The Price of Failure
The greatest mistake done was not dying for him. It was allowing themselves to retreat before the battlelines of the Emperor. As his hammer crackled and hurled lightning against the Fox-King. Claws and talons tearing daemonic flesh and noble griffin barding. Man and beast against devil.
And when the Emperor's life was within his claws, only to be torn by a foreseen ferocity, Ludwig's rage was ungodly.
It took the mountains and boiled the sea. Within his palace of flesh-gold, the daemons who served as his retinue suffered unlike any other. Foolish was it to fail a Child of Slaanesh, for their creativity in the measures of pain was unfathomable.
For they learned, immortality have its own horror and in the Realms of Chaos - time had no meaning and eternity was cruel under a wrathful master. What emerged from Ludwig's Parlour was horror shambling and groaning, to serve him still and earn the respise of release.
Their gods could not reclaim their mangled forms, bound by the Eightspurred Wheel and cursed by Ludwig's weaved song. There is no escape...until he deems it so.

Prinxiety Week: Extra Prompts!
You all voted, and Mythical Creatures was the winner! So here you are, the first of the final three extra prompts.
The rest you can read on ao3 here!
This is a retelling of the story Titeliture, which in itself is a Swedish retelling of the story Rumpelstiltskin.
Virgil is the miller (changed to an old woman in this specific retelling) ‘s son.
Roman is the prince
@prinxietyweek
There was once a poor woman who had only a son, and the boy was so lazy that he refused to do any work whatsoever. This caused his mother no end of grief. The woman tried time and again to teach her son how to spin, but it was of no use. Finally, the mother made the boy sit on the thatched roof of their cottage with a spinning wheel. "Now the whole world can see what a lazy, good-for-nothing son you are," said the woman.
That very afternoon, the king's son came riding by the house on his way home from the hunt. He was surprised to see such a beautiful young man sitting on a cottage roof. He asked the boys mother why he was there.
The woman was tongue-tied. How could she tell him the truth? "O-o-oh," she stammered. "My son, Virgil, is on the roof because ... because he is such a clever boy, that he can spin the long straw on the roof into pure gold."
"Aha!" cried the prince. "If what you say is true, and your son can spin gold from straw, he must come to the palace and be my bride." So Virgil came down from the roof and mounted the prince's horse behind him, and off they rode.
When they reached the palace, Roman led Virgil to a small tower room, and gave him a spinning wheel and a great tall pile of straw, and said, "If you can spin this into gold by the time the sun rises, you shall be my bride. But if you have deceived me, you will pay with your life."
The poor boy was terribly afraid, for of course he had never learned to spin thread, let alone gold. There he sat, his head in his hands, crying bitter tears, when the door to the room slowly opened and in walked an odd-looking little man. He greeted him in a friendly way and asked why he was crying.
"I have good reason to cry," answered Virgil.. "The Prince has ordered me to spin this straw into gold before dawn, or I shall pay with my life. No one can spin straw into gold."
"No one?" asked the little man. He held out a glove that sparkled and shimmered in the candlelight. "As long as you wear this, you will be able to spin it all into gold. But there is a price for using my glove. Tomorrow night I shall return and ask you to guess my name. If you cannot guess it, you must marry me and be my wife."
In his despair, Virgil made the bargain. As soon as the little man disappeared, he put on the glove, and sat and spun as if he had been spinning his whole life. By sunrise he had spun all the straw into the finest gold.
Great was the joy of everyone in the palace that the prince had found a bride who was so beautiful and so skillful. The boy did not rejoice, though, but sat by the window and strained to think what the little man's name might be.
When the prince returned from a hunt, he sat down, and to amuse his bride, Roman began to tell him of his adventures that day. "I saw the strangest thing in the forest," he said. "I came to a clear-ing, and there was a little old man dancing round and round a juniper bush, singing the most peculiar song."
"What did he sing?" asked Virgil.
Roman replied,
"My bride must sew a wedding dress, for he used my magic glove, and he will never, ever guess Titeliture's the name of his love."
Virgil smiled and clapped his hands, and asked the prince to sing the little man's song over and over so that he wouldn't forget. And when the prince left him alone, and night fell, the door to his chamber opened. There stood the little old man, grinning from ear to ear. Before he could say a word, Virgil held out the glove, saying, "Here is your glove ... Titeliture!"
When the little man heard Virgil speak his name, he shrieked and he spun around and around, and then, with a bang and a great puff of smoke, he shot up through the air and dis-appeared, taking part of the tower roof with him.
Virgil and Roman were married, and never again did he have to spin, because, of course, spinning is not proper work for a princess.

🌾🪺🏯
Emperor Lan Wangji never allowed his cleaning staff to remove the little nests birds built up in the nooks and crannies of his palace. He specifically instructed them not to bother those that had little eggs or chicks in them already, and nobody dared disobey such high authority.
Granted, a lot of the court officials did end up having to clean their robes of bird waste a bit more often than they had expected, but it wasn't as if they could protest against the emperor. Not to mention, it wasn't only him that enjoyed the feathered ones' company, the young crown prince did as well. In fact, there was a running conspiracy in the palace that little prince Yuan was teaching the birds which officials gave his father the most grief and they would ever so randomly swarm said officials and peck at them viciously. Of course, there was never proof of such a thing, yet coincidences were many.
One day, as harvest season was nearing its close, prince Yuan and his father inspected the royal reserves, the emperor teaching his son how to check crops and why it was important to save a portion of it after every season.
Just then, a new caravan wheeled through the gates, a rather attractive man holding the reins of the seemingly troublesome donkey that dragged the load behind him. Several other men walked behind him, carrying various produce.
The man wore simple robes, likely one of the peasants that either grew or helped harvest the crops for the palace, and in one hand he twirled a young rice plant, leaves still green, as he lectured the others.
"We're leaving all this harvest in that big barn over there, and then we have to bargain with that stuck up official for prices. I'll take Wen Qing and go, the rest of you make sure not to damage anything, or we won't even get enough to buy radishes for the winter!"
The other men agreed loudly, and the group split up. The man left in the direction of the reserves office with a lady, while the rest approached the barn. The emperor made himself scarce, not wanting these hardworking men to bother with bows and platitudes, instead waiting around the reserves office for that man to emerge.
"A-die, why are we hiding?" Prince Yuan asked, cowering behind his father's ornate robes.
"We are not hiding. We are observing."
"What are we observing from behind this big wall? I can't even see anything!"
Several minutes later, the reserves officer and the man seemed to be arguing quite intensely, with the officer nearly kicking the man and his companion out.
"A-Yuan, send in a pigeon."
The boy giggled silently and waved at a nearby tree, wherefrom five pigeons descended like god-sent arrows. They swarmed the officer just as he was about to spew an insult, and the laughter that escaped that beautiful man was enough to make Lan Wangji's heart flutter.
"That's a sign from the heavens!" he exclaimed, "Give us the price we asked for and I think the birds will leave you alone!"
"Fine!" the officer agreed, trying to prevent a pigeon from biting his nose off. "Fine, I'll give you your price!"
A-Yuan waved at his pigeons and they left their target, returning into the tree.
The officer mumbled something about witchcraft as the man laughed and left with a spring in his step.
Emperor Lan Wangji watched him walk out.
A white dove landed on his shoulder.

The Fire That Burns Within- N.L x fem! reader Chapter Four
Masterlist
all right! After a day of delay, here’s the fourth chapter! I tried to go really in depth with all of this so if any of the math I’ve done is wrong, I apologize. The hope with this fic is that it’ll be all posted in the next nine or ten days, provided that no more delays occur
Fic type- this is hurt/no comfort (hurt with an angsty ending)
Warnings- mentions of debt, mentions of death, there is one direct mention of what the king did to genya and a use of the word rapist, (y/n directly tells nikolai his father is a rapist)
Tumblr media
“To start, your great line of kings is the entire reason Ravka is broke,” You said a week and a half later. It’d been a week of half-baked attempts on Nikolais part to get you to like him, and at that point, you were just ready to make your disdain for his bloodline clear as water. “They emptied the war treasury and the countries funds and fucked over every single person in Ravka at that time. The fact that your father has continued to dig Ravka deeper in it’s pit of debt is not exactly a point won for your bloodline, is it?”
You’d been going on a walk through the corridors of the Spinning Wheel, Nikolai a respectable distance behind you. If he ever took another step closer, you took two further away. You refused to let yourself be beguiled by him, be won over by his charms.
“I knew that was going to be your first object of disdain,” Nikolai said. “However, what makes you think you can bring that up if you have no offerable solutions for us to get out of debt with the other countries?”
“How much debt has the Lantsov line accrued with each nation in the time since they took the reins?”
“About thirty million with each country, and I’m saying that in confidence,” he said, a warning tone clipping the end of his sentence. You liked your home too much to ever tell any spies how much debt he’d accrued with the countries his bloodline had borrowed from, though you did understand the concern. You would’ve said it the same way, even if it pained you to admit you would’ve done the same as Nikolai had.
“A hundred and fifty million coin?” You asked, not at all shocked by the number. “My theories about you Lantsovs pushing your luck even when there is none left are correct indeed.”
“A solution would be preferrable to the bite of your sarcasm.” Nikolai said, his voice a bit clipped in his irritation.
“Get volunteers,” you said. “Hold events, galas, dinners. Charge money for a ticket or a seat. Put the money to the debts you owe. Events wherein you can host a crowd of 10,000–though, considering the debt, I do doubt you have the money to rent a space so large–can have thirty thousand in coin going towards the debts if you pay them off one by one and charge thirty coin for a ticket or a seat. Putting a price on the food you serve or adding that to the ticket pricing can have you at 150,000 coin after one event if the food is of good quality and good taste. If you held an event every two months–”
“I could have the first of the debts paid off in roughly a year and a half,” Nikolai cut. “All of the debts themselves could be paid off in seven years, maximum. You’re a genius.”
“Big events aren’t the only way,” you said. “You could start a couple of things in the city, a couple of city festivals. Live music, dancing, kvas and tea from golden samovars. Less would be charged for a ticket but it’s an easy way to make 10,000 kruge and the money piles quickly if you hold multiple events throughout spring and summer. Festivals weekly from May through to early September would land you a lot. If you went from the first of May to the fifteenth of September, that’s twenty three weeks and 200,000 thousand kruge if you can manage to have ten thousand people gathering for live music every single week. It’s a stretch, but it could work with proper planning and correlation with all of Ravkas cities.”
“Anything else?”
“Palace tours,” you suggested. “You’re to be the king and the tourists will find it a fun item to check off their itineraries. You can overcharge for them if you like, too. You’ll be the king. People will expect it.”
“Thank you for your insight.”
“I resent myself for giving it to you.”
“Here I thought you were finally starting to like me,” Nikolai said. You scoffed.
“I would never,” you said. “I detested your father, I detested Vasily, I detest the Darkling, and I will detest you in turn.”
“The Darkling is not my relative.”
“He worked closely with your rapist father,” you said. “Just because you are not related to him does not mean your family has not worked closely with him. I detested your father, I detest the Darkling, and I will detest you in turn.”
Nikolai laughed. “And if you come to work with me in the next few years?”
“I will not,” you said. “And if I do, then that is to mean that I will have changed my mind based upon the actions of one Lantsov compared to a line of at least twenty five of them. Thinking of it now makes me think that the woman I will be–provided that I do decide to work with or for you in any capacity–will have turned out to be quite the magnificent fool.”
You turned, caught a glimpse of the devilishly handsome smirk. “You speak like him,” he said. “the Darkling.”
It was a jab. It was designed to hurt you.
Still, even though you were determined that it would not, the words hurt like a knife being plunged into your chest and killing you instantly.
For a moment, you were a girl of seventeen, one of the Darklings charges, one of Genya Safins closest friends and a girl blinded by what she thought was greatness.
You were a girl who had seen so much and had managed to live through more than that even still.
You were a girl who did not know that the Darkling wanted to use fear as his weapon, not respect, not admiration or love or the adoration of the world en masse.
You were a seventeen year old girl who hated Nikolai Lantsov and daydreamt about killing his father when you were meant to be training with Zoya. You were the girl who would’ve shattered and killed the prince the moment you heard the words fall from his mouth.
But, you came back to yourself. You were not a girl blinded by percieved greatness or the Darklings looks, the mystery in his darkness. You were not a girl who thought the Darkling would find a way to destroy the Fold and rejoice in his effort when it was done.
No. You were Y/N L/N, a twenty year old Inferni, and you wanted to die.
“Please do not draw that comparison again,” you whispered, a part of you shattering internally. A deep pain had settled in your stomach, nausea crawling through your chest and warming your skin. “I could not bear it if you did.”
You’d rushed to your rooms before Nikolai could utter a response, had objected to curl up into your bed and cry silently until you fell asleep.

Uther Pendragon builds Camelot with swords and ashes. He fights, he conquers, he wins, he rules. For twenty years, his iron fist expands into the surrounding five kingdoms. He maintains a steady peace against the dark forces of magic which killed his wife. But twenty years is a long time, and Uther’s years have made him weak. Opportunistic rebels attack him during the anniversary of the start of his conquest, and leave the future of his reign uncertain.
His council assumes a regency, but as the days pass, Uther’s return to power seems more unlikely. Sharks surround Camelot and factions begin to build around the two most likely contenders.
Arthur Pendragon knows the weight of duty. As the king’s only son, his entire life rests on the order of things. He is a single spoke of an old, sturdy wheel that will spin on forever. Uther’s crown is his by right. No amount of wishful thinking will change that. When the fight for control of the crown begins, Arthur finds a wheel run ragged with the bodies of Camelot’s citizens trampled beneath it and betrayal in the form of family. All he wants is the return of his beloved sister and peace for his people.
Morgana Pendragon longs for her own sense of duty. Confined to the palace as Uther Pendragon’s bastard daughter, Morgana is not quite a princess and more than just a lady. Consequentially, the throne has never been a desire of hers, but the execution of a druid in Camelot’s dungeons reveals a hidden part of Morgana’s identity. The not-quite princess is left scrambling. Uther’s state leaves an opening for a regent—one capable of breaking the wheel. If only she could trust Arthur to be the hammer of that destruction.
Morgause Le Fay lives beyond the concern of duty. The last living child of The Earl Le Fay, she arrives in Camelot intent on resolving the issue of the regency and leaving behind the site of her father’s greatest sadness. A letter from her deceased mother changes everything. Morgause has a sister, one as magical as her, but embroiled in the political schemes of the Pendragons. For her mother, Morgause throws her sword into the melee, and finds herself struggling between the sister she loves and the young man who reminds her so much of a queen she once knew.
Merlin Emrys runs from duty. The druids say he is meant to be the other half to a great king. His is the restoration of magic to the land. Yet Merlin sees no great kings near him, just a spoiled prince and a lady with a heart of gold. An accidental rescue places him at the heart of Camelot’s palace hierarchy and shows him the Prince of Camelot might just be the regent he’s looking for. Arthur needs his help, and if working with the prince can lead to the return of magic, Merlin finds their partnership to be an acceptable price.
Schemes abound, worsened by the crafty maneuvering of Lady Morgana’s maid, Guinevere Smith. The daughter of a blacksmith, Gwen knows a thing or two about making hammers. But she knows much more about the kindness within Morgana’s heart. Gwen knows the palace better than anyone, and in the battle for the crown of Camelot, the will of the people may just win above all else.
Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown, but uneasier lies the battle for the crown.
Or: I just started watching Succession and thought this would be an interesting fanfic.

The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 22 - The Price of the Ring
(THIS PROJECT IS SPOILER FREE! No spoilers past the chapter you click on. Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For the link index and a primer on The Wheel of Time, read this one! Like what you see? Send me a Ko-Fi.)
(Flame icon) In which we get a scene that echoes back to another that came before.
PERSPECTIVE: Egg is only a short way from Verin's rooms when Sheriam finds her and says it's time for her Accepted test. She leads her down to the room with the three arches, and gives her the same speech she gave Nyn last book. Egg undresses to go through, and Alanna, there to represent the Green Ajah, says there's some kind of resonance or echo in the arches, she can't identify from where. Sheriam asks if it's a problem, and Alanna says no, she's just never heard of that happening before.(1)
The first time is for what was, the way will come but once. Egg raises her head to Rand talking about a peddler with strange news. She's rocking a cradle with a child... her daughter, Joiya. She asks Rand to tell his strange news, and he says the rest of the world seems to be caught up in a war with some funny folk, calling themselves the Sanchan or something. Egg almost remembers.
Rand's getting headaches, and strange things happen when he does. He has another now, but as Egg moves to soothe him, the silver arch appears. She takes a step toward it, then cries out that no, this is what she wants, why can't she have this, too? Rand gets up to ask her what she's talking about, but he falls to the ground, his headache worse than ever before.(2) It's the hardest thing Egg's ever had to do to keep walking toward the arch.
The second time is for what is. Egg is in a dusty silk dress, in the Royal Palace of Andor. The whole city of Caemlyn is in ruins. Trollocs, Darkfriends, and Myrddraal prowl, searching for "him". She runs through the rubble and finds Rand pinned by a beam. It's all he can do to hold the madness at bay, if he gives an inch it will take him over. He gestures at a dagger, and tells her to kill him. She can't! He says the Myrddraal and Dreadlords will turn him to the dark, he can't fight them if he's mad. She looks over her shoulder and sees the arch. She has to refuse him and walk toward it, though he cries out for her.
As Sheriam guides her to the next arch, Egg mentions that "he" said Myrddraal and Dreadlords could turn him to the Shadow. Sheriam almost stumbles, and says that the custom is not to speak of what happens inside the ter'angreal. Egg asks if it's true, and Sheriam says it's not a widely known fact, and she shouldn't ever have to learn it, but yes, it takes thirteen Darkfriends who can channel - the Dreadlords - and thirteen Myrddraal. But it hasn't been done since the Trolloc Wars. Egg comments that with Liandrin and the others, they make thirteen. Sheriam says she should forget that.(3)
The third time is for what will be. Egg stares into the mirror, surprised at the ageless smoothness of her face, and by the striped stole around her shoulders. She's the Amyrlin Seat here. Her Keeper, Beldeine, comes up behind her, her stole green, meaning that must be what Ajah Egg chose before the raising. The "way back will come but once" whisper gets cut off, for a new whisper: Thirteen Darkfriends.(4)
The Keeper leads Egg to a great hall, scared to her toenails. It's the Hall of the Tower, with all the Sitters, representatives of the Ajahs. Elaida is one, and calls for "him" to be brought in. Rand is in chains and Elaida calls for the pronouncement that he should be gentled, as can only happen here. Egg hesitates, and Elaida cues a coup.(5) Egg gets knocked in the head, but awakens before they cut her off from the Source. She counts thirteen Aes Sedai, and thirteen Myrddraal, and loses her shit, killing the Myrddraal and knocking out the Dreadlords.
She finds Beldeine, who says the Dreadlords stilled her, forced her to betray Egg. But what can Egg do now? She says she never held the Oath Rod,(6) and goes on a Mission(tm) to find and save Rand. As she's getting to the open Traitor's Court, planning to use balefire, whatever that is, to distract them, the "way back will come" message comes back, startling her, and she turns to see the arch, wavering in and out of reality, and she can hear the Aes Sedai on the other side fighting to keep it open. With a scream of rage that she once again can't save Rand, she throws herself at it.
Light plucked her apart fiber by fiber, sliced the fibers to hairs, split the hairs to wisps of nothing. All drifted apart on the light. Forever.(7)

(1) What's different about this? Only that Egwene is carrying that little stone ring ter'angreal… but surely that shouldn't affect the arches? Then again, for all the Aes Sedai confidence in these rituals, there's obviously a lot they don't know about. They didn't know what most of the ter'angreal the Black Ajah defectors with Liandrin took could do, and if nobody's seen the stone ring in almost five hundred years, why would anyone have tested it in the room with the arches, which are only used to raise novices to Accepted? What do you think these objects could have in common? (2) Rand here, in this AU, is beginning to channel involuntarily, and his wilder sickness seems to be playing out as we saw it develop in book 1. (3) And Sheriam's right, isn't she, from her own perspective? Egg ought to keep her focus on her studies and the Tower, not on her old flame and the world at large and the defection of thirteen women who almost incriminated the Wondergirls by default. (4) Curious. Nynaeve also got some deviance in what she was led to expect. Do you think most of the arch journeys are different from what the ritual explanations provide, or are the Wondergirls just that special? (5) Do you think Elaida is Black Ajah in the waking world, too? Do you think her ambitions could lead her to participate in such a horrifying breach of protocol, if the motivation were right? Do the answers to those two questions depend on each other to be true, in your opinion? (6) Shouldn't that be impossible? How would Egg have managed it? It's funny enough that her "what is yet to come" shows her being Amyrlin, after it's been said a half dozen times that she could be someday, but this seems like a stretch, doesn't it? Even in the dream of the arches, she's not sure how she managed it. (7) I sure hope she made it or we've just wasted an awful lot of POV chapters. Well, not wasted, if she dies now we HAVE learned quite a bit through her perspective… but surely there were other ways to convey that information instead of using a character who was about to die?

For my first request, can you write a oneshot featuring Yasuhiro and a woman reader in an Aladdin AU please? I imagine the two as street rats who go about their day scamming people and enjoying the sights of the kingdom together. What do you think?
sure thing, sorry this was so late!
(YASUHIRO X FEM! READER - BUY ONE GET NONE PAY FULL PRICE~!)
YASUHIRO X FEM! READER - BUY ONE GET NONE PAY FULL PRICE~!
"Are you sure this is worth what you're selling?" The man said, standing across the old run down stand. "Totally sure! The price is fair considering how expensive these things usually go around for!" Yasuhiro said, upbeat as he held out the item. "Okay, 30 coins, you said?" "Yes!" "Have a nice purchase!" Yasuhiro said before putting the coins in a jar, next the stack of multiple items he claimed were on sale. "He'll never know.." Yasuhiro muttered to himself, before hearing footsteps in his direction "Hey, honey, what did you find?" Yasuhiro asked, seeing his S/O appear after going to search for some junk they could sell.
"I hit the jackpot! Babe, Look at what I found." S/O said excitedly holding up a bag with some coins and a piece of bread, although not much, this was a treasure considering their way of living, still, the couple remained a strong and happy couple through thick and thin.
"All right! Since we've found ourselves such a lucky catch, we might as well go and buy something for ourselves, and enjoy the scenery while we're at it." Yasuhiro said, grabbing S/O's hand and the wagon handle, pulling out double wheels on the stand as they started riding the stand. "Wow, the starts look so beautiful.." S/o said, completely content with this moment. "Yeah, but not as beautiful as you." Yasuhiro whispered, kissing S/O on the cheek as they continued to ride the stand, looking at the palace. Being completely comfortable with each other.

Hey, hey! Again, sorry that this is late, but I hope you enjoy! Have a nice day/ night/ ect!

@normaltothemax: can you stay in my room tonight? i don't want to be alone. (Lucy :((((( ) — GARDEN OF EARTHLY BODIES STARTERS
his hesitation is fucking shameful — a selfish little wince at the thought of crashing in that uncomfortable corner chair and feeling it in every joint the next morning; of staying up to watch the antichrist drift unhappily off to dark and deadly dreamland, just in case there's a nightmare lurking there that he can't wake up from. a twinge of discomfort at the thought of bearing witness to exactly how scary this shite must be to a kid who can't choose not to experience it.
there's just something so much safer about being able to claim ignorance of circumstance, about stumbling in halfway through the nightmare instead of lying in wait for it. like he can pretend to be some passing good samaritan instead of the bloke who has to figure out all the hard questions, like whether it's possible to save lucy from his fate.
or, solution pending, figure out a way to stop him.
' yeah, la, sure. i'm 'ere. ' fuck a crisis of anticipation, fuck how badly his back is going to hurt: a scared kid is asking him to stay. he's going to fucking stay.
he takes two steps in, feeling like he's just exposed the whole of his beating heart to the void, before wheeling sharply around, finger raised — hold that thought — and beelining it to his own room. there, he strips the bed of blankets and sheets, stacks on as many pillows as he can find, and by the time he hauls the whole mess back to dump on the floor with a satisfied huff, he almost feels enough like a person again to smile.
' price of admission, though: you n'me, we're makin' the finest fffflippin' blanket fort you've ever bloody seen. 'cos that chair over there makes me creak, and do i look like the sodding tin man to you? don't even have to get up f'you don't want to, just . . . point me where to put what, eh? '
you're a dab hand at playing the distraction in a pinch, cheryl had told him once, hands planted on her hips in exasperation, while he did magic tricks to feed his three year-old niece the peas that she'd been wholly content to fling at the wall not thirty seconds prior. helps t'be more childish than the children, i expect.
helps to remember what it's like, wanting to build up palace walls to keep the dragons out, he thinks now, holding up a sheet like a sail and hoping lucy will put a good wind in it instead of an ill one. and to not mind being the walls, if no architects apply.

off the precipice (懸崖勒馬)
6: They Sell the Moon Here
READER DISCRETION IS STRONLGLY ADVSIED; Please read the masterlist first before proceeding.
Tumblr media
Childe was absolutely horrible at driving. Okay, perhaps that was a tad bit exaggerated.
His driving skills weren’t so horrible that it would have sent both him and Lumine to Celestia. Quite the contrary, even. Childe drove like he was a grandmother. That is, if grandmothers even knew how to drive—delicate, slow, and incredibly forgetful. In only ten minutes, they’ve already gotten lost not only twice, but four times.
What was supposed to be a fifteen-minute drive from the Northland Palace to Yiyan Temple was dragged into thirty. And, in all the time they’ve wasted driving in what seemed to be circles, they have not once left the Snezhnayan settlements of Feiyun Slope.
By that time, Lumine had already finished the entire jiānbǐng Kunikuzushi had given her before they had left 1. She knew she was going to be late if Childe takes another turn leading to a dead end.
“How are we even lost?” Lumine asks him, crumpling the parchment paper her breakfast had been wrapped in. “We live and work here.”
“Sorry, dorogaya,” Childe says, giving her an apologetic smile. He turns his eyes back onto the road, finger gripping tighter onto the steering wheel. “I’m really sure this next turn should take us back out into the main boulevard.”
“We’re not taking any more shortcuts, alright?” Lumine sighs, leaning against the window beside her. “If they get mad because I’m late, just know that I’m going to be blaming you.”
“You can’t just blame this entirely on me, dorogaya,” Childe huffs out. “I’ve never driven anyone—not even myself—to the Jade Chamber, not until today. I never had any reason to show up to headquarters unless Rosalyne physically drags me there… so these parts of the harbour are quite unfamiliar to me.”
Then why take shortcuts if you’re unfamiliar with the place? Lumine had wanted to ask him, but she decides to bite her tongue down instead.
Silence engulfs them in the car as Childe finally takes a turn leading out into the city's main boulevard. By some stroke of luck—or archons, by some miracle from the heavens, they finally arrive in front of Yiyan Temple. To say Lumine was relieved to see the long-standing temple was an understatement. If she could and wanted to, she would have hollered and cheered.
Childe smiled triumphantly to himself as he says, “Well, here we are, dorogaya. You better get in before they actually scold you, ‘no?”
Her eyes narrowed at the ginger beside her. She grumbles at him, begrudgingly saying her thanks, and unlocking the door to her side open. Before she could step out, Childe calls out to her, “Don’t murder the first man you see this time, dorogaya!”
Lumine does not give him the satisfaction of an answer. She frowns at him one more time—though it wasn’t really a frown of distaste—and then slams the car door right in his face. She wasn’t mad at him, really. It was just how they have always been since… forever.
She didn’t despise Childe for his antics per se; she literally grew up with the guy. She already knows the things he’d pull long before his eyes would even light up in mischief. Despising him was the last thing she could ever fathom doing. Childe, even when he would always be second to her brother, he was still one of her closest friends. Though admittedly, she did find him to be infuriating whenever he decides to screw around.
As she watches Childe drive off, Lumine lets out a sigh. She could only hope he doesn’t end up driving in circles once again. She shakes her head and turns to look back at Yiyan Temple, dusting the invisible dust off of her white qípáo.
Outside the temple was a newspaper stand, a young boy calling out to passers-by to buy them from him at a discounted price. As she walked up the steps of the temple, she could see the newest issue of the Liyue Daily. The headlines were printed in enlarged and bold letters; it would have been hard to miss.
KONSTANTIN ALEXEEV DIES
FROM A HEART ATTACK
Lumine rolls her eyes as she reads the headlines, but she hands the boy some mora to purchase the issue. She pulls the newspaper out of the stand in a swift motion and continues to hike up the steps. She flips the pages of the paper, scanning through the headlines, squinting at the words every so often.
Reading Liyuen wasn’t a struggle for Lumine, she had mastered the language long ago. Her problem, instead, was the way Liyue Daily issues were printed. The characters were always printed so small, she might as well not be able to read them.
As she skims through the articles, she wonders how the old people are even able to read any of the things written in these.
Just as Lumine was about to give up on reading the issue, another headline catches her attention. At this, her breath hitches and her heartbeat begins to pick up its pace. She fights the urge to mutter out a curse as she reads.
TWO FOUND DEAD
IN THE DARK ALLEY
In the article, they had written that both of the victims were foreigners: Snezhnayan and Inazuman. The report wasn’t entirely wrong, but Lumine had always thought of Tomo as Liyuen ever since he joined their ranks. He might have been Inazuman-born, but he had found a home in the harbour city… he was just as Liyuen as the locals.
The article ends with the date of the murders, and no further details were given other than that and the victims’ nationalities.
Lumine knew why the report was oddly vague this time around. Other than the fact that a member of the covert division was involved, said member was a known Inazuman defector. The Millelith would hold information from the media.
A small frown forms on her face when Lumine reaches the top of the steps. She folds the newspaper into halves and then forths. When she doesn’t see any disposal bin nearby, Lumine decides to stuff it into her purse. She walks over to an attendant standing by the side of the large double doors of the temple. He smiles politely at her as she approaches him.
“May the archons be with you, Xiǎo jiě.” He greets politely with a slight bow of his head. “My name is Bu’yun, is there anything I could help you with today?”
Lumine nods, “Good morning, Bu’yun. Do you sell the moon here?”
The attendant’s eyes widen in surprise before he smiles again at her. “Oh, oh—Of course! May I know what kind of moon you’d like to purchase?”
Lumine quickly racks her brain, trying to remember what Bu’yun could have meant—then her eyes light up in recognition. Which agent called for you?
“Rimechaser, please,” Lumine replies. She gives herself an imaginary pat on her shoulder.
“Ah, you must be Aster Xiǎo jiě. Very well,” Bu’yun says. He then gestures for Lumine to follow him, “Please, follow me.”
Bu’yun leads Lumine through the side pass of Yiyan Temple, and to the far back. When they reach the very back of the temple, he shows her an adepti art-powered lift. He waves his hand against something on the wall, and a jade platform descends from above.
“Welcome to Headquarters, Aster Dài lǐ,” Bu’yun says again, as he ushers her into the lift. “The lift will stop moving once it reaches the Jade Chamber. Please do not be afraid of falling as it ascends. The lift is made with adepti art, you will be safe.”
“Who should I look for once I get there?” Lumine asks before Bu'yun could move again.
“An attendant should be waiting for you there,” Bu’yun replies, waving his hand against the wall again. Lumine could see something glimmer in front of her, and she holds her hand out only to feel a barrier blocking her. “Good luck, Aster Dài lǐ. May the archons be with you.”
The lift begins to ascend, and Lumine gently taps her foot against the jade platform, waiting.
A soft chime resounds, and Lumine straightens her back as the glimmer appears again. She reaches her hand out, testing to see if passing through was possible. When her hand doesn’t bump into anything, she decides to step off the platform. As she steps out, another attendant greets her.
“Good Morning, welcome to Headquarters,” She greets. “You must be Viatrovna Xiǎo jiě? My name is Baiwen. Please follow me, I’ll show you to the conference room.”
Baiwen begins to walk ahead, her shoes clicking against the linoleum floors. “Have you eaten yet, Viatrovna Xiǎo jiě? If not, please do not worry. We will have breakfast served to you once the meeting begins.”
Baiwen stops in front of wooden double doors and knocks thrice before she pushes the doors open. She gestures for Lumine to enter, and so she does.
The first thing she notices in the room makes her jaw drop. It was her handler.
Kunikuzushi?
“Flies will enter your mouth if you don’t shut it,” Kunikuzushi says, leaning into the conference table. “What took you so long? You went out ten minutes before I did, and yet I still managed to arrive first.”
Lumine attempts to speak, but her voice doesn’t come out. She settles with looking at everyone else instead. Beidou, Ningguang… Zhongli? And… Xiao. Lumine clenches her fist slightly. She did not like the implications of this, and all she could do was hope for the best. Baiwen bows to Lumine one last time before she shuts the door behind her, leaving Lumine in the room with everyone else.
Beidou gently slaps the back of Kunikuzushi’s head, “Kunikuzushi,” Beidou warns Lumine’s handler. “Watch what comes outta that mouth of yours… we’re not with the Rings right now.”
“What’s going on?” Lumine asks, she furrows her brows at her handler and her gang leader, “I thought you said you didn’t know anything about this?”
Beidou only grins up at her, giving her a thumbs up.
Xiao scoffs, clearly unamused, “Well, you’re fashionably late.”
“No thanks to a certain ginger,” Lumine retorts, rolling her eyes. She sits down, “Childe got us lost on the road, and we went around in circles for thirty minutes.”
Ningguang raises a questioning brow at Beidou—her wife, “I thought you said Childe knows his way around the city?”
“He does!” Beidou says almost immediately, “The guy’s probably so sleepy his brain wasn’t working properly. I mean—it’s still too early in the morning, and I sent him out on patrol last night.”
“I don’t think it’s wise to have a sleepy man drive, it might have endangered both of them,” Zhongli suddenly comments, sippingfrom his cup of tea. Lumine holds back a chuckle. She then wonders if his and Childe’s date had pushed through.
“Okay, but what’s going on?” Lumine asks them again, “Does anyone mind filling me in?”
“We’ll be getting to that soon, Ying.” Ningguang clears her throat, sitting straight up. “I believe we should begin. This discussion will be quite lengthy, and I understand that we all have other matters to attend to.”
Ningguang gestures to Kunikuzushi, who immediately perks up. “Kunikuzushi, would you like to begin?”
He nods, standing from his seat. He does not speak yet, and starts handing everyone a folder each; he snaps his fingers, turning the lights off. A projector begins to whirr, a light reflecting on the wall. “We already know about the murders going around in the city, yes?”
Lumine grimaces as she flips through her copy of the folder, squinting as she sifted through the contents. The murders that had been going around in Liyue for a few months now… the one Tomo somehow got caught in. Her lips pursed. She suddenly remembers the article from the newspaper—there had been someone else with Tomo that died the same exact way as the others.
“There was a recent case, right?” Lumine asks, but she does not look up at Kunikuzushi yet. She was busy looking at the folder. It contained operation reports and photos, but she does not see anything that she didn’t already know. Until she comes across one particular photo—a photo of a glowing silver chain. This was new.
“Correct,” Kunikuzushi continues. “We’ve been suspecting the people behind The Abyssosque for a while now, but our suspicions weren’t enough to incriminate them…”
“But we have enough evidence to finally begin further investigations,” Ningguang finishes for him. “We sent Alioth and Kylin on an operation a few days ago—and it was tied to your operation, Ying.”
The projected image shifts into the photo of the glowing silver chain Lumine just saw.
“So what you’re saying is… the murders have something to do with that?” Xiao finally speaks up. “Versemonger told me Alioth already made connections about the murders… but how?”
“That’s where Viatrovna's operation comes in,” Beidou says, placing another folder on the table. Lumine recognised it. Stamped with the Snezhnayan seal and all, it was the same one she had stolen—or rather, retrieved from Mr Alexeev a day ago. “Alioth suggested that all the murders should have something significantly tied to people in The Abysossque, and it’s those chains. When we got the list of investors from Viatrovna, we immediately looked into them.”
Zhongli hums, “The investors… they’re the ones responsible for circulating these enchanted chains to Liyuen locals and foreigners alike.”
Ningguang nods grimly, “All the victims of the murders have two things in common—they did not have their heads on their corpses, and they had these chains on their persons when they were killed.”
“Do you think they’re tagging the targets through these chains?” Lumine asks.
“If that’s the case,” Xiao begins, crossing his arms. “Then we could already start making arrests. We can round up all the investors. We don’t have to prolong this anymore, do we?”
“It’s not that easy, Alatus,” Kunikuzushi says. He snaps his fingers again, and the lights switch back on. “Arresting them without figuring out why these murders are being carried out will only give them another chance to continue. Plus, the mastermind could flee before we could even get to the bottom of this.”
Zhongli nods, “Kunikuzushi is right; No live witness has even seen who the killer might be. We must act carefully lest this situation blows out of proportion even more.”
Lumine taps her fingers against the desk, “So… what do we already know and what else do we need to know?”
“Glad you asked that, Kid.” Beidou points to Lumine, “We already know that the victims are already tagged with those chains. We also know that The Abysossque has everything to do with this. The Abysossque is owned by a Khaenri’ahn billionaire who goes by the name Bothynus… who also happens to be our primary suspect for these murders.”
Lumine hears Xiao hum before he speaks, “Alright. Now about the geovishap in the room—what does this have to do with us?”
Ningguang and Beidou smile at this. Beidou speaks on her wife’s behalf, “The two of you are assigned to this case and you’re going to become one combined operative—Afterglow.”
“That wouldn't be necessary,” Xiao scoffs. “I can run this operation myself. Viatrovna can stay back and sit pretty.”
At his unsolicited comment, Lumine shoots him a glare, but she doesn't speak.
“Oh, it is imperative that you work together,” Zhongli explains. “This is not just any case where only one agent working on it will suffice.”
“It’s a long-term operation too,” Beidou adds.
“Not helping, My dear,” Ningguang mutters.
“For this operation, the both of you will be taking on new personas,” Kunikuzushi explains. He hands them another set of folders. Lumine guessed it was probably their new identities. “And you won’t be living alone or in headquarters.”
“Say that this operation does push through, where are we even going to live?” Xiao asks.
“A new estate is recently vacant in Yujing Terrace,” Zhongli says. “We’ve made the proper arrangements to secure the property for this operation.”
Lumine raises her brow, “Wait—you said property… one property?”
“Of course, the two of you would be living together for the duration of this operation.” The way Zhongli says it so nonchalantly makes Lumine’s eyes twitch slightly.
“Well—” Beidou says loudly, as she stands from her seat. “Congratulations on your marriage, Mr and Mrs Chen!”
Lumine snaps her head up at her superior, “I’m sorry, what?”
“Oh, weren’t we clear the first time?” Beidou asks again, “You’re getting married for this operation.”
