@responsive_parenting Parent Guilt & Self-Care “Some of us are so consumed by parent guilt that when we read something about how self-care helps you to be the best parent you can be, we feel guilty. As if we’ve been denying our children the gift of a happy, well-rounded and fulfilled parent. Don’t let information like this stress you out, let it free you from the guilt of doing something for yourself.” J. I’m about 68% sure I’m going to move to Philly. I talked to my mom about it today and at first she was ok and supportive and then tonight at 1:30am it’s “ I just can’t stand to see you go” but how can you stand to see me so unhappy and stifled?
I don’t like TX.
I’m so lonely here.
And it’s different kind of lonely. It’s the lonely that says there is no place for you here.
It’s a lonely that says we have no value for who you are.
I feel stifled and crowded.
I want to feel open and free.
I want space.
The trauma? The rejection? The codependent parental guilt?
I don’t know what it is in me that rejects this place or that place rejects me. I just no I need to be freer
I need space though to take up my own space.

Self-care should start with self-talk…. It doesn’t matter how many bubble baths, pedicures or walks you do, if your inner voice is criticizing, over-analyzing and making you feel shame and guilt the whole time, you aren’t going to feel restored, after. What are you saying to yourself when you try to care for yourself? If you are trying to self-regulate, but your time is spent shaming and guilting yourself, instead of loving yourself through those challenging emotions, it is going to take much longer. You know what happens next? Your body and mind will eventually be unable to handle the flood of emotions anymore so it will most likely shut down. You won’t process your thoughts and feelings and self-regulate. You will suppress those emotions and thoughts through a distraction. Distractions are sooooo great!! And they can really be the key to getting us through a moment when we don’t have time to process. BUT… suppression takes it’s toll. Not processing our thoughts and feelings means they just pop up out of nowhere sometimes. They NEED to be processed. This process of (trigger) to (dysregulation) to (over-analyzing) to (suppression) just makes the trigger more intense next time. The process we want to aim for is (trigger) to (notice dysregulation) to (somatic check-in) to (calming method) to (reflection) to (self-love). The Guide to Survival Mode Plans helps you to learn the first few steps, while the next part… the “self-regulation and processing” is coming very soon. Start by noticing your triggers and having a plan for when they come bubbling up. Get the Guide to Survival Mode Plans through the link in my bio @responsive_parenting #responsiveparenting #jmilburn #parentmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealthawareness #postpartummentalhealth #momrage #dadmentalhealth #parentingsupport #selfcareformoms #selfcarefordads #healingjourney #mumlife #emotional #thinking #feeling #parenthood #motherhood #parentlife #dadlife #fatherhood #calm #momlife #learning #parentalguilt #emotionalintelligence #ppa #ppd #maternalmentalhealthmatters #parentingislifechanging https://www.instagram.com/p/CYU40k8LNb6/?utm_medium=tumblr
