"You shouldn't play Palworld because they blatantly ripped off creature designs from Pokemon!"
Meanwhile the most iconic monster in one of the most important video games of all time and the grandfather of all first-person shooters:

initial palworld first impressions: - unreal logo at startup is not helping the unreal asset flip vibe lol - I was playing on controller and idk if this was a bug or just unfinished but they hadn't mapped the controller icons to the UI so I just had to trial and error every control which felt really bad - the audio design is like really bad. however my cat really responded positively to the noises of the cat pal - I know its so you can automate crafting but I keep forgetting to Acquire things I crafted and then suddenly have no pal orbs and have to run far as fuck back to my base where all my shit is - the fact that you can't pause is annoying as fuck. again, I get that this is for multiplayer but it drives me nuts because your hunger and stuff continues to tick down as youre afk. this didnt even bother me in elden ring which got shit for it but here it drives me up the wall - not really specific to the game but because you cant save I handed the controller to my gf so I could get a snack and she managed to fall down a big as fuck hole where drowning was the only escape option. so that was funny idk if that hole was supposed to be there or what - I dont like having to whallop the cute lil guys to acquire them. I feel mean. that being said having them run around your base carrying stuff and helping out is incredibly cute - visual bugs galore but honestly the jank levels are on par with scarlet/violet lmao - while its similarly as barren as scarlet/violet, in real pokemon this was offset for me by the joy of encountering new guys. none of the guys in this fill me with joy, the monster design feels incredibly bootleg. that just personal taste
all in all it FEELS like an early access survival base building game. I don't really get why people are being like "this is the pokemon ive always wanted!" because it isn't the gameplay loop of pokemon?? for the record, my recommendation for Pokemon But Better is Cassette Beasts so thats the context of my own taste. but adding monster collection to the whole survival crafting thing seems novel I dont think anyones ever done that before
maybe I'll return to this on mouse+keyboard (and not super high lol) and see if I have more fun. it just seems kind of derivative and tacky to me. but if this legitimately lights a fire under the pokemon company's ass to make a competently assembled game then by all means, godspeed

Rev's last video he said jokingly that he was going to make a Monster Rancher video and I believe he did think about it but realized that Smoking weed would be more fun and making a 3 minute video for April Fools day would be way easier and just as funny.
Maybe talking about Monster Rancher would be an exceedingly boring subject matter.
Which is why I'm going to talk about it right now!
youtube
Now when you watch Jerma play this game it doesn't look so bad. Monster Rancher's greatest strength was the roleplay potential from watching a monster's rise as it goes from struggling to do its training effectively to winning C rank. Learning new moves, going on side quests, and eventually fusing the monster before it dies of hopefully natural causes.
It makes the game good. But there's a reason it never got as big as Pokemon or even Digimon even though Monster Rancher also had a TV show that was dubbed and aired on Fox Kids.
If you clicked on that link you might notice that none of the clips in the intro matches what you might see in a game of Monster Rancher.
While the Digimon and Pokemon shows were not 1 to 1 with the games the very basics were all there.
The Monster Rancher TV show made it seem like Monster Rancher is an adventure game but in reality Monster Rancher is just a training simulator.
That's a huge enough let down to turn away most players because the entire game being one big tournament arc means you feel the repetition really quickly. At least that's the case in Monster Rancher 1.
Monster Rancher EVO does have a story and it does have an antagonist and is not just a tournament arc game. The downside? It's no longer a training simulation.
Yes, they sacrificed arms for legs by creating a more traditional RPG at the cost of not really being a Monster Rancher game.
Well, at least you have a decent variety of monsters to train? Well. In Monster Rancher 1 you have 20 different species of Monsters to choose from with 215 monsters in total.
Sounds good? Well. 20 monsters are unique and the rest are recolors. Imagine playing a Pokemon game with 20 unique Pokemon that has 195 recolors of those 20. There are RPG maker devs who are not THAT derivative. Especially when making a monster collector/tamer game.
People complain about Palworld not having real heart in it's art direction. I would posit that Monster Rancher is pathologically artless.
Across all games there are around a total of 92 unique monsters.
How many species are in Monster Rancher Advanced?
20
Monster Rancher 4?
34
Monster Farm Lagoon?
25
Question yes question? Why?
Why is the number of unique species going up and down when a game this steeped in recolors needs all the uniques it can muster?
Depending on the game, a monster when fused can occasionally have an interesting look like when Suezo fuses with a Rabbit. That can be a Suezo with bunny ears or when Mochi fuses with a Pixie.
Tumblr media
I'm sorry, what are we implying with that flavor text?
What was I saying? Oh yeah, It doesn't get much better than Manna in terms of what you can get in a monster fusion but it really should be the standard. I mean Pixie Golem. I don't want that but someone does.
Speaking of which. Some monster designs are just mid.
Like Naga, that's just a Naga, Golem, just a Golem, Zuum, it's some kind of raptor. Monol? It's just a wall. Hares, just humanoid rabbits. Pixie, that's someone forgetting that this game is made for kids. The iconic monster of Monster Rancher Suezo is just a eyeball and a tendril. I mean credit where it's due, all the really interesting monsters are just the really strange looking ones like Psiroller or Wracky
There are monsters that I would define as "cool" and "fun to play" and "not a pain in the ass to train" but all those monsters don't come easy.
Early game you are going to be annoyed when you are clever (or lucky) enough to summon late game monsters but can't use them because the game wants to use it as an unlock instead. Some have quite bizarre unlock methods as well. There is a monster in two Monster Rancher games that is basically Doodlebob. To unlock it you have to get a Monol to a certain rank and popularity and then pubstomp a low ranking match. You'll get vandalized by an angry fan. Fuse that monster and you get a Doodle. What does it do?
Tumblr media
What doesn't it do?
Last but not least lets talk about the moves. Even in early Pokemon games most Pokemon can learn at least a dozen or so moves. Dragon Quest Monsters your monster can technically learn several dozen after a lot of breeding. Digimon gives you at least a dozen moves to choose from based on type.
Monster Rancher gives you around 8. You'll typically start out with no more than 3 moves too. Hey, at least all the moves are unique and well animated. Until training happens at which point expeditions and training courses will stretch the versatility of the handful of unique animations your monster has for a given situation. In the advance games it's particularly bad as most training is done with the idle animation being thrown around the screen.
At least learning moves can be an obtuse coin flip, wait, that's a bad thing.
The release of Monster Rancher 1 and 2 DX created some interest in reviving the series. The problem being that Koei Tecmo doesn't know what to do with the franchise (which is no surprise to anyone who is a fan of Three Kingdoms, Dynasty and Samurai Warrior games) and it really needs an inspired mind to really renovate and innovate this series.
And for some reason, most indie attempts at making this style of game have been Hentai games for some godforsaken reason.
Why? Who is responsible for this?
Tumblr media
Oh.

Palworld Becomes A Hot Topic: Was it Developed Using GenAI?
On January 18th, 2024, Japanese game studio Pocket Pair became a new major player in the video game industry through the release of the seemingly Pokemon inspired game, Palworld. The game offers a variety of gameplay possibilities; players not only can set Pals (creatures that can be befriended in the game) to craft items for them, they can also build guns and give them to their Pals to use on enemies, hence the iconic nickname “Pokemon with guns”. Thus, Palworld has generated traction through the absurdity of its gameplay, providing players with what Pokemon games have not.
Tumblr media
Released on platforms like Xbox Game Pass and Steam, Palworld quickly amassed 19 million players and generated an estimated $216 million USD in revenue within just a week and a half, despite having a modest development budget of $6.7 million USD.  However, its success has unsurprisingly come with various controversies.
Palworld’s major controversy is centered around its similarity to Pokemon games. Critics of Palworld claim Pocket Pair not only copied the aesthetics of certain Pokemon, but also used generative AI to create Pals. These accusations can be attributed to Pocket Pair’s previous relationships with generative AI. For example, Pocket Pair’s CEO, Takuro Mizobe, previously expressed positive opinions on Twitter regarding generative AI use in developing games. News of Palworld’s controversy has reached The Pokemon Company, which has released an official statement regarding investigating Palworld for copyright infringements. Regardless, many claim there is no hard evidence of Pocket Pair using generative AI to develop Palworld.
Tumblr media
Generative AI comes with its pros and cons; it opens up the world of video game development to those with smaller budgets and less experience, but could lead to an increase in the number of competitors, potentially saturating the market. Although it’s still not clear whether Pocket Pair is guilty of using generative AI to develop Palworld, it's worth noting that Microsoft made a cut of 1,900 jobs in its gaming division, just a few days after Palworld’s release. Could this be hinting at Microsoft’s plans to use generative AI in game development? If generative AI use became a common phenomenon, what effects would it have on employment in the video game industry?

Palworld's Problematic Premiere
(Image Source: Gematsu) It’s tough to find a true competitor to Pokemon, a massive franchise juggernaut that will enter its 28th anniversary next month. Of course, there’s Digimon, which is still iconic on its own. Yo-kai Watch is big in the Japanese market but flopped in the US market. Some indie titles exist, like Coromon, Nexomon, Temtem, and so on. I’m sure many would love some competition…

Day 72 - Fear and Fracture
Calories: 2190
Stress ate today. My grandmother fell and fractured her hip, and now she's in the hospital. Things look hopeful, but if she ends up needing constant help around the house I don't think I could handle it.
Writing practice for today:
I am thrown off enough that I think I want to do some rambling in the writing section, rather than come up with a fiction blurb.
I got Dominions 6 today, a niche strategy game that's all about dozens of nations made up of regional mythologies waging war against each other to put their "Pretender God" on the throne of true godhood. It's a really neat series, but the newest entry's UI is not that great.
All the menu buttons that used to be large and on the side of the screen are now little easy to miss buttons at the very top of the screen. A place you'd reserve for different map modes or something else infrequent. But now every time you want to do something in a province you have to click on it and then move your mouse all the way up to the top right of the screen and figure out which little icon does what. Lucky there's shortcuts at least.
Also, Palworld came out and has 550,000 players right now. Actually insane. That has to go down as one of the biggest gaming upsets for 2024. I actually want to play it too.
Today I woke up early to hear that my grandmother fell, couldn't get more sleep and spent the day stressed out. I feel drained and strained. Hopefully I can get good sleep tonight.
