Translated excerpts from an interview with Pascal Wehrlein from July 2017

Question: Two weeks before [Christmas], Nico Rosberg had surprisingly declared his resignation. You first had to deal with the disappointment that it didn't work out with Force India. And then suddenly there’s this huge opportunity for the Mercedes cockpit. That must have kept you busy over Christmas, right?

Wehrlein: Frankly, I didn't deal with it very much. At that time, I knew that talks were taking place with Sauber. Or rather, they have already taken place before. I think that was three races before the end of the season. Then the supposed opportunity arose at Mercedes. At that time, I knew that either one would work or the other. That's why I didn't deal with it too much, because I couldn't change it anyway. It wasn't my decision, the season was over. I no longer had the opportunity to show or prove anything. And I didn't want to call Toto or Mercedes all the time either. So I just waited.

Question: How did you find out that Nico Rosberg is stopping?

Wehrlein: Toto called me. One day before the announcement.

Question: How did you experience the five or six weeks between Nico Rosberg’s resignation and the confirmation of Valtteri Bottas? Did you keep talking to Toto Wolff on the phone? How do we have to imagine that? 

Wehrlein: There was a tendency quite early on which direction it is going in. It was announced when I flew to Miami for the Race of Champions. I don’t know how many times I’ve talked to Toto on the phone. A few times. If there is something new, Toto will get in touch anyway. It’s no use to annoy [him].

Question: In the morning after Nico Rosberg's resignation, I was at breakfast with Toto Wolff. Among other things, he said that Lewis Hamilton and Pascal Wehrlein would be an explosive mixture. Can you imagine what he meant by that?

Wehrlein: Yes, I can. That's obvious.

Question: We know you as a nice, well-behaved young man.

Wehrlein: Everyone knows what he meant by that. That I am extremely ambitious and that it sometimes reflects in the car.

Question: You are here in a great mood. Do you sometimes still feel the consequences of the accident at the Race of Champions in Miami?

Wehrlein: Every now and then I can feel it. Less with movements, but more when I sit for a long time or do sports and move awkwardly during it, like lifting a weight weirdly. Then I can still feel it. Otherwise not at all. I wouldn't have thought. When I think back to the first weeks after the injury, I really had days when I thought: 'It won't get any better.'

Question: Was there a mental low after the accident? A point at which you said to yourself: 'That wont work out anymore.'

Wehrlein: I didn't think that wouldn't work out anymore. Rather that it’s not fast enough. The doctors immediately told me that it will get better again at some point. Just a matter of time. But time was my biggest opponent at that time. The tests started four or five weeks later, and the first race was in eight weeks.

I must have imagined them, and I must have imagined him attempting to drive Nick Cassidy into the wall in London, and him driving so badly in Seoul that Pascal Wehrlein said ‘I hope he never gets to F1’. This year he was not good in FE. That’s not a controversial opinion. That doesn’t change the fact that the comments by Marko about Yuki are wildly unfair and demeaning.

Dinner First - Pascal Wehrlein

Prompt A88— “I-I think we should go for dinner first.”

You place the piece of paper down on the table next to your laptop before leaning lightly forward to open a file on your laptop, you click a few things before starting to type Pascal’s schedule for the weekend, you worked for Porsche’s Formula E team and helped schedule everyone’s schedules and tried to make sure nothing overlapped with the schedules, you looked at the paper you had placed on the table and saw someone standing next to your table, you lift your head and saw Pascal standing there with a smile stretching across his face.

“Pascal.” You say. “You’re a little too early to pick up your schedule.” He pulls one of the other chairs closer and sits down on it next to you.

“It’s all right, I can wait.” He says, you look back at your laptop before continuing to type in his schedule. “Is there a lot to do this weekend?” He leans slightly closer to get a look at his schedule.

“You have a few extra things to do.” You softly say as you look between the papers on the desk and your laptop, you had gone to the cafeteria in the building and decided to work there instead of at your desk. “You have a photoshoot actually, so it will take up most of your time.”

“Is that this weekend?” He asks as he watches you, your tongue darts out and slides over your lips to wet them.

“It is.” You say. “It’s at the track, so you don’t have to go anywhere.” He nods his head and places his hands on his knees.

“Are you going to be there?” He asks, you type in one final word before turning slightly towards him.

“I don’t need to be there.” You state. “But I do need to make sure that you’re there, with means I’ll be there for just a few seconds before I’m running to the next person.” He nods his head as he leans back in the chair, you flip the pages on the papers before moving your hands back to the keyboard.

“Oh…” His tone was barely audible, but you had heard, you glance at him and saw his face had fallen. “Okay, but, what if I ask if you could stay?”

“Then André will be late for his interview.” You say, you could see his brows furrowing as he begins to frown.

“But… please, Y/n, I really want you there.” He says. “How else am I going to convince you to spend time with me and get to know you more to be sure about my feelings?” Your eyes widen, and your heart rate quickly picks up, your hands freeze on the keyboard. “I said that out loud, didn’t I?” You slowly nod your head, confirming that he did. “Shit.” You heard him whisper. “Listen, Y/n…” You slowly twist your body towards him.

“I-I think we should go to dinner first.” You say. “And we can… then we can talk about this.” You weren’t sure how to respond, your thoughts seemed to be stuck on his confession. “Talk about it, and… if-if things go well, I’ll be open for another dinner.” He nods his head as he tries to avoid eye contact, but he didn’t want to come off as rude, so instead, he just looked past you at the plant behind you. “Do-Do you like me, Pascal?”

“I… well, yes.” He says. “ I kind of like you.”

“Kind of?” You ask. “Yes or no?” You slightly move your head to have him look into your eyes instead of at the plant.

“Yes.” He finally says after a few minutes of silence and looking into your eyes. “I like you and I want to get to know you more.” His warm brown eyes filled with worry, worrying that you could reject him now before you had even got to the dinner, you turn towards your laptop and type something onto his schedule.

“Look here.” You say as you look at him, he leans closer while biting the insides of his cheeks. “Do you see this date and time?” His eyes quickly scan over the schedule before falling to the one on the bottom, six o’clock at night. “Don’t miss it, or you won’t get another chance.” You could see a wide smile quickly forming on his lips as he begins to nod his head.

“I’ll pick you up on time.” He says. “Is there anything that you dislike or that you can’t eat?” You type something else onto his schedule.

“Firstly, you can come and pick me up at my hotel room.” You say, he nods his head as a sheepish smile forms on his lips. “Secondly, I’m okay with most things, if there is something I don’t like or can’t eat, I’ll let you know, so relax, and pick a place you want to take me to or show me.”

“Okay.” He says as he begins to think, you softly smile as you finish typing up his schedule.

“And check your emails for this schedule.” You remind him as you attach the file to an email before typing his email address in. “I won’t be there to remind you of everything, especially not Friday’s night events.”

“I will, I’ll go now and save it.” He says as he stood from the chair. “I’ll see you later, Y/n.” He quickly moves the chair back to where it was before walking away, you shake your head as your smile widens.

“Cute…” You mutter and click the send email button.

Do you know if there are any out drivers in motorsport (F1, FE, etc.)? I guess this is part just curiosity, but I think the representation would be good in such a “macho” sport. I get drivers needing to be wary of sponsorships and whatnot, but it just saddens me to think they have to live in secrecy due to the environment of the sport.

Not in F1 or Formula E - there’s a handful of out drivers in W Series (Sarah Moore, Abbie Eaton) and Jaime Alguersuari, who came out following his retirement from motorsport, drove both for Toro Rosso and Virgin Formula E beforehand. Lella Lombardi was queer and I’m including this image just because I love it, of her hanging out with her then-girlfriend in Monte Carlo. She’s probably about the closest anyone in the top flight has come to living it openly.

Realistically, the barriers to coming out are twofold; both that motorsport is very conservative and although it would not likely be an issue for sponsors on an international level, it would be for Dave Miggs Big Drills at a local and early level - and very difficult to bear during a junior career. It would become the overriding, defining factor - like being The Girl - and I realise that is absolutely the fault of the motorsport media. 

At a high level, that would also be the issue. Any deviation from the generic image of racer becomes a defining factor - Hamilton’s career is now, at last, primarily described by his achievements but he spent an awful long time being the black driver. Hailee Deegan is the woman, taking on the mantle Danica Patrick left behind. 

The first one will have a hell of a time with it. And the second and third and fourth (let’s call this The Pascal Wehrlein Factor) - you see it with every time there’s the One, Lone Woman. It never loses its novelty (and I think this is one of the good things about W Series showing a whole grid) and each time it’s a shock topic, a noteworthy, comment-attracting thing. 

Unfortunately it won’t be normalised or not something that dominates a driver’s career until there are many. Until we talk about how fucked up it is that there aren’t any already - and that a lot of that is a media issue. A lot of it is that little snide column that would question whether someone who felt it necessary to define their identity was just doing it for attention to distract from their mediocrity - while the media would pounce and pounce and pounce. 

I know it cus I work in it. It’s shitty - and I wish this gap would be used to put more analysis into it and change things. I think there is, finally, a new wave appearing of people who are not only willing to look critically at where there are gaps in who participates in the sport but to write and talk sensitively about it. 

There most definitely are not-straight drivers - but you can see why they’d rather live in peace. Also it really is embarrassing how willing a lot of people are to see it as a joke or a bad thing - imagine the unasked-for Helmut Marko quote, replicated across headline after headline after headline, not “Red Bull Junior Programme boss spews homophobic tirade after driver comes out” but you know it would be the negativity-reinforcing “’Formula One is for men, not gays’ - Dr Marko speaks out on driver’s announcement.”

I hate how easy it is for me to make that up and it ring true. But you know that’s how it would happen. 

Formula E would be better, kinder - our press is different, our environment is much more progressive. You’d still get “’This is why [driver] could never handle F1′ - Helmut Marko responds to [driver] coming out” but it would be at a distance, at least. 

I like to think we are changing things, slowly. Things are massively improved from five or ten years ago. But it’s an embarrassment, in 2020. All that money and sponsorship and technology and not a bleeding edge but a blunt, stolid wall.

You’ve Done Enough - Pascal Wehrlein

A24— “You’ve done enough.”

You stood in tears in front of Pascal, your heart blossoming at the gesture he had done, you weren’t sure what you had done in your previous life to have deserved him, you weren’t even expecting him to remember your one-year anniversary, but here you were being surprised by him, he had arranged for a table to be set up on a rooftop that had a beautiful view over the city lights, candles were lit, and flower petals were scattered over the floor, the wind luckily wasn’t blowing, otherwise it might have ruined some parts of his surprise, he held a single rose in his hand and wore a smile on his lips, you step forward, carefully and slowly, not wanting to fall on your face in from of him, you stop in front of him, bringing your hand to cover your mouth.

“I wish I could do more for our anniversary.” He says, he outstretches his arm, holding the rose out for you, you gently take it in your other hand as you lower your hand covering your mouth.

“Pascal…” You softly say, you throw yourself against him, your arms wrapping around his neck. “You’ve done enough.” tears roll down your cheeks. “More than enough.” One of his hands moves to the back of your head, while his other hand moved to the small of your back, holding you tightly against him.

“Then why are you crying?” He asks.

“You’re a gotdamn fool, Pascal.” You say, slowly pulling back from the hug but remaining in his arms. “These are happy tears.” He lowly chuckles.

“Oh.” He says.

“Gosh… thank gosh you’re my fool.” You say, you move one of your hands to the back of his head, gently pushing on it, he quickly gets the message and lays his head against yours. “I don’t know what I’d do if you were someone else’s and I was stuck with an asshole.”

“You’d have been so sad.” He says, you softly giggle, your eyes crinkling as you do.

“You’re right… I’d be very sad.” You say. “But thankfully the universe was kind to me and brought you to me.”

“This is our anniversary, I’m supposed to give the speech, baby.” He says.

“Well, too bad.” You say, you brush your lips against his, you had waited long to taste him, almost all day, he had missing for most of the day, which had you thinking that he had forgotten all about your anniversary, but no, he surprised you.

“Baby…” He whispers once you pull away from the kiss. “Did you think I forgot?” You kept your eyes closed, but you could feel his gaze burning into you.

“I… yes.” You say, you feel him unwrap his arms from around you, your eyes instantly open. “Wait.”

“Oh, no, no, I can’t let that go.” He says. “Now I need to make sure you remember today, remember that I’ll always remember our day.” He takes your hand and leads you to the table that had been set up, he picks up a glass and an open bottle of appletiser, knowing that you weren’t big on drinking alcohol, but also wanting to give the feeling of celebration since it looked like champagne, he pours some into your glass before handing it to you, he picks up a glass for himself and fills it, he puts the bottle down and steps closer to you. “Like this, let’s be cheesy.” He hooks his arm with yours.

“Isn’t this something they do at weddings?” You ask.

“I don’t know… do they?” He asks. “But who cares, no one can tell us no, now come one, don’t make me do this alone while you watch.” You smile wide and move the glass closer to your lips, both of you stumbling and struggling a bit, but eventually, you manage to take a sip, your faces were close to each other causing the glasses to clink against each other’s every time you slightly moved, you move the glass away and wait for him to finish drinking.

“This is actually good, I thought it would taste bad.” You say, you unhook your arms and place the glass down on the table.

“I went in search for the best.” He says. “Google helped a lot.” You smile and move towards the edge of the building, looking down at the twinkling city lights, Pascal walks up behind you, and wraps his arms around you from behind. “Happy anniversary, Y/n.” You softly smile, feeling his chin resting on your shoulder and his hands covering your middle. “Thank you for staying with me an entire year.” You place your hands on top of his, his scent and warmth enveloping you. “Thank you for agreeing to go on a date with me a year ago.” You turn your head slightly, your lips touching his cheek, he turns his head, moving it so that his lips were touching yours.

Live Events in F1 Games

The last couple of weeks I have spent a lot of my time playing F1 2016. While trying to get all my achievements (only 2 more, I am so close!), and driving on the straights I had some time to think about the game. And I did, but mostly about the game and what I would like to see changed in the upcoming F1 games. I am not talking about small changes such as adding personalized AI or better implementation of safety car events. No, the one thing I would really like to see added and am going to discuss today is adding live events in future F1 games. Before explaining why live events would fit perfectly in F1 games we first need to understand live events and how they can be implemented in the game. 

Live events are weekly, bi-weekly or monthly challenges that give the player new incentive to return to the game or simply keep the game fresh. Many other games already do this and were first introduced in PC games. Small quests that are only available for a period of time or loot boxes themed to a certain event that is going on. But more recently we have seen this trend coming to console games as well. Games such as Destiny and The Division are updated, balanced and have live event constantly, becoming much more than just a stand-alone game. 

So how can we turn F1 2016 into a live title, surely having weekly updates would be ridiculous. Before saying what a ridiculous statement that is let's look at the possibilities of these updates and learn from the best, Fifa. Firstly, FIFA has a thing called live form, it updates each team’s form and adjusts the rankings of the teams weekly. Sadly I don’t think this is possibly with F1 because there are simply not enough race weekends and it would cause a lot of imbalance in the game.

Secondly, player transfers. The game is accurately updated with real life player transfers to keep teams as close to real life as possible. Translating this feature to F1 would mean it becomes obsolete, transfers like this do not happen in F1 often (if at all) during the season. When the drivers switch teams at the end of a season a new F1 game is set to be released soon with the new, correct drivers and teams making the new drivers for the old only more work for no value, therefore I do not think this is a valid live update to be added in the F1 series. So one of the best sports games gives us not really any useful ideas, instead let's look at the other side of F1, racing!

One of the racing games that comes to mind when talking about live events is Forza. Forza has monthly challenges that the player can compete in and win in-game currency each month. Now, this is something I really liked and started thinking how this idea could be applied to F1 games. The connection between F1 race weekends and live events is an easy one to make and create the perfect opportunity for live events.

In game events based on real-world events. Creating bi-weekly events that reflect back on the previous race weekend. F1 and other sports games have a clear player base, fans of that sport. They buy the game because they want to play as their favorite team, player or driver. Now imagine fans of F1 watching a race and one of the drivers does something incredible, you can now (with live events) go and relive that experience as the driver yourself.

Let me give you some examples of some of the live scenarios that could have been added to F1 2016.

- Barcelona 2016, the leading Mercedes drivers crash into each other in the first lap. Your job is to secure your first race win as Max Verstappen.

- Austria 2016, after Manor hasn’t scored a single point since Monaco 2014 this is your chance. Finish in 10th place while driving as Pascal Wehrlein.

- Brazil 2016, drive your way through the field in wet conditions after a late pit stop from the team put you on intermediate tires. Overtake at least 10 drivers while driving a red bull car.

Combining the scenario mode from previous F1 games with live events gives players something to look forward to on those weekends in between races.

Adding such a feature does not require any additional assets to be made and only requires an update every other week by changing the parameters on a scenario.

TL;DR - Create live event based on real scenarios during race weekends.

It was still early morning when Pascal and (Y/n) woke up facing each other, Pascal moves a piece of her hair out of her face before wrapping his arm around her and pulling her closer to him, he mumbles something before clearing his throat.

“Good morning,” Pascal says, his voice still hoarse from the sleep.

“Morning.” (Y/n) softly says, Pascal soon had to leave for the paddock but just lying next to his girlfriend was enough to make him change his mind, he would rather just stay in bed with her all day. “You have to get ready.”

“I don’t want to,” Pascal mutters.

“Mhm, you have to get to the paddock.” (Y/n) says, Pascal lets out a groan.

“Ugh, I don’t want to go,” Pascal says, a soft smile appeared on (Y/n)’s lips.

“You’re going to have to go.” (Y/n) states, she didn’t want him to get into trouble because he didn’t want to get out of bed. “I know it’s nice and warm and comfy under here, but you have to get out of bed you know.”

“Hmm.” Pascal hums.

“You have commitments.” (Y/n) softly says, they lay there for a few more minutes in completely comfortable silence. “I don’t want you to get in trouble, get up.” Unwillingly, Pascal got out of bed.

“All right, fine, I’ll get up,” Pascal says, he thinks for a moment as he stretches. “Do you know what I just realized?” Pascal asks (Y/n), (Y/n) looks at him with curiosity in her eyes. “How lucky I am.”

“Oh, you are, huh? How come?” (Y/n) asks, Pascal climbs back onto the bed.

“I have you here for support, you’re always here to support me or get me out of bed so I can go and do my job,” Pascal says. “I’m so lucky to have you, I’m so happy you’re in my life.”

“Yeah?” (y/n) whispers, Pascal leans closer to her.

“Yeah,” Pascal says, he brushes his lips against hers softly yet passionately kisses her.
