Am I the only young person that feels completely out of touch from all types of media, and just pop culture in general? Like someone will reference an insanely popular band, and I won’t know the band by name, only by their songs. 😭 Or someone will mention a celebrity that has been really popular for 10+ years, and I won’t be able to recognize them by their face, I’m just familiar with the names. I’m on social media a ton, but still don’t know who 8/10th of the popular influencers currently are, and I hardly watch movies, read books, or watch tv shows. Like I’m completely a blank slate, it’s insane, lol.

Does anyone have any book, music, tv show, or movie recs?

My experiences are not universal, but it seems to me that the music industry relies 100% on ads rather than word of mouth to spread their new songs, because ever since I started using ad blocker a year or two ago I haven't heard a single one, not even through cultural osmosis. When I was a teenager the internet was taken by storm with summer hits that spread like wildfire; the first youtube video to crack a billion views was Gangnam Style in December 2012. Party Rock Anthem, Pokerface, Bad Romance, Call Me Maybe, Thrift Shop, Somebody That I Used to Know, Baby, Firework, Shake it Off, you couldn't avoid them even if you tried! They were so popular that they would play EVERYWHERE, in real life and on social media, but save for a handful of tumblr posts after the Super Bowl I've never heard a single Kendrick Lamar song. I don't know anything about Chappell Roan except she wears weird costumes, so I guess her schtick is kinda like early Lady Gaga with her meat dresses? And what the hell is Brat Summer? Is that the name of a band, or a specific song, or an album, or what? Searching titles, I don't recognize a single one. I'm completely out of the cultural loop. I'm not even 30 but I feel like an old man!

Remember in The Matrix how Joey Pants betrays his crewmates so he can be plugged back in and forget the real world even exists? That's kinda how I feel. I have escaped the blighted hellscape of 24/7 advertisements, but now what? I am an island. I am an alien. I have no cultural identity that I can bond with other people over. I have been cut off from society, and I haven't found anything meaningful or productive to fill the void yet. I know I need to find purpose in my life beyond consuming media, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm missing out on something. Normal people have so much, and I have so little.
