Here is another portion of that goofy victorian interaction
Can you tell im really enjoying their nose dynamic(💞)
Tbh the Legend of Baskerville theme from this series is a total banger, and considered a love theme (by me). Go listen to it on youtube now!(minute 25:55)
Having a lot of thoughts on the Baskerville episodes from this series being the most mysterious and entertaining (to me), especially as a kid, due to the soundtracks, almost complete absence of Sherlock, sudden change of setting to the countryside, etc., etc.
The last time i rewatched it though, they just appeared to me too long, but its probably because i was busy drawing throughout the sequence. I have to re-check sometime soon.
Found this soft interaction in the Master Blackmailer episode - Holmes touches Watson's shoulder so tenderly! and its very brief part in frame, but you can see how Holmes' hand lingers on touching his shoulder even as he moves away <3
(spoilers in thoughts under readmore)
Watching this there are some wonderful moments of justified anger in it, I can see how much this case and the injustice wounds Holmes, and in turn stresses Watson (who's concern in Sherlock is also very justified, that even he himself says he went about the case in ways he's not proud of, in the end... poor Aggie made me laugh initially, but then feel burning second-hand shame at how Holmes used her during this case.) Robert Hardy is an amazing villain in this!!!! I got goosebumps from the way Milverton looked at people during this whole episode, like a predator sizing up its prey. Chilling
Two scenes with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson from the movie "The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother". I love the crossdressing in the second scene! And the two ladies that got the suits!
HERE WE ARE. Guilty, nothing to say in my defence once more.
I saw this post, you see. And i could not NOT think to a whole series of HCs on the way Holmes' relationship with his Watson changes in the years, so that's what's there for you.
Uh, for those who might be triggered, there's sex talk, but there's nothing explicit.
I thank my dear @louieclamlent for having betaed it and the people sharing my guilt for the HCs after that post are @i-dont-talk-for-days-on-end and @tyrannosaurusnacks, i love you too, my dears.
(one of) the most frustrating parts about the portrayal of drow society is that it wants to create Reverse Sexism without uncoupling itself from some. pretty foundational patriarchal ideas. it ascribes to the (tired, essentialist) notion that men are inherently good at certain things, and women are inherently suited for different things
but rather than the basic subversion of “women are warriors and men are the homemakers” or even early feminist thought experiments like “traditionally ‘women’s priorities’ are given importance over ‘men’s’ (ie things are governed by council, importance is placed on childrearing, etc)”, menzoberranzan is “this society still holds to patriarchal values and women are not as good at these things which is why it’s demonstrably worse”.
the biggest tell is that they have to control the male population to maintain female dominance, the implication being that in a fair fight, men would easily overpower them. it assumes the misogynist ideas as fact that “women are inherently weaker” and also “women are duplicitous” so the drow fighting style is based on stealth and sabotage rather than “”honorable”” face- to-face combat (letting lie also the assumption that the only avenue for ambition is through military violence, and therefore still making it so that they are reliant on men, even as disposable shock troops, for their success).
the only things that keep women in charge are by stacking the numbers on a systematic level, and through sexual domination on the individual level (because clearly the only real power a woman can have over men is her sexuality).
it is a society where “men act like men” but women don’t act like women; it is evil because an act of god created an aberration against the “natural order” of things, and there is no one to tend the hearth (because if the women won’t do it, no one will)
The thing with Sanderson is that I don't mind his silly, fantasy swears like "Nights!" "Rust and ruin!" "Starvin'," and so on - I have even been known to say "storms" myself just for fun. They're a bit ridiculous, especially considering that almost every society on every planet follows similar swearing conventions. (Yes, they also swear by the local religion's tenets and deities, and occasionally have something more unique, but all the same!) But you know what? I'm fine with it. I'm not a fan of harsh language in real life, and I appreciate that I don't have to encounter much of it in the Cosmere (they still use words like "damn" and "hell," but I'm ok with that in my reading.)
BUT even if I take all that as given,
I can't quite suspend my disbelief that EVERYONE in Sanderson's books swear their little fantasy swears all the time. Like - yes, there are some people who swear a blue streak all the time in any mood. But in Sanderson's works it's pretty much EVERYONE. Storms, storms, storms, stormin' Stormfather storm it! With few exceptions, everyone, both in their dialogue and their free indirect discourse, swears like a sailor. I get that these books often include various cultures meeting each other, and the local swears can help distinguish who's who, but come on.
It doesn't offend me because they're not actually profane or degrading words, but I do find it silly because it's a lost opportunity to further define character. There should be some characters who never swear, because it doesn't make sense given their temperament/background. There should be some characters who only drop a "Stormfather!" in intense moments. There should be some societies/planets where swearing isn't really considered a big deal, and some with very strict social/class/religious attitudes toward swearing, and so on, and in ALL these societies there should be a variety of personal attitudes toward language.
I’ve never seen any Dracula movie (I knew some of the general story from being alive for 30+ years and I’m now doing Dracula Daily), and seeing your posts about the awful choices the adaptations have made make me really happy with my life choices of not having watched any. I need the Muppets to make an adaptation; they haven’t let me down yet.
Okay, but when are we going to get an actually textually accurate Dracula adaptation instead of the endless schlock we have been foisted with to date? We have a legion of new Dracula fans who are INTIMATELY informed about the book thanks to reading it closely in small (or uh, not so small) chunks every day and writing extensive analysis about it afterward, so I am just saying. There is a market for this.
Spent the whole day drawing two particular main characters from Sherlock Holmes (Soviet adaptation). kissing passionately. plus a few comforting home vibed sketches. I might share some of them, i suppose, if my shame lets me do so. Anyway, its 12 am at the moment and - after a day of not getting up from drawing,
I kind of feel like i won this life ?
The healing power of drawing what you actually want fellas.
