As a species, we have substantially solved a ton of pollution sources. Even in extremely polluted countries, environmental problems are better than they used to be in the west before significant environmental protections kicked in. Beijing is still 3x more air-polluted than LA, but that's falling fast and is better than LA in 1990, let alone during the "rivers would catch fire" era. We're making a major dent on plastic pollution, and cleaning up the pacific garbage patch is essentially a problem of "okay we're going to devote resources to this" more than anything else. We've brought down sulfur particulates in the Pacific so much that it's actually accelerated global warming! We stopped the depletion of the ozone layer and it's recovering. We don't pump out methylated lead into the atmosphere from every single car. Waters, oceans, and rivers are cleaner, forests are coming back, endangered species are recovering.

Basically, on every element except for CO2 pollution (and associated global warming), we've solved or majorly reduced most types of pollution. And even that is slowing faster than we thought due to build-out of green energy like solar and wind.

Basically, it's looking like we can in fact tech and build our way out of this problem. Would have been ideal to have not abandoned nuclear power back in the 1970s or to have stalled solar, wind, and solar power yesterday. But the next best time is today.

oddly specific things that have brought me joy today

a video of myself dancing with my friends in a dimly lit club. the person filming sang along until they had a voice crack

a mashups of the song "peggy" by ceechyna with the song "club classics" by charli xcx, really good biking music

the fact that there is a barber across the street from my apartment! it is very convenient and i get to practice my spanish with the old man who sits and talks with his son (who owns the place. my mom was in town, so she came with me to see my haircut and the old man kept reassuring her that when i went to school on monday i would have many girlfriends.

one of my duolingo sentences was "por qué quieren destruir la luna." this means, why do they want to destroy the moon. this reminded me of the minions, which made me very happy. the minions are some of my comfort characters and i rewatch the movies often.

today i listened to some soca and dancehall music at the gym and it was really energetic! lots of instrumental usage that blended well together, i definitely want to hear more of it.

i took a nap and woke feeling very well rested. like a butterfly out of a cocoon but the cocoon is a warm blanket and an abundance of stuffed animals.

People throwing around the term 'toxic positivity' to any instance of baseless positivity while in harrowing situation / state piss me offfffffff.

Like my bad I have I outlook that helps me keep loving the world. Someone else's outlook might not work for you, but that doesn't mean they're doing it 'wrong'

I think most people give way too much lee-way to negativity because they see negativity as more 'real' than positivity. They usually offer some kind of passive acceptance that's really just lazy optimisim, which I have no problem with, but when people dial up that mindset to a more active optimisim, now it's toxic positivity. So lame.

A complex reason for hope I have is the wonder that is pencils. Yes, pencils. Consider all what they are:

Tools people have made to create amazing things like art or design buildings.

When art, shows potentials or possibilities.

When design, shows cooperation and power of it.

Capable of creation and erasing symbolizing forgiveness for mistakes and capacity for change. Not all have erasers but erasers can still work.

Generally widespread and easy to obtain. Showing people value it and what it can do.

And if there was a pencil named Sam...

Many would have empathy for it just because I gave it a name. Showing instincts for social care are widespread.
