I don't consider rewritable CD's and rewritable DVD's to be obsolete. They are way too fucking novel and rad to be obsolete.

Unless your house had multiple phone lines (not TOO uncommon, especially after the internet became a reality) you could not be on the phone and the internet at the same time.
Picking up the receiver while online kicked you off of the internet.
Having your own phone line as a teenager was a Big Deal.
Younger writers. Please, just know that you could not skip to different songs on a cassette tape, that’s CDs. With tapes you pressed fast forward or rewind and prayed.
Also, VHS tapes did not have menu screens. Your only options were play, fast forward, rewind, pause, stop, or eject.
Y’all are making me feel like the crypt keeper here, I’m begging you 😭

Do you have any crumbs of the Stan twins bonding in your JF au? How do they take care of one another in their own little ways? Do they follow specific routines when taking care of one another?
[Stan Twin Post]
[Art by @tearosepedall]
Everything grouped together + transcript below (& bonus sketch)
[Panel 1: Stan asking Jerk Ford for help with a cell phone]
[Panel 2:
Rando, suddenly nervous: *Flirting* Stan, clueless: *Flustered* Jerk Ford, crushing a juice box in his fist: *Foe*]
[Panel 3: Jerk Ford hugging Stan → Stan returning the hug]
[Panel 4: It's nighttime and Stanley is asleep at the desk in front of his computer. Jerk Ford puts a blanket over him and takes his glasses off for him. There's also a disorderly pile of papers nearby.
The next morning, Stan is still sleeping and he now has a sticky note on his forehead that says 'You're Welcome'. His glasses are folded nearby, he still has the blanket on, and there's a pillow under his chin. The paperwork nearby has been neatly organized]
[Panel 5: Stan is smiling and clasping his hands together tightly. Jerk Ford has an arm around him, and is looking at the audience angrily. They are equally as angry as each other, but Stan is keeping his composure together]
[Panel 6: Both Stan and Jerk Ford are wearing safety goggles and a lab coat. Stan is holding a beaker and a test tube, Jerk Ford is holding an active blowtorch and a glass vial.
Teaching 7th Grade Stan: Today we're gonna be looking at PH level. Jerk Ford: And next lesson, I'm going to teach you how to seal an ampule. Stan: No.]
+bonus
[Mario Kart]
Stanley (in general) will play either as Bowser or Donkey Kong. While Ford would play as Mario because he doesn't know what to pick.
#The Artist Has Spoken#Jerk Ford AU#Jerk Ford#Teacher Stan#Chemistry Teacher Stan#Stanley still struggles with modern technology like cellphones just like his canon counterpart#Big brother Jerk Ford WILL keep those thirsty hoes away from his brother until the day he dies#Jerk Ford doesn't know what to pick because he doesn't really like videogames#He doesn't hate them but they don't appeal to him#So he'd pick the box art character of course#If you think that Jerk Ford would never cheat against Stan because of how much he loves his brother you'd be wrong#He has older sibling supremacy to maintain after all#So he actually EXTRA cheats against Stanley#When they played rock-paper-scissors as kids and they both have rock#Jerk Ford would say he automatically won because the extra finger means he has 'super rock'#Same with paper#Stanford Pines#Ford Pines#Grunkle Ford#Stanley Pines#Stan Pines#Grunkle Stan#Gravity Falls#Gravity Falls AU#AU#JFAU

OP: Check out. The fully-sexual charged cinematic movement design.
Cnetizens: How did the director come up with the idea to have him kneel on a playing card, adding so much aesthetic energy, is that some kind of genius?

#china#cdramas#dramas#lmao#They are siblings and they're discussing serious matters#this scene is actually rather heavy because the younger brother is involved in drug trafficking#carrying more than 50 grams of heroin will result in a death sentence in china let alone being involved in drug trafficking#the older brother is a gangster king#but even he doesn't dare to get involved in the drug business because it will bring about the demise of his family#sorry for digression I mean how did the director make this scene which has absolutely nothing to do with sex#so sexually charged?#btw there're many posts with rich information about China's crackdown on drug crimes on xhs and douyin#especially about how the four major drug-trafficking families in Myanmar were wiped out overnight#they buried undercover Chinese counter-narcotics police alive and kidnapped and brutally excuted civilians#so if you're interested you can go with the key words 缅甸四大家族覆灭 on xhs and douyin#cnetizens' views on drugs are related to modern Chinese history#the first chapter of modern history in high school textbooks is the opium wars#There's a very dark joke on xhs about which country in the world would least like China to withdraw from the P5#and the answer is the UK#because it's in the first chapter of China's modern history#the Destruction of opium at Humen in 1839#no offence but Breaking Bad can't last for more than one episode if it happens in china because of the sewer detection technology#they can detect the tiniest amount of drugs in feces in a body of water the size of a lake for up to six months#which can be quickly locked down to neighbourhoods and portals#Once a foreigner was caught smuggling and selling 222.035 kg drugs in China and sentenced to death with two other Chinese associates#his country's prime minister asked for his extradition#cnetizens commented that there was an opium war and he still dare to come to China to sell drugs be like 找死court death#All the above information is to explain the gangster king's attitude towards his brother's drug business

zane and kai bonded in the early seasons by discovering new music together. both didnt really have a great access to it growing up (there was an only an old radio or maybe a scratchy vinyl player in ignacia's library and zane's village had no electricity) so they mainly grew up hearing their respective villages' traditional live music. Hearing those 'end-of-2012-mashup' compilations changed both of their lives
#i loveee love love thinking about the implications of everyones backgrounds during the early seasons#cole grew up in the suburbs of ninjago city and also came from a rich (rich?? lou is rich right? hes famous?) family#so he came from the most privileged (in terms of wealth/location) background but not the most loving family#meanwhile jay had a very very close-knit family but he grew up poorer and more isolated in a desert but was still surrounded by technology#hashtag bring back jays country accent 2025#both nya and kai and zane came from very rural areas (though zanes more rural if i can remember). ignacia had bamboo telephone poles#but you see little to no tech in the rest of the village so its safe to assume the little electricity they do have isn't the highest qualit#zanes village in my mind was a very tight community. It takes a village to raise a child yada yada. i think it was smaller than ignacia too#which adds to the everyone knows everyone aspect#theres also the factor that kai and nya seem?? quite separated from the rest of their village? their shop is on a hill fairly far from the#main community from what i remember in the pilots#i do think that when their parents first disappeared lots of village members stepped up to support them the best they could#but as kai and nya got older the help became less due to a mix of the two's own stubbornness and also the villagers deeming them old enough#with zane i imagine it to be an almost. Everyone's family kinda dynamic. people supporting people#but i loveee the added aspects of like. Different slang that everyone would use or music or clothes#im also just gonna guess that kai nya and zane didnt have access to like? videogames and stuff?#maybe kai and nya a little when their parents were around bc they cld afford it but like i said ignacia doesnt seem very high tech#so their first times playing would be with jay (who made his own little versions of gameboys and nintendos yada yada) and cole (who grew up#with a playstation)#theres also traditions and culture to think about!!!! the rural areas would probably have more conservative mindsets but also more#individual traditions. So it would be very interesting to see what kai nya zane picked up from their childhoods#and how it differs to jay and cole (mainly cole since he had the most 'typical' childhood)#URGHHH im going on such a rant but I DONT CARE. MY BLOG MY RULES#miz talks#ninjago#ninjago kai#ninjago zane#oppositeshipping#(i had to i loveee them)#when u and gang are both equally as astounded at techno music

The whole Star Wars universe is so insane actually it's making my head hurt
Putting aside the fact that the entire galaxy is interconnected via space travel with more cultures and societies than the human mind can comprehend, the history is so, so old. The spacefaring history of the galaxy goes 100,000 years into the past, that's twice as much as the time between today and the extinction of neanderthals. And look how long it took us to figure out space travel, the history of individual planets will be even older. Look how long ago before the movie timeline SWTOR takes place, and there's already so many ancient ruins. No matter how far back you go, there will always be something older. Lost cities, technology, cultures covering the surfaces of planets. Entire civilizations built on whalefalls they believe to be mountains. So many remains of space vessels scattered on planetary surfaces, and even more that were left to float through space forever, their crews long dead. The spaces between planets are vast and there is nothing that would allow corrosion and decay except the UV radiation from stars. Stray too far from regular hyperspace routes and you might encounter these ghosts.
The entire galaxy is a graveyard
#star wars#going insane here#there's a certain horror to a universe so vast and old#imagine it's the late Old Republic era and you're just some guys with a ship and your navigation fails#and you pop out of hyperspace in the middle of bumfuck nowhere#and your radars detect a ship that just looks weird and doesn't respond to communication#and when you come close enough you see a vessel on the level of our Apollo ships. no hyperdrive. engines based on fossil fuels#the ship is older than your own species#and the entire time you study the lack of basic safety measures present even in the oldest ships you know and the woefully primitive#and unreliable technology and design. you're acutely aware that there used to be people travelling in those

Determined to use her skills to fight inequality, South African computer scientist Raesetje Sefala set to work to build algorithms flagging poverty hotspots - developing datasets she hopes will help target aid, new housing, or clinics.
From crop analysis to medical diagnostics, artificial intelligence (AI) is already used in essential tasks worldwide, but Sefala and a growing number of fellow African developers are pioneering it to tackle their continent's particular challenges.
Local knowledge is vital for designing AI-driven solutions that work, Sefala said.
"If you don't have people with diverse experiences doing the research, it's easy to interpret the data in ways that will marginalise others," the 26-year old said from her home in Johannesburg.
Africa is the world's youngest and fastest-growing continent, and tech experts say young, home-grown AI developers have a vital role to play in designing applications to address local problems.
"For Africa to get out of poverty, it will take innovation and this can be revolutionary, because it's Africans doing things for Africa on their own," said Cina Lawson, Togo's minister of digital economy and transformation.
"We need to use cutting-edge solutions to our problems, because you don't solve problems in 2022 using methods of 20 years ago," Lawson told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a video interview from the West African country.
Digital rights groups warn about AI's use in surveillance and the risk of discrimination, but Sefala said it can also be used to "serve the people behind the data points". ...
'Delivering Health'
As COVID-19 spread around the world in early 2020, government officials in Togo realized urgent action was needed to support informal workers who account for about 80% of the country's workforce, Lawson said.
"If you decide that everybody stays home, it means that this particular person isn't going to eat that day, it's as simple as that," she said.
In 10 days, the government built a mobile payment platform - called Novissi - to distribute cash to the vulnerable.
The government paired up with Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) think tank and the University of California, Berkeley, to build a poverty map of Togo using satellite imagery.
Using algorithms with the support of GiveDirectly, a nonprofit that uses AI to distribute cash transfers, the recipients earning less than $1.25 per day and living in the poorest districts were identified for a direct cash transfer.
"We texted them saying if you need financial help, please register," Lawson said, adding that beneficiaries' consent and data privacy had been prioritized.
The entire program reached 920,000 beneficiaries in need.
"Machine learning has the advantage of reaching so many people in a very short time and delivering help when people need it most," said Caroline Teti, a Kenya-based GiveDirectly director.
'Zero Representation'
Aiming to boost discussion about AI in Africa, computer scientists Benjamin Rosman and Ulrich Paquet co-founded the Deep Learning Indaba - a week-long gathering that started in South Africa - together with other colleagues in 2017.
"You used to get to the top AI conferences and there was zero representation from Africa, both in terms of papers and people, so we're all about finding cost effective ways to build a community," Paquet said in a video call.
In 2019, 27 smaller Indabas - called IndabaX - were rolled out across the continent, with some events hosting as many as 300 participants.
One of these offshoots was IndabaX Uganda, where founder Bruno Ssekiwere said participants shared information on using AI for social issues such as improving agriculture and treating malaria.
Another outcome from the South African Indaba was Masakhane - an organization that uses open-source, machine learning to translate African languages not typically found in online programs such as Google Translate.
On their site, the founders speak about the South African philosophy of "Ubuntu" - a term generally meaning "humanity" - as part of their organization's values.
"This philosophy calls for collaboration and participation and community," reads their site, a philosophy that Ssekiwere, Paquet, and Rosman said has now become the driving value for AI research in Africa.
Inclusion
Now that Sefala has built a dataset of South Africa's suburbs and townships, she plans to collaborate with domain experts and communities to refine it, deepen inequality research and improve the algorithms.
"Making datasets easily available opens the door for new mechanisms and techniques for policy-making around desegregation, housing, and access to economic opportunity," she said.
African AI leaders say building more complete datasets will also help tackle biases baked into algorithms.
"Imagine rolling out Novissi in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast ... then the algorithm will be trained with understanding poverty in West Africa," Lawson said.
"If there are ever ways to fight bias in tech, it's by increasing diverse datasets ... we need to contribute more," she said.
But contributing more will require increased funding for African projects and wider access to computer science education and technology in general, Sefala said.
Despite such obstacles, Lawson said "technology will be Africa's savior".
"Let's use what is cutting edge and apply it straight away or as a continent we will never get out of poverty," she said. "It's really as simple as that."

research tips for electric train whump:
-INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE SOURCES ARE YOUR FRIEND! There’s not much stuff specifically about trains but basic concepts (maintenance and repair of AC or DC motors, transformers, rectifiers, other heavy electrical equipment) largely carry over from sources about elevators or substations. There’s a lot of good videos on youtube about these topics, look into stuff aimed at apprentice electricians or industrial maintenance, it will generally be more visual/metaphor and less math-heavy if you struggle with that.
-many “breakdowns” are actually due to power infrastructure issues- third rail and catenary wires have different problems and these further vary based on how old they are. Fixed-tension catenaries on the former Pennsylvania Railroad are a notorious issue. The more modern the line, the less weird stuff you’ll have, but much of the US, parts of the UK, and a number of spots in mainland Europe have more unusual and antiquated electrification systems. And this is also an issue with model trains between brands and eras!
-On a related note, pantograph designs have varied by time and place and have different advantages/disadvantages/issues. You even have times when they have a uniquely bad time with old catenaries, like old Comet EMUs specifically getting snarled in those constant-tension PRR catenaries
-Never underestimate how “dumb” and un-computery a lot of electric trains actually are, especially circa the 80s. “Toaster” isn’t even an inaccurate insult for older DC-motor trains, they literally brake using huge resistors that put out a ton of heat… like a giant toaster. And the really old, simple stuff tended to last a stupidly long time in service so you can 1000% wave off a 20s-era engine or EMU in the 80s.
-If you want some really easy ones that have actually happened before: connecting to too strong of a power source and getting FRIED, and having wires ripped out willy-nilly by techs not familiar with electric trains that don’t know what they’re doing. Weaponized incompetence with anything electrical checks out with how even a lot of train people know very little about it and don’t care.
-model trains also have a lot of beginner-friendly electrical info you can work from
#stex#starlight express#a lot of this stuff also applies to diesel-electric engines (which is almost all diesels)#they just have an engine as a generator vs connecting to an external power source#older electric locomotives will have a lot more in common with appliances or factory machinery than computers#rail is generally technologically conservative since it’s VERY heavy duty and high reliability and likes to reuse vs replace#it’s actually really handy to know the basic electrical stuff that goes into them because it’s applicable to tons of everyday stuff

guys. i need your opinion of this. because i'm genuinely so confused now
what time period is the professor layton series in?? the prequel trilogy and the main trilogy. when are they supposed to be taking place
i could've sworn one of the games (though i forget which) mentions that someone's been to the moon already which would put them at least in the late 60s into the 70s going by our world's timeline... but i don't know maybe space travel was discovered earlier in this universe???
#melonposting#professor layton#it would be useful if i just had a comprehensive timeline of events in this series so it would be easier to plot things out#but just for the sake of argument... just for funzies...#let's say randall disappeared in 1949#then miracle mask takes place in 1967 (18 years after randall's disappearance in 1949)#and then extrapolating backwards - if luke is 11 and hershel is 35 in miracle mask#then luke was born in 1956 and hershel in 1932#luke is 15 when katrielle is born. so she's born in 1971#he and layton go missing ten years later. that'd be 1981#and then it's another eleven years (when she's 21) that kat has her mystery-solving agency and finds her father and everything. so 1992#(which makes the more modern nonsense we see in her game/anime more plausible)#and just for the heck of it. if we're presuming alfendi is 29 at the same time that katrielle is 21 then he's 8 years older than her#putting his birth year somewhere around 1963#and then... hm... luke is 13 in unwound future. and the explosion in which claire died was said to have happened 10 years prior#so when luke was 3 years old... in 1959#and clive was 13 at that time. exactly 10 years older than luke. so he would've been born around 1946#of course it's hard to pinpoint exact dates when you don't know anyone's birthday or what month a game is taking place in#and of course this is making a ton of assumptions#among other things that the moon landing really did take place in 1969 in this universe#i don't even remember which game mentioned the moon landing! which is annoying!#i think it was unwound future so i tried to have it in the ballpark of 1969 (by placing miracle mask two years prior in 1967)#(going off of luke's ages of 11 in miracle mask and 13 in unwound future as reference of the time passage between them)#at the very least i'm sure the moon landing was referenced somewhere within the prequel or main triologies#so unwound future is the last game it could've been mentioned in. so either it takes place in 1969 or an earlier game in the timeline does#but i'm willing to allow for the moon landing to have taken place before 1969 in the laytonverse. their technology is very weird after all#if i place it somewhere earlier in the 60s then the dates can be pushed back. and this fic i'm reading would be totally canon-compliant!#cuz it describes angela & henry 5 years after randall's disappearance being somewhere in the 1940s#which would only be possible if the moon landing takes place earlier for the dates to be pushed back that far#(of course a minor decade discrepancy does nothing to ruin my enjoyment of the fic. i just think it would be nice to make it all work out)

I’m making an animatic for the Summerstuck AU (AU where Phineas and Ferb are Alternian Trolls from Homestuck) and I’ve gotten to the part where their former lusii (fantastical white animal guardians who raise the Troll Children of Alternia, since all the adults are off doing space adventures) are thrown into the Kernel Sprites (colorful floating ghost-like game constructs that base their forms mostly off the player’s deceased loved ones, who act as guides for the players as they play the game that ends the universe and gives birth to the next one) and I’ve decided that Ferb’s former Lusus should be Steve (a kaiju chameleon in the show who Ferb is very emotionally attached to). When deciding how to portray Steve’s remains, I sort of naturally gravitated towards having him be taxidermied in Ferb’s shed.
The unintentional ramifications of this is that I have inadvertently implied that, on some cosmic level, Ferb Fletcher is a Harley.
#phineas and ferb#homestuck#ferb fletcher#jade harley#summerstuck#meta#there’s no real reason why Ferb Fetcher can’t be a Harley tho#other than the implication in the mission marvel special that Ferb is actually part Time Lord#who knows maybe Grandma Harley is Ferb’s grandmother on his biological mother’s side#… wait do all the historical figures that Jake Harley was meant to be the deadbeat dad of just not exist in the alpha timeline or#do they just exist anyway for some inexplicable reason a la Dad Egbert vs Dad Crocker?#I mean I personally prefer to ignore the whole ‘’Jake Harley is the deadbeat dad of a bunch of historical figures for no real reason’’#thing anyway so liiiiiike#time is fucky in the Phineas and Ferb universe anyway but Obama was President during the shows summer#which means that summer has to either take place somewhere in 2009-2016 or it’s just a ‘’don’t worry about it’’ sorta thing#of course the Dwampyverse timeline could be accelerated due to various factors#it is implied that Phineas and Ferb invented the modern smartphone which is how the show justifies the abandonment of flip phones#though their dad is an antiquarian which could also be a neat excuse for the Flynn Fletcher household to have older technologies in it.#and of course there is also the ‘’it’s a kid’s cartoon don’t worry about it’’ approach#my personal headcanon is still that Phineas and Ferb fucked with time to make their summer last longer without anyone noticing#which could be part of why the time space continuum started unraveling itself in ‘’last day of summer’’#it’s not like that would be impossible for them after all#fucking with time and space is their favorite hobby#anyway#where was I going with this#looney mooney rants
