'Bugdom'
[MAC] [USA] [MAGAZINE] [1999]
"Brian Greenstone and his pals at Pangea Software have a tradition of making attractive games-Weekend Warrior; Nanosaur; and one of the (Macworld Game Hall of Fame)'s all-time favorites, Power Pete. Pangea's latest effort is, quite literally, cute as a bug, and as such couldn't have a more appropriate name-Bugdom. Bugdom's goal is simple. In the guise of Rollie McFly, a colorful roly-poly bug, you must help free the ladybugs captured by ne'er-do-well fire ants under the control of King Thorax. To do so, you rush around the ten levels of Bugdom (these include The Lawn, The Pond, and The Forest) kicking down the spiderweb cages that contain the fair ladybugs, all the while avoiding or attacking your insectoid-and in The Pond, your piscine-opponents. No one does RAVE hardware acceleration better than Pangea, and it there-fore comes as no surprise that Bugdom is lovely to look at. But the game does require some variety of ATI 3-D-accel-eration hardware. If your Mac lacks such hardware, you can get it by adding ATT's Rage Orion video card to your PCI-based Power Mac. Bugdom's action is frantic enough for hard-core arcade gamers, yet nonviolent enough for children. Best of all, it's available only on the Macintosh." ~Christopher Breen, MacWorld (December 1999, "1999 MacWorld Game Hall of Fame")'
Well, it ain't a Mac exclusive anymore, but it is open source and on Itch.io now!

Reading about the Tumblr layoffs last week and everyone madly backing up their blogs, I am wondering if it’s time to go back to an open source community platform like Dreamwidth. I have a very old blog there I haven’t used in a decade and always liked it; the only issue it ever had was low user numbers. But honestly, anything corporate owned is going down the tubes and has been for a while. Meta apps are dead to me because of AI and being owned by a fascist bigot, there was a good reason everyone made a mass exodus of LJ in the mid 2010s, and Discord is trying to go public, which is essentially the death knell for them remaining at all user-centric (things have already gotten worse lately as they prep).
Feels like it may be the time to start leaning heavily again into open-source and fandom-run communities that can’t be turned off or fucked up at the whim of some asshole CEO who wants to line their pockets with a few more dollars.
Plus, because of the internet’s rapid decline into corporate, capitalist suckage, I’ve found myself growing increasingly nostalgic about the olden days of the internet and online fandom (sites like Sugar Quill, WIKTT, Granger Enchanted, and old LJ). I may just act on that impulse.
(I’m on bluesky as well and it seems great but not as good of a platform for community building vs others imo.)
Is anyone else in HP fandom using dreamwidth still?

something interesting about the large amount of free and open source software surrounding microsoft's ecosystem (i'm talking about power apps, not like word), considering bill gates squashed the open source movement in its infancy.
Like you gotta pay for microsoft's software, but to use it efficiently you rely on an army of random nerds who have spent countless hours providing free tools to use to improve your experience.

I've made a simple and short precision platformer where you have to paint your way back to the top. 🦑🎨
You can play it on itch.io in your browser.
The game was made in a couple of so-called Mi'pu'mi days. At Mi'pu'mi on the first Friday every month we are encouraged to use this day to learn new things on our own, stay up-to-date with latest technology or collaborate with others on our own game ideas. On one of those days I decided to do a little game-jam. 🍓
The theme was randomly sampled from Christiaan Janssen's theme generator and turned out to be "Inferno".
Once again I was inspired by Dante Alighieri's Comedia and thought about being one of those unfortunate souls thrown down into hell, trying to get out of it again. The paint mechanic came from the urge to focus more on aesthetics this time and to highlight the difficult path of the player back to the top. It then evolved into sticky walls, which could easily be arranged and modified into many different twists.

After that I also planned to introduce spikes to avoid and coins to collect. I did not finish the spikes as I did not want to restrict the freedom of the player to move around as they like. When the player touched the spikes, the paint would have worked as a rewind mechanic. This is not in the game anymore, but the paint is still used later as a meaningful gameplay element.
Collectibles would have also made a lot of sense as secondary goal and for some kind of scoring system, but again placing them meaningfully would have introduced recommended paths or possible backtracking and I wanted the player to get to the top as freely as possible.
Originally the player should look like an ink blob, but it felt much easier to control and navigate with a silhouette which (literally) highlights the current direction.

The game was made with a custom open-source game engine and the art-style was a bit inspired by Busted Bayou from Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. 🐵
The music is by Tim Beek and arranged in multiple layers. The farther you go up, the more detailed and intense the music becomes. The sound effects are by Jason Steele and I think they sound like punching or slapping someone with a fish. 🐟
Splat textures are by Kenney and the font is by MJType.
As usual the source code is available on GitHub and GitLab.
Have fun!

DevRel in the era of "Community Everywhere"
Last week, I had the pleasure of talking to the Dublin #DevRel Meetup, organised by my friends at Voxgig – all about Developer Relations in the era of “Community Everywhere”. I covered a range of the current and emerging social platforms where we can connect with our communities, and later in the session I talked more specifically about what’s new in Mastodon 4.2. What is “Community Everywhere”?…

I've been thinking. I'm on tumblr way too much and want to make better use of my time but I do want to look at art and fandom stuff and queer discussions and things like that when I have time to kill. And unfortunately I really can't think of a better alternative than tumblr for all that.
I downloaded a rss feed reader but I don't have enough ideas of what to put in there and it feels more like something made to not miss an update or article rather than to have something to look at to kill time. It's technically not a bad thing since the goal is also to look at my phone less, and I could also kill time by reading random Wikipedia articles for exemple. But I think I'd still miss out on fandom. A forum like in the old days could be a good replacement but the downside is that it'd be fandom specific and I switch fandoms often.
Tumblr tagging system and the ability to add on posts with reblogs are just so good for community! I can't think of anything else having something like that.
The thing I'd add would be more customization of the dashboard. I saw some people suggest the creation of tabs with only posts with a specific tag from people I follow.
That'd be perfect for me to focus on what I really want to see and not just scroll for scrolling! Unfortunately that's exactly the kind of thing that social media has no interest in adding since it might go toward less time on the app. Unless they paywall it.
Still, I'd rather find an open source website so that there's no fear of losing it someday because some stockholders finally decided the site loses too much money.
#tumblr#hm. thinking about that a lot lately#is there no open source social media project that is more like tumblr and not a twitter or facebook copycat?#and is actually likely to kick off and have enough users I mean#I guess that's the hard part with independant social platforms. since it's social it's only interesting if enoughpeople actually join

Node package Manager
Native to nodejs installation is npm itself. Its is very robust and get's the job done. But there is a better option. I would not say limitations of native npm is overcome by pnpm and its predecessor yarn. There are added features to npm and not necessarily limitations. I was using yarn until last month when I run into a codebase the was configured with pnpm. I have since used it for any project I have developed. To install pnpm you can visit their documentation, my prefered way is to use powershell or chocolately. Now chocolately or choco is an option when installing nodejs, if you did not install it then use the powershell command.
Visit pnpm and install using your preferred method.
Powershell command - Invoke-WebRequest https://get.pnpm.io/install.ps1 -UseBasicParsing | Invoke-Expression
Chocolately command - choco install pnpm
If you have to install a package manager then get chocolately or sccop. These will allow you to run an upgrade command when there is an update

The Power of Open Source: A Community Beyond Code
In today’s digital age, the open source community is shaping more than just software—it’s shaping the future. What started as a way to share code freely has evolved into a global movement rooted in collaboration, transparency, and shared purpose. At its core, open source is about breaking down barriers and building bridges between people, ideas, and innovation.
Open source projects are developed openly, allowing anyone to access, contribute to, and improve them. This approach brings together diverse minds—developers, designers, writers, and enthusiasts—from around the world. Everyone, regardless of background or experience, has the opportunity to make an impact.
One of the most powerful aspects of this community is the culture of learning and mentorship it fosters. New contributors are often supported by seasoned experts, creating a welcoming space for growth and development. This inclusive environment empowers individuals to expand their skills, build their portfolios, and often launch careers in tech.
Many open source initiatives also focus on solving real-world challenges—improving education, healthcare, accessibility, and more. They serve as living proof that when people unite around a common goal, they can achieve meaningful change.
The open source community is more than a network of coders—it's a movement committed to building a better future. By working together and sharing knowledge freely, this global ecosystem is creating tools, technologies, and opportunities that benefit everyone.
