In Defense of Indra and Asura

I feel like these two characters alongside Kaguya are easily the most contentious part of Naruto with a lot of fans saying that their introduction into the story outright ruined it for them. I can't really agree, I think they're such good additions to the lore and fit so well into the theming of the manga.

Starting out with the biggest problem most people seem to have is that it turns Naruto into a "chosen one" and seemingly goes against the series' stance on fate from earlier on in the series. I have a couple of things to say about this. The first is that Naruto and Sasuke inherit surprisingly little from their previous incarnations. it's a matter of will and talent. Naruto is intrinsically drawn to camaraderie and fails at anything he tries to shoulder on his own while Sasuke is intrinsically drawn to solitude while having a natural aptitude for the art of ninjutsu. These things affected their personalities, but Asura and Indra don't directly control either. This can be seen in Hashirama and Madara, the previous incarnations. They are similar to Naruto and Sasuke, but only because of these shared wills and talents. Otherwise, they're their own people. Naruto likens it to being haunted for a reason. An incarnate is still their own person, but with the ideals of the brothers constantly looming over them. When you begin talking about "Chosen Ones" and "Fate" it becomes interesting because as the chosen inheritor of Asura's chakra, Naruto is only chosen to do one thing - Fight Indra's reincarnate and either kill him or get killed by him. That is the way that the lives of Hashirama and Madara played out and presumably how every other incarnate pair has played out. Naruto's stance on fate is pretty interesting because in it's world, fate IS a real thing. There are certain actions that are simply fated to happen. However, fate can be fought, it isn't a hard rule. Someone like Rock Lee who has no aptitude for Ninjutsu is fated to never become a ninja... but he fights fate and does so anyways. It takes a lot more effort than simply following flow, but arguably the entire point of the War Arc is that humanity would rather struggle against a flow than take an easy answer.

Fate doesn't play out for Naruto because while he is fated to fight and kill Sasuke, he never gets to that second step despite having the chance to do so over and over again and when you look at Sasuke... He's also fighting that fate the entire time too, albeit more subconsciously. If he killed Naruto before leaving for Orochimaru he would have played his role well, but just... couldn't. Naruto and Sasuke are fated to kill each other, but it doesn't really make sense for them to. They are spiritually linked, soulmates even. No one really understands Sasuke like Naruto and vice versa. And this was the case for Hashirama and Madara, too. And probably also the case for Indra and Asura given that they were literal brothers. This entire reincarnation cycle is people killing the ones who know and understand them the most. It is a similar dilemma to what Gato mocked ninja for back in the first arc. The person most likely to kill a ninja is another ninja. Even though they have shared culture and similar traumas, they fight and kill each other for the will of those outside of the culture. Indra and Asura is the epitome of this and just a callout of what we do irl, humans have been killing the people who understand us for years. Wars are waged by kings, senates and presidents but fought by soldiers on both sides who probably didn't make that much and just would like to go home to see their families. There's brotherhood between the enemies and Indra and Asura makes that very literal.

I wanted to also get into why I don't mind Kaguya, buuuuut this is already pretty long and she doesn't fit super well into the brothers' story, so I'll just save that for another post

Sakura fans out there shipping their self insert with Indra and Ashura Otsutsuki LMAO 🤣 Why would the otsutsukis bother about that No Clan girl. I doubt they even know about her existence😂 I bet this all started after Toneri showed interest in Hinata. They think Otsutsukis will go crazy for Sakura too. They literally have no shame in shipping her with dead Ancestors but can't even tolerate Hinata being shipped with her CANON husband.

Exactly. It’s already a stretch to ship her with every Uchiha just because she’s *married* to one. Like can you imagine Hinata being shipped with every Uzumaki like Nagato, Mito and Kushina? Like seriously why do they always set Sakura up like this???? Madara didn’t give af about her in canon but he would be jealous of Sasuke marrying her????

Plus most likely civilians and ninjas didn’t live together back then and the clans were probably very strict about who future clan heads marry so they’d naturally marry women from STRONG clans. If anything it would be beneath them to marry Sakura because it can jeopardize the clans future (which they would be correct since Sarada needs glasses)

Just like with the series, Sakura stans can’t see beyond the shallow surface, yes, Mito and Kushina and many other women have been described as “beautiful” in the series BUT beneath that beauty is STRENGTH whether through hard work or blood which Sakura does neither. Even Toneri didn’t go after Hinata JUST for beauty, she’s a HYUGA and a PRINCESS.

I just realized one title Sakura will never have that Tsunade has is “Princess” 🤭

Senju's Family Crest: Deeper meaning

金剛杵kongousho/vajra, an important buddhist symbol. 金剛 is hardest material, diamond, indestructible.

Indra, his rivals, Asura, and his weapon Vajra

Indra/Asura/Vajra are a bit different in Hinduism vs jp, mainly esoteric, Buddhism... So i want to learn, write, discuss.

Obviously, Religions, esp Hinduism, very diverse(diff groups/sects/regions say diff things, across diff time periods), this is general/simplified idea. if want correct/add.

Hinduism

Indra, said to be "title", rather than "name", king of Svarga, king of devas, associated with rain/storms. Known to wield Vajra, unstoppable, indestructible thunderbolt to vanquish evil spirits/sinners. A legend says that Indra has 1000 eyes, which used to be ?????? which he was cursed with due to his lust for women.

A legend says that Indra's Vajra originated a spinal column of Sage Dhadhichi, bones blessed by Lord Shiva earlier, who offered it, sacrificing himself, to help Indra defeat a powerful asura, Vritra.

Devas are rivals of Asuras, which are sometimes demonlike, power hungry, associated with drought/famine. Indra killing Vritra symbolizes drought/rain cycle.

Param Vir Chakra, designed by Savitribai Khanolkar, India's highest military medal has Indra's Vajra, symbolizing Sage Dhadhichi's great, selfless sacrifice.

Random: In Hindi indradhanush-> Indra's bow, rainbow. eng/hindi, look/sound different but think similar. rain, indra(rain/storms god) + bow(weapon) =rainbow.

indo-european heritage? There's also many other languages of India. I wonder how common "rain/god+ bow" is?

jp/chinese, 虹niji/rainbow = 虫/creature + 工/strike because think as living dragon/snake which ran through the sky. So 虹"male" and 蜺/霓"female" rainbows, top/dimmer one in double rainbow. Unsure about the kunyomi(native japanese pronunciation, not chinese) origin though.

Japanese Buddhism

三十三間堂sanjuusangendo/33 forms hall, in Kyoto, has famous 28 group of statues/gods who are protectors of main idol, SenjuKannon considered servants/protectors of Buddhist Teachings. link. 大梵天daibonten/Brahman, In Hinduism more like concept of ultimate reality, existence, but In Buddhism more like god said to spread the teachings of Buddhism. 帝釈天Taishakuten, King of Tendou/Deva realm, and 天部tenbu/devas race. often seen next to Oobonten. Center/commander of the 四天王/4 heavenly kings, who monitor/judge humans. Connected to warding evil, healing illness. 阿修羅王Ashuraou, King of Shuradou/Asura realm, and Ashuras race, sometimes rivals to Tenbu. In some interpretations seen as a sun god. in particular, main purpose is "protection of Buddhist teachings".

六道rikudou/6 paths of reincarnation, are said to be tendou, ningendou/human, shuradou, chikushoudou/animal, gakidou/hungry spirit, jigokudou/naraka, hell. They live/die/reborn.

外道gedo(in relation to rikudou)/outer path, is outside the circle of reincarnation, such as tengudou, because tengu(former monk died with pride) knows buddhist teachings, can't reincarnate as a human, but is immortal as a tengu so can't continue. 解脱gedasu/moksha, enlightment, is another example.

五鈷杵gokusho is type of Kongosho has four prongs pointed to center one. One side said to represent 5 buddhas, 5 wisdoms, while the other 5 greeds to mean indestructible truth of Buddhism. (Butsuma + 4 children adds up to 5?)

A legend says Vajra had multiple prongs pointed outward to showing it's use as a weapon to harm. However, Buddha desires end suffering/harm for all , so he took and pushed prongs inward to turn weapon into an equally powerful tool for self improvement, destroying inner desires, greeds, etc.

In Naruto

Shintou Kami sometimes seen as manifestations of Buddhas/Tenbu(本地垂迹), so I think it fits to see OotsutsukiIndra's Uchiha use Kami(Amaterasu, etc) from creation story as the name of their doujutsu.

Senju's family crest is a vajra with inward prongs, in a sense, a former unstoppable/indestructible weapon of Indra turned into a peaceful staff -> A symbol of OotsutsukiAsura's desire or prophecy to change OotsutsukiIndra.

Hashirama not wearing Senju headband, is kind of like giving up changing Madara. Or changing priorities, gokusho(desires to change OotsutsukiIndra) -> leaf(village protection).

But there's one that does not give up.
