• i only have names for the twins, andrea (aaron needed a Moment after admitting he wanted to name her that) and annelise (annie for short);

• kevin got everyone (including the adult foxes, and including david, abby, stephanie and bee) the matching santa hats with cat fox ears;

• dan and matt's first child loves exy and captains his little league team;

• nicky and erik's kid is the newest addition to the bundle. it took a while for nicky to get over a lot of things from his time being the twins' guardian, and at first they wanted to adopt a baby, but after knowing this child they decided to keep him. he also gets a hat, but wants to show off his minecraft reindeer antlers a little longer;

• king fluffkins, andrew's daughter, is a rescued ragdoll mix runt from a breeder's litter who threw her away. if the breeder is never heard from again, neil doesn't know anything about it. she and her brother sir fat cat mccatterson ruin andrew's goth vibe.

Just got back into Animal Kingdom after watching The Pitt and I forgot how much of a psycho Pope was.

There was something about Andrew Cody.

Interns aren’t allowed to treat patients — they observe, report, and run everything by their attending. Communication is permitted, but only within boundaries. No diagnoses. No attachments.

But Andrew Cody was different.

He was serving six years for burglary. A little high for that kind of charge, you thought, but nothing in his file suggested anything out of the ordinary. Still, the moment you stepped into the room with him, something felt wrong — deeply, viscerally wrong. The kind of wrong that makes the hairs on your arms rise and your breath catch in your throat.

He radiated an aura — not of violence, not exactly — but of something dangerous. Unnatural. He never spoke. Just stared. Always straight at you. Not hostile, just… focused. Emotionless. You never understood why he was so heavily sedated until the one time you were left alone with him.

And he kept staring.

You broke the silence. You spoke. You didn’t even realize you had until he responded. That day was the first time you heard his voice. And from that moment, something began — a strange, quiet rapport.

Over the next year and a half, you didn’t learn much. His file said he had a family. He seemed close to his mother. But there was something off whenever you brought her up — the way he looked at you, the tightness around his eyes, the silence that followed. He didn’t need to speak. You could feel it. Whatever was there wasn’t right.

Still, he tolerated you. That much was clear.

One long weekend, you were off. When you returned, his knuckles were bloodied and raw. You learned he’d spent a week in solitary. When someone finally got him to speak, he’d said only one thing:

“I don’t like it when she is not here.”

There was something terribly sad about Andrew Cody. Something broken. But also something innocent. Naive. The first time you accidentally touched his arm, he flinched and froze — like no one had ever touched him with care before. After that, he shut down. It took nearly a month to get a word out of him again.

Andrew — or “Pope,” as he was sometimes called — was strange. Deeply strange. And it all seemed to circle back to his family. To his mother.

But what could you do? You were just an intern.

After two years and three months, your we’re done. What they let them do in the prison was too much for you.

On your last day, you sat with him one final time. You urged him to apply for parole again. He promised you he would. You asked him not to go back to his family. Not to tell them where he was going if he got out. You wanted him to start fresh. To disappear. He didn’t reply.

He just stared.

What could you do, really? You were just a 25-year-old girl, trying to make sense of things far beyond your training. And maybe, somewhere deep down, you realized this wasn’t the job you wanted after all.

You thought that final session would be the last time you’d ever see him.

You were wrong.

Because somewhere between your questions and his silences, between the brief moments of trust and the hours of staring — you became something else to him.

You became his anchor.

You became his escape plan.

You became his obsession.

And the second he walked out of that facility…

he was already looking for you.
