and imagine being more reckless than him. the bad influence, so to speak. the one that responds to his big and bad ideas with even bigger and badder ones. you two paint the town red wherever you go and you're wanted in so many cities and towns, but they'll never catch you. as long as 17 can fly, you two don't ever have to worry about a thing

or, so you hoped

all it took was one overzealous "good samaritan" to shatter the illusion and sober up 17. you'd gotten shot after being recognized, and to your credit, neither of you had even done anything illegal or even slightly mischievous. you were just in the wrong place, at the wrong time. and that was the end of it all. you were hurt too badly for 17 to have any choice other than to rush you to the nearest hospital so you wouldn't bleed out in his arms

then came the arrests. the trials. the plea deal

you taking the fall for everything

he had a sister, you reminded him when he argued against the idea. one with a husband and they're gonna have kids someday. and they'd need a cool uncle to make life interesting

he couldn't look at you when they took you away for the last time for your sentence. they certainly threw the book at you, making an example of you when they gave you a lifetime in prison— the guy that tried to kill you didn't even get five years. it's his biggest regret, even long after he's made his life on the island as a park ranger and spends his days defending the nature his old friend android 16 loved so much

he feels horrible living as a free man, grown up enough to recognize the things he did were wrong and yet you didn't get this chance. you were young and dumb and it cost you your life. he's never sent you anything, or even called to check in. he hates himself for it every day, for being a coward that can't face you and even thank you for what you did for him and his life

he's got a wife and kids, a steady job... he's happy. almost

his wife doesn't know about his past. and so imagine her confusion when she gets a phone call one night from 18 as 17 puts the kids to bed

"tell my brother to call me when he can"

and imagine 17's shock when he calls her back

"she's out of jail?!"

If there were ever a "DBZA What If" series, I have one where Android 16 never got destroyed and would become a Park Ranger with Android 17.

I could see him caring and taming birds and even host shows where he teaches visitors about birds while making them do some tricks.

With Goku dead, I could see him being annoyed by it but get over it with time... until the Buu saga where after hearing he is back, signs up for the world tournament in hopes of killing him.

OK thinking about Secretary Cell. Dr Gero is still around as a scientist for some big shady company (Red Pharmaceuticals probably) and still makes Cell in a tube, but instead instructs him to just go conquer businesses and stuff. Android 17 is a park Ranger, 16 the stern Park manager and 18 runs the gift shop bc she didn't want to work on the park at all but got convinced to atleast try. King Cold runs a MASSIVE business related to stocks and managing and selling other companies, and has been slowly delegating control to his two sons. Cooler runs a separate branch with such insane efficiency that people are legitimately worried (his secret is that he is the only one in the family to get off his ass and do stuff). The Ginyu Force are still around as workmen that do unrelated tasks and yet all come together near instantly when needed (5 man Team Rocket) to form the best group to do random stuff at a moments notice. 90% of the main cast is unemployed and just do fighting activities and annoy the shit out of Frieza bc he cannot pull ANY info on them.

Thank u for this beautiful world. Ill always love the idea of cell being the other androids Most Hated Brother. But hes still their brother so theyre forced to see him now and then and they like his kids. Seventeen says he raises them more than does and he isnt wrong lmao

7 Underrated Dragon Ball Characters

Honorable mention, Launch. She's one of my favorite Dragon Ball characters, but Toriyama never evolves Launch beyond her gag, and then he forgets all about her. Unlike most USians, I started with OG Dragon Ball, and enjoyed the found family dynamic that Goku developed after Grandpa Gohan (who ironically is his father figure) died. Roshi is like his grandpa, Bulma his big sister, Krillin his best bro, and Launch his mother. She cooks, cares for the boys, and handmakes them their cute little World Tournament suits. It seemed like she was going to be a major supporting character, but instead she circles the drain doing one of three things until she's just finally gone 1) getting molested by Roshi 2) shooting people impervious to bullets 3) crushing on Tien

Android 16

The only reason he's not higher on this list is because he's not as underrated as the others. Plenty of people like 16 ofc, he's a good character, but in universe he gets nothing but disrespect. Y'know the guy who saved the world by helping Gohan go beyond Super Saiyan? He's on the same tier as Farmer w/shotgun in terms of getting wished back to life. Yamcha would rather give his girlfriend a nice necklace

Super goes a step further in erasing his existence by giving his character traits to Park Ranger 17. And I'd say this was a nice homage to 16 if Super wasn't Super

World Tournament Announcer

The Nameless Announcer. One of the few normies to know about Dragon Team, he's an in-universe Dragon Ball stan. He's also the first character in this entire franchise to go from mustache-less to mustache

Yajirobe

Yajirobe's honestly so cool. He 1 shot Cymbal, then COOKED AND ATE HIM, which is probably the darkest thing to happen in Dragon Ball and actually makes Buu a Yajirobe clone. He was also the equivalent to Tien and Goku on release, being as strong as they were during the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament.

Except, unlike Tien and Goku, he's a total slacker and was probably this strong naturally, or at least very close. For context, 21st World Tournament Goku was equivalent to Roshi, who could blow up the moon with ease

Oh and he was instrumental in defeating Geets, that's cute of him too

Dr. Gero

One of my fav villains, this fucker here, he fucks. He created best girl (18) best twink (17, sorry not sorry Future Trunks), two very good boys (8er and 16), the most perfect it/its, 19, who had one of Dragon Ball's best beatdowns, and was plenty compelling and terrifying on his own. How is this absolute fucker not in every Top 10 or at least every Top 20 villain countdowns?

The world's first meme. He gets twisted as useless by people who think Dragon Ball was ever about anyone but Goku doing anything and dunked on for almost everything he does. Yamcha isn't the kinda guy getting mad about this hate tho, he's actually laughing. He's an easygoing himbo that just wants to chill and exposit, but will absolutely throw down whenever needed.

The most pathetic he EVER got was when he made his hair look like Vegeta's, and you really can't blame a bro for trying

The hate this woman gets... it's definitely less than it used to be, but for someone Goku and Gohan very clearly loves, the fanbase despises her. And why? For not wanting her FOUR YEAR OLD to fight planet busting monsters? Yes, I know, the world needs that four year old to fight monsters, but if that were your kid, would you be ok with that? Would you say bye son I love you and remember to hold your intestines in if the alien demon from another world blasts open your stomach?

I REALLY love what they did with Android 17 for the tournament of power. His arc revolves around both his humanity and how as an android he was built to kill but as a park ranger he’s become a protector of life. Having that culminate in 17 getting to use the super dragon balls to bring everyone back to life is SO good!! Really emphasizes those aspects of his character and shows how far he’s come

I have no evidence to support it, but I'm pretty sure there is also no evidence to go against my theory, especially since DBS has given 0 hints as to how they look like, about Android 17's two adopted kids: They're twins.

Why do I think they are? It's because of how poetic and/or ironic It would be for 17 to adopt twins. Think about it: A cocky punk with an equally cocky twin sister led lives of delinquency, but got their lives turned upside down when abducted by a mad man. After being transformed into a cyborg, absorbed by Cell, and getting his life back from the Dragon Balls 17 got his shit together and became a responsible, less cocky Park ranger.

He marries his wife, they have a child of their own, but along the way, in this hypothetical/possibly Canon scenario, he goes and adopts a pair of twins (maybe because he and his wife wanted a bigger family or he just happened to come across them). Perhaps this pair were similar to him and 18's personalities growing up and decided he doesn't want for them to go down a similar road he went down.

Again, I got no evidence to support this. It's only a theory/possibility considering there are no official designs for 17's family. Just a fun thought.

P.S. I want to see Krillin being an uncle to his nieces and/or nephews.

Practically most of DB's villains have become good guys in some form or another. Tien Shinhan went from would be assassin to a more honorable warrior (that gets no respect), Piccolo went from the instrument of the his namesake's revenge (Demon King Piccolo is a different entity) to Goku's family babysitter, Android 17 & 18 went from destructive cyborgs to Park Ranger & Milf respectively, Majin Buu went from chaotic evil to A guy that sleeps on Hercule's couch & even the Pilaf Gang just kinda crash at Capsule Corp after they got turned into kids.

In “The History of Trunks”, there is a moment where 17 and 18 are wreaking havoc at an amusement park. As they’re about to get on the merry go round, Future Gohan and Trunks show up to stop them; 18 says, “Oh look it’s blondie (referring to Gohan), ‘cept his hair is black today.”

Then 17 responds with this gem of a line, “Of course, he’s copying me.” Me, *inhales*: BOY, ain’t nobody inside or outside of HFIL is trying to “copy” you. Copy what exactly? Copy what? How not to dress? Your whole outfit is an assault on the eyes, especially your shoes and socks. Neon green socks and blue sneakers??? (If the socks were ordinary white socks, that would’ve been fine, but nooooo, this “genius” wanted neon green).

Honestly, you’re better off letting 18 pick out your clothes for you. Gohan “trashing” your shirt was a blessing in disguise, he was indirectly helping you acquire some much needed fashion sense.

Don’t get me started with the pistol-holster combo. You’re an Android, you can fly, shoot beams from your eyes, fire energy blasts from your hands, have super strength etc. Why do you need a gun? It’s so unnecessary, you’re unintentionally limiting yourself. If you’re trying to look tough, it’s not working.

In the main timeline (Buu saga), this guy is now suddenly a park ranger, married to a zoologist and has a family. What a 180. How do you go from, “Screw the Earth and everything on it”, to essentially being a male Pocahontas? 🎶Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?🎶 head a$$. People really do change, I guess.

(I’d like to think that 16’s love for nature influenced him a bit).

Edit: I just remembered the moment where he grabs Trunks’ sword after 18 calls him to help, he says and I quote, “I see your… point.” (This was the English dub, I don’t know what he says in the subbed version.) Not only is your sense of style trash, your humor is too.
