i think Colin Farrell in The Banshees of Inisherin might be the most “babygirl” a real live grown man has ever looked in a movie. i don’t mean in the twitter fanart way where i want Pádraic to be objectified or whatever, i mean that throughout the movie, even when he does some pretty objectively awful or “fuck around and find out” things, you can’t help but feel so, so bad for Pádraic, because he constantly literally just looks like this

Poll: Round 1a #4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Reminder that Break up is being used loosely here and not all relationships may be romantic in nature
Propaganda under cut:
Colm Doherty and Pádraic Súilleabháin:
"Their breakup is the main focus of the movie. Basically (spoilers) they’ve been best friends their whole lives, until one day Colm decides that Pádraic is too boring and cuts him off completely. Pàdraic has trouble accepting this and continues to try to talk with him, until Colm gets fed up and declares, like the VERY mentally healthy guy he is, that every time Pàdraic bothers him he will cut off one of the fingers on his left hand. Fast forward and Colm has cut off all his left hand fingers and thrown them at Pàdraic’s door and Pàdraic’s pet donkey chokes on the fingers and dies. Pàdraic then burns down Colm’s house in retaliation, and when Colm suggest’s that that’s the end of their feud, Pàdraic says that it will only end when one of them is dead. Absolutely devastating movie, I highly recommend it if you haven’t watched it."
Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr:
"they've been divorced and then back together so many times lol. their bitterest breakup is probably the one in first class though. in which erik puts on a helmet to block charles out of his head, kills a man and causes charles to feel that man's pain of dying, tries to kill a bunch more people before charles stops him, accidentally shoots charles which causes him to remain paralyzed for the rest of his life, and then runs away with his sister, abandoning him entirely not even knowing if he'll survive his injury."

THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN (2022)
[Caption: gifs from the film. Pádraic stands on the beach, next to Colm (off-screen), seen from his profile. They’re discussing the fighting on the mainland, on the other side of the water. Colm says, ominously, “Some things, there’s no moving on from.” He turns around to stare intently at Colm and adds, “And I think that’s a good thing.”]

"Haven't heard any rifle fire from the mainland in a day or two. I think they're coming to the end of it. I'm sure they'll be at it again soon enough, aren't you? Some things there's no movin' on from. And I think that's a good thing."

I cannot get it out of my head the way both The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once have a character that is kind (thought to be naive and a little dumb) and a character that is the "realistic" one (very serious and trying to take control of their own life).
Evelyn and Colm are both trying to take control of their lives. Evelyn brushes off her husband when he tries to talk to her, she's focused on trying to get papers ready for the appointment. She is worries that when she's distracted Waymond is going to mess something up. Colm is trying to make something that he can be proud of at the end of his life. He turns away Pádraic because he is dull and kind and doing nothing to make Colm's life more interesting.
On the other hand, both Waymond and Pádraic are kind and enjoy what they have (for the most part). Both of them are regarded as naive and a little gullible, even when they really aren't. Waymond uses his kindness to fight. That is his weapon of choice, not violence because kindness will often get you further ("you can trap more flies with honey than vinegar" etc. etc.). Pádraic is kind because that is what he has learned to be. He remembers people for their kindness and assumes other do too.
Another interesting thing is the fact that both of the "main characters" change to reflect their counterpart. Pádraic tries to fix his relationship with Colm through kindness, but as it continues to backfire and things get worse, he becomes less and less kind. Throughout The Banshees of Inisherin, Pádraic steadily becomes more like Colm. However, in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Evelyn chooses to fight with kindness like Waymond and actually reaches her goal. Because if nothing matters, why not choose to be kind?

I’m obsessed with Banshees of Inisherin and I have so many thoughts about it…
SPOILERS
Head Canons: family life (1)
- I imagine that before Pádraic’s and Siobhan’s parents died they all lived together in their cottage. Siobhan would help their mother in the household while Pádraic and their father worked outside.
-Siobhan and her mother were very like minded. She was a smart & beautiful woman. So up to Mr & Mrs Súilleabháin deaths she did not feel the loneliness as a constant companion.
-as a child Siobhan would come up with stories and would tell them to Pádraic.
-young Pádraic wanted to be nice to everyone so he would give away the milk for free. The elder Mr. Súilleabháin had to sit him down and explain that they needed that income to buy food.
-it hit Siobhan & Pádraic really hard when their parents died. But given the time (1915- when they died) it was expected of men to hide their feelings and just to take it. So Pádraic smiled the pain away.
-they both silently agreed that non of them would move into their parents bedroom. They left everything like it was. To keep the memories.
- Siobhan knew it was upon her to look after her (younger?) brother. He never did (or learned how to do) the laundry, cook or do the shopping. She didn’t think he could survive without her.
