i learnt a lot of important things in 2024 but i think the most important lesson of all is to never read books by Screenwriter Guys(tm) ever again. i don't think i've ever been that furiously disappointed by anything as i have been by the stupid robot book and the stupid ship of theseus book in a very long time
like, a lot of commercial YA by female authors get soooo much derision and like, sure, a lot of it is churned out to chase trends and could have greatly benefited from another round or two with edits, but like... they're fine, they can be fun, and i greatly suspect that if i were to pick one up it would be pretty much what i expect, or maybe even pleasantly surprising? the great sin of the aforementioned Screenwriter Books is that they keep marketing themself as CLEVER and DEEP and SO GENIUS... SO SMART... WAOW... and then they have the audacity to be STUPID. i cannot think of anything more condescending than that
#reminds me of when we had to read (at least part of) the da vinci code for art history class in uni#only so that we could debunk all the things esteemed writer dan brown got horribly wrong about art history and leonardo da vinci#and our teacher made sure to point out the intro with the 'all the facts in this book are correct :)' claim#like. the book would have been a thousand times more bearable if it did not have the fucking audacity.#it's fine to write silly little adventures!!!!#but ohhh you had to be a little hubristic. you had to make it out to be something more than what it is

the gorgug-porter conversation is interesting to me because like. yea for the overwhelming majority of the conversation porter’s being shitty & trying to fit gorgug into a box that gorgug just does not fit into by trying to make gorgug’s relationship with his rage more focused on the aggression aspect of it. but then there’s also this specific thing that brennan brought up again in the ap, which is that gorgug’s relationship with his rage is wholly “this is a tool i use to protect my friends.” which isn’t a bad thing! but that’s his Whole relationship with it, & gorgug seems to place next to no value on his rage in relationship to himself. which is problematic, because it’s first & foremost his rage.
being raised in a household with a sort of toxic positivity largely meant that, whether or not it was his parents’ intention, gorgug internalized the message that more traditionally “negative” emotions such as anger are the wrong response to something. part of the reason he prioritizes his artificing is probably because it’s “fixing” things. in comparison to being a barbarian, which gorgug associates with “breaking” things. good vs. bad behavior, in his eyes.
it’s a totally unacceptable bar to measure a 16 y/o by, but i do think part of porter’s reasoning for not letting gorgug multiclass is him recognizing that gorgug generally does not value anger as a valid emotional response to something, at the very least for himself. & that directly conflicts with what being a barbarian is, because whether you like it or not, that rage is what fuels you. but again, barring a kid from pursuing something they deeply care about in part (not entirely, porter has a lot of more bullshit reasons) because of their fundamental values & world outlook is crazy.
so yes, 98% of porter’s reasoning is pretty shitty, immature, rife with a toxic view that there’s only one proper way to access rage, & generally not a good thing to do as a teacher, but also within that reasoning is the 2% of ‘there is a fundamental part of yourself that you only value if you can use it to take care of other people & you need to accept that as something that can take care of you, too.’ but that’s something to discuss with a therapist or a guidance counselor, not something that should hugely impact gorgug’s academic future.
#gorgug thistlespring#fantasy high#dimension 20#fhjy#fhjy spoilers#btw these r just my personal opinions u r 100% free to disagree#gorgug & his rage interest me so deeply because of how deeply that rage existing seems to be against gorgug’s own will#like mechanically classes are choices & you can switch stuff around any time. but gorgug as a barbarian always felt like an unwilling choice#like that 14 y/o kid did not want to have rage. & that really interests me.#i’ve seen people before be like ‘what if gorgug dropped barbarian & went full srtificer’ but i feel like that simply can’t happen??#mechanically yea sure but it always felt like a core part of gorgug that the rage will always be there & it’s a matter of how you channel it#idk. dnd classes narratively being treated as ‘you can not lose this part of you’ even though you technically can#gorgug could be lvl 19 artificer & he’d still have 1 level of barbarian. because that is part of who he is.#btw i don’t think porter truly cares about gorgug valuing his rage only as a way to be a human shield#i think porter just sees that as ‘wrong’ but like. not as in ‘you need to take care of yourself’ & more ‘you aren’t conforming’#he thinks it’s wrong for the wrong reasons. the nastier ‘this is how you should be’ reasons#ppl being like ‘we r being too hard on porter. it’s an 150% courseload gorgug will be overwhelmed’ i think r missing the point bc like.#that is 100% a valid reason to not approve gorgug for multiclassing! but that’s also 100% not the reason porter rejected him.#that whole interaction was basically porter shoving his percieved version of conformity down gorgug’s throat. was v neurodivergent kid coded#no hate to anyone saying that last point btw these r all just opinions#thinking about last ep wilma & digby being like ‘you’re a great barbarian. you’re so great at it. but look at what you made!!!’ like.#they would never mean it like that. but when you only understand half of your son he is going to prioritize the half you do.

one of my friends is a biologist & i was really amused hearing some of her stories yesterday because they put into context just how believable newt's kaiju drift is as Shit A Biologist Would Do. like my friend has personally met both a guy who got infected with a botfly larva and didn't do anything to remove it (because he just didn't mind), and another guy who identified a tapeworm species by intentionally exposing himself to it (he had it narrowed down to 2 species and needed to know if it was the one that would infect humans) (it was)
#newton geiszler#unscientific aside#drifting with a kaiju is on a whole different level of dangerous. but still.#he's an expert on them. he knew (thought he knew) what he was doing#can also confirm from personal experience that hermann is extremely accurate as a mathematician#like theres a whole range of personalities in mathematics so that part is just 'hes believable as an eccentric academic'#but mathematicians have A Thing about chalkboards#90% of the math profs i had used chalkboards and the 10% who didnt have chalkboards used powerpoint slides#cant remember seeing anyone use dry erase boards except one poor TA who had to fill in one time and was STRUGGLING#well and profs from my non-math classes#also if you ask math people why they like math i think roughly half of them will say something about the beauty of the universe#also his exhausted sigh when pentecost says 'i need more than a prediction' lmao. buddy i have BEEN there#oh and the fact that they have him doing some computer modeling & that he wrote code for the jaegers#extremely overlapping disciplines. i had mandatory computer science courses alongside algebra and stats and all that#& you need to be able to write at least a little code to do the predictive model stuff hes doing#anyway yeah i love them. best eccentric scientists#ask to tag#parasites

This is just me being kinda obnoxious but being good at a certain subject at uni sucks because you then end up having to become an unofficial (and hence unpaid) TA for the rest of your class, or else you earn the reputation of being a stuck up bitch. Uni doesn't reward talent or hard work, it just means you get more leaches attached to you
#Some of my classmates begged me to go to the department on saturday (a holiday) to explain them a thing#But on the way I got accosted by a senior phd student (she used to be project staff hence like super senior to me)#Then later after spending an hour helping her and 2-3 hours helping said classmates I went to do some other work in the dept computer room#And got approached by two people from that class whom I don't even know#Sunday I was woken up by two of my classmates knocking loudly on my door and I had to answer their doubts while still barely awake#and what's nuts is that after some time in that interaction I was just sitting there still half asleep#while they were discussing loudly among themselves in a language I don't undersand and writing on my notebook#which like. you can do outside. in your own rooms. why am I a part of this#Then today some random guy came sat with me after class and I had to help him with his code while doing my own#Also forgot when one of my classmates got mad at me for not sharing my code for an exam with her as she was taking the make-up exam#like. it was highly likely the prof won't change questions and even if he did that's my code?#The coding isn't even hard like the prof basically gives us most of the code and you just have to fill in some of the parts based on maths#which also isn't hard#Ok calling every one of them leaches is harsh and not completely true but damn this weekend is the last time I'll get to relax in a while#and they kind of ruined it for me like I enjoy the subject but that doesn't mean I want to think about it during my free time#Rant

i have a crush on someone i met a month and a half ago who i only saw for a week then that i'm seeing again for a week now and that i'm gonna see for four more weeks from now until june this is what life is all about
#and like i say: brf slt#i hadn't had a CRUSH on someone in literal years. like it was bad for me and this isn't even bc i'm bored i'm just attracted to them. yay!#you have to talk to people to like people i'm finding. because i didn't notice that i was charmed until i was charmed by the talking#the way we met (lmao) is i'm studying to be a teacher. and they work in the middle school i spend a few weeks at this school year#but like that person is not a teacher they work there like when kids don't have class they'll be in a classroom doing their homework or#whatever and they would be the one like telling them to not make any noise#amongst other things#idk if there's a word for that in english it's a very specific job. and anyway. we had to go like where these people work like the specific#part of the school the last time we were there (me and the girl i'm studying with who's with me when i'm...at this middle school. it's like#an internship but it feels weird to call it an internship. but that's what it is) and they were like come see us again from 4 to 5 later#we'll do *this* and we played board games with the kids that were there and that probably sounds weird but it was very fun and funny and#that's when i was like waittttt. and then i looked for them on social media at midnight#i kind of didn't think about them once from six weeks ago to monday but on monday i was like omg i'm gonna see my crush again😁 and then i#did on tuesday and we had a fun interaction and everything because we're bffs. anyway. this is great#when i didn't see them on monday i was like omg what if they quit😔 but they hadn't.#it's just the right amount for it to be fun because like i don't know this person and i won't know them because i won't see them again#until march and after that until may but like it's fun for the weeks i do see them. saw them for 3 minutes on tuesday and like 25 today#it's a job YOUNG PEOPLE do it's not like an old person😭 we're around thesame age. i actually applied to a job like that 3 years ago but#i cried during the interview because i'm crazy like that. i had 2 interviews at 2 different high schools and i didn't cry during the#second interview but i still didn't get the job. lol. but as i was saying young person and i feel like we would genuinely get along like#in an ideal world we would all have drinks together like with my friends and everyone and we would actually hang out. me saying that#instead of like in an ideal world we would: date is you can't even dream a whole dream can you coded😭😭 but like. whatever

Bought a stupid suit thing. Disgustang.
#speculation nation#i got it on sale but it was still kinda expensive. ughhhh#hates every part of that. it's so stiff and uncomfortable and unnatural feeling.#but business professional is the recommended attire... so to that i went...#felt bad staying so close to close but the employees were nice about it at least. and i still got out b4 they closed (barely)#i wanted to go shopping earlier today. in between class and orchestra. but allegedly attendance is required in the lab.#so i went. didnt really feel like attendance was taken. but i still went.#still gotta finish prepping my resume but i dont think itll take Too long... i got a template to follow#from my web coding class actually. bc we just happen to have a resume building assignment this week.#so by working on my resume im working on the lab!! yay!!!#except im not doing the lab resume rn. just the normal resume. the template is still helpful tho.#also need to do a bit of research into the companies that are there and the interview style thingie#GOD this is going to be a whole hassle. i dont wanna wrinkle my stupid suit so i shouldnt stuff it in a bag.#and i dont wanna BIKE in the stupid suit. so im thinking of driving up to campus. forking over the money for guest parking#do the stupid career fair then drive back home to change and then go back up to campus on bus or bike in time for bowling#hopefully. we hope. nonzero chance of having to miss bowling and web coding classes tho. depending on how long i spend at this thing.#ultimately career bullshit is more important than one day of bowling so like. whatever.#but i still want a reward for sucking it up and going to the stupid career fair anyways. even tho i Really dont want to.#im already planning on skipping my first class. he made it sound like it would be fine + expected. so we can go to the career fair.#and that opens up a good amount of time so. doing that. and then hoping i can make it to bowling class...#it's funny to imagine if i didnt have time to go back home to change. me showing up to bowling in a suit.#im not doing that tho. this shit was too expensive to risk it doing physical activity.#BLARGH i am so supremely grumpy going to this thing. i dont want to. at all. i hate all this Professional Attire bullshit.#but i need to... and i already went thru the hassle of getting the damn suit... might as well just go.#i will simply pout and grumble the whole way. until tomorrow where it'll be full social smiles and whatever the fuck.#need to get enough sleep to make talking easier. no time for any fun stuff tonight.#need to find my damn. razor. bc i need to shave my little mustache thing probably. for 'professionalism'. ugh.#kicking and screaming this whole way. man i dont think i even own an ironing board. gonna have to hang the shit up and hope for the best#longest sigh imaginable... i just wanna write....... or play video games...... wahhhh#at least itll be over tomorrow. but then i will have to do presentation stuff for thursday. ughhhhhh

"We should stop thinking in terms of 'compensatory education' but consider, instead, most seriously and systematically the conditions and contexts of the educational environment.
The very form our research takes tends to confirm the beliefs underlying the organization, transmission and evaluation of knowledge by the school. Research proceeds by assessing the criteria of attainment that schools hold, and then measures the competence of different social groups in reaching these criteria. We take one group of children, whom we know beforehand possess attributes favourable to school achievement; and a second group of children, whom we know beforehand lack these attributes. Then we evaluate one group in terms of what it lacks when compared with another. In this way research unwittingly underscores the notion of deficit and confirms the status quo of a given organization, transmission and, in particular, evaluation of knowledge. Research very rarely challenges or exposes the social assumptions underlying what counts as valid knowledge, or what counts as a valid realization of that knowledge."
- Basil Bernstein, Education Cannot Compensate for Society, in Education for Democracy (2nd ed., 1972)
#teaching tag#basil bernstein#education for democracy#quotes#education cannot compensate for society#1972#published around the same time Bernstein was writing his first books on language codes (he's better remembered now as a linguist than for#his contributions to the sociology of education‚ altho there's naturally a pretty broad overlap) and that features fairly heavily#in this paper; in particular he cites a fascinating experiment in which children from different social economic backgrounds were#asked to describe the actions in a purely pictorial story‚ with a marked contrast between the kids from working class homes#(whose descriptions were short‚ specific and required the context of the images to be understood by an outsider) and those#from privileged homes (whose descriptions were elaborate enough that the story could be understood without reference to the images)#Bernstein is very clear that this has no indicator of intelligence or ability; he's correctly identifying a difference in forms of#communication‚ particularly between different class types‚ something that would become more or less his life's work in research#he also finds time to condemn the then novel and nearly universal habit of streamlining in schools‚ and his words are brushed with anger#but that's perhaps understandable; as he himself writes‚ his own research had played some small part in the adoption of the process#despite his insistence that his work was being misunderstood at best or purposefully misused at worst#his ideas were fairly radical in 72 but with the hindsight of time he was simply displaying an empathy and#commitment to a duty of care for students‚ of all levels and abilities‚ that was demonstrably lacking then (and all too often now)

re: the american education system showing high school children their "dead" peers in an effort to lessen teenage drunk driving after prom,
the suing part is one hundred percent true but several parents (including my mom <3) threatened to personally beat the ass of the principal at the time
#i'm small town they all grew up together#when my brother graduated i had just finished seventh grade#and my mom walked up to my brother's now former principal and was like alright henry you have a year#you have a year where you have none of my children in your school. i recommend getting your shit together in the mean time#and the high school had a different principal when i hit ninth grade#mer rambles#the new principal was lisa and we already had beef though thankfully my mother and grandmother were not involved#i got dress coded a lot bc wearing a belt was part of the dress code and i did not own one and had no interesting in procuring one#because i'm autistic and belts fucking suck#but every time i got dress coded teachers would send me directly to the principal bc i had an attitude problem you know how it is#and i'd walk in and lisa would be like “belt again?” and i'd be like “yeah :) how are my grades doing :)”#bc the first time i got sent directly to her i told her to pull up my grades and tell me that a belt mattered to my education#and she would just tell me to go back to class beltless#i was in... sixth or seventh grade at the time?#then lisa moved to the high school my first two years and then became superintendent#during the senior pep rally i was leaving the rally to go to my favorite teacher's classroom bc it was loud#and lisa and one of the other school board members were in the hall bc it was an Event#and they're like Where Are You Going Get Back In There and i was like well lisa i still have anxiety attacks so i'm gonna go be somewhere#else. is that alright with you? and she just waved me off :) <3#i'm a nuisance to any and all authority figures

One of the best times I had TAing in college took place the first week or two of a freshman programming class. A student needed help; it was my turn to go.
"What's up?"
"I got an error."
(Now, some of the error messages, you basically have to be told what they mean the first time, because there's a wall of text that doesn't get to the point or it's a topic that wasn't directly taught. But some are self-explanatory.)
"Did you read the error?"
"Yeah."
"Read it again. Out loud."
The student gave a huff, and started reading: "Expected semicolon on line 157… oh."
He scrolled to line 157, and swapped the commas for semicolons. The code compiled.
never forget the universal rule of the order of things: People Will Not Read It
#it was such an easy help request and like to be clear i wasn't mad about this at all#i was absolutely delighted that he was able to fix his own error#everyone gets to ask for help with basics at the beginning of the semester#part of early programming classes is learning to read the errors and debug your code!#i felt like part of my job teaching was to help students fix their own errors not just tell them what to do#i had my own weird errors at first like when i accidentally duplicated my file and edited the wrong one#another time a student had the same error and read the whole thing and still seemed confused and i walked her through it#hope she figured out debugging at some point though#also#the wall of text error is missing include <vector>#the error that requires a quick explanation is variable out of scope#tech

A Crash Course to Kendrick's Super Bowl Performance, from a Black Woman
Note: this does NOT go in depth into all of the song's lyrics. I don't have time to recount two decades of his discography. This is just a summary of the performance itself.
Let's start with the first visual we get:
UNCLE SAM - most notably recognized from WWII American wartime propaganda, Uncle Sam is the personification of American patriotism and freedom. The term "uncle" is also evocative of Uncle Tom from Uncle Tom's Cabin, an abolitionist book that aided in inciting the Civil War. Uncle is also a very common term (both endearment and derogatory) towards Black men (eg. "unc"). Samuel L Jackson was fantastic. (Edit: and please look up his history of civil rights activism, he was on the FBI watchlist and even a pallbearer at MLKJr’s funeral.)
Uncle Sam also resembles a circus ringleader, notable for my next point:
THE GREAT AMERICAN GAME - no, not Super Bowl. The GAG is us the people being pitted against each other: through late-stage capitalism, through the culture war, through class warfare, through being built of the backs of slaves. We are all players in the GAG because none of us on this site were the oligarchs seated at the inauguration.
This is also seen as Kendrick's stage was a Play Station controller. Not only did it remind of circus rings visually, but it was a game battle stage. The Great American Game is a battle royale of the commoners for the amusement of the rich whites.
Remember the foods / Them color was tin and brown / But now they 100 and blue - For this I'll just say, look what the last election said about lowering the price of eggs... and look at the prices now.
The revolution about to be televised / You picked the right time / But the wrong guy - Election 2024 once more. *Edit to add, the first part of this lyric is in reference to the Black Liberation Song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott-Heron. Thanks to everyone who mentioned that.
THE FLAG DANCERS - yes, the dancers formed the US flag... off of the backs of Black people. Not a single white person in sight, and that's true of the cotton pickers in the fields. Plantations are part of how the US came to economic prominence after being a "backwater" colony. Remember tobacco? Cotton? Our bloodlines do. *Edit to add: they also all piled out of a clown car. The US flag in a clown car? Brilliant.
The red and blue dancers are also notable for representing the Crips and Bloods, two infamous street gangs. The dance in Not Like Us is the Crip Walk. I recommend researching more on your own time about them, but just know they are a large part of the stereotype of Black people being "ghetto."
TOO LOUD, TOO RECKLESS, TOO GHETTO. Do you really know how to play the game? - This is exactly what Black people, especially Black men, get told all the time. It's why we change our names on resumes if they sound "too Black." It's why we codeswitch in non-Black company. This is especially rich considering how non-Black people love our culture and love to make money off of us, as the latter part of the quote points to. And it's even more profound during the Super Bowl-- the NFL is majority Black players.
STREET LIGHT A CAPELLA -- "thug" stereotype dancers to counteract the a capella connotations, with Uncle Sam then saying that Kendrick figured out "bringing other street guys around being a culture cheat code." Yes, this is a direct hit at Drake (listen to "Not Like Us") but also politically. Look up "model minority". Notably I would point to Candace Owens, or the Miami Venezuelan political group that's been in the news recently, especially as this directly led to Kendrick being surrounded by...
DANCERS IN WHITE -- it's white America. That's... that's the allegory.
NOT LIKE US TEASER -- Kendrick says "Not Like Us" is "their favorite song." -> he means white people specifically here. It comes after he's surrounded by all white dancers, the women around him who are his call and response are also in white (my opinion, they represent the industry). He's saying "Not Like Us" is the favorite of yts because it is about BLACK MEN FIGHTING. This again is reflected in the video game stage and ringleader Uncle Sam.
SZA -- instead of giving what they want, we see SZA. She's one of Drake's exes and Kendrick has always supported her.
ALL THE STARS -- This was in the first Black Panther movie, which I recommend you watch. Rest in Power Chadwick. Notably, this movie was incredibly mainstream as a major Marvel movie, and then we have Uncle Sam say...
"THAT'S WHAT AMERICA WANTS: NICE AND CALM. DON'T MESS THIS UP" -- translation: Marvel (the industry, America, etc.) wanted a safe, semi-pop song because white American likes safe pop songs, not Kendrick's usual heavy rap style about his life as a Black man! Don't mess up what you've got going mainstream for having this "Black rap feud" with Drake, who is an R&B model minority to white people because he's safe.
So what does Kendrick say?
IT'S A CULTURAL DIVIDE / IMMA GET IT ON THE FLOOR -- He was warned not to be political or apologetically Black for this Super Bowl performance, but he is using this big stage opportunity to speak out.
40 ACRES AND A MULE / THIS IS BIGGER THAN THE MUSIC -- 40 acres and a mule are what the freed slaves were promised. Instead, this land went to white sharecroppers. Research Jim Crow laws.
THEY TRIED TO RIG THE GAME / BUT YOU CAN'T FAKE INFLUENCE -- rig the election, rig the industry like with model minority Drake, rig the Great American Game with culture war to distract from active class warfare.
NOT LIKE US -- the only thing I'll mention because it made me holler is Serena Williams crip walking on Drake's metaphorical grave. She's another one of his exes (read: Drake harassed the hell out of her). *Edit: she was also fined at the 2012 Olympics for crip walking in celebration at Wimbledon.
TURN THE TV OFF -- exactly like he said! The TV is a distraction, the Super Bowl is a distraction, the mainstream news is often a distraction. Turn it off and get with your people!
GAME OVER — could not see this on my stream but at the end of the performance, the lights in the stadium spelled this out. The world is watching, America…
In conclusion, Kendrick Lamar is a visionary and thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
