i love the sonic dark era i love when there's always some crazy shit going on like time travel and sonic being sent to an alternate dimension or being turned into a werewolf or shadows secret alien dad showing up i love it when sonic is making a new friend every 5 seconds i love it when the final boss is god i love when they werent afraid to try new things and be "weird" or "edgy"

i saw a post saying boom was good bc it feels like it could be done with any doctor/companion duo and honestly that was one of the things i felt was wrong with it
#in a show with a title character that could be Literally Anyone and a companion sharing the lead that could be Literally Anyone#i value the little moments that set this duo apart from the rest. ESPECIALLY when it comes to returning writers like rtd/moff#fifteen and ruby felt a little too eleven/twelve and clara adjacent in boom. in both their dialogue and characterization#space babies also landed a little weird at first bc it lifted a bit from end of the world BUT the scenes that fifteen and ruby#had to themselves. like ruby getting covered in snot and fifteen laughing. or fifteen and ruby looking after the Space Babies#or fifteen going out of his way to save the monster bc that monster is the only one of its kind Just Like Him Fr#that stuff is so good and its also something we haven't seen from another nuwho doctor. the vulnerable bleeding-heart empathy#and a dynamic w a companion that is basically 'two troublemakers that just deeply love fun and adventure and getting into trouble together'#oh yeah and also the devil's chord was peak fiction because it touches on fifteen's renewed connection and love for humanity#and marries it to ruby being a musician and how music like any art is the expression of the human soul etc etc#WHAT MAKES A DOCTOR WHO STORY GOOD TO ME IS PARTLY HOW THE PREMISE TIES INTO THE DOCTOR AND COMPANION'S CHARACTERS#IT HAS TO FEEL LIKE IT WAS TAILOR MADE TO THEM. ELSE IT WONT LAND RIGHT TO ME#i hate the take that they should've saved wild blue yonder for a fifteen episode bc#the tension is hinged on how well the doctor/companion know each other. u have a level of it that u can ONLY get#with fourteen and donna who are two halves of a whole soul but have also spent much more time missing the other than knowing them#im not rewatching fifteen's eps rn until a week later when i can watch it w my qpp but#rn i still feel a stronger sense of fifteen and ruby's characters from all the rtd-written eps rather moffat#which like. i get that a lot of that is my personal dislike of moffat's writing style but still#dr who#15 era#dw spoilers

#knock knock boys#of course she'd make all the boys actually own up to their feelings#which would shorten a ton of the shows by half lol#but what an incredible character!#honestly a lot of the characters in this show feel refreshing#peak being actually a very competent and dedicated employee who's simply avoidant in his personal life#and thanwa being a bit lost in his professional life but very confident otherwise#and almond being super rich but being precious and overprotected rather than an asshole#they all just seem to have contrasts that keep them from feeling flat or like archetypes#but jane is just another level#the actress just OWNS it#and the character is so fun and lovable even as she antagonizes peak#she just radiates playful warmth and tough love and its incredible#truly a realistic diva for the modern era lol

tbh i think what initially draws sandra to the caregiver role isn't some innate maternal instinct (i actually think that between her self centeredness and her mommy issues she has a lot of complicated feelings on the idea of motherhood, even before she starts seriously considering whether or not that's something she wants) but rather the power dynamics involved with being in charge of looking after someone and having a softer side that she doesn't feel comfortable or able to express anywhere else. she's not talking it all that seriously at first—it's only after a combination of growing closer to chris and his little side, growing more compassionate in general (though ofc keeping her arrogant pizzazz, she's just not as mean about it now lmao), and developing some goddamn spite for celia bean and how she raised her son that she starts embracing the responsibility and caring nature of it.
#there's also the fact i'm projecting my desire to squish chris's little cheeks onto her lol but rn i'm talking actual character reasons#i have a handful of aus where her and chris's caregiver/baby dynamic starts in college her Peak Selfish Era so it's fun to try and#jump through hoops to justify those ideas hgklsadjfkl#i know i could just be like 'this is what i'm doing fuck you' but the character analysis and hoop jumping is often fun for me#i just have to be careful to not let it slip into being defensive. because that's when it becomes Not Fun :')#but this was fun to write#even if there's a lot of overlap here to why i headcanoned tanya kennedy as a caregiver hgklasdjfl#i love headcanoning selfish characters with a sweet caregiver side. which says nothing about my own parent issues don't worry about it#the goes wrong show#sandra wilkinson#agere#fandom agere#marshy speaks
