Cuddle croissant on my legs ❤️
When we adopted Cynthie just over a year ago the people at the rescue centre asked us “so…are you thinking you’ll take her?” after twenty minutes of careful getting to know each other.
And I stared blankly at them because as far as I was concerned the meetings were for introductions and working out if there were major problems - like if she was terrified of my mobility devices that I can’t move around without and couldn’t stand being around them - and none had arisen. And they told me three former potential adopters had turned her down for “not liking people enough” because she took some time - think 10-20 minutes! - to start getting to know them.
This girl had been horribly abused and neglected, as a puppy too, and had contracted a pretty horrible intestinal parasite it took her months of meds to get clear of, and was clearly finding kennel life tough. And she was curious about my rollator, and within 20 minutes she was snuffling my hands and wanting belly rubs.
And this is her after 14 months with us. She is my sweet Velcro girl.
And it’s not been effortless. She needs three decent walks a day and I’m disabled (luckily my OH does two of them minimum) or she starts getting bored and wanting to chew things. It took us a few weeks to work out the balance of how much exercise she needed minimum, and to work on “these are good things to chew, like toys and bones, and these are *dangerous* things to chew, like cables”.
We took her to Dog’s Trust adolescent puppy training classes to work on chewing and recall so she could get off the lead in the park, and in the meantime we took her to an enclosed dog park we had to drive to as there’s none local to us, and to an indoor doggie soft play place because she *really* needs social time with other pups.
And most of these are things you should do with a puppy you get from a breeder. They aren’t born toilet trained! At least safety training (“drop” for dangerous things and “come” for recall) are essential basics.
Much like kids, and indeed humans of all ages, dogs have needs that will cause problems if they aren’t met. Those needs vary a bit depending on the dog’s size, age, type and personality. Again, like humans.
Please don’t get a dog without making *sure* you can meet those needs. And, if you can, please rescue.
We are in a horrendous dog rescue crisis atm, and a *lot* of that is due to the cost of living crisis. People are losing their homes and temporary accommodation, hostels, shelters etc often won’t take dogs. None of that is anyone’s fault (other than landlords and capitalists ofc).
But I’m still seeing a *lot* of folk spending enormous amounts of money on puppies. And yes, sometimes folk have good reasons for that; a lot of rescues won’t adopt to folk with young children, sometimes people need to train service dogs from early in their lives etc etc. This isn’t shaming individuals; I don’t know your individual circumstances. It’s a plea, if you are thinking about getting a puppy, that you *consider* rescuing instead.
If you’d like a particular breed, the shelters have literally never been fuller of purebred pups whose lives are in imminent danger because pounds and shelters are *full*. If you want a puppy, please think hard about *why* rather than an adult dog, because cute tiny furballs grow up fast and need a lot of training, but you can still ask at shelters about that too. One of my best friends and her partners went to a shelter last year expecting to adopt an older dog and came away with a sighthound puppy from a litter that had been dumped and the shelter had raised.
If an individual shelter is awful to you for disability reasons, please do not be discouraged from asking elsewhere. I was really worried after a friend of mine looking to adopt a dog found a particular breed shelter on social media being incredibly disableist about *autistic* people, for some reason (it was very clear from reading their posts they had very little idea about what autism actually is) and this made me panic horribly that any shelter would see me with my mobility devices and immediately turn me away. Actually the three different ones we checked in with in the process of adopting Cynthie were nothing but helpful and welcoming, and others in other parts of the UK, the US and Australia have been the same in the past year to friends with disabilities as diverse as MS, fibromyalgia and schizophrenia.
Obviously you know your own life and your own circumstances best. This is only a request to *consider* rescue. Right now, you are *very* much saving a dog’s life by doing so.

Okay so the follow up, the story about how I adopt my son, a Maine Coon tabby mix of 5 years old. I received an IG dm from my cousin's wife who informed me that her cousin is giving her cat of 5 years to whoever is willing to adopt from her. Like I mentioned before, I wasn't really keen on getting a cat especially when it is already an adult at 5 years old because my first cat, Didie was a kitten and was with us for 14 years before she passed of old age and cancer.
So I wanted a long relationship, one that would grow old with me and not leave me much sooner. Also one I can train from young, like the pram and body leash and what not.But after much questions, like his personality, his health and what not. I decided to adopt him. His photo is the one that called out to me but knowing a lot of details form the previous pawrent, made me aware that his pawrent has actual no intention to give him away at the first place.
When we finally arrived there, my sister and her boyfriend went with me to collect Nikko ( his pawrent called him Niko) from them. We were all smiles until it was time we wanted to bring him back to our homes.
His pawrent wanted to close him into the carrier, but ran into the kitchen and cried. She then, carried him into the carrier the second time at which she then ran into the kitchen the second time and cried. It was awkward and hard for me because I lost my cat so I know how it must have felt for her and it was hard because her mother kept asking if she was alright and if she was sure and she kept nodding. The third time, she finally closed the carrier door with Nikko in but she asked if she could take pictures of Nikko before we leave at which I agreed (internally I was reluctant because the whole situation is awkward and tough but I understood that she truly loves Nikko, we still keep in touch by the way because I felt like it was a responsibility to let her know how her beloved pet is doing with me) . The fourth time , she finally closed the door after the photo taking which made me wonder because her mom was reluctant to take photos with her daughter. My intuition made me feel something is amiss because when I was on WhatsApp with her daughter, her daughter who is the pawrent agreed to pass to me his food, litter, litterbox and toys and whatnot but her mom threw away his toys, what's left of the litter and his food bowl which left me with an empty litter box, and food. Her mom asked the pawrent what to do because she threw away and I was like why would you throw those before completing the adoption process.
The pawrent is obviously not listening because she was clearly devastated.
When I finally took Nikko to the car, on the way down the elevator, I cried dramatically because I felt how she felt to lose a cat. The first night he was with me, he was stressed and after a few days, he is a trouble maker whom we loved.
When I messaged his pawrent, I said that it doesn't seem like your idea to give away Nikko because Nikko happens to be her beloved pet, the one closest to her and follows her because maine coon is a loyal cat.
To find out that her mother was the one who gave this young pawrent an ultimatum to give away both of her cats in 2 weeks because her mum had enough of the second cat making a mess with the poop and cleanliness issue. Imagine after 5 years, she blew.
So there you go the story of how I met my son who now pisses me off cos he is trying to escape from a pram and somersaulting in it which causes him to almost choke himself. Sigh

Day 4/366:
She will always be the #1 girl and it’s hard not being able to give Nala walks yet as she needs her last Parvo shot before she goes and explores the world. Until then I will enjoy the mellow walks with my senior dog.

Dog Pawrents
pairing: post apocalyptic joel x wife reader
Tumblr media
The snow had started falling just past noon, light flakes dusting the pine trees as you and Joel rode the patrol route north of Jackson. You were both bundled up in thick jackets, scarves tucked high, rifles strapped to your backs. The wind had teeth, but your horse, Daisy, kept a steady pace through the woods.
You looked over your shoulder and grinned. “You cold, old man?”
Joel snorted, tugging his scarf up. “I’m fine. You’re the one with ice in your damn eyelashes.”
“Adds to the look.”
He rolled his eyes but you caught the corner of his mouth twitching into a smile.
You’d been riding in comfortable silence for a while when a faint whimper broke through the sound of the wind.
Joel’s hand immediately went to the rifle strapped across his back, and you followed his lead, dismounting quietly and crouching beside him.
The whimper came again higher pitched this time, closer.
“Could be a trap,” he murmured.
You nodded, raising your rifle and stepping carefully toward the trees.
There, tangled in a patch of fallen branches, was a dog.
A scrappy, medium-sized mutt, matted fur dusted in snow. She was stuck her back leg caught between branches, paw twisted, tail curled between her legs.
You exhaled softly. “She’s hurt.”
Joel eyed the woods. “Could draw infected.”
“We’re far out. Quiet zone.” You stepped forward.
He sighed. “Y/N—”
“I’m not leaving her.”
He muttered something under his breath, but you could already hear him giving in. He always did, when it came to you.
You knelt beside the dog, murmuring softly, and she stilled, eyes wide and scared. You gently pried the branches off her leg, careful not to tug too hard, and Joel came up beside you with a strip of cloth from his saddlebag.
Once she was free, she limped straight into your arms, trembling.
You looked up at Joel with pleading eyes.
“We can’t just leave her.”
Joel rubbed a hand down his face. “We don’t even know if she’s got anything could be sick, could have fleas—”
“Then we clean her up. I’ll do it. Just… she needs a warm place, Joel.”
He met your eyes. Long pause. Deep sigh.
“Fine.”
Two weeks later, the mutt now named maggie was curled up in front of the fire at your cabin, wearing a knit sweater Ellie insisted on making for her.
Maggie had become a permanent fixture.
Joel pretended to hate it.
“She sheds everywhere,” he’d grumble, brushing dog hair off his flannel.
“She ate half my jerky.”
“She won’t stop followin’ me around.”
But every time you turned around, Joel was sneaking her extra bites of meat at dinner or rubbing behind her ears when he thought you weren’t looking.
One morning, you caught them both napping in his armchair maggie curled in his lap, Joel’s hand resting on her side.
You didn’t say a word. Just smiled to yourself and went back to boiling water for tea.
One night, after you fed maggie and tossed another log on the fire, you settled beside Joel on the couch, your legs draped over his lap.
“She loves you, y’know,” you said, sipping from your mug.
Joel snorted. “She loves whoever feeds her.”
“She follows you even when I’m the one holding the treats.”
He shrugged, not meeting your gaze. “She’s a good dog. Doesn’t bark much. Stays close. Smart.”
You tilted your head. “You’re soft for her.”
Joel grunted. “I’m soft for you. That’s the damn problem.”
Your heart swelled.
He reached over and rested his hand on your thigh, calloused fingers tracing idle shapes. Maggie snored softly by the hearth, and the snow tapped gently against the windowpane.
“Thank you,” you whispered.
“For what?”
“For letting me keep her.”
Joel looked at you, eyes warm.
“You could’ve brought home a baby goat, and I’d have found a way to make it work.”
You snorted. “Don’t tempt me.”
He leaned over and kissed your temple. “You keep savin’ things. Dogs. Me. Guess I gotta just keep lettin’ you.”
You smiled and curled into his side, heart full.
Outside, the world was still broken, dangerous.
But in your little cabin with Joel and your scruffy new companion, things finally felt like home.
The moment you scooped the injured dog into your arms on patrol, Joel knew you were going to try and keep it.
Snow dusted your lashes, your breath puffing in the cold air, and the scrappy little mutt whimpered once, then buried her head under your chin like she belonged there.
Joel sighed loudly behind you. “Y/N, c’mon.”
You didn’t look at him. Just kept holding her close, tucking her against your jacket. “She’s freezing. Her paw’s bleeding. I’m not leaving her out here, Joel.”
He muttered something under his breath something that sounded suspiciously like “You’ve gotta be kiddin’ me”but he was already pulling off his glove to help wrap the dog’s paw.
“You’re gonna carry her the whole way back to Jackson?” he asked as you gently passed the mutt into his arms while you mounted your horse.
“Yup.”
“And when she pisses all over the couch?”
“She’s a good girl. She won’t.”
“She’s got fleas, I can see her scratchin’ already—”
“We’ll give her a bath.”
“She better not touch my flannel.”
“She’s literally bleeding and you’re worried about a damn shirt?”
He grunted. “That’s my good shirt.”
You rolled your eyes. “You have two shirts, Joel.”
“Exactly. That’s half my wardrobe.”
Back in Jackson, it didn’t take long for Maggie to settle in.
Joel looked at you like you were deranged. “Beans? That’s what you’re callin’ her?”
“It fits. Look at her.”
“I’m lookin’, and I’m seein’ a walking pile of fur that’s gonna destroy my peace.”
But you saw the way he crouched next to her quietly the next morning, offering a few pieces of jerky while muttering, “You better not pee on my boots.”
Maggie loved him immediately.
She followed you, sure but she shadowed Joel. Sat by his side at dinner. Slept curled up outside the bathroom door when he showered. Waited by the window when he went on solo patrol.
You couldn’t help but smile whenever you saw them together.
One week later, you came home from your greenhouse shift to find Joel on the front porch, sitting on the steps with Maggie curled up beside him. His hand was resting on her head, thumb stroking just behind her ear in slow, easy circles.
You crossed your arms with a smirk. “You sure you don’t like her?”
Joel looked up, deadpan. “She ain’t my dog.”
“She literally follows you to the outhouse.”
“She’s your responsibility,” he grumbled, standing. “You better brush her, clean up after her, keep her outta my socks”
“Uh huh,” you interrupted, grinning. “But who gave her a bite of his sandwich today?”
“She was starin’ at me like I kicked her damn puppy.”
“She is the puppy.”
He huffed.
“Say it,” you teased.
“Say what?”
“You like her.”
“I tolerate her.”
“You love her.”
He narrowed his eyes, stepping close. “I love you, sweetheart. That dog? Jury’s still out.”
But then Maggie trotted up beside him, bumping her head against his leg, and he reached down without thinking to scratch behind her ears.
You caught it the barely-audible murmur as he looked down at her:
“There’s my girl.”
You gasped. “Joel Miller!”
“What?” he barked, already flustered.
“You do love her!”
“I was talkin’ to you,” he said gruffly, stepping around you to head inside.
You followed him in, laughing.
“You weren’t!”
“I was. You’re my girl.”
Maggie trotted after him, tail wagging.
“Then what does that make her?” you teased.
He turned, arching an eyebrow with a dramatic sigh. “Fine. She’s my girl too. You happy now?”
You stood in the kitchen doorway, smiling like sunshine. “The happiest.”
Joel looked at the two of you one sunshine-faced, the other scruffy and wagging and shook his head with the softest smile.
“God help me,” he muttered, pulling you into his arms. “I’m outnumbered.”
“You wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“No,” he said quietly. “Guess I wouldn’t.”
Later that night, Maggie snored softly at the foot of your bed. Joel was brushing your hair out of your face with calloused fingers, eyes already heavy with sleep.
“Love you,” you murmured.
His hand paused for a second before resuming.
“Love you more, darlin’. You and your damn dog.”
You grinned.
His damn dog, now.

Pawrent’s Day Out
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
charles leclerc x female reader
summary: you, charles and leo head out for a much needed break on the sea
warnings: none :)
a/n: i know i know im the worst updater and writer ever, but im back slowly but surely, and this is so so tiny fyi i just wanted to get something out 😭
Race season was always taxing in many ways, one being the time you and Charles got to spend together when it came to your relationship. You didn’t really have the luxury of travelling to every race like others wags, especially not when you had sweet little Leo.
Leo had been to a few different race weekends but of course the noise and being without either of you, wasn’t the easiest nor safest place for the puppy.
“Snacks, drinks, towels…dog treats…can you think of anything else baby?”
Your voice called out to Charles as you checked over the bag that rested on the kitchen counter, Leo was waiting patiently, sitting at your feet.
“No I think that’s perfect mon amour”
Pressing a kiss to your cheek, he took the bags, leaving you to pick up Leo and hold him to your chest, taking his leash and one of is favourite toys.
Charles didn’t have to leave for Barcelona until Tuesday so this weekend was all about your little family, and what better way than to take out the yacht and enjoy the warm weather on the water.
“This was a good idea my love, we should do this more often..”
“I couldn’t agree more”
The boat rocked softly with the waves, Leo ripping apart the little dinosaur toy on the floor as Charles sat next to you, his arm sliding around your shoulders and tucking you into his side.
“Our little family…couldn’t get more perfect than this”
You couldn’t help but agree, there was no more perfect moment than right here, with the love of your life and your little baby Leo. Someday there’d come a ring, and many kids to fill your home with laughter and so much excitement.
“Someday, we’ll have little me’s and you’s running around on this boat Char…you ready for that?”
A small laugh spilled from his lips as she nodded his head, pulling your chin up to place a kiss to your lips
“With you? I’m ready for anything..”
It wouldn’t happen for a few years, but the thought of it made your hearts swell, the future would be full of endless possibilities, something the two of you were more than excited and ready for.
But for now, right here on the warm water, this was all both of you needed..
