. The idea of his superiors scolding him enough to make him approach her was comical, but also devastating; she felt like she had some disease that he was trying his best to avoid. Except, in this case, the metaphorical disease was just her.
“You alright?” he eventually asked, his voice gruff from the many cigars he had smoked throughout his life.
She nodded with a small – almost silent – hum, “You don’t have to do this, sir,” she assured him.
“Do what?” he raised a brow.
She sent him a knowing look, shaking her head when her gaze eventually returned to the sky, “Act like you’re concerned about me. I’ll be fine, sir, you don’t have to speak to me when you don’t have to. I know you don’t like to, anyway.”
John let out a heavy breath and moved from his spot beside her, and towards the bench which was sitting in front of her. He rested his elbows against his knees and finally looked up at her; into her eyes.
“You’re right,” he admitted with a nod, “I don’t like talking to you. Every time I do, all I can think about is the past. But I need to get over it; you’ve changed, you’ve improved your ways, and you’re one of us now. I can’t be treating you like an outsider when you no longer are. I’m your Captain, and I’m supposed to be helping you, not making your life more difficult.”
She was taken aback by his words. That is not to say she wasn’t happy about his change in attitude, because she was. It was shocking, however, and she guessed the expression on her face made her feelings clear because the man before her let out a sharp exhale, and made sure his eyes were focused solely on her.
“Look,” he scratched his beard, “I won’t trust you until you prove that I can; until you show me you won’t betray us the first chance you get. Until then, I-” he took in a deep breath, “Until then, I will do my best to not let our past influence how I view you.”
Their eyes remained locked for a few, long seconds; hers focused on the blue of his iris, and whilst his remained dull, hers brightened just a little bit. A stiff, yet thankful smile pulled at her lips as she let out a pleased hum, “Thank you, captain.”
“You’ve got nothing to thank me for,” he told her, “I’ve been acting immature; not like a captain should, so enough of that.” He got up from his place on the bench and wiped his trousers from any dirt that clung to him, “From tomorrow onwards, we’re on the same team.”
She smiled at his words, eyes following him as he turned and began making his way away from her. His shoulders looked visibly less tense, and she could only assume this conversation was long overdue.
“Captain,” her voice stopped him in his tracks, “Thank you... for giving me a chance.”
His mouth opened, as if to say something, but he quickly abandoned the idea. He sent her a small nod instead, and swiftly walked away, leaving her be for the rest of the night.
By 18:30, she was back in the large hall and eating her dinner. She enjoyed the military food; the variety was larger than what she was used to. She didn’t shy away from exploring and trying out different things even when she wasn’t hungry, and soon found herself being particularly excited about flapjacks and brownies, making sure she had some every time they were available.
By 19:00, she was out once again, making her way to the small library in the corner of the base. It didn’t have a large variety of books, mainly holding academic, and non-fiction books, but it was better than sitting around and doing nothing for the rest of the day. In the end, she would end up staring off into space rather than focusing on the words on the pages, but the silence that always resided inside the building brought her great comfort.
At 20:45, she always made her way to the showers, where she let the hot water envelop her aching frame. And by the time 21:20 hit the clock, she was back in her room.
She never fell asleep right away, despite the fact her eyes begged for some rest. The sleep just never came, avoiding her like the plague as she battled with the exhaustion. It was as though she could feel the dark circles forming under her dried-out eyes, painting her skin in purples and light blues.
02:30 - 03:00; her body would finally begin to relax, and she would fall into the very much needed state of unconsciousness. She would awaken periodically - her eyes fluttering open - but she would not fully wake up until her alarm decided to ring in the early hours of the morning.
She had a routine.
Which is why she was confused when, on a random Tuesday, John Price cut her sparring session short and ordered her to follow him. Sending Thomas a tight-lipped smile, she got off the thick mat and trailed closely behind the captain, her breathing heavy from the work out.
They had made their way through the crowded buildings of the base until they reached his office. Her nerves were eating her alive by the time she entered the small room, only negative thoughts plaguing her mind. “Have I done something wrong, sir?” She asked, her back painfully straight as John made his way around the wooden desk and sat in his chair.
He shook his head at her and gestured at the chair beside her, urging her to sit down. “We’ve been cleared for a mission next week,” he let her know, “I need to know if you’re ready.”
She hummed in thought. On one hand, missions are what she was born for; what she was trained for most of her life. On the other hand, however, she was not exposed to them for the past decade, and despite the many hours of training, she felt as though she lacked experience.
Yet despite her worries - despite the fear – she nodded. “I am, sir.”
His eyes were set on her face, as if analysing every micro expression that appeared on her face. At times like these, she wished she could look into his mind and find out what he was thinking; whether his thoughts were positive, or indeed negative.
“Alright,” he gave her a firm nod and stood up from his seat. His hand clutched onto the duffel bag that sat by his leg, and he picked it up, moving it to the sofa that sat in the corner of the room.
She followed behind him, though keeping her distance as she focused on the black bag. When he finally unzipped it, her eyes almost popped out of their sockets.
Her clothing, her gun – her belongings – were all in the large bag. They seemed to still be in good condition, and she had to wonder whether they were waiting for her all this time, or whether they were repaired not long ago.
She hesitantly reached inside the bag and pulled out the first object that she could reach; her boots. The leather was thick and heavy in her hands, but the familiarity of them made her release a breath of relief.
She looked over them, searching for any sign of deterioration; any sign that they were no longer fit for wear. She found none. They were as good as new. Even the soles were thick and sturdy; a promise that they would last for years to come. In the middle of the soles, the numbers that haunted her dreams were still proudly on display.
“A-326,” John spoke from beside her, lighting a cigar after opening a window. He was watching her with curiosity in his eyes – with a desperate need to know more. To learn more.
She nodded, her tongue wetting her lips as she placed the boot down, “My name. Well, more like my number.”
He hummed, watching as she ruffled through the bag, “Laswell did say that was your name. I assumed it was only for the organisation, to remain as anonymous as possible.”
She pulled out a belt and tugged on it, smiling approvingly at the sturdy material, “No, Sir. It was easier than having to come up with hundreds of different names. This way, there would be no repeats and... I guess it was easier to send us to our deaths when they saw just a number... and no humanity.”
“Hm,” he replied with a puff of smoke, “They dehumanised you.”
She gave him a nod, “I didn’t see it that way at the time. It becomes normal when everyone around you also has one. Viktor especially liked to use them. Always had this sneer on his face whenever he did, though back then I didn’t understand why.”
“Viktor?”
“The Director – the boss.” She explained, “At least he said he was, but I doubt it. He had too much of a superiority complex to really be the one in charge.”
Price’s eyes never left her figure, eyes narrowing as he listened to her speak, “Think you could recognise him? I’m sure if you could, it would be vital information, and could aid us in taking the whole organisation down.”
A soft, almost defeated, sigh left her lips, “I’m sorry, sir,” she looked up at him, “I already told Laswell this but whenever he entered the room we had to turn around or look down at the floor. He claimed eye-contact with him was disrespectful. After a few years of therapy, I realised he just didn’t want to be identified.”
There was a pause when her fingers grabbed onto the heavy material of her mask. It was rough, and she could remember the many times it left an uncomfortable rash around her mouth; but it was useful, covering her face and protecting her from the enemies.
“This thing blinded my men,” he let her know, gesturing at the mask in her hands.
She let out a soft hum, “Yeah, it’s made from special material. If you look at it through night vision goggles, it’ll temporarily blind you-“
“And if you take a picture, it’ll blur your face.”
“Well, more like make it flash,” she corrected, though nodded in agreement.
“Useful,” he admitted.
Price remained quiet for the next few minutes, silently digesting everything she had told him so far. How awful her childhood must have been; how she couldn’t experience things children brought up under normal, healthy circumstances could. Even something as simple as a name was stripped away from her. And yet, in her eyes, it was a normal existence.
John was barely half way through his cigar when she turned to look at him, “Why was I given this?”
“We thought you’d feel more comfortable in something you’re familiar with,” he told her seriously, “Unless you’d prefer the usual military uniform, then you will be given that instead.”
She thought about it. Hard. Both uniforms had their pros and cons, and it was difficult to decide which one would be better. Whilst her old one was more familiar to the touch, and allowed for swifter movements, it clung too tightly to her skin. She could remember the many times it dug into her body, the uncomfortable feeling distracting her during missions.
The military clothing, on the other hand, allowed for a greater storage of weapons and, if need be, a medical kit. The material was less rough, and the breathable fabric prevented overheating. The tactical gear was heavier, but more useful than the one on her old uniform.
Sucking in a small breath, she looked over at the captain, who raised a questioning brow in return, “Do you think I could… use both?”
He tilted his head to the side and puffed out a thick cloud of smoke, “Why?”
“I could use parts of both,” she told him, “Some bits from my old uniform are better – like the boots, the belt, and the mask; but the trousers and tactical gear are not as good as yours. I could improve it by using both.”
He hummed, seeing the logic in her request, “Don’t see why not,” he told her, “I’ll have it ready for you tomorrow. You can take this back to your room – aside for the weapons; I’ll be storing that – and pick what you’d like to keep and what can be discarded. Sound good?”
“Yes, sir,” she told him with a happy nod, “Mission next week, then?”
“Yeah. I’ll brief you in tomorrow and then we’ll begin to prepare.” He paused in thought, “Are you sure you’re up for it?”
“Yes, sir,” she assured him, “Maybe it’ll be a step in gaining your trust.”
Her tone was light-hearted, but there was seriousness behind her words. She wanted him to trust her; to make him her acquaintance, or perhaps to befriend him. Maybe one day, even gain his respect.
But there was also something else behind her expression – behind the need to show him he could trust her. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it, and he wasn’t sure whether he was accurate in his deduction, but there was a certain sadness in her eyes. Perhaps it was the guilt peeking through, or maybe it was just nerves and he was over-analysing her every move. Whatever it was, he shrugged it off.
“Maybe.”

Group Stage Stats and Standings
With two out of three rounds of the group stage complete, here's a summary of where things currently stand. Remember, there are two ways to qualify for the championship bracket - winning a group (10 characters), and having the most total votes without winning a group (6 characters). By receiving enough votes, any character in the tournament could still technically qualify for one of the six wildcard slots.
First, these tables show standings by group. Purple indicates the group leader (by number of wins; ties broken by number of votes) and red indicates a character who has been locked out of winning their group. Note that since Rain Flaherty and Lucas in Group A have been in three matches rather than two, their vote totals are multiplied by 2/3 to allow a fair comparison.

Next are standings by total number of votes. Group leaders are in purple, and the leaders for the six wildcard championship slots are in blue.

The last batch of group stage polls will go up later this week. Until then, if you're interested in more stats, I've put them beneath the cut because there are Many.
The main reason I decided to have this tournament start with a group stage is that I think it's fairer to the characters (more on that later), but I'd be lying if I denied that More Stats was also a contributing factor. To begin with, here are the total number of votes by group (Group A adjusted as noted earlier):
Group H - 6,573
Group B - 2,653
Group J - 2,081
Group F - 2,002
Group E - 1,254
Group C - 1,196
Group D - 968
Group G - 950
Group A - 785
Group I - 485
These are the individual matches with the most votes and the most notes:
Dainix vs Zhusen (Group H) - 3,674 votes, 1,139 notes
Eddie Kaspbrak vs Lucy Marlowe (Group B) - 1,869 votes, 314 notes
Dainix vs White Chain (Group H) - 1,401 votes, 239 notes
Carla Rutten vs Davepeta (Group J) - 1,118 votes, 155 notes
Penny Spender vs Gaueko (Group F) - 985 votes, 239 notes
Zhusen vs Lupe Jara (Group H) - 824 votes, 109 notes
Vote totals in the remaining matches were distributed as follows:
600-699 votes - 1
500-599 votes - 1
400-499 votes - 4
300-399 votes - 4
200-299 votes - 11
100-199 votes - 14
0-99 votes - 1
The widest margins of victory (by number of votes, not by percentage) - all four matches from Group H are in the top four:
Zhusen vs Lupe Jara (Group H, 724-100) - 624
White Chain vs Lupe Jara (Group H, 605-71) - 534
Dainix vs White Chain (Group H, 946-455) - 491
Dainix vs Zhusen (Group H, 1,999-1,673) - 326
Carla Rutten vs Fleet (Group J, 396-81) - 315
Eddie Kaspbrak vs Fenic (Group B, 375-112) - 263
Eddie Kaspbrak vs Lucy Marlowe (Group B, 804-1,065) - 261
And the narrowest margins of victory (again, by number of votes):
Merlow the Rose vs Chau Le (Group G, 128-130) - 2
TIE Rain Flaherty vs Luck (Group A, 92-98) - 6
TIE Lucas vs Luck (Group A, 75-81) - 6
DIFFERENT TIE Bacon vs Julie (Group D, 113-102) - 11
DIFFERENT TIE Tedd Verres vs Merlow the Rose (Group G, 145-134) - 11
Rain Flaherty vs Elle Argent (Group A, 95-110) - 15
Maggie vs Sulla Pinsky (Group E, 79-97) - 18
In two groups, the current group leader and the group member with the most votes are not the same:
Group F: Gaueko (2-0 record, 747 votes) and Penny Spender (1-1 record, 810 votes)
Group J: Davepeta (2-0 record, 743 votes) and Carla Rutten (1-1 record, 916 votes)
All four characters are currently set to advance to the championship bracket - Gaueko and Davepeta as group winners, and Penny and Carla via wildcard slots.
Something interesting I noticed the other day is that the nine top-ranked characters by vote count all got there in part by facing each other:
In Group H, Dainix (#1) faced Zhusen (#2) in the first round and White Chain (#5) in the second round
In Group B, Lucy Marlowe (#4) faced Eddie Kaspbrak (#5) in the first round
In Group J, Carla Rutten (#6) faced Davepeta (#9) in the first round
In Group F, Penny Spender (#7) faced Gaueko (#8) in the second round
These are the same five matchups that had both the most votes and the most notes. All five of them were reblogged by at least one of their characters' creators. And all but one of the nine characters received more votes - often several times more - facing their highest-ranked opponent than facing their lowest-ranked opponent:
Lucy Marlowe - 8.3x (1,065 vs 128)
Davepeta - 4.1x (598 vs 145)
Gaueko - 2.3x (522 vs 225)
Zhusen - 2.3x (1,673 vs 724)
Eddie Kaspbrak - 2.1x (804 vs 375)
Dainix - 2.1x (1,999 vs 946)
Penny Spender - 1.3x (463 vs 347)
Carla Rutten - 1.3x (520 vs 396)
White Chain - 0.8x (455 vs 605)
This seems to indicate popular characters actually benefit from facing each other, especially taking into account that the championship bracket will be seeded by total number of votes. Of the six characters currently holding a wildcard qualification slot, five of them are ranked in the top seven qualifiers overall.
On the flip side, these are the characters with the most nominations who don't currently qualify for the championship:
Cheryl (Group E) - 8
Rain Flaherty (Group A) - 8
Teige Carroll (Group I) - 7
Lucas (Group A) - 6
Of the fourteen characters who received five or more nominations, ten are currently slated to advance. The remaining six current qualifiers received either three or four nominations each.
These characters have received the most votes so far without winning a match:
Merlow the Rose (Group G) - 262
Cheryl (Group E) - 244
Rosemaster (Group D) - 235
And these are the characters who have the fewest votes while winning both of their matches:
Yoshi (Group I) - 156
Luck (Group A) - 179
Vaarsuvius (Group I) - 200
Elle Argent (Group A) - 285
Group A and Group I are the only groups with two undefeated characters who will face off in the final round, and the only groups in which number of votes had to be used as a tiebreaker to determine the current group leader.
Vaarsuvius has the lowest number of votes of any character currently winning their group. While there's only a difference of 85 votes between Elle Argent and Vaarsuvius, there are quite a few characters between them - Elle is ranked 15th, while V is ranked 27th. V is the only character currently slated to advance over other characters with more votes.
One of the dangers of a round-robin format is a match in the final round between two characters with a 0-2 record, both of whom have already been locked out of winning their group. That will only happen once here, between Teige Carroll and Eri McCure in Group I.
Finally, here's a piece of etymology I learned while preparing for the tournament: The "robin" in "round robin" has nothing to do with the bird or with the English given name. Instead, the term originated from the French phrase "ruban rond," meaning "round ribbon," but over time "ruban/ribbon" was idiomized to "robin."
