Union Plaza Hotel & Casino, July 1971

The hotel was built on the site of the former Union Pacific depot and Greyhound bus terminal. Two companies financed the hotel: Upland Industries, a subsidiary of Union Pacific Corp, and Scott Corp. directed by Frank E. Scott. The Scott Corp. was the landlord, Scott was the CEO and president of the hotel, with partners Sen. Howard Cannon, and downtown casino stalwarts J.K. Houssels Jr, Jackie Gaughan, Sam Boyd, and Bill Boyd, who managed the “world’s largest casino.”

'70: Aug. 10, Groundbreaking. (LA Times 8/9/70, RJ 7/1/71)

'70: Nov., Union Station demolished. (RJ 11/24/70)

'71: May 2, Final UP train service. Amtrak was established, and passenger service through Las Vegas is suspended.

'71: Jul. 2, Union Plaza Hotel & Casino is opened. Architects: Zick & Sharp (Las Vegas) in association with Stanley J. How (Omaha). Contractor: Blount-Yoxen Construction Co. The hotel complex contained a bus station, 500-seat showroom, 2nd story pool in front of the hotel, and an adjacent parking garage. The 504-room hotel was roughly the same size as the Fremont Hotel and smaller than some on the Strip. Union Plaza claimed "the world's largest casino" as 66,000 sq. ft.

'75: Jul., Sports book addition. KDWN Radio 720 AM begins broadcasting from the hotel with a station on the 2nd floor.

'79: Oct. 28, Amtrak’s Desert Wind line through Las Vegas begins the first regularly scheduled service since ‘71. Small room and platform in the rear of the hotel is used as the depot.

'81: Apr., Rooftop sign and lights changed. Design by Charles Barnard, Ad Art. 

'82: Construction of 26-story south tower, and conversion of the front pool to restaurant designed by Louis Pereira. (RJ 3/16/82, 9/19/82, 10/28/82)

'83: Center Stage restaurant opens in Jan. (RJ 1/23/83) Mural depicting the past, present, and future of passenger rail service created in the hotel between the lobby and depot area. Tower topped off in Apr. and opened in fall. Total rooms: 1030. (RJ 4/23/83, 10/20/83)

'90-'93: Jackie Gaughan acquires the holdings of Union Plaza founder Frank Scott, followed by Upland’s participation in '93, becoming the majority shareholder and ending the relationship with Union Pacific. The hotel is renamed “Jackie Gaughan’s Plaza” circa ’92, though the signs remain unchanged, with “Union” on the rooftop sign for several years.

2004: Mar. 26, Plaza is sold. Union Plaza Hotel & Casino Inc, Exber Inc and Gaughan South sell Plaza, Las Vegas Club, Gold Spike, Western Hotel, and 60 acres of land and non-gaming properties to Barrick Gaming and Tamares Real Estate for $82M. The Barrick group plans a "themed street behind the Plaza which will re-create the ambience of old downtown Las Vegas." (RJ 3/26/2004)

2005: Tamares buys Barrick’s interest in Plaza hotel and the Las Vegas properties; Larry Woolf managing.

2009: Firefly opens in the former Center Stage restaurant; Oscar's Steakhouse opens in its place in 2011.

2014: Jonathan Jossel takes over as the CEO of the Plaza, the youngest non-restricted gaming licensees in Las Vegas.

TEL AVIV — As Ohad stood in Tel Aviv’s Habima Square on Saturday night, it’s safe to say that he disagreed with many of the tens of thousands of others protesting alongside him.

Unlike the centrist and left-wing politicians who headlined the rally, and many attendees, Ohad, who declined to share his last name, is a staunch conservative voter — consistently supporting parties to the right of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

And even though waves of mass protest have coursed through Israel over the past several years, Ohad said he hadn’t attended a demonstration since 2011, when Israelis rallied in opposition to their rising cost of living.

This week, he decided to take to the streets. Since Oct. 7, 2023, he’s spent nearly a year of his life as a military reservist, leaving behind a pregnant wife and two young children. Now at home, he was shocked by recent footage of police using violence and skunk water against people protesting Netanyahu. Footage of police officers breaking the car windows of protesters was the final straw for him.

“That broke me. It really made me angry,” he said. “This isn’t what we’re fighting for. I’m afraid we’re very far from democracy now.”

On Saturday night, he was among the protesters, one of an estimated 200,000 Israelis who gathered in the largest street demonstrations since the Oct. 7 attack. The crowds protested the resumption of the war in Gaza, called for the release of the hostages still held there, and decried Netanyahu’s efforts to remove senior government officials.

The protests have swelled over the past week, show no signs of stopping and come as Israel faces a bevy of entangled political controversies: Netanyahu ended the ceasefire with Hamas last week after two months, and Israel has ramped up its fighting there.

Netanyahu has also fired Ronen Bar, the chief of the Shin Bet intelligence service, citing a loss of confidence in him. The dismissal comes as the Shin Bet is investigating Netanyahu’s office for illicit ties to Qatar, and on Friday, Israel’s Supreme Court froze the firing. Meanwhile, the government is also taking steps to remove Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, whom Netanyahu sees as an adversary.

Those decisions have set the stage for a constitutional crisis. The protesters portray them as an abrogation of the popular will that will endanger the 59 remaining hostages — 24 of whom are thought to be alive — as well as Israel’s democracy.

obviously this isn't something visible without CGI since the actors don't actually age at the same rate as their characters, so we have to use Vampire Logic and the suspension of disbelief when it comes to the super soldiers (and Asgardians for that matter). The characters don't look the same age as their actors anymore, their actors have matured but they're still more or less the same as when we first met them.

I wonder if in-universe that characters who don't have delayed aging ever look at Steve, Bucky, Thor or even Loki and think what the fuck you're a baby

Sam is the best guy to illustrate this point.

Sam was 34 during CATWS, and Steve and Bucky were both around 27-28 physically (accounting for the delayed aging of the serum negating any time Bucky spent out of ice, which I've seen most people estimate as being no more than 2 years in total over the entire 50+ year span, and Bucky was 26 when he got his serum in Oct 1943.)

By the time Endgame rolls around, Steve is meant to be 38 but if I've got the math right with some estimation on how old he looks as Old Man Steve vs how old he actually was by then, it's ~40% slower than baseline humans. So in-universe he only aged about 6 years in the 10 years between meeting Sam and Sam dusting back into existence. Meaning before he dipped and came back as Old Man Steve, Steve looked about 33-34.

As of TFATWS, Sam is still 38, which means by the MCU's present day, which is 2026, Sam is 40-41.

Bucky on the other hand (and please remember I mean Bucky the character here, not Sebastian since that's literally impossible) who by the way was not aging at all for 5 and a half years (the Blip and the 6 month freeze in Wakanda) aged about ~2.5 years the entire time between CATWS and TFATWS, so he only looked about 30 during the show. Even by 2026, he's only looking about 32 at absolute max.

In-Universe, Sam has witnessed two of his friends barely age a DAY in a decade. Like how is that not a massive mind fuck. There must come a day where it just hits Sam all at once that Bucky looks really fucking young, he's in his 40s now, even with the Blip, but Bucky still hasn't physically reached the age Sam was when they met 12 years ago in DC.

Don't even get me started on how Thor must look to Bruce, Tony, Natasha, Jane, Darcy and Clint, since Thor in-universe still only looks 27 aka the age Chris H. was when he was filming Thor in 2011. Super soldiers age slower but Asgardians practically come to a stand still once they hit maturity.

Edit: also to add to this, I'm not sure but it doesn't look as if the serum Isaiah, John Walker and Alexei have slows their aging down at all. It seems to be just something Steve and Bucky's has? (We also know Bucky has a different serum, so his aging might not be the same as Steve's was, in the comics at least I think the Infinity Serum stops his aging completely but don't quote me on that.)

March 11: Shaniece Nesbitt (18, Megan Fox lookalike). ’Spends night’ with him in Culloden Hotel. She firmly denied it and said a male friend was there the entire time. 

March 17: Daily Star publishes article saying Harry sleeps with 3-4 girls a night and has 12 waiting for him at any given time. Article is picked up and widely reprinted.

All in order to get their hands on black place cards that give them access to a fan meeting with the British boy band later that afternoon. One Direction has barely released a single in Sweden but still manages to create hysteria worthy of any big boy band. And that's only because people found them on Twitter and YouTube. The guys' time at the British music competition X-Factor has generated millions of hits on the video site, and now they are about to release their debut single What Makes You Beautiful.

"I think it's mostly Twitter, people link and tip each other off there. If One Direction is trending on Twitter in the UK, people in other countries get curious and look up what's up, and then it's on", Zayn guesses. Already last summer, when the quintet was here and recorded with, among others, the producer Rami (Backstreet Boys, Britney, Westlife), there was a frenzy outside the studio in central Stockholm.

"The reception in Sweden has always been incredible," Liam says. Harry continues: "Sweden is absolutely fantastic in terms of music, so it's extra fun to get attention here. You have so many good songwriters and artists who come from here. I love Swedish House Mafia, for example. And during our time in X-Factor we sang a Darin song." "I saw Eric Saade at Eurovision this spring and he was incredibly good. He looks like a pop star and had a good song, so it was great that he did well," Niall says.

QX: Nyligen toppade ni Englandslistan och ni syns pryda varenda poptidning som finns. Kan ni ens gå ut i Storbritannien? "Ja, det är lättare att gå ut där än här i Sverige. Där vet vi var vi ska gå, och det är egentligen bara att ta lite bilder då och då. Så hysteriskt är det inte", förklarar Zayn. "Däremot kanske vi inte går ut i ett shoppingcenter nära en skola där de precis har rast, då kan det bli hysteri", skrattar Liam. One Direction sökte till X-Factor som soloartister men blev ihopsatta av Idol/X- factor-mannen Simon Cowell. Han såg snabbt potential i en ung killgrupp och efter att få hänga ihop och bara ha kul utan att behöva jobba så hittade killarna sina roller i gruppen. Under hela X-Factorserien låg de stadigt i toppen. De slutade på en tredjeplats i finalen som sågs av nästan var tredje brittiskt tv-tittare. "Det var en besvikelse att inte vinna", medger Liam och får medhåll av de andra. "Men nu har vi gått vidare och Matt (Cardle) som vann är en fantastisk kille som förtjänade vinsten."

QX: You recently topped the UK charts and you're on the cover of every pop magazine out there. Can you even go out in the UK?

"Yes, it's easier to go out there than here in Sweden. In the UK we know where to go, and it's really just a few photos now and then. It's not that hysterical," explains Zayn.

"However, we might not go out in a shopping centre near a school where they're on a school break, then there could be hysteria," laughs Liam.

One Direction applied for the X-Factor as solo artists, but were put together by Idol/X-Factor judge Simon Cowell. He quickly saw potential in a young group of guys and after hanging out together and just having fun without having to work, the guys found their roles in the group. Throughout the X-Factor series, they were consistently at the top. They finished third in the final, which was watched by almost one in every third British viewer.

"It was disappointing not to win," Liam admits, and the others agree. "But now we've moved on, and Matt (Cardle), who won, is a great bloke who deserved to win."

After the release of their single What Makes You Beautiful, the boys performed at the classic gay bar G-A-Y [which is inside/the co-venue of the gay/queer nightclub Heaven] in London, and of course the place was packed. "Yes, it was a crazy night. It was an incredible vibe and a really fun atmosphere to play in," Zayn recalls. QX: Are you aware that you have gay fans? "Sometimes you see guys tweeting that they fancy us. But other than that, we haven't been playing live/out on the road much. It's mostly the girls who are visible and heard when we're out doing promotion." [it's not explicitly stated who said this] QX: Which of you is the most popular with gay guys? "Zayn and Louis!" Harry and Liam say to each other. "Yeah, that's probably true, I don't know why, but I seem to attract gay guys," Zayn smiles. "It's because of his cheekbones!" Harry shouts.

QX: Who spends the most money on clothes? "Zayn." Again, everyone agrees. "I just like brand/designer clothes", Zayn excuses himself. QX: Who is most popular with the girls? "Harry." Everyone agrees again. "We all have different types of fans, and Harry is the one who draws the most in general." [not explicitly said who said this] QX: Who looks best naked? "I've only seen Harry naked", Louis excuses himself. "I'd say we all look pretty good naked. We're a bunch of cute guys," Zayn smiles.

Nevada Building ('56-'78)

'56: Nevada Building, a 4-story office & retail space designed by Zick & Sharp opens in Apr. The owner-developer is not clear. In '62, Three-O-One Corp (Moe Dalitz, Allard Roen, Israel Alderman) are cited as the owner of the Nevada Building at this time. (RJ 3/8/56, RJ 10/9/62)

'78: Jan., First word of the hotel in the press. Moe Dalitz will build the hotel, with Herb Tobman and Al Sachs operating the hotel & casino. “Tobman and partners Al Sachs and Fred Richmond have plans … for a 300-room hotel.” A later piece in the Review-Journal states Tobman & Sachs first proposed the Sundance in '76, that they owned the Nevada Building and had acquired the adjacent properties. (RJ 1/22/78, RJ 7/3/80)

'78: Nov., Nevada Building demolished. (RJ 11/8/78)

'79: Jun., Carrao Construction Co. begins work on Sundance. (RJ 6/17/79)

'79: Sep., Dalitz requests $27M loan from the state Retirement Board for the hotel construction.

'80: Jun. 19, Dalitz called by Gaming Control Board for licensing because of a guaranteed a line of credit to operators Sachs & Tobman. Sachs (57.5%) and Tobman (32.5%) have already been approved. (The other 10% owners, not accounted for in the press.) The Dalitz probe is put on hold ultimately never appears before the board before Jackie Gaughan leases the casino in '84.

Sundance ('80-'87)

'80: Jul. 3, Sundance opens. The hotel has one tower, 17 floors, 290 rooms, and a 450-space garage. Following the MGM Grand fire later in the year, Sundance is cited by Las Vegas Fire Marshal Ned Backer as the only downtown hotel to meet all fire-safety features required under building codes adopted by the City Commission in Jul. '79, "a firefighter's delight." (RJ 11/28/80)

'81: Construction of the second tower begins in Jan., completed in Nov. The 34-story, 360-room, 400-foot tower is the tallest in downtown Las Vegas. Total rooms: 650.

'83: Jun., Sundance leased to Jack Pieper.

'84: Jul., Sundance leased to Jackie Gaughan and El Cortez management, as court-appointed supervisors.

'86: Dec. 1, Lincoln Management Group of Reno's Fitzgerald's Hotel, takes over Sundance lease as court-appointed supervisors.

Fitzgeralds ('87-2012)

'87: Oct., Lincoln buys Sundance. Las Vegas City Council approves name change to Fitzgeralds in Dec. Facade renovation is approved by the city 2/3/88.

'96: Nov., Corner marquee changed with 120-ft rainbow and 35-ft “Mr O'Lucky” charactater.

2001: Dec., Fitzgeralds Las Vegas bought by Don Barden, Majestic Star Casino, LLC, along with Colorado and Mississippi properties. Barden becomes the first African American casino owner in Las Vegas.

2002: Mr. O'Lucky removed from the sign. Later destroyed by fire at the Neon Museum in 2004.

2003: Barden separated Fitzgeralds Las Vegas from the Majestic Star umbrella.

2011: May 19, Barden dies.

2011: Oct., Barden estate sells Fitzgeralds to Derek and Greg Stevens.

2012: Fitzgeralds rebranded as The D.
