Understanding Agarwood: From Tree to Incense
Tumblr media
IntroductionAgarwood, known as Oudh in many parts of the world, is a resinous heartwood that forms in the Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees. Revered for its distinctive fragrance, Agarwood has been a part of spiritual and cultural practices for centuries. In this journey from tree to incense, we will explore the fascinating transformation of Agarwood and highlight two exceptional products from Jain Perfumers: their 100% Natural Agarwood / Oudh Incense Sticks and Agarwood Incense Sticks. The Origins of AgarwoodAgarwood's journey begins in the dense forests of Southeast Asia, where Aquilaria trees grow. Interestingly, Agarwood is not a naturally occurring heartwood. It forms when the tree is infected by a particular type of mold. As a response to this infection, the tree produces a dark, fragrant resin, transforming the infected wood into Agarwood, a substance more precious than gold in some cultures. The Harvesting ProcessThe harvesting of Agarwood is a meticulous process. Expert harvesters look for trees that are at least 20 years old, as older trees produce a higher quality of resin. The infected parts of the tree are carefully extracted, ensuring the sustainability of this precious resource. This extraction is crucial as it affects the quality of the final product - the Agarwood incense sticks. Crafting the IncenseOnce harvested, the Agarwood is processed into a fine powder. This powder is then mixed with a natural binding agent to form incense sticks. The crafting of these sticks is an art in itself, often carried out by skilled artisans who have learned the trade through generations. Jain Perfumers' Exquisite Agarwood Incense Sticks
Jain Perfumers offers two remarkable Agarwood products:
100% Natural Agarwood / Oudh Incense Sticks:
These incense sticks are a testament to purity and quality. Each stick, measuring 3 mm, contains about 45 to 50 pieces, ensuring a long-lasting supply. They are perfect for those who appreciate the natural and unadulterated essence of Agarwood. Agarwood Incense Sticks:
These carefully crafted sticks come in a pack of 15, each one promising a rich and immersive scent experience. They are ideal for meditation, relaxation, or simply creating a serene ambiance in your space. The Scent ProfileThe fragrance of Agarwood is complex and multifaceted. It has a deep, woody base with hints of sweetness, sometimes described as a blend of amber, sandalwood, and musk. This unique aroma is not just pleasing to the senses but also holds therapeutic properties. It is known to reduce stress, enhance mental clarity, and promote overall well-being. Uses and BenefitsAgarwood incense sticks are more than just aromatic enhancers. They play a crucial role in religious ceremonies and meditation practices across various cultures. The scent of Agarwood is believed to connect the physical and the spiritual, enhancing the meditation experience and creating a bridge between the mortal and the divine. Sustainability and Ethical SourcingA critical aspect of Agarwood production is sustainability. Due to its high value, Agarwood has been subject to overharvesting, leading to the endangerment of Aquilaria trees. Jain Perfumers is committed to ethical sourcing, ensuring that their products are not only of the highest quality but also environmentally responsible. ConclusionThe allure of Agarwood, from its mystical origins in the heart of the forest to the exquisite incense sticks crafted by Jain Perfumers, is a journey of transformation. Whether for spiritual, therapeutic, or simply for the love of its unique fragrance, Agarwood incense sticks offer an unparalleled aromatic experience. Visit Jain Perfumers to explore these natural, ethically sourced Agarwood products and immerse yourself in the ancient and mystical world of Oudh.

do you know of any perfumes that have a sort of medieval knight vibe? like if said knight wasn’t sweaty and stinky from battle, that is. i did a little searching on my own, but didn’t come up with any good results, so thought you might know!
ok so definitely yes i do, and also i love this question. some options, ranging from the literal to the idealised:
nevertheless, she persisted by bpal: joan of arc themed perfume. it's a bit of a polarizing one; the oudh and jasmine lean indolic and a little dirty, but i like that in this context. it's not stinky-stinky knight, but artistic-perfume-stinky knight. and there's a metallic aspect to it, like plate armour or blades. one of the more interesting scents i own tbh.
fighter by bpal: this one was too metallic and leathery for me. smells a bit like blood, it has that specific salty iron tang. definitely evocative tho.
vial of holy water by bpal: for the paladins out there. a fresh and clean cologne-type scent for the most righteous of knights; i really enjoyed wearing it until my bf stole it from me.
harvest mouse by zoologist: this is a jolly knight at a ren-faire tavern, enjoying a feast of sweet bread and ale. sun-warmed and rustic feel. soldier poet king by the oh hellos is playing in the background. perhaps a bit unsubtle, but fun nonetheless.
l'ombre dans l'eau by dyptique: hear me out. i know this is a rose fragrance. what do roses have to do with knights, you ask? idk but the dense green thorny foliage and shadowy ambiance of this scent make me think of courtly love, fairytales and arthuriana. this is a knight in a pre-raphaelite painting.
hermann à mes côtés me paraissait une ombre by eldo: a strange, sullen knight riding like a shadow through bare winter woods, headed to a church to pray for absolution from some unspeakable sin. coffin dirt, church incense, cold air. i love this fragrance so much.
all of these are extremely different from one another so i can't promise you'll like any of them, but hopefully my vibe descriptions help you!

Arabian perfumes to drow - shitpost
Today I was in a perfume-shop and I just got the feeling that some arabian perfumes would be very suitable for drow. If I think back to descriptions of the incenses, oils and stuff they use, always the strong, heavy, deep scents are the first to come to my mind.
So I checked some of arabian perfumes from the trademark Al Haramain and I found some incredibly drow-styled bottles and also scents. The matrons (and literally all nobles, especially the fancy wizards I'm looking at you Nalfein and Pharaun) would going crazy for these.
Look at these bottles (click on them, their sizing is crappy):

The Signs as Perfumes
♈️ Aries

♉️ Taurus
Earth Venus Scent: Costus Perfume: Francesca Bianchi Under My Skin notes: spicy notes, iris, leather, costus, ambergris, sandalwood, vanilla A spicy, sensual, rich scent, with a very Taurean sense of barbaric luxury. A touch of sweetness, textures of fur and leather, and the musky scent of costus.
♊️ Gemini
Air Mercury Scent: Mastic Perfume: Tom Ford Vert de Bois Notes: mastic, anise, patchouli, rose A medicinal-boozy hit of medicinal ouzo and the cooling Mediterranean scent of mastic, over a funky, androgynous 70’s mossy patchouli that oozes Mercurial trickster energy.
♋️ Cancer
Water Moon Scent: Camphor Perfume: Bogue Douleur!2 Notes: camphor, melon, cucumber, water, rose, mint A sleek minimalist aquatic scent with a Cancerian balance between tenderness and firmness.
♌️ Leo
Fire Sun Scent: Frankincense Perfume: Masque Milano Mandala Notes: frankincense, cedar, myrrh, cardamom, cinnamon, clove A powerful, radiant smoky incense with an unusually sunny, spacious feeling: a lion prowling the savannah.
♍️ Virgo
Earth Mercury Scent: Sandalwood Perfume: Masque Milano Lost Alice notes: sandalwood, carrot, iris, milk, bergamot, tea A subdued, contemplative, milky-tan sandalwood-iris, quite appropriate to Virgo’s conscientious personality.
♎️ Libra
Air Venus Scent: Galbanum Perfume: Parfums Dusita Fleur de Lalita notes: rose, lily, galbanum, violet leaf, geranium A cool, refined, ladylike breezy floral, with very Libran intelligent-aesthete vibes; the sharp green note of galbanum balancing a soft Venusian rose.
♏️ Scorpio
Water Mars Scent: Opoponax Perfume: Abdessalaam Milano Caffe notes: coffee, chocolate, opoponax, woody notes a dark, rich, dignified coffee-chocolate scent (like all stimulants, associated with Mars), elevated with resinous opoponax.
♐️ Sagittarius
Fire Jupiter Scent: Oudh Perfume: Amouage Epic Man notes: nutmeg, mace, oudh, incense A smoky, spicy oudh scent with a Sagittarian adventurous energy.
♑️ Capricorn
Earth Saturn Scent: Benzoin Perfume: Dior Dune notes: benzoin, oakmoss, aldehydes, sandalwood, rosewood A brisk beige cross between cozy benzoin amber and a dry mossy floral. Capricorn discipline and determination in a deceptively cheerful setting.
♒️ Aquarius
Air Saturn Scent: Euphorbium Perfume: Histoires de Parfums 1828 Notes: pine, black pepper, nutmeg, eucalyptus, cedar Euphorbium is the gum from a succulent plant, and allegedly smells like pepper, eucalyptus, or patchouli. 1828 is a lovely, airy, foresty scent with an Aquarian feeling of abstraction.
♓️ Pisces
Water Jupiter Scent: Styrax Perfume: Bogue 10 notes: fig, styrax, bergamot, ylang-ylang Juicy, sappy, sweet-green fig leaves and styrax, in a swirl of greens and shady-sunny florals. Contemplative and tender in a Piscean way.

Agarwood, aloeswood, eaglewood, gharuwood or TheWood of Gods, most commonly referred to as oud or oudh (from Arabic: عود, romanized: ʿūd, pronounced [ʕuːd]), is a fragrant dark resinous wood used in incense, perfume, and small carvings. It is formed in the heartwood of Aquilaria trees when they become infected with a type of mold (Phialophora parasitica) and secrete a resin to combat the mold. Prior to infection, the heartwood is odourless, relatively light and pale coloured; however, as the infection progresses, the tree produces a dark aromatic resin, called aloes (not to be confused with Aloe ferox, the succulent commonly known as the bitter aloe) or agar (not to be confused with the edible, algae-derived agar) as well as gaharu, jinko, oud, or oodhaguru, in response to the attack, which results in a very dense, dark, resin-embedded heartwood. The resin-embedded wood is valued in East and South Asian cultures for its distinctive fragrance, and thus is used for incense and perfumes.
First-grade agarwood is one of the most expensive natural raw materials in the world,[4] with 2010 prices for superior pure material as high as US$100,000/kg, although in practice adulteration of the wood and oil is common, allowing for prices as low as US$100/kg.[5] A whole range of qualities and products are on the market, varying in quality with geographical location, botanical species, the age of the specific tree, cultural deposition and the section of the tree where the piece of agarwood stems from.[6] As of 2013, the current global market for agarwood is estimated to be in the range of US$6–8 billion and is growing rapidly.[7]
The odour of agarwood is complex and pleasing,[24] with few or no similar natural analogues. In the perfume state, the scent is mainly distinguished by a combination of "oriental-woody" and "very soft fruity-floral" notes. The incense smoke is also characterized by a "sweet-balsamic" note and "shades of vanilla and musk" and amber (not to be confused with ambergris).[6
note: apparently "amber" is apparently not the smell of actual amber, its a specific combination of other scents called amber

Wednesday Characters as D+F Fragrances
I’m currently heavily hyperfixated on two things: Wednesday and perfume. I decided I might as well combine the two, and have some fun with one of the most Wednesday-esque perfume houses I have ever seen, that being Death and Floral. These aren’t necessarily what I think these characters would wear, but more what they would smell like as a whole, or maybe they just fit the vibe? I don’t totally know, because this is just for fun! Use this as an interesting look into the characters, OR use it as a perfume rec list! Support small, ethical fragrance houses!!
I have the characters listed, followed by the titles of the scents and then the D+F descriptions of each scent!

I like daisies. I love their simplicity, purity. I love the way that they scatter fields like sprinkles on a cake. I love the warmth of cinnamon in my coffee, fairy lights in the dark, the moon and oudh incense
Tumblr media
The relationship with myself got better when I realized that we are the embodiment of what inspires us, what you love and see inspiration in shapes you. Your choices, the clothes you wear, the music you listen to, what inspires you shapes the very nature of your thoughts and your thoughts power the manifestation of you physical reality
Another might think that daisies are boring, cinnamon tastes strange, fairy lights are childish, the moon is just a big round rock in the sky and oudh smells musty. That's okay, their heart holds a different code.
What we connect to is sacred to us. I have been teaching myself not to let the clash in resonance of another soul create insecurity. And if you are faced with projection just remind yourself that your authenticity may be a trigger for those who are not true to themselves.
