6. What was the thought process behind their appearance? Did you go mostly for the aesthetic or are there other reasons they look the way they do?

Well, I suppose it was mostly for the aesthetic purposes first, with the aesthetic being “the edgiest durge look you can come up with” because I wasn’t planning for him to become my oc and was simply going to use him as a placeholder for the evil bg3 route. Hence at first there were things like the infamous flame tattoo, piercings, the red/black color scheme, slicked-back hair etc. etc. some of which I grew to hate with time because it stopped matching the character in my head who was no longer just an “evil” placeholder but had an actual personality, which ironically didn’t match a single decision I made in my playthrough since I took a straight up 180-degree turn while coming up with his story.

Firstly, I got rid of the piercings and the tattoo because during his Bhaal worship era he wouldn’t have wanted to “stain” his body his Holy Father made for him in His image with anything else. As I see it it’s expected of other bhaalists since they aren’t Bhaal's creations and aren’t made from His own flesh so they have to show their devotion to Him somehow, but Daylen was, so he would see it as some sort of blasphemy to do something to it, unless his Father would demand it. And while we are still on the topic of the flame tattoo – at first I tried to justify its existence by coming up with the idea that it was a cover-up for a scar from Orin, but as I said before it’s simply not something he would’ve done and let’s be honest the flame tattoo itself is a shitty cover-up. I still liked the idea of him getting a neck scar because it was somehow symbolic of their relationship with Orin to me so I left it; now he just either wears high-collared clothes or is left somehow uncomfortably open with it. And about piercings - he does wear one simple earring post-game when he’s finally free and does it because he’s now able to do whatever he wants with his life as he belongs only to himself; also it’s a symbol of belonging with his found family now.

Secondly, I made his hair more curly mostly because it suited him more (especially after I started thinking how he would look like in a modern setting) although it still gets tied back for practicality reasons.

Thirdly, I also left him with his freckles but only like. For the last act of the game. I think he had them in his childhood since he was spending a lot of time out in the sun but not during his Bhaal worship era due to most of the work being done at night/underground. They were also done for the aesthetic purposes but I suppose you could say something about the sun symbolism here and how they only become prominent when he’s not under Bhaal's control.

His clothes choices are mostly just practicality reasons tho.

19. What is your general favourite thing about the character? What is your least favourite?

Going from the author’s perspective, Daylen’s the character who’s moral struggles I enjoy dissecting the most and the thing I hate the most is trying to fit these struggles in his dialogues since he’s not much of a talker.

As for the viewer perspective, I like that despite his uhh isolated life experience due to his upbringing and constant slaps on the writs he gets after flying too close to the sun (aka getting to feel what good life actually tastes like) he never really shrugs off any ideas to try something new and somehow still isn’t afraid to come out of his comfort zone. Aaand I hate that he’s someone who isn’t able to ask for help when he needs it and his first instinct after fucking up (whatever it was actually his fault or not doesn’t really matter) is martyrdom and completely shutting everyone off since he would rather suffer in silence and solitude because he feels like it’s something he deserves and that way nobody is going to get hurt.

17. Are there any motifs or symbols associated with the character? How are they represented, in their design, personality or in some other way?

Venon bird symbolism you will always be famous. The most obvious part about it is probably the bard thing since the specific bird I associate with him is a goldfinch which is a songbird. However the birds are probably the best example to symbolize one’s desire for freedom and exploration as well as the one’s carefree and cheerful nature which suits him perfectly. There’s also the part about him being left at the young age at the monastery within the abusive system, aka becoming a bird trapped in a cage for several years. There’s also several songs highlighting his relationship with the other characters that use the bird symbolism in his and the other's playlists but if I started talking about these it would take years. I will however mention the verse from Let’s fall in love – Mother Mother because it’s just sooooo good at capturing his relationship with any romantic interest.

Like it is easy for him to be a bird and only ever having quick flings instead of playing these cat and mouse games because he’s just so afraid of any sort of commitment to anyone.

Also. He is the striking example of these “male birds vs. female birds” jokes in both his behavior and the way he dresses.

Besides the bird symbolism there’s also the stars symbolism but it’s not That big. Like it’s mostly about being this outstanding/gleaming/eye-catching person but without the welcoming warmth of the sun (but that’s to strangers. to his closest couple of people he is like the sun with all its warmth and love. sun is a star after all. also there is a moment when he gets compared to a sunrise by Daylen (who becomes a Lathander paladin in the post-game partially thanks to Venon) which is also such a good fit because he's all about new beginings). And he doesn't need anyone else to shine like the moon does. (<- I said it before like a year ago in some other post and I still stand by it)

18. Does the character have other characters connected to them? Do you have a family tree and "offscreen" connections made up for them or do they exist in a vacuum purely for the purpose of the story?

I think it would be weird to have characters with no connections whatsoever outside of the story so of course there are. Most of them exist just to push his story forward obviously like his first crush ever or the guy that gave him the burn scar or some of his exes. I think I could even say the same about his father since I mostly think about his mother a lot and not only about her relationship with Venon but also her story as a whole. Like lately I have even been thinking about making her a fully fleshed out oc and maybe like. Play as her in some other rpg.  

And of course there’s also his sibling with whom his life is so intertwined with I could never think about them as anything other than “bonded like stray cats who cannot be adopted separately” and I still think that their story about codependency and letting go of people you love deeply but need to part ways with to grow independently into who you truly are is the one I love the most.

I was trying to figure out some ways Neriah could exist in worldstates where Loris was never taken to the Circle and I started to think...

For this to work, Day can't have been taken to the Circle either.

So what if he's another potential Rook?

What if I make him my Shadow Dragon Rook?

Imagine how juicy the Treviso/Minrathous choice would be, especially considering Neriah would have probably been raised by Day in the worldstates (like, would Loris save his people, or would he think of the daughter he never got to see grow up?)

we should have remade more often. but alas, we have too many memories.

realised amell's family connections and got sad about it all so I wrote a little dialogue about his past. I'm not a writer so be gentle.

"I do have family- well, I had family. I haven't heard anything of them since I was brought to the Circle." Leliana's silence was the practiced gentle assurance of a Chantry Sister. She reminded him of Lily. Daylen shifted uncomfortably on the bedroll. "I was born in Kirkwall, I think. I was only four when the Templars took me, so my memory is a bit hazy. I know I had a mother and a father. I think there may have been another baby as well. A brother? Sister? I can't recall."

He looked down at his fingers tangled in his lap and cursed the tears forming in his eyes. "They could all be dead now, for all I know. Is it- ah, I'm sorry." He scrubbed at his cheek. "I don't even remember them, it's silly of me to get upset. I'm sorry."

Meeting Leliana's sympathetic eyes once more, he continued, his voice wavering. "Is it cruel to hope that they miss me? That I left some unfillable hole in their lives? Late at night I used to imagine my mother lying in her bed, somewhere across the Waking Sea, sobbing the same way I was. It brought me comfort. I can't even remember her face."

I have so many ocs i could do this with but here are my top three for now.

Starting with my favorite daylen. His homophobic mother shot him with an arrow not only is he part not deer but she also used the bow he was gifted when he moved away to be with the person he loved. Also his brother was there and served as a distraction.

Now onto semper. She was dying and her gf got a god to give her their imortality but she also got powers and ended up accidentally killing her whole kingdom and the love of her life when she was trying to save her. Then she kept the imortality promising to never pass it to anyone else so they wouldn’t suffer like her and she lived for eons wishing she could see her love again and thinking she’d never feel that way abt anyone else then she met a knight and fell in love with him and then because of her powers she accidentally ended the universe and now she is the ONLY AND I MEAN ONLY thing that exists.

And now plane crash duo. They hated each other and got in a plane crash and were the only survivors but hey at least they worked their shit out but one of em lost their leg and the other got his heart broken maybe.

All it took was one look. Just one look and you were in love. Just one look and Scott could not imagine a life without him. ‘Him’ being the frog at build-a-bear. “Look!” You both exclaimed before you even entered the bright-lit store. You looked at each other, looked at where you were pointing and like a cartoon you both realised you were in perfect sync. 

Your boyfriend almost trampled a toddler to get to the frogs. He pulled out two lime green, limp plushies from the basket and held them up next to his head. You two did not even bother bringing Cassie along to pretend you were going for her. You swerved around the poor, startled toddler to take one of the frogs from Scott. “They are so cute,” you scream-whispered, trying to hold onto some sense of adulthood. He nodded in agreement. “Shouldn’t we look at other options as well?” You questioned. Scott closed his eyes and shook his head aggressively. You giggled, getting the point; you two were going to bring these two frogs home. 

You already agreed before coming here you would add a voice message to each other’s plushie. Scott brought the one for you to the other side of the store so you would not hear it until later. You stared at the small device, still no clue what you were going to say. You just pressed the record button, hoping your heart would speak for you. “Scotty bear,” you started, “you may drool on me any day and I will never get angry at you for shoving your whole fist into my mouth while you sleep. Love you.” You giggled when you were done. What an odd thing to say, but you meant every word of it. When you returned to the lady that helped you out with it, you found her smiling from ear to ear with Scott. “He said something really stupid, didn’t he?” You questioned as you switched devices with Scott. 

She shook her head, while trying to hide her toothy smile behind her hand. “You’ll love it, trust me,” she reassured you, before sending you on your way to the filling machine. You did the whole shebang with making a wish and putting a heart inside, before going on to dress up your frogs. There were several Avengers outfits to pick from, but no Antman. Scott was a little salty about it and he did a piss poor job at hiding it too. You would write a hearty letter to build-a-bear later. 

In the end your frogs were wearing both very jolly outfits, but they did not match at all. You joked about it, while you were filling in the information for the birth certificates. The date ended in a rather sorrowful moment, when the cashier rang up your purchases. You felt your bank account weep as you reached for your wallet, but Scott had his credit card already out. “Come on, I could use a bite to eat.” He suddenly sounded very off. You supposed he wanted to make the grand gesture of paying, but also felt his bank balance plummet to subterranean levels. You mentally vowed to pay for lunch. 

You were not sure whether Scott was penniless or not, because he was suddenly very particular about lunch, but still did not pick the cheapest option. Instead you found yourself in one of your favourite cafés. It was relatively cheap, had sockets under the tables to charge your phone and the lunch menu had the best wraps in the world on it. Your favourite waiter was working today. You smiled widely at Daylen as he approached your table. “Welcome back,” he almost sang, ever the chipper college student. You sometimes worried if he was really that merry or if his bright smile was a secret cry for help. 

Daylen never asked you for your name, so you were pretty sure he had no idea what it was. To be fair, you only knew his because of his name tag. “The house special wraps, twice?” He asked while writing it down already on the classic good old notepad he carried with him. He always had one with a Sanrio character on it.

You huffed a laugh. “Of course.” Daylen looked up from his Keroppi notepad and winked at you, assuring you he knew what drink to get too. Before he left, he gave Scott a wink too. “I feel like I have become boring, always ordering the same thing here,” you sighed as you reached into your bag to grab your phone charger. You plugged it in and then grabbed your cheerfully clad frog. “Time to listen to the messages?” 

“Me first!” Scott exclaimed as he hastily grabbed his. You laughed at his enthusiasm. He held his frog close and squeezed around until he found the soundbox. ‘Scotty bear, you may drool on me any day and I will never get angry at you for shoving your whole fist into my mouth while you sleep. Love you,’ your voice came out from the green plushie. He chuckled, hiding his face behind his hand, the very one that your message was about. “That happened once!” He exclaimed, defending himself. 

“But you drool on me daily!” You countered. Scott reached around the table to give you a playful slap. “Hey! I said I don’t mind,” you added, before realising how loud you were being. Well, it was not like it was busy here. 

“Ok, time for you to squeeze your build-a-bear!” Scott loudly proclaimed. You frowned at him, but you were really curious what your frog had to say to you. You looked down at your frog and felt around until you found where to squeeze.

‘Hey sweetheart, today we are at build-a-bear, building frogs.’  There was a nervous chuckle. ‘Today it is frogs, but in the past years you have built me a better man. I’ll take you to the place where I fell in love with you later and I will ask you to build me into a husband. Please say yes. I love you.’

Your mouth fell open as Scott fumbled while getting off his chair. A box came out of nowhere. You turned your head to see Daylen toss it to Scott, the rest of the regular café staff filming the occasion. Scott barely caught it and you put your frog on the table while getting up, your hands covering your gaping mouth. “I know this is not our first date spot,” Scott started when he finally got on one knee, “but I actually don’t remember where that was.” What a great start. “Back then, I did not know what you would mean to me.” He sounded like he was about to cry and you already felt the tears pool in the corners of your eyes. “But I do remember when you took me here for the first time and forced me to try the wraps. I remember the first time I saw you eat them like they were the best thing in the world and I could not for the life of me figure out what made these ordinary wraps so special- I’m sorry Daylen.”

Scott briefly looked away from you to apologise to the waiter. “You’re ruining your own proposal!” Daylen yelled back and waved with his hand to Scott to make him go back to a very important milestone in his life. 

“Yes! Sorry!” He turned his head back to you and tried to open the box in his hand only to drop it on the floor. “Sorry! Uh… wraps! Yes!” He fumbled as he was clearly off track from his script. He had grabbed the box and went back to opening it while looking at you. “That’s when I fell in love, wait no, that’s not what I wrote down-” 

He dropped the box again. You bent down and grabbed it. You opened it for him and pressed it in his hands, holding them for a little moment. “Breathe,” you whispered. “I don’t need a beautiful speech. I always love to hear what you have to say,” you said a little louder, before letting go and straightening your back. 

Scott took a deep breath, before holding the ring up. “A couple of years back, I saw you eat wraps and I thought to myself ‘I want to make you even happier than these wraps do’. I don’t know if I’m there yet, but I promise to do my best every day for the rest of my life. So marry me? Please?” You wiped the tears off your cheeks and nodded, while holding a hand out. Scott put the ring on your finger and rose to his feet to kiss you. Applause and cheers exploded around you, Daylen’s quite possibly the loudest and when the waiter is out of earshot, you’ll tell Scott that he had surpassed the wraps a long time ago already.

Oldest OC: Ris. I didn't even know her first name when I started writing her, so I stuck with the last name, then Alistair abbreviated it, and now here we are.

Meanest OC: Probably Trev. She's a fire mage through and through, in temprament and skill, permanently sleep-deprived, and not equipped to be the leader of anything, much less an entire army.

Softest OC: Emjee Hawke. They're so worried about losing people that it colors nearly every decision they make.

Most Aloof/Standoffish OC: Ris, again. She doesn't mean to be, and if she's trying she can fake her way through socializing. In an ideal world, she'd be be sitting by a fire with a book and a glass of wine or a mug of tea, but unfortunately for her, she lives in Thedas, and catastrophes keep happening.

Dumbest OC: Madman of Kirkwall, hands down. He's not actually stupid, but he has so little impulse control that the dumb thing happens before the rest of his brain finishes considering the implications.

Smartest OC: Ris or Nati, with Ris pulling ahead because she's had more time to read rather than constantly struggling to survive as a casteless dwarf. Daylen is pretty smart too, but not in practical ways thanks to that there Circle upbringing.

OC I'd Be Friends With: Hopefully all of them, but .... maybe from a bit of a distance to avoid splash damage.
