Oh, I’m just having a much-deserved bite to eat with a friend,” Ignis continues; And Prompto’s head snaps back to look at Ignis so hard, it aches.

flufftober day 1 - promnis 'no stakes'
Title: No Stakes Chapter: 1 of 6 Fandom: FFXV Pairing: Promnis (Prompto Argentum x Ignis Scientia) Rating: Teen (Subtle Flirting - Fluff - Ep Ignis V2) Word Count: ~2,730 Prompt: "I've got you."
Summary: Prompto gets thrown into a life he never wanted. All he cared about was his best friend, but as their roadtrip became something entirely different, things began to change.
A/N: Hello! I am participating in this year's Flufftober challenge. It was definitely a challenge for me, as I normally don't stick to just fluff. I hope you'll enjoy as I update this story over the course of the month.
---
Prompto was not having fun. At all.
Not that he thought the other guys were having their own fun, as he knew they were all in the same boat. It was kind of weird, if you thought about it. Here he was, someone that happened to become best friends with the Prince of Lucis, and because of that was suddenly thrust into his inner circle. Becoming a Crownsguard member was never something that had ever crossed Prompto’s mind when he befriended the Prince at the beginning of high school. No, he thought that Noctis was really nice and kind of cool, and wanted to hang out with him. That was it.
Cut to four years later, and now here he was, standing off to the side as he watched his best friend, and two guys who had somehow become sort of friends to him, fight off a pack of animals that he couldn’t seem to get a beat on. The animals were snarling, baring their fangs at all of them. Prompto held up his gun and took aim, hoping to the Six that he wasn’t about to shoot one of his friends accidentally. Ignis had told him over and over because they were in the protection of the Prince, that friendly fire wouldn’t really hurt them that much. Ignis Scientia - who was the Prince’s right hand, who would know anything and everything there was to know about what could, and could not, affect the group.
“Prompto! What the hell are you doing?!” Gladio Amicitia, the manliest man that Prompto had ever known, yelled at him from twenty feet away. He was also the Prince’s technical Shield, whose job was to protect the Prince at all costs. “Can’t you aim better?!”
“I’m trying!” He tried not to sound as panicked as he felt, but it was difficult. He could see Ignis and Noctis doing their thing that made him wish he could be close to one of them like that. To see Ignis and Noctis move through battle together was a thing of beauty - they were so in sync with each other it was a bit off putting. “Can’t you back away for a little bit so I can get some shots into them?”
“No!” Gladio yelled back at him, as he went attacking with his very large shield, pushing one of the beasts away. “Noctis!”
The Prince used his warp strike ability, Prompto staring at the blue image of him as it disappeared, using his powers to get into the thick of battle. He fired off another shot, and managed to kill one of the animals. He let out a little whoop, pleased that he was able to contribute to this battle. He knew he was the weakest one when it came to these fights, and tried his best to hold his own, but sometimes it was difficult.
A gloved hand touched his shoulder, drawing his attention to his left. “Don’t worry, Prompto. You’re getting better. I know it’s challenging.” Ignis had sweat dripping from both of his brows, but he could see that the hunt had invigorated something inside of him, as he had a smile on his face that Prompto wished desperately was for him. “You are doing the best that you can.”
“It’s not good enough.” Gladio and Noctis came over to where they were standing, Gladio clearly upset by the accidental misfire. “You grazed my arm, you ass.”
“I didn’t mean to.” Prompto wasn’t going to get upset. Gladio had the tendency of being a bully at times, but only because he was the oldest of them all. He had more experience than any of them when it came to the scenarios they were now being thrown into on the regular. “It was an accident.”
“He’s fine.” Noctis tossed Gladio an elixir that he caught with expertise and broke it over his head. “You did good, Prompto. Better.” Noctis grinned, and patted his shoulder in the same way that Ignis had just done. But Ignis’ touch had felt a little different from Noctis’ - not that Prompto was putting any stock into that, as he knew that it was always going to be a no go for that one. “Come on - how about we go and celebrate at Takka’s before going out on another hunt?”
His stomach rumbled. “I could go for something dead.” He grinned, and threw his arm over Noctis’ shoulder, the two of them laughing together like they used to in school. “Are you treating, Prince?”
“Nah. But Ignis is.”
“Very funny, Your Highness.” Ignis’ voice drifted behind them. Prompto began to laugh with Noctis, as they began to make their way back towards Hammerhead, as it had been a long day. Finishing that hunt felt good, but now he wanted to relax for the rest of the night.
They had been out on the road for four weeks now. Insomnia had fallen, the King had been killed, and now they were technically dead according to the news reports. No one knew where they were, or where they were to be found, which was fine. Ignis said that it would work to their advantage, allowing them to stay off the radar from Niflheim. Of course, Prompto knew that that wouldn’t work forever, but hadn’t said anything as he knew it wouldn’t be appropriate. No, they all knew what their course of action was to be now - they had to keep Noctis safe, and get him to Altissia somehow.
It was dark by the time they made it back to Hammerhead. “Hey, can we sleep in the caravan tonight?” Prompto asked, looking at Ignis who had hung back as Noctis and Gladio continued their way into the rest stop. “Or do we not have enough funds for that right now?”
“We have plenty.” Ignis looked over at the Prince. “Is that what His Highness is requesting?”
Prompto shrugged. “I dunno. I know I’d like it. Hey, Noct!” He called out to the Prince, who turned around to look at him. “Caravan tonight??” He pointed to the caravan behind where he and Ignis were standing. Noctis gave him a thumb’s up, then went into the restaurant with Gladio. “Guess that’s a yes, Iggy.”
“I suppose it would be.”
He’d noticed that Ignis still had a look on his face that he wasn’t used to seeing. But, figuring it had something to do with how they’d fought today rather than anything else, he gave a quick nod of his head, and then followed Noctis and Gladio into the restaurant to take in his fill of some good food.
The caravan was cramped, but it didn’t bother Prompto. He was glad to be sleeping on a mattress. He didn’t mind camping, in fact - it had been one of the things he’d been looking forward to the most for this trip, but he did miss the comforts of home.
Home.
He had no home now.
No, no. Don’t think about that. He shook his head, and exhaled a deep sigh. He tried not to think about what had happened to Insomnia, as it would really do no good. He had to keep going, otherwise he would completely break down, and no one in this caravan needed that.
“Are you all right, Prompto?”
Turning his head, he saw that Ignis was looking at him from across the way. “I’m fine, Iggy. Did I wake you up?”
“No, I was awake. Can’t quite get to sleep.” Ignis yawned, then turned his head to look up at the ceiling of the caravan. “I heard you sigh. Are you sure you’re alright?”
Prompto winced. “Yeah, Iggy. I’m okay. It’s just…” He closed his eyes, and exhaled another sigh. “It’s really tough. I don’t know how you’re handling all of this, but I’m struggling. A lot.”
“Appearances can be deceiving, Prompto.” He saw a small smirk on Ignis’ lips. “I’m doing my best to fulfill my duty to the Prince, as well as make sure things are running smoothly.”
“I’m holding everyone back, aren’t I?”
Ignis sat up, Prompto following suit as they looked across at one another. “Never think that, Prompto. You are doing the best that you can. Do you think I have experience in what we’ve been thrown into? Because I can assure you, I do not.”
“You make it look like you do.” Prompto could see Ignis was looking over at the door where Gladio and Noctis were sleeping. The caravan was split into two sections - the back had a much larger bed that could be occupied by two people, while the front had a cot and a couch that two people could sleep on. They had stayed here a couple of times, but most times they would sleep at a haven. “I’m trying my best, Ignis.”
“I know you are. That is why I do not wish for you to have those thoughts, but I know that that is easier said than done.”
Prompto returned to laying down, tucking his arms behind his head as he stared up at the ceiling. “I’m afraid I’m going to make a mistake, and it’s going to be a bad one.”
“If you make a mistake, we will be there to help.” He could hear Ignis moving back down into a lying position as well. “This is a lot. We all know that. But how we proceed will help us survive.”
“Okay, Iggy.” Prompto sighed softly. “Sorry to keep you awake. I’m going to try and sleep now. Don’t want to be tired tomorrow when I know we’ve got some more hunts to go on.”
“Good night, Prompto. Sweet dreams.”
He closed his eyes, but sleep didn’t come for another two hours. He listened to Ignis’ even breaths, and wondered how he could be more like Ignis. Ignis Scientia, the Prince’s Adviser and Strategist. Of course Ignis knew what to do out here as he’d been training for it his entire life. But him? He got a crash course in combat when they graduated high school, and it had been all he’d known since then. Now he was putting his own training to use, however badly he was doing.
In the morning, he woke up and saw that he was alone. Gladio and Noctis were still asleep, and so he went outside and saw that Ignis had a cup of coffee and was sitting towards the east, watching the sun rise.
“The sky is so different out here.” Prompto remarked, as he took a seat near Ignis. “The colors are so vivid compared to back home.”
“That would be because of the barrier.” Ignis brought his cup of coffee up to his lips and took a deep sip. “Nature is truly remarkable, don’t you think, Prompto?”
“I do.” The sky was now turning a pale orange, and slowly transitioning to the blue that would become their enemy later in the day. That was one of things he missed most about Insomnia - the barrier kept it at a reasonable temperature all the time, and now without it, he was suffering through the elements like everyone else in the Lucian kingdom.
They said nothing else, both respecting the quiet. Noctis came out and sat down next to Ignis, who immediately got up to go and grab some coffee for the Prince. Gladio stumbled out a few minutes later, scratching the back of his neck as a loud yawn left his mouth. “What are we doing today?” Gladio asked.
“There’s a hunt in the mines nearby.” Noctis yawned, then tipped his chair back to sit on the two back legs. “Supposed to pay good money.”
“The mines it is, then.”
Prompto felt his stomach clench. The last time they’d gone to those mines, it hadn’t turned out so great for him. But it was a new day, and that meant that anything could happen. It didn’t necessarily mean that something bad was going to happen again to him. No, he knew that this wasn’t going to be like the last time.
They had breakfast, and then headed out before the sun rose too high into the sky. Prompto hummed to himself as they made their way across the desert, and headed towards the mine only a little ways away from Hammerhead. As they made their way into the cave, their flashlights turned on on their chests. Not that it did much good - the light only went out a few feet in front of you, and even that wasn’t enough in Prompto’s opinion.
The sound of feet shuffling on the ground had Prompto turning around fast. “Behind us!” He shouted, as he saw a group of Bombs coming right towards them. The light that shone off of them made them look more menacing than they were, and it only intensified that awful feeling that had yet to leave Prompto’s gut.
“Come on!” Noctis shouted, as he charged towards the group, ready to spring into action as if it was the most natural thing to do.
Prompto fired off a few shots, feeling somewhat helpless, but after he was able to stop two on his own, he gained his confidence back. He saw Ignis sprint towards danger, his daggers out and ready to be used. It was still so strange to see both Ignis and Gladio fight, as he never really had seen it before coming on this trip. Cor had always told him that they were a sight to behold, as they’d been training to protect the Prince since high school. Prompto was a little jealous, as he wished he’d had the same training, but really - he was the Prince’s best friend. That was it. He had no stake in this game. Not like Ignis and Gladio did.
They concluded the hunt, finishing off the last varmint with a flourish from the Prince. “Let’s head back.” Noctis groaned. “I’m starving.”
“You’re always hungry, Your Highness!” Prompto teased his best friend, who shoved him away with a playful shove. But, it was enough of a shove that Prompto began to lose his footing, and that wasn’t good as they were in a mine that had a bunch of different drops to who knew where. “W-Whoa!” He tried to grasp at the air, as if it would solidify for him, and turn into something he could hold onto before falling to his impending doom.
Just as he began to go over, a strong hand slammed down on his forearm, and yanked him back upwards. “I’ve got you.” Ignis’ breath touched his cheek, as his hand stayed tight around Prompto’s forearm, their chests coming into contact at the close proximity that had naturally occurred by moving so fast to save him. And he believed him. He knew that he was in no danger of falling backwards, not when Ignis was holding onto him for dear life.
“What’s taking so long?” Noctis’ voice drifted from the front of the mine. “Hurry up - I’m really hungry.”
Prompto stared into Ignis’ eyes, the two of them still standing so close to each other. Prompto wanted to say something. Anything. Thank you. You didn’t have to do that. You saved me. I think you’re beautiful. You look nice without glasses. Your grip is so firm. All of these things were racing through his mind as he couldn’t look away from Ignis, who was staring directly into his soul.
It lasted for a total of maybe five seconds, but it felt like an eternity to Prompto. Ignis slowly relaxed his grip on Prompto’s arm, and then took a step back. “Coming, Your Highness.” Ignis said the words while still looking at Prompto. But soon, he turned his head and began to walk out towards the entrance to the mine. Prompto’s shoulders dropped as he exhaled a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.
What the hell was that??
He took off and joined the group outside, trying to shake off this strange feeling. Being in such close proximity to Ignis had been jolting - and not in a bad way. He reached for his forearm where Ignis had grabbed onto him, and tried to take away the touch that was still there with his own hand. But it did no good. Ignis’ grip had been branded onto him, and after that intense staredown with him, Prompto knew that he was in trouble.
Big trouble.

Hey, here's a fun new game. Put "📓" or some other version of a book emoji into my inbox and I'll explain the plot of a fanfiction that I haven't written but daydream about.
So, little known Mei fact, but I have a love/hate relationship with fluff. I love the concept of it, but the execution/reading of it makes me break out in hives unless someone in the plot has an unnecessary emotional breakdown about worthiness or something. (I have a therapist, don't @ me) So I have several fanfic ideas that start out from the most benign fluffiness and devolve into pure anguish just because that's what my brain do. This is not a particular plot idea, because it has happened so many times with so many different pairings that it's impossible to pick the best (worst) one, but I do really like the Promnis idea that starts with them in a cooking class and ends with a divorce. It has a happy ending, I swear XD

I've been thinking about how I tag things in AO3 -- minimally, though I try to cover the bases for triggers and major story events. It's been on my mind more as time passes and trends of how people tag their fic change.
Like, when I started posting fic, I was putting it on my website or on a mailing list; there was no tagging, just basics like the fic name, the thing it was based on (the mailing list was a comic book fandom, so you'd have like the book's title and the characters involved), a rating, maybe a summary or note as to the fic's content (i.e. if it was slash, gen, etc.), the length of the fic by kb count or word count. That was it. You saw this header info, and you chose to read or not based on that. You got what the author gave you. The end.
Now, I look at tags on AO3 and they feel like they spoil the whole fic. There's a list of everything that happens in the fic, from kissing to specific sex acts. There's X kind of smut, with Y and Z tools involved. There's X type of Y character portrayal (Sane Sephiroth is one I see frequently in the FFVII tags, and I guess that's a choice). It's kind of overwhelming.
Obviously, certain tags, such as ones for certain themes in the fic, or character death, or warnings for gore or sexual assault or, idk, mpreg, are valuable and necessary. I consider them vital to the fic. It's important to let readers know so they can make an informed choice. But when the tags start covering every aspect of the fic, I can't help but wonder what the point is.
Especially when I look at a lot of the fic that I put up when I got my AO3 account in 2012 or whenever, and the tags are extremely basic: characters, pairings, any major thing that I think might need to be warned for, and... that's about it. Sometimes I wonder if I should go back and add to them.
But you know what? Not only is that a lot of effort I don't have the energy for, I don't want to. I don't intend to summarize my entire fic in the tags. My fic doesn't need a tag that notes "Kujo Jotaro Smokes" because I'm pretty confident that anyone reading my JJBA fic will be aware of a basic character trait. (And yes, that is an existing tag on AO3. Why? Why anything? Why do people persist in adding ship names to the tags, even when the ship is clearly stated in the pairing? I searched for Prompto/Ignis; an additional "Promnis" tag is overkill.)
In other words, I'm not going to change how I tag. You'll get the fic I give you, and you'll like it.

Questions! 1) Are you a megane IRL? 2) Do you enjoy other FF games, or just XV? 3) Do you prefer the Ep Ignis ending, or the main ending to their story? 4) Who do you ship Ignis with the most, if at all? 5) What's your favorite color? 6) Has anything come out recently you really enjoyed?
Ahhhhh YAY thank you so much for sending me an ask! I'm excited!!
1) Are you a megane IRL?
Sort of?? I'd always wanted glasses and got my wish a few years ago! I'm a bit farsighted (objects turn blurry once they get a few inches close to my face) so I typically only wear glasses when I am focusing on screens (such as my computer monitor, TV or phone), otherwise I don't need them and can see quite well. But does this classify me as an Official Megane™? I guess so, since there is usually a screen involved in my day to day life. 😂
2) Do you enjoy other FF games, or just XV?
While XV is my favourite for a majority of reasons, I've played and enjoyed quite a few other FF games over the years! I especially love 6, 7 and 9. My favourite RPG series are actually non-FF though!
3) Do you prefer the Ep Ignis ending, or the main ending to their story?
I assume you mean the "Verse 2" ending of Episode Ignis when you say the Episode Ignis ending - and the answer is… I like both of them, but ultimately I prefer the main ending of the game. I love a good tragedy (as much as it makes my heart hurt!!) and there is beauty in it through the tears. However, I am also not opposed to the idea of "happy, everyone lives" AUs, which Verse 2 delivers quite nicely, so I can enjoy it purely in a "what if" scenario.
4) Who do you ship Ignis with the most, if at all?
Prompto of course!! The Promnis pairing has had me in a chokehold since the game first came out and it's still going strong. It's the main pairing that I write (ha… writing.. what's that…?? 💦💦) and just the mere mention of it evokes strong emotions in me to this day. I won't write an essay here, but I do think they are perfect for each other in every way.
5) What's your favorite color?
Purple! My phone is purple, my bedspread is purple, my childhood room was purple, my hair has been dyed purple multiple times…. if I could have everything be purple, it would be. It's such a happy colour.
6) Has anything come out recently you really enjoyed?
Video game-wise, there have been SO many. My favourite game of all time is Super Mario RPG for the SNES, and when the remake for the Switch was announced I actually cried watching the trailer. Playing it was absolute perfection and I couldn't have asked for anything more! More recently though, I played through Sea of Stars (AMAZING GAME I loved the heck out of it) and just finished Little Kitty Big City, which was a super cute delight!

The normally monotone voice now sounds harried and scared and it’s all he can do not to smile. “Scientia,” he says as calmly as he can manage. “Ignis Scientia. Where would you like this plane delivered?"

If there was one luxury of home that Ignis missed, it would be the Crystal itself. The Crystal that helped to regulate the temperature of Insomnia, that helped to keep the city protected from any intruders. The same Crystal that was now in the hands of those from Niflheim. They needed to get it back, but they had other worries at the moment. The Prince had found three tombs so far, as their trip was slow going. But Ignis wasn’t going to push the Prince into something he didn’t want to do - he knew Noctis better than that.
Right now, they were staying at the 3 Z’s Motel in Taelpar, a reprieve from sleeping at a haven. They had checked in late last night, and now, it was pouring rain outside. They had gone on hunts plenty of times in the rain, but right now, no one in their party was feeling up to it.
“I need to go on an errand.” Ignis announced, not at all interested in sitting in a room all day when there were things that could be done that didn’t require any sort of combat. “Would anyone care to join me?”
“Pass.” Noctis was playing cards with Gladio, the two of them sitting at a table up against the wall.
“I’m good, Ignis.” Gladio shook his head, as he set a card down. Noctis groaned, which made Gladio bellow out a laugh of triumph.
Prompto was looking out the window as he gave his answer to him. “I’ll join you, Iggy. If you want.”
“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t.” Prompto was an enigma to him still. The blond was the least experienced out of all of them when it came to combat, but he was flourishing in a way that Ignis had never really seen before. The confidence that came out of Prompto during those intense battles, especially when the Niflheim Army got a drop on them, was making him see the Prince’s best friend in a different light. “We’ll take chocobos.”
That perked up the blond in a heartbeat. “Okay!” Prompto jumped up, and stretched his arms over his head. “You guys don’t have too much fun without us, okay??” Prompto went over to where Noctis was standing, and took a look at his cards. “Ouch. Good luck.”
“Hey!” Both Gladio and Noctis exclaimed, as if they were both offended by Prompto’s action. Ignis hid his smile by covering his mouth with his gloved hand, and then went over to the front door. “We shall return later. Don’t wait up for us if it gets to be too late.”
“No problem, Ignis.” Noctis commented, placing another card down that caused Gladio to groan. “Prompto - be careful.”
“I will, Your Highness!” Prompto walked past him, and Ignis couldn’t help but catch a whiff of the cologne that Prompto was wearing more often now. The strong scent brought a sense of warmth to his body, his fingers tingling in a way he wasn’t at all expecting to feel as the blond walked by him. “You coming, Iggy?” Prompto stopped just before going out into the rain, looking back at him.
He nodded, and closed the door behind him, not bothering to say anything else to either Noctis or Gladio. He knew that the two of them were becoming closer; the drama that had happened back at Cauthess had all but solidified their reliance on one another. While Ignis was glad to see Noctis was trusting Gladio more, he was also trying to figure out his own way.
Prompto brought over their chocobos, and Ignis hopped up on his after helping Prompto up onto his own mount. “Which way are we going today, Iggy?”
“I thought we’d head back up to Wiz’s. I want to see about getting a few more supplies before we find ourselves in an area where the supplies are lackluster.”
“That sounds like a very smart plan, Iggy. Come on, let’s go!” Prompto clicked his heels against his chocobo, and the chocobo took off in a sprint into the rain.
Ignis smiled as he saw Prompto tilt his head back, letting the rain pelt his face in a way that had to hurt. But there was a smile on Prompto’s face, one that Ignis couldn’t help but smile in return. There was something about the way Prompto acted that made him look at things in a different light. No one else would look up at the rain, and would stay silent. He knew for a fact that both Gladio and Noctis would be yelling obscenities about the rain, and would complain the entire time. But not Prompto.
The ride to Wiz’s was a quiet one, which was perfectly fine by Ignis. They brought their chocobos to the pen and let them walk around, while the two of them headed into the store together. “Gentlemen.” Wiz greeted them with a hand held high. “What brings the….two of you? In today.”
“Yes, two of us.” Ignis smiled, and saw Prompto was already looking at dry goods on the shelves. “Came to stock up on a few items.”
“The weather is about to get really rough.” Wiz pointed towards the back of his ranch. “You two are more than welcome to stay here until it passes, if you wish. I’ll make you a stacker sandwich too, free of charge.”
Prompto turned around, and rapidly nodded his head towards Ignis. Chuckling, Ignis took the hint. “That would be nice, Wiz. Thank you for your hospitality.”
“Thank you for clearing out my inventory.” Wiz winked, and then headed back to the kitchen to prepare their feast.
Ignis spent a fair amount on restocking some of the essentials he would need to cook for their party. After getting things situated, they ate indoors with Wiz, as it was too miserable outside to eat and enjoy their food. Once they’d finished eating, Wiz showed them where they could stay until the storm passed, and then left the two of them alone.
He looked around at the room, and saw that there was only one bed. “Prompto - I’ll take the floor this evening, if we’re stuck here for that long.”
“Ah, not, it’s okay! I can take the floor!” Prompto shook his head. The wind howled outside, the rain pelting the windows, almost coming down in a slant. Ignis knew that it was probably better that they stay out of this, as he could only imagine the visibility outside - it had to be horrendous. “You can sleep on the bed, Iggy. I don’t mind.”
There was no point in arguing with Prompto. That much he has learned since they had begun this trip. Prompto Argentum was very accommodating towards anyone in their party, almost to a fault. But Ignis wasn’t interested in having an argument with him, as he was afraid it would happen if he brought it up. Prompto tended to deflect more than not whenever it came to questions about himself.
Sitting down on the edge of the bed, he saw that there was a table with chairs over by the window, but given how loud the storm was, he didn’t think that Prompto would want to sit there. “Come sit with me.” He patted the bed, in the hopes that Prompto wouldn’t feel weird by his invitation. “I don’t think you will want to sit by the window.”
“You’re right. It’s a little too loud.” A nervous laugh left Prompto’s mouth as he sat on the edge of the bed, four feet away from him. “Not too bad for a ranch, huh.”
“Prompto.” Ignis said his name, and saw him turn his head towards him, the wind continuing to howl outside. “Are you nervous to be here with me?”
“No!” The reply came out short and clipped, and he could see a stain of pink appear on Prompto’s cheeks, accentuating the freckles that were there. Ignis had first noticed them when he’d grabbed onto him in the Belouve Mines, refusing to let him fall down to the depths. They had stood so close to each other, the light from his pocket light shining bright on Prompto’s face, the look of terror and relief that Ignis had grabbed him before he could fall had haunted his brain since that day. The soft color of Prompto’s eyes - lavender. Ignis wasn’t afraid to admit that he found him attractive.
“All right, then.” He knew that nothing else would come out of the blond’s mouth, and that was fine. He was going to ask him something about the supplies when Prompto said something that made him raise his eyebrow up. “What was that, Prompto?” He wasn’t quite sure he heard him correctly.
“D-Did you accept my invitation because you knew that Noctis and Gladio wanted to be alone?” Prompto asked, rushing the words almost as fast as he’d said them a minute ago. “You know they’re fucking, right?”
His eyebrow raised up again. “I beg your pardon?” He was unaware of such a thing.
“I caught them the other night in the tent.” Prompto’s face was now beet red. “I didn’t mean to. I rolled over, and happened to see something that I probably wasn’t supposed to see.”
“Ah.” That made more sense. Because he was not aware of any sort of relations between the two of them. But now that he thought about it, it did feel like both Gladio and Noctis were spending more and more time together. “That’s nice.” He commented. It was none of his business what the two of them were engaging in - he had his own priorities, which were to make sure the Prince stayed alive. That was all.
“You’re not upset by it, are you?”
“Why would I be?”
“I dunno. I always sort of thought that you and Gladio had something going on.” Prompto shrugged his shoulders.
He was about to reply when a very loud clap of thunder sounded overhead, and then plunged the room into darkness. Prompto whimpered, and Ignis’ first thought was to reach out for him. Finding his arm, Ignis pulled Prompto to sit close to him, keeping his arm around him in a way that might seem a bit forward. But he was made aware before they’d left that Prompto had a severe fear of thunderstorms, and now that they were stuck in one, he knew he had to help him.
Prompto was soon sitting on his lap, facing him with his arms wrapped tight around his neck. Ignis didn’t mind at all. The weight on his lap wasn’t awful, and the way that Prompto was clinging to him - it felt nice. He slowly put his arms around Prompto, not wanting to startle him in any sort of way, as another loud clap of thunder boomed over their heads.
“The Six are playing a game of pins.” Ignis murmured into Prompto’s ear, hoping that he was soothing him rather than making him upset. “It will pass soon.” He cradled the back of Prompto’s head with his hand, finding that it felt good to hold Prompto in such a way. “Breathe, Prompto.”
A shuddering breath hit his ear as he heard Prompto whimper. “I’m sorry.” The words were barely audible, but he heard them.
“You have no reason to be.” He kept him close, wanting to offer him a comfort that he knew he might not get otherwise. The room lit up with a lightning strike close by, the sound of thunder coming seconds later. Prompto clung tighter to him. “I’ve got you.” He repeated the words he’d said to him in the mines, hoping that it would help to ground him in this attack that he was experiencing. “I’m here, Prompto.”
“Iggy.” A broken sob left Prompto’s mouth before he buried his face against the side of his neck. Ignis closed his eyes and held him tight, not at all bothered by the tears he could feel touching his skin as they rolled off of Prompto’s face and onto him.
He pushed himself back further onto the bed, and helped Prompto to lay down next to him, never once taking his arms away from his body. Prompto’s leg pushed to be between his legs, Ignis accommodating him without any hesitancy. He hummed a tune, one that he’d heard Prompto hum often when they found themselves in a dungeon. A soft sniffle came into his ear as Prompto’s tears had finally settled down.
“You know that you are safe with me.” Ignis spoke softly into Prompto’s ear, before gently leaving a soft kiss to his temple. “I won’t let anything bad happen to you, Prompto.”
“I know you won’t, Iggy.”
The howling winds began to die down, taking the loud thunder with it. Soon, only the gentle tapping of light rain could be heard on the window. The power came back on a little while later, but it didn’t matter. Prompto was fast asleep in his arms, and Ignis had no intention of moving him. He stared at his face for a while, taking in the freckles that dotted his cheeks and nose. The soft expression on Prompto’s face made him wonder if he was dreaming, or if he was in a deeper sleep. He hoped that after suffering through the events of this storm, that Prompto was in a deep sleep.
Ignis wasn’t sure he knew what was happening between the two of them. Were they being drawn together because the other two were forcing this to happen to them? Or was something else there? Ignis had a feeling it was the latter, as he’d always found Prompto to be rather attractive. Getting to know him better through these extreme circumstances had created a fondness for the blond that Ignis wasn’t really ready to admit he had.
A soft moan left Prompto’s mouth, then a wince came over his face. Before he thought anything of it, Ignis lowered his head, and left a gentle kiss on Prompto’s lips. He didn’t know why he thought that was the best course of action, but the kiss seemed to have settled the blond down, no longer whimpering or wincing. Instead, soft snores left Prompto’s mouth, and a smile now tugged on his lips.
He closed his eyes, and could feel the gentle push back of Prompto’s lips against his own, making him wonder if Prompto had been awake just then, or if it had been an involuntary action. Ignis hoped that it wasn’t an involuntary action, as he would like for it to happen again. But since Prompto was now sound asleep, he knew that it would have to wait.
They both woke up in the morning, still holding onto each other. Prompto yelped as he pulled himself away, and proceeded to fall onto the floor. Ignis yawned, then shook his head. “That is a terrible way to get up, Prompto.” He rubbed his hands over his face, then grabbed his glasses, which he had set behind his pillow the night before. “Good morning.”
“G-G-Good morning!” Prompto jumped up from the ground. “Hey, so random question for you.”
“Yes?” He sat up, and stretched a little. “What is it?”
“Did you kiss me last night??”
“Why do you ask?” Ignis didn’t say yes or no, but was more or less curious as to what made Prompto ask.
“I swear, I thought you kissed me last night. I was having this awful nightmare, and was struggling to get out of it, when I felt you kiss me.”
Ignis smoothed down his shirt before standing up, coming face to face with the blond. “Did your nightmare cease?”
“Yes.” Prompto nodded his head.
“Then I would say that is all that matters.” He walked past him, and headed to the door. “Come along, Prompto. We should head back to the 3 Z’s Motel. It seems the storm has passed.”
“But you didn’t answer my question.”
Turning around, he looked right into Prompto’s eyes. “I did. And I would like to do it again, with your permission.”
“Y-You have it!”
He crossed the few short steps it took to reach Prompto, then lowered his head and brushed a light kiss against Prompto’s lips. “This will do, for now. Let’s go see our friends, hmm?”
“Okay, Iggy.”
Prompto’s hand found his, which he was happy to give to him. Their fingers laced together as they approached the chocobo paddock, then hopped onto their mounts together. He knew that they had some talking to do, but it could wait, for now. They had to get back to their friends, and continue on their journey.

blue lights, late nights
Rating: 13 & up ? (One whole swearword is present) Word count: 1500 Media/pairing: ffxv, promnis
Prompts || 19. “why are you calling me at two in the morning?”, 84. “i had a nightmare and… i just wanted to see if you were okay.”, 42. “do you have nightmares often?”
Ignis found himself jolting awake in the middle of the night, caught completely off guard by the sound of his phone ringing on the nightstand. Hastily blinking the sleep from his eyes, he sat up and leaned over to grab his buzzing phone, quirking up an eyebrow at the name staring back at him on the bright screen. Prompto? he thought, puzzled. Deciding that it was probably best not to keep him waiting, he tapped the button to answer it and held it to his ear with a somewhat lazy hand, allowing himself to shift onto his back once more.
"Prompto, why on earth are you calling me at two in the morning?" he began, his voice rough with drowsiness, but not unkind. He never did find it easy to be truly angry at him; especially here lately, but that was an entirely different can of worms all on it's own. Suddenly, there was a hushed sniffle from Prompto's end, and he felt anxious energy quickly clear out the sluggish fog in his brain. Prompto rarely even texted him, much less called him. Something's wrong.
"Sorry," he could tell he was trying to keep his erratic breathing under control as he spoke, sounding strangely broken in a way that sent his nerves alight with an icy fire, "I was just--uh--d-did I wake you up?"
"No," he immediately lied, knowing that he didn't sound the least bit convincing, but he just wanted to do something to try to put him at ease. "Is everything alright? Do I need to come by your apartment?" There was a short pause, and he heard him take in a surprised breath.
"No, no--you don't have to do that, Igs, really, I just--" he gave a shaky sigh, and he could hear a quiet, almost distant shuffling. "I-I'm really sorry, it's late, and you're a busy guy who needs sleep, and I shouldn't have called you--"
"Prompto, what is wrong?" he urged. There was a worrying amount of silence after he spoke, and for a brief moment Ignis wondered if he'd hung up and was about to run out the door with his car keys in hand--but then he heard another quiet sniff, and his heart jolted in his chest.
"I...uhm..." He let Prompto gather himself in silence, simply praying that he didn't end the call in misplaced embarrassment. Another sniffle. "I just...I had a nightmare, and…I just wanted to see if you were okay." Relief flooded him like a refreshingly cool wave, and he let himself relax against the mattress. Though there was still a small, nagging part in the back of his mind that was worried about the fact that Prompto was apparently stressed enough to have nightmares about him. "...wow, that sounds so much dumber now that I've said it out loud, okay, uhm, I-I'm gonna hang up and let you go back to sleep now--"
"I'll be there in fifteen minutes," he quickly cut him off before he could end the call. As he took the phone away from his ear, he heard Prompto let out a squawk that sounded vaguely like a shocked, 'wait, what?!'
Some ten minutes passed, and then Ignis was knocking on the door to Prompto’s apartment, now wearing a simple grey t-shirt and slightly faded jeans. I’m not exactly going out to some high-profile meeting, had been his justification to himself as he hastily tossed on whatever articles of clothing that he saw first, having been impatient to just get in his car and drive. "Prompto, it's me," he gently called out after a short while, but still got no response. With a determined huff, he reached into his pocket and grabbed the key that he'd taken just before leaving his own flat and unlocked the door himself, quietly shutting it behind him before making his way deeper inside. "Prompto?" he called again, voice still just as hushed as before. He wasn't even entirely sure why; something about the situation just made him feel like he needed to have a soft disposition. He finally ended up at his bedroom door, cracking it open and peering in. Thankfully, Prompto had his blinds up, so the full moon could cast down it's pale light and allow him to actually see into the room. His friend was a miserable-looking lump on his bed, all but his fluffy hair covered by blankets. There was a tissue box and several crumpled pieces of paper strewn around the vicinity of the bed, and he realized with a sinking feeling that Prompto must've been like this for some time before he called him. He stepped fully into the room, closing the door behind him. "There was no point in not answering the door," he began quietly, so as to not startle him, "you know I have a spare key." I was coming in here one way or another, he decidedly didn't say.
"...yeah," was all he said, just before Ignis was about to assume that he wasn't going to reply. His heart suddenly ached with overwhelming pity, and before he even realized what he was doing he walked over and sat down on the edge of the bed. He was silent for a little while, simply thinking. Then, he turned his head to look down at him, observing his melancholy expression over his shoulder.
"Do you have nightmares often?" he gently inquired. Some more silence--though, admittedly, noticeably shorter this time around.
“Yeah," he sniffed. Completely on auto-pilot, Ignis reached over to place a soothing hand on Prompto's shoulder, rubbing slow circles with his thumb.
"About me? Or just in general?"
"...I didn't used to," he finally admitted after a moment. "I used to get the usual, boring nightmares; teeth falling out, monsters chasing me, falling off of skyscrapers. Y'know. But, then..." He had to pause, bringing a hand up from under the blanket to hide his face as his sniffling grew more frequent and his voice wavered, "lately, it...it's just been horrible stuff happening to you, and--and I can't fᴜcking sleep because of it." It sounded like it physically pained him to talk about it, having to choke back a sob by the end. Ignis was immediate in his response, shifting to be closer to him and rubbing comfortingly at his side as he shivered.
"Shhh, easy," he soothed. "It's alright, Prompto. Dreams are just that; dreams. Nothing is going to happen, and I'm not going anywhere any time soon." He thanked whatever god that happened to be listening that his words seemed to calm him. After a long minute, Prompto sluggishly rolled over onto his back, staring up at the ceiling. His eyes were still watery, but at least he was no longer struggling for breath between crying. With the blanket now tucked down to his stomach due to his shift of position, Ignis placed his hand on his chest and let him play with it since he didn't have his bracelets on to distract himself. He secretly relished the feeling of his fingertips idly tracing over his skin and squishing at his palm. "Now, what on earth has been stressing you out so terribly that you would have such awful nightmares about me?" he asked after a couple of quiet minutes. Prompto weakly shrugged.
"Nothing, really," he murmured, his voice hoarse. "I just...worry. Subconsciously, I guess. I don't go out of my way to do it, I just...do. It's how my brain is wired, y'know?"
"Is there something in particular that you worry about?"
"No," he answered, far too quickly, and when Ignis gave him a softly surprised look he scrambled to reiterate, "well, I mean, y--uh...maybe. I-I don't know," he mumbled, sounding confused with himself. "It's just dumb, anxiety-driven worry. Like, deep down I know that it won't realistically happen, but now that I've thought about it it keeps me up at night. 'What-ifs,' that kinda stuff." His heartstrings pulled painfully at his words, wishing that he could give him some small semblance of peace from his own haunting thoughts. Suddenly, an idea struck him.
"Prompto, come here," he gently coaxed after a pondering moment, reaching with his free hand to grab his shoulder and suggest for him to sit up. He looked stunned as he did so, though after a few seconds of the gears turning in his head he finally seemed to figure out what he was thinking and leaned forward to wrap his arms around Ignis' neck. He couldn't believe just how right it felt to wrap his own arms around his sides and rest his chin on his shoulder. Had he really never hugged Prompto before? ...he felt so heartbreakingly fragile.
"How come you're so nice, Iggy?" he sleepily whispered after a good minute, nuzzling down to bury his face against the side of his neck and squeezing him just a bit tighter. "You're like, the nicest guy in the whole world." Because I love you. He had to swallow the invisible knot in his throat so he could answer him.
"Who's to say," he replied instead.

Hey can I get some cute promnis headcanons please? (Maybe with chubby prompto? >:3 )
Prompto’s really good at calming down Ignis when he’s too high strung. Not because Prompto is a chill person (he really isn’t), but because Prompto panicking about the same thing makes Ignis realize there’s nothing to worry about
You wouldn’t know it from looking at him, but Ignis is one of those guys who likes to lay on butts. When Prompto gains a little weight and he lays on his stomach, he runs the risk of Ignis using his butt as a pillow
As a gay who can’t drive, Prompto really lucked out when he started dating a gay who loves to drive
Prompto likes to wear Ignis’s big sweaters after he’s worn them a few times because they smell like Ignis, and they’re always so soft. Ignis has bought him his own sweaters from the same place, but Prompto swears that Ignis’s sweaters are somehow warmer
Sometimes Ignis lets Prompto sit on his shoulders when they go to a concert or something
“You’re so cute, Prompto.” “That’s gay.” “We’re literally dating.”
