Heroforge: Jedi (Part One)

I'm back- with JEDI! Well, actually, only about half of them. I still need to make a few (like Kit Fisto, Quinlan, Barris, Jocasta Nu, etc; they're going to be in another post). But I think you'll enjoy who I have so far!

Also. I forgot to do honorifics for the Clones, because this is a fantasy world, and everyone has honorifics. Mea culpa, I'll edit that post as soon as I'm done with this one, so you can go check that out if you want.

Sir Anakin Skywalker, the Valiant. His lightsaber is a dark-blue greatsword, with the Kyber Crystal embedded in the pommel. I chose it to represent the facts that his attacks are very aggressive but leave room for little defense- as it's a two-handed weapon, he has to defend by using offensive measures. (Also, it's a double-edged blade. *coughs in foreshadowing*.) In addition- his prosthetic arm is an enchanted golden gauntlet, to reference Clone Wars (2003), because I am a sucker for Clone Wars (2003) as much as I am a sucker for The Clone Wars (2008).

Sir Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Noble (alternatively: the Silver-Tongued). Okay, shut up for a second and let me nerd about his lightsaber. You may notice that he fights with a sword-and-shield combo. This is to reference his mastery of Soresu, a defense-heavy form of lightsaber combat. His crossguard- in which is embedded his light-blue kyber crystal- and his shield shape also reference the Jedi Crest. (And his hair is dark red because I said so, that's why.)

Squire Ahsoka Tano (later to be granted the honorary title of Lady Ahsoka the Perseverant). SHE'S FINALLY DONE! As you can see, she's differed slightly from her original concept (which I will link here)- her headscarf is now blue, and she has a different skirt (which I realize you can't see in the original picture, but I assure you, it was different), which I changed to match the simpler tastes of the Jedi (sidenote: as you will see, Jedi do have a loose habit, or the uniform dress of a monastic order, but padawans are allowed to be a bit more liberal with their clothing because they are not fully professed members of the order yet). For lightsabers, she wields two Togrutan daggers with the kyber crystals embedded in the pommels, just like Anakin :) Since she dual-wields, I thought it would be more practical for them to be shortblades, so she doesn't accidentally slice herself; her fighting style is still highly acrobatic, just like in canon. ALSO! Her facial markings! I mentioned in the original sneak peek that I'd be writing lore on the different races, because most of them are just different human cultures in this AU, so I'll expand on those now! Togruta have a rich tradition of facial painting (and later tattooing, when a child comes of age) and each Togruta wears a unique pattern that blends elements of the markings of their family. Since Ahsoka is a Temple Youngling and thus doesn't remember her family's markings, she made her own based on the family she found in the Jedi Order. Her markings on Heroforge don't exactly match up to her canon markings but this explanation would work in either universe: her cheek markings represent Plo Koon and resemble the horns on his helmet; her forehead markings resemble Anakin's lightsaber, because he taught her to stand up and fight for herself and others; and her eyeliner markings represent Obi-Wan and how he taught her to be observant to the Force and to always look with empathy towards others.

Archprior Yoda, the Wise. Sci-Fi creatures are actually quite easy to adapt into fantasy creatures- I just gave him hooves, horns, and a tail. The most intersting thing I want to point out is that he wields a fencing rapier as his lightsaber (you can't see it in these pictures, but his kyber crystal is in the pommel)- and, as you'll see when I post his pictures, so does his apprentice Dooku. Yoda's habit also has some additional accents, to denote his status as Archprior.

Sir Mace Windu, the Eternally Stressed Just. Mace might just be my favorite redesign, because LOOK AT HIS ARMOR! It's all tinged purple, and his pauldrons and gauntlets are lionesque, referencing his creation and mastery of Vaapad. Additionally, and I know you can't really see it from these angles but trust me on this one, he wields an executioner's sword. These have a blunted end as they were not supposed to be used in combat, and Mace wields one to represent his statues as an arbiter of justice >:) This means he has to be extremely skilled with it to make it work effectively. His kyber crystal seems to be embedded in the pommel, but in actuality it runs all the way up the blade. This was for no particular reason, I just thought it looked cool.

Sir Plo Koon, the Compassionate. His helmet is meant to reference his canon counterpart's head silhouette, and these helmets are a mark of pride for the Kel Dor- they're passed down through the paternal line and can be thousands of generations old. So, not exactly like Children of the Watch Mandos- they're not forbidden to remove their helmets, but they rarely do, to show pride in their lineage. Also, Plo wears a Wolfpack pauldron and a wolf fur cape, because he is a proud father :) His lightsaber has its kyber crystals embedded in its hand-guard and the base of the blade.

Sir Ki-Adi-Mundi, the Insightful. Much like the Kel Dor, the Cereans have familial helmets, but they aren't necessarily heirlooms, and they're matrilineal- each Cerean will make his or her own unique helmet against the pattern of his or her mother. (Kel Dor, Cereans, and Togruta are all fiercely tribal- it's speculated they share a common ancestor culture.) He wields a dark blue cutlass, that burns light blue, with its kyber crystal in the pommel.

Lady Shaak Ti, the Merciful. Like all fully-fledged adult Togruta, her facial markings are tattooed, and she wears a horned headdress over her headscarf. In addition, she wears a cape (to mimic her much longer, adult lekku). Her skirt features the same braided detailing as the braid on her headscarf, and she wields an aquamarine-colored scimitar, with the kyber crystal in the crossguard.

Lady Aayla Secura, the Forthright. She wields a violet-blue shortsword, with the kyber crystal making up the pommel. She also wears the traditional Twi'lek kerchief. (I'm sorry there's not much to say about her, I haven't deeply explored the Twi'lek culture in this AU yet. I'll have more probably when I do my Rebels set.)

Lady Luminara Unduli, the Honorable. She wields a seafoam-green blade with the kyber crystal in the crossguard. Unlike Togruta markings, Mirialan markings are completely personal and need not bear any resemblance to one's family's markings. They are, however, still tattooed. The front panel of her skirt also boasts a traditional Mirialan pattern, in the same metallic colors as the metal of her Mirialan gauntlets. (I think now is a good time to mention that, as you may have seen, while there is a habit enforced for the order, individual Jedi are allowed- and in fact, encouraged- to also import features of their traditional dress into the habit. So while they all wear similar clothes, the colors, skirts, shoes, and armor/jewelry/facial markings are unique from Jedi to Jedi.)

Bonus: The Disaster Duos (I would have made a singular one with all three of them, but Heroforge is stupid and won't let me do that >:( )

That’s just the thing, isn’t it? Wei Ying feels nothing. He doesn’t feel anything, and this emptiness should scare him. He knows he should be scared. He wants to be scared. He isn’t. Fear itself is never scary; fear is just a response. It means that your body wants you alive. It’s the absence of terror that scares him.

I had SO MUCH FUN with this bind! This one had a lot of firsts for me, and is one that I really poured my heart into due to its particular emotional impact on me (tl;dr - I was a piano major in college, burned out, this fic helped me fall in love with music again). It's an Untamed WangXian Pianists AU (TW for anyone interested that it deals with attempted suicide and life following that) and I tried to tie that into the design details literally everywhere I could think of. Black and white cover paper, music note scene breaks, and my absolute favorite part to create: sheet music title pages. The particular song used for that is a recurring motif in the fic and one that means a lot to me personally, and I knew I wanted to include it somehow. Unfortunately I couldn't find an existing image of the sheet music that was high enough quality to use how I wanted, so I used a sheet music program to input it myself!

This book was my first time doing any sort of edge decoration, and I had fun figuring out how to splatter paint with a toothbrush (Spouse: is that supposed to be blood? Me: no but also... kind of?) and it was also my first time doing endbands! (Shout out to the friends who walked me through it over voice chat one evening, and then rolled their eyes when I announced that I'd torn them out and done them over again. Twice.) I went with red and black for both of those parts to match the main characters canonical color scheme, and also because I liked the dramatic pop of color against the black and white cover.

Spine titling was done once again with a foil quill, and I decided to paint the Chinese title of the fic on the cover. I couldn't find a paintbrush that let me get as fine tipped and detailed as I wanted so I may or may not have used a toothpick to paint it on.

I prevailed over: somehow deleted half of my page numbers and had to reprint the WHOLE THING! Forgot to measure the boards as part of my spine width and had to do surgery with 2mm strips of paper! (Thankfully had allowed plenty of hinge because I didn't realize until I'd finished ALL of the titling and I would have cried if I couldn't salvage it) Truly this is my child and I adore how it turned out. Is it perfect? No. Are there things I would change? Sure. But I learned and I did and I'm so goddamn proud of it!

My name is Ley Summers. I am a high school senior currently studying to become a nurse, but my true calling in life is acting and other performing arts. Drawing the Rest of the Copy Ability Stars, Round 1!

I wasted a lot on this... so let's get this show on the road!

Yes, there are oh-so-many abilities that are canon in Technician Uprising, but HAL doesn't bother making ability stars for them. And so, as an AU owner... I have a full reign to design all of them! I am going to comment on each of them as well! Click down below to learn more about the process of making each star and what I think about the ability overall.

From top left to bottom right:

Balloon - The first one I draw overall (and the first ability fully illustrated, though I wanted to design Light fully first). This ability really just appeared in Canvas Curse, which is canon to TU, and due to a totally not secret plan of mines, I had to turn this into a full-fledged ability. Honestly. It just existed for Canvas Curse, so I hope the revamp moveset will give it a bit more versatility outside just "haha easier to control ball go brr".

Light - The MOST underused and underrated ability, FIGHT ME. God I love the concept of Light being used as a power but MAN. BIGGEST OOF FOR THIS ABILITY. Literally exists as early as in Adventure and was left for the slumps, never to be adapted. Watch as I make this a permanent use ability. I had to check the illustration of this ability in Adventure to get the icon.

Metal - Once again taken here due to a due to a totally not secret plan of mines. Honestly this is just Stone but Stone Change is always on. But I'll figure out what to do with it. And no, we're not using the scroll's additional ability, that's just Ball (which is also here in this round). I really just ctrl+c ctrl+p the icon from Squeak Squad directly.

Missile - Oh I would make this a Technician Mode... IF JET DOESN'T HAVE F^CKING MISSILE SALVO, making this ability UTTERLY OBSOLETE. Thanks HAL, but okay. Honestly it's pretty... eh. Maybe I haven't seen it too much in action. Also redrawing the Missile was. Hm. Okay I guess. I struggled setting up stroke thickness and setting since I'm limited to two colors and I don't want it to look weird, but the flame exhaust effect on the back is nice.

Bubble - I would make this a Technician Mode but at the same time I'm not so sure, it's already perfect enough to, you know, not change much... while the point of the modes is to EXACTLY twist the abilities' skills in a sense (at least for Technician. Idk. Most of Robobot Armor's ones are just normal attacks with bigger damage™ and that's it). Thank you Squeak Squad icons for saving me once again. Btw, Animal aside, this is my favorite ability in Squeak Squad. Though I'd change it to just trapping opponents in bubbles in my AU perhaps. Idk, turning them immediately to ability stars sounded... OP?

Ghost - Hahahaha spooky. I would also make this a Technician Mode... except I have an OC with Technician + Ghost with a rather complicated backstory, so, uh, no. I tried drawing a ghost, ends up just being frustrated because the proportions aren't right, but hey I did it!

Freeze - I cheated from Air Ride. Anyways, I guess I remember a Kirby gijinka artist (KirbyTardos, if I recall that username) who noted this might be more focused on defense, which I'll happily steal. Sir if you see this, I hope you're doing well, I should really check your comic series. Anyways... this one was supposedly fused with Ice nowadays, but whatever, it can co-exist I suppose. Trying to make it fancy but ends up giving up and settled for this.

Paint - Uhhhh... Isn't this just Artist? Nope! Decided that Artist and Paint are for two different specialties just like Ice and Freeze, in this case Artist is for precision while Paint is for R A N G E. I think their style should be differentiate too, with Artist you have the user having much cleaner, detailed art that needs thinking into it, while Paint is just. Graffiti. Go crazy. Go insane. Spread 387493743 splashes of paint to the wall of your neighbours!! I tried to recreate the icon in Super Star Ultra, but then I realized it looked wrong every single time and after more tweaking I just leave it like this. Could've done it better. Maybe I will revisit it someday.

Animal - Another one I could've done better I guess. Stealing again from Squeak Squad's icons! Tried adding a claw mark. Didn't work. F^ck. But oh well! ANYWAYS I LOVE THIS ABILITY HOW DID HAL DIDN'T ADD THIS TO FORGOTTEN LAND??? NOOOOO!!

Magic - Insert that one song from Milgram here. I love Deco*27. Anyways. Went simple with this one. Three cards and a magic hat that I stole from Squeak Squad. I also stole the colors of the illustration as we already have abilities with black and white ability stars and I doubt I can change em much to make it distinct. Yeah, yet once again taken here due to a due to a totally not secret plan of mines.

Ball - Ballin huh? You guessed it, it is, yet again, once again taken here due to a due to a totally not secret plan of mines. I don't think this one has to change a lot, it's just so goofy. I like its vibes, but I bet it will be a pain in the ass to use properly in-game somehow. Shoutout for Nightmare in Dreamland's little ability illustration for this. Also it's hard to design the ball icon itself so I went with a beach ball.

Laser - I kinda want this to be a Technician Mode, so we'll see this one with great interest! I wanted other colors but the illustration artworks only gave me colors that already exist or too close to other ability star's colors... then I realize that not all copy abilities have to share their outfit colors with the ability star, because Wing existed - it doesn't have blue but the star's blue-ish anyways! So I decided to go for pink, the color of the laser beam that was shot in the illustration!

Iron - Yes this is canon. Yes I will have to revamp this to avoid this being just Stone 2.0 but with deflect system, and in fact, I have made a full moveset from this long time ago! It's now a construct creating ability, creating simple things such as pillars and stuff. Still retains the "deflection with staff" technique and the one that reminds you of Stone Change... but I made the latter time-restricted rather than "as long as you hold it you're invisible" spiel. Anyways. The ability hat, as well as some iron blocks to hammer it to the point that HEY THIS ABILITY'S ENTIRE THING IS IRONS and not just "snek????"

Top - Went with green because that color is rare for copy ability stars, THANK GOD. It's also one that I purposely made canon because it's funny! Also young me already made a full-fledged moveset for this, thank f^ck. Tried to make it look like the top is tipping and gliding. And still spinning. Kinda looks smooth me thinks.

Baton - Oh god the ability's design itself is kinda mid imo but I'LL REDESIGN THAT JUST YOU SEE. Anyways. This is another one in the "so underused it hurts" category. For some reason the ability is one-use in the anime!!! Wow!! F^ck it!! Young me made a full-fledged moveset so WE'LL GO BY THAT THANKS. I went with pink... again... Or red... uh... I guess it's just pale dark pink, I used color picker on the staff don't ask. Tried to bring more of a Suplex vibe with a puffball holding the staff as if spinning it. S p e e n. I like the concept of the ability though, Motion Manipulation baby!

We might have more abilities on the go, but we'll see. I might move on to redrawing all Technician Modes after this. I'll also update the spreadsheet eventually with all these damn stars WAHOO.

In genshin and hsr who are your favorites? It can be a category or fave from each body type/gender/element whatever and to balance it out, do you have any hsr/genshin characters you don't vibe with doesn't have to be outright hate but just not your fave either be story/design/personality or any reason really

How about I once again ramble on far too long and just rank all the characters from each series? (I love to yap, I'm the worst yapper) Only doing HSR right now but I'll do Genshin another day!

I love her dearly, and I think her design is stunning. The only reason I give her such a neutral rating is because the story hasn't really let me connect with her yet. She still feels like a stranger despite being with us the longest, and I really want more content focused on her, her past and other Trailblazers she's known.

Design wise, I love her. I love Numby, and I think she was the perfect way to introduce us to the higher ups of the IPC. I just don't really care much for her character. I don't connect with her, but I don't dislike her either. I want to see her and Aventurine interact more in the future, I need to know if they're friends or they hate each other's guts.

Biased because baby boy carried my ass from the start up until Aventurine knocked him off my main team. E3 with his signature Lightcone, the gatcha gods have pushed us together. Design wise I think he's rather dull, but he's a wonderful brother and I just want to squish his cheeks and tell him he's doing a good job.

One of the best designs in the game, but I feel like so much of her story was ignored in place of Blade and Dan Heng. I want more of her, I want to see her what she was like before everything went down. Give me more Jingliu lore Hoyo.

I would have given her a 9/10 before I did the cat cake quest, but after seeing how she treated those precious babies (I am a massive cat person) I was just so upset. I know that's dumb, and I do enjoy that Hoyo gave us a genuinely morally gray character. I just love cats too much-

Outside of any of the big 3 main cast who's your top 3 favorite Ro'meave in the Dynasty n why. Even if it's.not.explicitly canon I'd love to hear ur hc

Oof that's hard. I love (pretty much) all my Ro'Meaves but for very different reasons. The main contrast is loving them from a writing standpoint and loving them from a character/personality standpoint. So I'm just gonna make a list for each lol.

From a writing standpoint:

Zane I/Zane the Martyr- His story was the first one I came up when I began making the tree. I wasn't really planning on giving him much of a personality at first as I was more focused on the historical event in which he lived but he grew on me and I really like the character design I came up with for him. I have a pretty wide range of character tropes I enjoy and sometimes I just like to write someone who is just genuinely a good and kind person. Also he was kind of a badass in the end as he defended the Cathedral with a pretty noble and badass speech when the angry mob showed up.

Maela I/Maela the Mad- I'm still working on a different ask where I talk about her, but oh my god I really like her story. Unhinged women are great, but unhinged women who cause huge effects to the plot of the story? BANGER. Her story is also a deeply tragic one, and while she does some pretty awful things I can't help but feel sorry for her on some level.

Galahad I- Ok I know I literally JUST added him onto the family tree but I'm really interested in what his story is going to be. I haven't fleshed it out fully yet but I will spoil and say he straight up killed his brother

From a personality standpoint:

Caelestis I- If I got an ask for who was the most unhinged Ro'Meave to ever live (in the fun way) it'd be this fucker. Once cut out his own eye to prove a point and chopped off his own arm to make a statement.

Esma the Uncrowned- Again, I really love me a badass lawful-good character every once in a while

Astarse I/Garath I- I'm putting them as a tie because their very similar. I had fun playing with Astarse as she's Esmund's firstborn child and she probably ranks 2nd-3rd in the most unhinged Ro'Meave category. She works as a foil to Esmund and she fought beside her father in quite a few battles. Also she got half her face burnt off one time and has pretty sick character design. I like Garath I because she was really badass and rode a wyvern (techinally a lot of the 1st and 2nd generations rode a wyvern but she became the most famous wyvern rider, also her wyvern's name was Krysoff and I love him)

41. Who’s your favorite character you’ve written?

I have three.

Masamune, because beloved. I could squeeze him into hundreds of scenarios and would never have enough. Ultimate comfort right there, and... I may be fairly confident in the way I write him, considering that I theorised certain things about his motivations and personality overall, only to have those confirmed once Act II got released. (Not to say that my interpretation is perfectly canon-compliant. I tend to most enjoy situations that allow for his softer side to shine.)

Asra, because he's a sweetheart, I love his design, and he opens up sooo many opportunities for the exploration of the world of magic. I adore the dynamic he has with my OC, and, aah. They're just goofy and sweet?

And lastly, Chevalier. Probably for all the wrong reasons.

The thing with him is that... Chevalier is presented as a genius, and I wouldn't necessarily disagree with that. He's supposedly this fearsome flawless person, and MC only reinforces this notion. She seems to believe that he can do anything he sets his mind to and I'd say she admires him.

I enjoy pairing him up with my OC, Esther. Not necessarily to undermine the way he is written in canon, but to explore scenarios that are less likely to occur there, partially due to Esther's personal circumstances, partially because of the way she views him, and partially because of the way her understanding of emotion affects their dynamics. In her eyes, he's a devilishly intelligent grump with his own personal brand of social awkwardness. She sees his talents, but doesn't write off his flaws as "just the way geniuses are"... And I could probably write a whole lot more here, but let's end it with one more sentence. She sees him as a flawed man, and it is exactly that flawed person that she loves.

79. Do you have any writing advice you want to share?

I may have a couple?

Writing is a bit like a game of broken telephone. Your understanding of your work comes from within your mind. Meanwhile, the reader is supplied only with what you've written. Did you express your idea clearly? Were there moments when your reader didn't know who was talking, what was happening, or was just lost? Would somebody outside your head be able to follow your paragraphs? Were you skipping some vital information? Sometimes it is good to let a work rest so that you can forget about parts of it. It may give you a bit of an outside perspective.

"Good" is a garbage bag of a term. It can contain many things. Define your goals clearly. If you cannot explain what precisely your "good" entails, don't beat yourself up over not being "good enough".

It is counterproductive to worry about a quality of a work that hasn't even been written. Time spent on something imperfect is not wasted -- all experiences are invaluable sources of information. All that matters is taking from them.

Yes, somebody will enjoy it, even if that somebody is just you. It still counts.

admittedly i don't know much about either ibara or tori... i never watched/read kiseki series lol. i know a speed run of ibara but i wouldn't say i uh. Know her. if you get what i mean... i think she's silly though. definitely a guy i'd pick up by the scruff of the neck if i ever dig in. tori was also a character i wasn't particularly interested in so i never dug in... i remember during my twitter days thinking her fans were annoying. which to be fair i was right but that was less because of tori himself and more Twitter.

mao however? my silly guy. im a big mixed jp/south asian mao enjoyer. which relates not at all to his character but i just can't see him as pale. i see his canon art and go Whete is his pigment. i love his character... his self sacrificing nature. also he's a fuckin LOSER. he's a younger brother 2 me. he is so special. the meow meow est. funny to me that he's the 'normal' guy of trickstar yet also the most popular... i don't talk about him a lot but he's very special to me. one of the first guys i latched onto... i think i cried over him more than once. his cringe tboy gnc swag seduced me

For OCs, like when is is mandatory to like everyones OC? Some people have very stupid character backgrounds or it's literally just themself in cartoon form. The worst being a child of their favorite ship. I mean all to them for doing what makes them happy, but that doesn't mean we have to like it. Not everyone is creative or talented to make a good OC. Its like the saying: everyone can make art but not everyone can be an artist. Anyone can create a character, but not all of them are going to be good. Suck it up, don't get offended when you get criticism and keep practicing. Whether you asked for criticism or not is irrelevant, if you put something you made out for the public to see that's what you're going to get. If you don't like it go hide in a hole.

So yeah. Superman's bi. I mean obviously there's the pretty big caveat there, but same as 'Robin's dead/Robin's bi' the semantics won't really penetrate the general culture in the same way as the headline, and as I go into at the end this is still significant in a way things like this usually aren't. In any case, Superman - DC's 'main' Superman at the moment, a Superman who by pure coincidence is just a day off from sharing my own birthday - is bi. There's some conflicted feelings there: my opinion on the run thus far is mixed, obviously there's the self-serving corporate element, AND that asshole Tim Drake sort of softened us all up for this which means it isn't hitting as hard as it otherwise would which at least means I can go back to disdaining him in peace. * Lol guess I know which Superman I'd ever be allowed to write if I managed to break in. I'd sure take that gig though.

* The most long-term exciting and promising thing about Jon Kent being bi is that he's basically impossible to shuffle completely off to the side or even completely refrain from throwing major talent behind, in a way that hasn't really been the case with any other queer big two characters to date. Iceman? One of the 8 or so main Green Lanterns? That's nice. Tim Drake? That's a symbolically potent statement of intent - he's (a) Robin! - but also he hasn't mattered except for Tynion's Detective in 15 years. But Jon Kent? He's Lois Lane and Clark Kent's kid, and not an alternate future variant, nor is it a Damian situation where he can storm off on his own into obscurity. Even if he stopped being Superman,** that's a dude who's going to be around in a big way FOREVER. He'll have long-lasting runs and Black Label minis and assorted perennials to his name essentially no matter what happens, because 'Superman's son' carries a weight that arguably no other legacy character can match. Pending a truly full reboot that doesn't seem remotely in the cards he's impossible to disentangle from being one of the two most important characters in the life of the most iconic superhero of all time, and that's a completely different degree of importance than sidekick #5 or a lesser-known member of an ensemble.

💚OTP: When I first got into BNHA, Tododeku was my first OTP. Still is one of my faves along with so many others. Bakudeku, IzuOcha, etc. Midoriya deserves affection (platonically and romantically, either/or).

💚nOTP: Midoriya x All Might, like who came up with that?

💚Random headcanon: I feel like he's actually a good artist, so at least sharpens his skills overtime. We see he does draw in his journals, but they're messy sketches because well, he's in a hurry to write down info before he forgets it. But I like the thought of him having separate sketchpads he draws in and shares it with Kaminari (who I also headcanon as an artist).

Speaking of notes, I also think he's the type to have color coded notes with sticky notes used as a bookmarks or to jot down extra info.

💚Unpopular opinion: We see him wear those red sneakers all the time, but I like them. I'd wear them. Also, him being emotional is an endearing character trait. I hate how some people in the fandom just label him as a crybaby. No, he just wears his heart on his sleeve. It can be a weakness, you know, letting your emotions get the better of you (I know too well), but it's also a strength sometimes because he still shows he's compassionate towards others.

💚Song I associate with them: 'Go Beyond' by Nemraps which I recommend if any of you into nerdcore raps! Also 'So Am I' by Ava Max and (I do like the music) 'I'll Show You' by KDA.

🔥Least favorite thing about them: Eh... I don't think I do have a least favorite thing about him. Wait! His first hero costume was so... horrendous... I understood why he had it like that, hating his father and all, but... I hate it so much.

❄OTP: Tododeku, but again, so many. I got into Todobaku lately, too. And I do like Todomomo and I see Todoiida has some potential.

🔥nOTP: I refuse, absolutely refuse to ship him with Dabi.

❄Random headcanon: Maybe this is canon, I don't know, but he can sleep anywhere. I said this with Shinsou, too. I also think he like cold foods more than hot and that he has a sweet tooth. He probably didn't get to eat a lot of sweet foods when he was younger, so when the dorms were made and Satou would bake, Todoroki is one of the first to eat anything he bakes and will fight a classmate over a cookie.

🔥Unpopular opinion: He's so awkward, but it's so adorable. I don't blame him for being awkward (backstory). His little quips like napping whenever or his sense of humor is off is nice for his kind of character. I don't see him as a boring character as some folks say.

B2:S - Chapter 3

Much of this series will be about the differences and additions in the novel version, and how they contribute to my understanding of story canon. But there will be character appreciation, the odd theory and headcanon, and suchlike as well.

Here be Lujanne, Callum, Rayla, Ezran, Bait, and Soren goodness!

Spoilers for Book Two: Sky below.

Lujanne having excellent fitness for all her walking around the Moon Nexus, and she's so energetic that Callum has trouble keeping up with her! She seems like those active grandmas who almost never stop moving, who have a lifelong supply of endless stamina. It makes me wonder if Lujanne will need that level of fitness for some upcoming conflict.

Callum feeling really hungry over not eating grubs and then still deciding he'd rather be hungry. It makes me wonder all over again how Lujanne got to the point where she eats grubs, considering that other Moonshadow elves we know of back in the Silvergrove don't. I still love my hc that the giant leech ate all of Lujanne's moonberry bushes and she's taking her revenge. Whatever's going on there, Callum is definitely not at that point yet.

When Lujanne asks Callum how he knows she's real, he thinks to himself that he'd put up with just about anything from someone who was going to teach him magic. That's a great parallel and foreshadowing for Viren's student/master relationship with Aaravos! And it's telling that neither student gets exactly what they hoped to get. Lujanne doesn't actively teach Callum any spells, because she believes he can't learn Moon magic at all. Aaravos does offer Viren power, but it takes him to some very dark places - literally and figuratively - and the cost is terribly high.

Callum sees a moon shape among the ruins, and Lujanne explains that the Moonhenge layout is an intricate rune that uses the structures themselves as part of its symbols and power. That's apparently a thing even with ordinary Moonshadow villages like Hollow Wood in the east, which is the coolest idea I've seen in a while: city planning as magic runes!

Yes, that's the same shape as the pendants Ethari made for himself and Runaan. Protection? Home? Feelsiness? A sense of safety and belongnig for all cycles and seasons?

Wonder what this Moonhenge rune stands for, then, and how much of this landscape is included in that rune. I bet it's more than we think!

But it makes sense now, how toppling the stone pillars would disable the spell the druids would cast to connect with the Moon Nexus lake. Breaking the infrastructure of the Moonhenge breaks the rune.

There's a physical sensation involved with the visuals that Historia Viventem brings up! When that one ghostly druid walked through Callum, he felt icy cold. Like in ghost stories. I really wonder about what exactly Historia Viventem is doing when it activates. It shows truth, "what really happened here?", so it must have some kind of time-related element, maybe tied to how the moon always repeats the same cycles or something. But it also seems to draw on the spirits of any living people involved in the flashback, because Callum could physically feel that wispy shape passing through him. So very interesting!

Orrr... is that all wrong, and there's something else at work with this spell than time? Maybe the world beyond life and death can act as an imprint of the things that have happened in the living world, and the spell that Lujanne (and later Callum) casts taps into that place, with perfect recall. I'm looking really hard at the sentence that says "dozens of translucent elf ghosts" and "phantom Moonhenge" and "lost in their own world" here.

Lujanne says more here than in the show about the world beyond life and death, being her mysterious Moonshadow-mage self. She says that "beyond" and "between" might both apply to where this other plane of existence is, and she doesn't much care which. With all the relativity swirling around this place, and not much in the way of empiricism, it's sounding like perhaps multiple conflicting ideas might actually coexist in such a place, allowing more ideas to fit there than we might normally believe is possible. Which is a fascinating bit of worldbuilding. Basically, every headcanon anyone has ever had about the Moon Nexus could all be true at the same time, for all we know.

Oh oh oh, Callum coming in soft with a secret wish! He takes one look at the Moonhenge and immediately thinks of finding a way to see his mom again! Poor boy, my heart! I'd say that could be another interesting parallel with Viren, but then, who wouldn't hold that sentiment?

Oh my, is this another breath of life into Ye Olde Ley Lines headcanon? Lujanne mentioning the Nexuses again, so soon after talking about the runic design of the entire Moonhenge, makes me wonder if the six nexuses are in fact giant runes. On Earth, the places where ley lines cross are called nexuses, and there are those who believe those points got marked with ancient structures, like Stonehenge and many many others. If Xadia were crossed with magical lines which naturally formed nexus points where they met, and if powerful magical runes were built across those entire areas, well. That would be cool beans, fams. Can I smack a map of Xadia and release a spell like Luz Noceda does? Because ngl that is my first instinct here.

Lujanne has got to be missing some grandkids to spoil, right? The way she's always whipping out cake and ice cream for Callum, and she's so grandma-ish about it. Headcanon about her being Runaan's mom aside, she is canonically lonely and she's very sweet to Allen and Ellis and I think she's missing whatever family she once had in the past. She may never get to have that family back, so she's finding a new one among the humans who live nearby, and I think that's sweet. Found family isn't just for the young.

But Ellis is straight up gonna be her fave, I bet, because she didn't turn up her nose at Lujanne's illusion food!

Ezran and Bait have a lot more to their relationship than was visible in the show, and I'm so excited by it! Ez can tell by looking at Bait's colors that he's not truly jealous of Zym, even if he's really grumpy about the dragonling taking up his favorite human's time.

And Ez thinking a lot about his dad and the things he's taught him. They're soft leadership material, and I love that so much! "Pick your battles" and the importance of encouragement. Ahh, my heart. Ezran, you're going to be such a good king.

But wait a second: both times that Bait gets extra grumpy in Zym's first training session, Ezran has just mentioned something about flying. Guys, I think Bait wishes he could fly, really badly. And that's his biggest problem with Zym, and with Ezran teaching Zym to fly, instead of Bait who doesn't have wings so. Bait is so old that his secrets have secrets, and I'm really curious how flying fits into them now!

Rayla, Dramatic Assassin: "I need to patrol for dark forces." That's what Lujanne called the source of the purple wisps that found them. I wonder if that's an official term all Moonshadows know, or if Rayla is just taking her cue from a veteran Moon mage. And I wonder how far Rayla is falling into the apparent pattern of "one mage, one assassin", since she does spend a lot of her time patrolling without being asked.

When Callum tells Lujanne that he was bad at prince stuff, and she asks if he didn't give up and got good at those things anyway, it's an opportunity for Callum to embrace subverting his parents' expectations in favor of seeking his own path, which is a primary theme of the show. But Lujanne is a couple generations older than Callum, at the very least, and I have to wonder what her upbringing was like. Is her version of success the one she took? Was she bad at magic once too, but she persisted? She is very soft and doesn't want to kill anyone.

Maybe Lujanne had dreams of doing something else with her life, but she felt she had to pursue the destiny that others handed to her, so she studied magic as hard as she could, and she did get good at it, but using it to defend Xadia from humans is not what she wanted to do with her life. Whether there's a parallel between her and Ethari on that point, there's one between Callum and Ethari, I think. How much of your life are you willing to let others direct for you?

This is my new favorite Soren and Claudia moment ever. Soren loves him his bread, okay. Even as earplugs for Claudia's sleep ocarina tune. The fact that it's "super effective" makes me think of a Pokemon defense. The fact that he learned it at camp, where he also learned about Moonshadow Madness, is hilarious. Later on, Corvus doesn't know Soren by name, but I still love the idea of Corvus being a kind of Strider-esque camp instructor, filling the ears of his young charges with all kinds of useful tactics like ear bread for magic spell songs (which actually seemed to work as intended), and warnings about the enemy elves' blood-themed tactics (which may or may not come back around in BH)

I thought they were gonna go in a kind of deep direction when Soren still wanted his ear bread back, but then he just. Eats them. Just noms them. I love this kid. Give Soren all the bread!

nearly everyone on the server is affected by the weird shit that goes on, which is both based in my own ideas and the fact that people change their skins on red life lol. i don’t have super detailed ideas for a few of them— notably, being impulse, big b, etho, and joel! they just seem like they’d be funnier as humans.

bdubs: bdubs HIMSELF doesn’t change so much as his jacket. his moss jacket has my entire heart. it is alive now. he’s like a tangela. it moves on its own and it PUFFS bro. it’s like a parka

cleo: i’ve had the headcanon that as cleo dies she becomes more human instead of decaying further literally since day two of third life and i’m putting it in here. cleo is a patchwork of human and decay by the end of third life and it carries over to last life. it’s both hilarious and slightly angsty which is exactly how i like it

tango: tango’s just on fucking fire. he’s a flame spirit! a few of the people on the server are spirits in the world and tango’s one of them. obviously as he progresses we get more lava monster-y. like te kā from moana (i don’t think i used the accent marks right) but slightly more human-looking!

ren: yeah. wolf monster boy. you know the drill :^)! hes fluffy

martyn: martyn is actually a moon spirit even before everything, though the server brings out more of his inhuman traits. his design is based on dragons! he develops iridescent white scales, slit pupils, fangs, and horns, though one is torn off while he’s fighting grian in the battle of the red desert. i think he’s very cool

skizz: skizz is the most canon of the bunch: enderman void dude! he only changes once, on his red life in third life, but it sticks well. his arms are converted to void material, which means he can change their shape, and he can also dematerialize them in battle, though he has to be careful with that because it will also make him drop whatever he’s holding. his eyes are purely black except for red pinpricks of light signifying his life color.

scott: like martyn, scott is a spirit— a wind spirit, to be more exact! i actually don’t know how he changes exactly yet but! i do think his little crystalline headband thingy has something to do with it. think it might be fun if he sort of? cracked apart? in a similar way to how jimmy’s red life skin was dissolving. not sure yet! i do want him to take on more of a starborne look while he serves pearl. because obviously.

jimmy: speaking of jimmy dissolving. again, i’m not too sure what traits he develops, but that red life suspended state definitely carries over.

scar: SCAR IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. i took crack, listened to gold by imagine dragons one too many times, and went damn. guess i have a new hc. scar is literally an automaton. don’t ask me HOW or WHY. he just IS. his red body is decaying, you can see his ribs, and inside is a golden ribcage with a ticking, mechanical heartbeat. he bleeds solid gold. he’s really fun to draw!!!

pearl: pearl is similar to martyn, only i think i’m gonna go more unicorn-inspired as she dies more! i think unicorns are neat and i think she deserves this. she hasn’t reached the point of change yet (remember, grian’s the only one who will just change randomly), but she will eventually, so! i’m putting her on this list

lizzie: reconciling her axolotl skin with her clear fae tendencies will take me a bit more research, but considering she lives next to a river, i’m thinking this is kind of a naiad type thing. yes she is a fairy yes she is a river spirit. she was a river spirit even before this and so she kept her axolotl gills and a bit of her scales but Oh Boy living in a fairy circle is not going to help you when you lose lives and the server decides that you need to change, lizzie :^)

danny phantom season 2, ep 12-16 thoughts! these episodes, in comparison to the first 10 or so, felt way more laid back and low-stakes, which I appreciate sometimes. I didn't appreciate how lazy jack's halfa design was in masters of time, it made me so annoyed I redesigned it. 👎🏻 u_u

(which, fair assumption since they're considered 'ghost fanatics/nuts in canon...but...) why did she think jack or vlad would be her ONLY OPTIONS? be like your sister. be single. Actually, this au could’ve been really interesting if after the accident, vlad lied to her and said jack never wanted to see her again, but she stays single. Imagine how much that would bug vlad… like, in her mind, it was never a competition it was jack or no one type situation…

I saw your posts about Katara and the general treatment of female characters in the new ATLA fandom and what i wanna know is, why is it like this now? You know usually i'd say if there's misogyny in a fandom is because the show itself has big problems with it. But ATLA is like, the complete opposite of that? It's a very good show in terms of equality between female and male characters. And it was out there pushing that over a decade ago.

Like who's coming into this show full of great women and going "I only care about the boys and the girls are annoying"? Methinks these people are far too accustumed to shows and fandom where male characters and male focus are the norm, and they come into this show and start perpetuating the same, but this is to me at least almost entirily the fandom's fault. Cause the show isn't out there purposely ignoring or giving bad dialogue and arcs to the women in it. (2/2)

yeah, i agree. there's a very clear and longstanding male-centric bias in fandom in general, and atla is no exception, and yes, it really isn't well-supported by canon, which has plenty of well-developed female characters. atla fandom isn't the WORST i've been in, but the fandom focus has... shifted very male-centric nowadays in a way that wasn't always so prominent. while i'm not gonna say that it was a fantastic thing, before about 2015, there was a little bubble of more female-centric fanwork in the fandom -- mostly concerning azula, but other characters, too. (again, i don't think that it was a fantastic thing, given the fact that a lot of azula fanwork tends to ignore fundamental aspects of her, but it was there, and it existed.) now what? the fandom is predominantly z*ukka, with lingering remnants from a thriving z*utara fandom.

in general, i don't blame fandom for zuko being a fan-favorite -- he was practically designed that way. dramatic and attractive, with one of the most visible character arcs in the series. for other characters, you actually have to pay attention to see how they learn and change; for zuko, you don't have to pay much attention at all. but exempting him, the two most developed characters are aang and katara, both of whom get glossed over in fandom, particularly 2020 fandom. since katara is the main female, let's look at her.

why is she so disrespected in fandom? i think we can start by examining the largest pairings. the z*utara fandom goes all the way back to the airing of the show itself. it's a genuinely compelling dynamic and i like it, but the fandom repels me deeply... because katara is often forced into a position where she has to perform emotional labor in order to force zuko to redeem himself. her character often loses spark, and she sometimes becomes passive in way that's not canon. not to mention there's a whole subset of z*utara tropes that feels very... colonialist. and being a brown girl, fitting her into these more passive, colonized molds is... uh, not a good look on the fans. but i digress. at least she's there and present.

now flash forward to post-2015, but especially 2020, z*ukka fandom. (this fandom existed prior, but was much more lowkey.) the one thing about a lot of mlm pairings in practically every fandom, is how fans can choose to exclude the females of the narrative. this is in no way a disparagement of gay shipping -- but it is a criticism of how those same shippers behave to other characters. other characters, especially females, become accessories to their main ship, and because of that, they often become flat and unidimensional. furthermore, z*ukka had a rival ship in z*utara, so establishing a sense of superiority comes down to proving that sokka is somehow better than katara in some form or another. and how? she's homophobic, she's whiny, she's a "mom", she's "straight" (???) ... or maybe they call her badass and assign her no other traits. maybe they even pair her off with another person to get her out of the way, so they can focus on their mlm pairing, which they justify as more important because it's "progressive shipping". essentially, unlike z*utara, z*ukka stans can very conveniently throw katara out the window. she doesn't need to be present, and so often times, she isn't.

it's just all part of this continued shafting of brown girls in fandom. the fandom CONSISTENTLY loves to hate katara, specifically because she talks about her trauma so much. (which is justified as hell! she lost her mother and then became a mother to the rest of her village at a young age, and she uses this trauma to help her empathize with others!) zuko's out here monologuing about his trauma, and everyone loves him, but this same love doesn't extend to katara. it's irksome to say in the least. sokka, who's of the same race, gets a lot more attention, and that really says a lot about how gender plays into fan-following, because he isn't quite as developed as she is.

there are other girls in the fandom with notable followings, but honestly it would take forever going through each one of them step by step. azula is the most significant in fandom, and that's partially because her character development is strong and visible in the way that zuko's is. also, people have a tendency towards enjoying more unstable females, but that's its own thing. overall, though, even she has been long outstripped by the fan-following of the main mlm ship in fandom. there's no way to compete with that.

and really, that's all it is. this recent misogyny is very much a result of this almost cultish shift towards one particular ship in fandom, an mlm ship that very obviously allows for the exclusion of female characters. once you become a superfan and enwrapped in this type of cultish shipping, you no longer need canon, you no longer need the rest of the cast, and you no longer need female characters, and so you can just enter into a nice little echo chamber where you talk about the same two characters over and over again and get completely disconnected from the original material. and that sucks, because often times, it's the canon context and the complexity of other characters that provide complexity to these characters you're discussing, and now that you've disconnected, you've warped and flattened the dynamic of everyone including those favorite characters into something very generic and boring. and that's a travesty! but, well, i suppose it’s just another byproduct of misogyny.

Sorry if you've already forgotten since it's been several days,, I just wanted to tell you that I really appreciated your insights on the game and I found myself agreeing with you once it was finished and I could finally look through your tag! Unfortunately I got a bad taste in my mouth from a lot of stuff from Fantasia-onwards (I think I took it too seriously dfkgksd) but I did really enjoy the Persian having such a prominent role in it after all, and (1/2)

really I enjoyed a lot of the expanded roles for the secondary/minor characters, and I liked some of the ways they visualized stuff I didn't quite wrap my head around from the book. (also Erik's singing as the siren was gr8) I don't want to go on and on about it in your inbox (or, too late,,) but if you ever did post an in-depth review of the game I'd love to read it! ;w; thank you for your time (2/2)

Hi MaZm anon! Glad to hear from you again :D And don’t be sorry- I don’t mind at all! I’m all for rambling together about the mazm game, and there is a lot to ramble about LOL.

I’m glad you agreed with my thoughts on it :) Overall, it’s quite well-done but makes some choices (you get me, anon lol) that left us justifiably upset. I think it’s fair to take the game seriously because it tried to present itself seriously. And even claimed to be accurate to the book (LMAO game devs, we have eyes!). As an individual adaptation though, it’s fantastic!

The expansion of the secondary characters was my favorite part! Even the NPCs’ that just stood around were the best XD People who don’t usually get the spotlight like the managers, Mifroid, daroga, the ballerinas, etc. had great development and characterizations (well... in the managers’ case, I just thought they were hilarious). Just too bad they couldn’t extend that development to the people already developed in canon. And I also enjoyed the visuals! Though when I saw the “floating skull,” I went “sans undertale???”

Erik’s unmasked design was 10/10. Like, he was beautiful but also “ugly” and somehow they pulled it off LOL In my full review, I’ll argue that he probably looked too good, not that I’m complaining. Thanks for the message! I don’t know when I’ll make the review, but it’s definitely something I plan to do- thank you for the interest! 

I have so many positive thoughts on the pharoga vibes, Raoul, and that amazing takedown of Philippe lmao. Also have so many thoughts in the opposite direction with wtf they were trying to accomplish with Christine’s (and by default, Erik’s) character arc.

imo, the quality of the story dropped after they introduced Melek; I have a love/hate relationship with her because on one hand, she’s not a bad character in her own right. On the other, her only purpose is to make everyone else look bad (they end up looking irredeemable at worst, or hilariously uncaring at best). Like, isn’t it ?? that Christine saw Melek in the basement and still thought Erik had some goodness inside, she really went “rip to Melek but I’m different” adsfasdf Also gotta love how Raoul and the Persian met Melek too and just went “ok, but what about Christine?” GUH

It’s also ?? that Erik had no idea what he wanted from Christine at the scorpion/grasshopper scene. And they kept going back/forth in a convo that never happened in the book, which explains the awkwardness. Erik’s entire “arc” was a mess by the end and was sending some incredibly unhealthy messages about trauma and recovery. So like I said before, Raoul had to carry the entire ending ON HIS BACK because of these wtf choices.

But putting aside our fandom biases, it’s a fun game in its own right haha Thanks again for the messages!
