RW Headcanon: The Omnivores and the Carnivores

Figured I'd start sharing some headcanons! Buckle up, folks, this is gonna be a looooooooong post! With a bit of Artimand sprinkled in (hope you like it @melissa-titanium)!

This was based on an idea lingering in the back of my mind for a bit, but after drawing the above image from a previous post I got reminded of it and decided to develop it a little more! I'll put the full headcanon down below!

By the way, I should warn you that the verbosity habit in my post asking about headcanons was no joke. This headcanon, as I've explained it below, is literally almost 700 words...

I headcanon that there are two subspecies of “wild type” slugcats — omnivores and carnivores. I like the idea that slugcats were descended from a pipe-cleaning organism (although I still see them as mustelids rather than mollusks, but that’s a headcanon for another day…), so in this headcanon, a carnivorous variant of the slugcat ancestor was made to be more specialized for killing pests. Back when the Ancients were still around, they had a reputation similar to that of real-life raccoons and pigeons, while the omnivorous slugcats were more-often kept as pets.

As of the present Rain World timeline, though, omnivorous and carnivorous slugcats look almost identical. Omnivorous slugcats are still more iconic — they’re what you’d think of when one says “slugcat” — but the biggest differences the carnivorous variant possesses are their sharper teeth, stronger jaws, and sharper claws. Carnivorous slugcats also tend to be more muscular, while omnivorous slugcats have more body fat due to their largely plant-based diet.

Culturally, though, the two subspecies show more contrast. Omnivores are more peaceful hunter-gatherers who focus on trying to passively get by in a bigger, more dangerous world. Carnivores, on the other hand, are active hunters who tend to encourage combat training more and pride themselves on rising up to the ferocity of larger predators. The two tend to live separately in their own colonies, and don’t interact too often. There’s also some degree of prejudice in each group towards the other due to these cultural differences; not enough to cause large-scale conflicts, but enough that they side-eye each other occasionally. In more extreme cases, omnivores are perceived by the carnivores as weak, lazy, and meek, while omnivores see the carnivores as aggressive, loud, and cynical.

To bring it back to the image above, in my own personal fic-idea concept thing of how Artificer and Gourmand get together, this prejudice is a minor, but additional reason why they never expect to fall in love with each other; Arti is descended from a small group of carnivorous slugcats modified with explosive spit, while Gourm and the rest of the slugcats in his colony are all natural omnivores. Combine that with the rest of their attitudes in life, and at first, it seems they’re just too different to ever make a good pair.

A few more quick thoughts about these two subspecies:

Survivor and Monk are both naturally omnivorous. Hunter and Spearmaster, while directly engineered, were both derived from the carnivorous subspecies, while Rivulet was derived from the omnivorous subspecies.

Despite Gourmand being a natural omnivore, he eats larger prey more often than any other slugcat in his colony both out of curiosity for how other meats taste and because, true to his name, he honestly just likes to eat whatever (hey, as long as it’s edible)! However, once he and Artificer get together, he really starts to eat more meat from the creatures he hunts for her. And, interestingly enough, because he likes to use fruits and other plants as side dishes or as toppings to add flavor, this causes Arti to start eating more plants (now that’s what I call a “balanced diet”)! 

Even though the carnivores are culturally more similar to scavengers, the omnivores tend to get along better with them due to their more peaceful attitude, and the fact they naturally compete less with the scavengers for food (I like to imagine scavengers as pack-hunting carnivores).

Carnivores tend to move slightly faster than omnivores.

Carnivores often have bigger, more ravenous appetites than omnivores because they require more energy on average. Again, it’s partly what the image above is referencing!

Back when the Ancients lived, there actually existed a bit of a friendly discourse around which variant of the slugcat ancestors made better pets. It was in a similar vein to the modern “cat person vs. dog person” idea, but, to some degree, it’s actually continued on in various iterator groups, including the main one! FP, NSH, SRS, and CW are firm believers in carnivore superiority, UI passionately cheers on the omnivores, and Moon just giggles in the background and makes sure the debates don’t get too heated (but is also secretly team omnivore).

Anyway, with that said, BIG thanks to anyone who made it all the way down here! This headcanon originally formed as a way to explain in-universe the noticeably different diets of the main slugcat characters, but I just couldn't help adding more to it!

LORD alfuckingmighty i don't think there is a single string of words i could piece 2gether to properly describe the absolute magnificence of ur art . you have such a vast understanding of art & so many of its intricacies. ur character designs are ALWAYS incredible, so so endearing & memorable. every time i see one i get incredibly excited & am strangled by the urge to make fanart because just. oh my god. you have some of the BEST color work i have ever fucking seen like it is genuinely fucking spectacular what you are able to create & look good with combinations of colors i would NOT think to place in the way you do if i were given the same palette. i feel like calling your doodles just "doodles" is like, WRONG, because every single one is something u could spend ages looking at on its own. i'd pick favorites to describe but we would be here for hours . you have the insane ability to keep your style consistent but are able to stretch it & change it for whatevers appropriate/the receive your desired result for the particular drawing and its just SO. I was bored out of my mind all day last Saturday, so I decided to catch up on some drawing. And what better way to add some excitement to my Saturday by putting the "spicy" in Spicybun?

Although, now that I think about it, what exactly is Artificer planning? Who knows... but whatever it is, it'll definitely be exciting—!

I got pretty carried away with the iterator stuff as of recently, but since I haven't drawn them in a while I thought it was time to return to some classic Spicybun, especially with Valentine's Day coming up! Hopefully I can make some more drawings with them, as well as my other ships, in celebration!

what are your top favoritest movies you've watched for the first time this year (whether they were released this year or you're catching them late)?

This is tough because my memory is shot right now but I WILL TRY!!!

Joy Ride--extremely fun but also extremely emotional (I cried) and I'm soooorrryyyy but but while the sex scenes were all very funny, the scene where the one basketball player was going down on intrepid heroine Ashley Park after whispering shit in her ear in Hindi and then it pans to the other basketball player leaning against the wall and translating for him like "he wants to make you come so hard" or whatever??? One of the standout moments in cinema of the past decade let's talk about it

Sanctuary--one of the best romantic comedies ever maybe, a total delight, the performances were amazing, the love story made total sense despite it basically being a bottle episode of a movie; I loved the humor and the depiction of their D/s dynamic was SO GOOD, which is so hard to find onscreen especially. Margaret Qualley is kind of a nepo baby queen I fear; the scene in the beginning where she delivers the dialogue he asked accurately, but you know from seeing his "script" that he'd instructed her to say it in a mean way and she says it in this open, vulnerable way? And it's your first indicator that she's fallen in love for real???? DUDE. CINEMA.

The Little Mermaid--such a pleasant surprise, and this is why you give shit a chance; I really expected to hate this but I loved it. I have some minor quibbles, but the movie is great, Halle is AMAZING in it, Melissa is fabulous, Jonah was a shockingly good Prince Eric. Was stunned by the emphasis on the love story, tbh, and the way Ariel and Eric play out is a testament to the importance of good chemistry.

Nimona--ugh, got my whole heart. I watched this the first time with my pink-haired, trans NB sibling and it was such a special experience. On top of the allegories in the story, it's also just an amazing found family movie, and I adore the conflict in Ambrosius and his bitter exes energy with Ballister and how EXPLICITLY CANON it all is. Also, really loved the animation style too.

M3gan--never has my mom been so excited to see a movie, but I actually ended up loving it because you know what we need in this day and age?? More absurdist, over the top, high camp cinema. That's all I want. The Titanium moment remains MAGIC to me.

We plan to replicate this car and my husband says he thinks we should make the regular model more like a car then if I car and people agree with that and one idea of the everman car is to make fly cars available and it's like a medium level fly car and we're going to produce it and it looks similar to this a little smaller and less powerful accents as well as the full-blown Batman car would have less powerful accents they look very similar except the regular model would open from doors but the fly cars would open the top even the regular model fly car would open to the top and the speeds of the regular fly car would be 5,000 to 8,000 mph you don't have to go that fast as our new safety features and the top speed of the Batman car will be out 25,000 miles per and the regular Batman car the regular model would be about the same speed as the other Batman car a little bit faster because of the design top speed would be out 650 for the base model but these are serious cars and they're superhero cars keep that in mind and you can modify the regular car to be a fly car after the after you buy it by having a certified mechanic install all the items and modify the body comes in a kit. The base price for the base model Batman car would be about $10,000 but that's bare Bones nothing in it practically except the motor the vehicle runs it's DOT approved as it is fully assembled and you can drive it right off the lot and tear down the road at 600 miles an hour plus if you really want to and the Batman we talked to does not want to have that particular model on his lot. The Batman who drove that vehicle co-star was Kim basinger and my husband likes her look and which is good cuz I look like here, but they're not gigantic and the more like Melissa not like Jen her lips are not big big lips like Robin good friend that's right like a woman's lips and I was thrilled with her character and he was but he wasn't that big at that time. It's a little taken aback and we have some work to do yeah not much he'll be fine he knows it's fine it's trapped so having a good time but this car is going to rock it's close to the shape of my husband's mega car but that car is a high-end expensive vehicle and the top end car the fly car version is now for sale is a turbine it's a twin turbine and it goes for about other other cars I could go for a 4 million and his is about 3.5 million and people want to buy it and the street version which goes about 3,000 mph but has a limiter goes for about and comparable vehicles go for about 1.2 million so he's selling it for about 900,000. And there's a regular version which goes about 6:50 and that sells for about $350,000 or 325,000 really and he's making a small one and it's like the lotus spree when he was younger and he's real pleased with it it still goes about 500 miles an hour and he's going to sell it for a lot less and the lotus back in the day but these days they sell for more but he's not going to ask for that much more and you might not ask for more at all these days cars that go that fast can sell for as cheap as 25 Grand but really they're not mass produced this is mass produced and he thinks maybe he'll sell it for about $75,000 and the gang approves and it's a very very high tech car it's made out of titanium alloy it can be easily modified into a fly car it's extremely fast if you take the limiter off it was about 850 mph it's smaller and compact and if it's two with a teeny compartment for stuff very fast it's a mid-engine vehicle and it looks like this and with the same people who design this particular Batman car is he and I and it's the same company as the mega sports car which is now all titanium the whole line is titanium alloy and the top of the line version of this Batman car and the other is the titanium alloy because of speed is 25,000 miles per hour as a fly car

All I Have Left (Steve Rogers x Reader)

Summary: In which you struggle to cope two years after the snap.  

Warnings: Post-Infinity War/Snap, this wasn’t the original idea I was going for but I changed it on a whim oops, mentions of depression & survivor’s guilt, Prosopagnosia (face blindness)

No idea why I wrote this wtf.

No one could’ve imagined Thanos being this unstoppable.

His gauntlet glowed with the power of the five Infinity Stones. Your mission was to stop him from getting to Vision – from taking the final stone and destroying life as you know it.

But one by one, your friends were defeated. You were thrown out of his way, landing into the dirt with a thud – your head smacking against a rock, rendering you unconscious. Steve had been able to catch his gloved hand only to meet the Titan’s free fist. Wanda had been successful at destroying the Mind Stone and her lover with it, but with the Time Stone, Thanos was able to bring Vision back and steal the stone, ripping it from the android’s skull.

When hope was lost, it was Thor who came out the skies, lodging his axe into Thanos’s chest. He taunted Thanos, who took the life of his brother just when they were finally getting along. But in Thor’s blind vengeance, he didn’t account for Thanos to say, “you should’ve gone for the head,” and snap.

Your friends started to disappear. Bucky, T’Challa, Groot, Wanda, then Sam along with half the universe. They all disintegrated and left dust in their wake.

In your blurry haze due to the head injury, you stood up on wobbly legs. “Steve?” You called out for your husband. Your vision was unfocused. “Steve!”

He was in front of you immediately. Your hands grasped his tightly, afraid he’d disappear, too. His hold on you was just as tight with the same fear. “I’m here,” Steve muttered. “I’m here.” The both of you crashed down to the floor next to Vision’s colorless, lifeless body. “Oh, god.”

That was two years ago and you hated to admit, but life moved on.

You initially planned to stick by Natasha’s side. She had opted to stay at the compound and be the head of operations for the heroes that stationed themselves in various areas of the galaxy. But you couldn’t do it. You didn’t think you deserved to be on the Avengers – or what was left of it – after losing a battle that killed trillions.

So, you and Steve opted for the quiet life in the city. He led a support group while you volunteered your time in foodbanks and shelters. You were both lucky to still have each other. You had the luxury of coming home to someone who loved you.

But you were plagued by the memories. In your dreams, you could still hear Wanda’s laugh or Sam and Bucky bicker. However, because of the traumatic head injury you endured while fighting Thanos, you couldn’t picture their faces. You couldn’t remember what they looked like.

In the shelter you volunteered in, a new face appeared. A young boy was brought in. He must’ve been 4 or 5. Any time a volunteer came up to talk to him, his arm would tighten around the teddy bear in his hands and refuse to talk. One of the volunteers, Melissa, came up to you and asked for your help.

“Hi there, pal,” you smiled at him as you crouched down to his height. “What’s your name?” He didn’t respond. He refused to return your gaze, keeping his eyes on his feet as he picked at the fur of his teddy. “My name is (Y/N) Rogers.”

“Like Steve Rogers?” He muttered. “Like… Captain America?”

“Yeah,” you nodded.

“Are you related?” He frowned, still looking at his shoes.

“Oh, no… he’s my husband,” you laughed a little and flashed the ring on your finger.

“Wow!” He said, finally looking at you. His voice rose an octave in excitement. “I love Captain America! He’s my favorite Avenger!”

“Really? He’s mine, too!” You beamed. “What’s this guy’s name?” You asked, gesturing to the bear in his hands.

“His name is Bucky like Captain America’s best friend… he’s my best friend, too.” Your chest tightened at his name. The blurry faced image of your husband’s best friend raced through your mind. The only thing you could clearly make out was the titanium arm.

“What’s your name, then, buddy?” You managed to say.

“Daniel.” He said. “Named after my dad.”

“That’s a lovely name, Daniel… Where’s your daddy, now?” The excitement in his eyes slowly faded with his smile as your face fell in realization. “Oh…” You whispered with a frown and slowly nodded, regretting that you asked. Tears pricked in your eyes, but you couldn’t cry. Not in front of the child who lost his father. “Well, sweetheart, let’s get some food in ya.”

When Steve came home that night, he found you in the living room with various photo albums scattered around you. He bit his lip as he approached you, knowing exactly what you were doing.

“Hon?” he said, softly, taking a seat on the floor with you. The heavy aroma of his cologne filled the room the closer he got to you and you looked up at him, recognizing the scent, knowing it was Steve, the one face you recognized the most.

“I hate this,” you whimpered. You were helpless as you stared at the photos.

“It’s not your fault,” Steve said.

“That’s you,” you pointed. “Tony. Nat. Rhodey. Pepper.” You stopped. Steve tilted his head to look at the face you were desperately trying to remember.

“Sam.” He answered for you.

“I can’t even remember my friends.” You frowned, closing the album and tossing it aside.

“It’s not your fault.” He repeated. He looked over your face. There was a faint scar from your injury two years ago. It had healed, but you didn’t. “Hon…”

“Why did we survive?” You frowned. “Why did this bastard think the world would allow their loved ones to disappear?” Your face contorted to show your disgust – your hatred – for the titan you could no longer picture.

“We’re still standing.” Steve muttered. “We owe it to those we lost to keep living – to move on.”

“I’m not one of the people in your support group, Steve.” You snapped. “I know better than anyone else that you don’t believe the words you preach.” He took a deep breath and decided to remain silent. You were angry. You were hurt. You were lashing out. He knew you weren’t angry at him. You were angry at the situation. It was understandable. “I met a boy who lost his father today and I swear… I swear if I could take my life just to bring back someone’s parent, I would… I really would.”

“Don’t say that.”

“It’s the truth.”

“This happened for a reason.”

You scoffed. “You don’t believe that, do you?” He just stared at you. “So, you don’t think about our friends who died? So, you don’t wake up in the middle night because you dreamt of when Bucky got dusted right in front of you?”

No… Steve thought. I dream that it’s my wife that disappears and that terrifies me.

“I meant that … I meant that there’s a reason that we both didn’t get dusted – like how Tony and Pepper didn’t disappear, either.”

“That doesn’t change the fact that kids in the world – and throughout the universe – lost their parents. People lost the love of their life… And those who are left behind remember who they lost. I can’t. I can’t remember if what Wanda looked like. I can’t remember what Sam’s smile looks like or if Bucky had blue or green, or were they mixed. So, yeah, if I could, die to bring back one person to bring comfort for someone who needs it.”

“Then what about me?” Steve asked. His tone dropped as he became frustrated. “I’m nobody, right? Just your husband of five years. It’s not like I get comfort from waking up next to my wife. Not like I’m not comforted from the idea that I was lucky enough to have her wake up next to me.”

You sighed. He was right. You were lucky. You both were.

“I can’t bring back the memories. I can’t bring back the faces. I’m sorry. If I could, I’d share my brain with you so that you could remember, but I can’t and I’m sorry.” Steve voice broke. He put up a good front in front of the men and women in his group – in front of Natasha who was barely hanging onto hope. But he was just as broken and helpless, too. “But please don’t say that you’d happily die and leave me to help someone else. I’m sorry if that’s selfish, but I can’t lose you. I love you too much.”

“I’m sorry for saying that,” you whispered. You shuffled over and laid yourself on his lap. His arms wrapped around your waist. “I shouldn’t have said it. I’m sorry.”

Steve buried his face into your hair, pulling you closer to him as if he were afraid that a second wave would hit and you’d disappear in seconds. “I can’t lose you, too, (Y/N). You’re all I have left.”
