.... so i got a sample of squid from zoologist perfumes, and, 1. i fucking love this perfume so much it really is what i love in aquatic perfumes and 2. ...... honestly kind of fits what merfolk smell like, at least to me? they definitely have a noticeable salty/semi-fish smell, very strongly like the ocean, but they also are faintly musty, in the kind of way that a reptile house smells.

What is a scent family?

A scent family is like a category or genre of fragrance. Just like movies have genres (romance, horror, comedy), perfumes are grouped based on their dominant smell and ingredients. Think of it like this:

Every perfume is made of “notes” (ingredients that create a scent). When a perfume is mostly made up of certain types of notes, it fits into a scent family! These families help you understand what a perfume smells like without sniffing it!

Now that we know about scent families, let's learn about the notes that make them up!

In music, a note is one sound. In perfume, a note is one smell — like vanilla, rose, or lemon. Perfumes are made by layering many of these notes together into a scent “chord.”

If someone says a perfume has jasmine notes, it means you’ll smell a clear, recognizable jasmine scent as part of the fragrance!

Scent notes are usually grouped by how they behave over time, aka how quickly they fade after spraying. When you spray a perfume, over time it'll fade scents through 3 categories:

˚⊱Top Notes (First Impressions)

Usually lasts: 5–15 minutes. These are the first scents you smell when you spray a perfume. They’re usually:

Light and fresh

Meant to grab your attention

Evaporate quickly

˚⊱ Common top notes:

🍋 Citrus (lemon, grapefruit)

🌿 Herbs (mint, basil)

🍉 Fruits (pear, apple)

˚⊱Middle Notes (Heart Notes)

Usually lasts: 20–60 minutes. This is the “heart” of the perfume. It appears after the top fades and gives the perfume character.

Common middle notes:

🌸 Flowers (rose, peony, jasmine)

🍑 Fruits (peach, plum)

🌿 Herbs (green tea, lavender)

˚⊱Base Notes (The Dry Down)

Lasts: 4+ hours. This is the “ending” of the perfume. It sticks with your skin and leaves a long-lasting impression!

🪵 Wood (sandalwood, cedar)

🫐 Sweet (vanilla, blackberry)

☁️ Musk (amber, cashmere wool)

It's important to know what notes you like so you can find them in your perfect perfume!

*ੈ✩Perfume Types‧₊˚*

There are 5 main types of perfume, namely parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, eau de cologne, and eau de fraiche.

Parfum : 20-40% scent concentration. Can last 12+ hours (the longest lasting type!) It's the most expensive and concentrated type of perfume, that has a very strong smell.

Eau de Parfum : 15-20% scent concentration. Can last 8-10 hours. The most common type of perfume you can find in high end stores!

Eau de Toilette : 5-15% scent concentration. Can last 4-8 hours. Usually has a softer or lighter scent. Literally translates to "toilet water".

Eau de Cologne : 2-4% scent concentration. Can last 2-4 hours. Usually used for casual wear, for people who still want to stand out, but not command attention.

Eau de Fraiche : 1-3% scent concentration. Can last ~2 hours. Light and refreshing scent that is often reapplied throughout the day after using a stronger type of perfume.

The higher concentration of scent oil in the perfume, the higher the price will be! Keep this in mind when perfume shopping because it can get expensive...

*ੈ✩Layering‧₊˚*

Layering means wearing two or more scents together so they blend into a unique fragrance on your skin. Think of it like mixing paint to create a unique shade. Layering allows you to really create a unique scent that's personal to you!

You can layer perfume sprays, body mists, lotions, oils, body washes, or even hair mists!

Start with a scented base

Apply a lotion or oil with a subtle scent (like vanilla, coconut, rose, etc.)

This helps lock in moisture and makes the scent last!

Apply your “main” perfume

Spray your main fragrance on your pulse points (wrists, neck, ect.)

Top it off with a light mist or accent

Add a lighter perfume, hair mist, or body spray to bring out certain notes! For example: add a citrus spray to brighten a floral perfume, or add vanilla body mist to warm up a fresh scent!

Mix 2-3 scents max! Too many different scents can get muddy!

Think about what kind of scent you want to wear. What do you want people to think when they walk by? What kind of scents match your personality? What kinda vibe do you want to have? These are all things to consider when finding your signature scent!

caleb went still the second he hugged you, like he’d just gotten hit with something intoxicating. he pulled back just a little, blinking at you, then leaned in again, burying his face in your neck.

“holy sh—pips,” he groaned dramatically, arms wrapping tighter around your waist. “you smell like heaven and sin had a baby.”

you burst out laughing. “you’re so dramatic.”

he just nuzzled you again, lips brushing the sensitive skin beneath your ear. “i’m serious. i want to crawl under your skin right now.”

you swatted at his arm, flustered. “it’s just perfume!”

“whatever it is, it’s a problem.” he kissed your jaw, then lower. “'cause now i wanna kiss you for, like, three hours straight. minimum.”

RAFAYEL

he was painting—focused, shirtless, streaks of color on his arms—when you crept up behind him and wrapped your arms around his waist.

he stilled.

then he turned his head slightly, inhaling, like a wolf catching a scent in the wind.

you bite back a smile as he ducked down, nosing along your neck, groaning softly. he slinged an arm around your waist pressing you to his side.

“delicious. is that new?”

you just smirked. “wouldn’t you like to know.”

he laughed under his breath, mouth finding your neck, your shoulder, wherever he could get. “if you wore this to mess with me, it’s working. i want to paint you now. naked, preferably.”

SYLUS

you barely walked past him before sylus turned his head, eyes narrowing like he just picked up on something forbidden.

he stepped closer, towering over you, his hand curling gently under your chin. “...you smell dangerous,” he said lowly, his voice already laced with heat.

he tilted your head up, heart fluttering as he leaned in, his mouth brushing against the back of your ear. he moved lower, lips grazing your neck, then the space just under your jaw.

“what is that scent?” he murmured, like it was bothering him. like it was consuming him.

“do you like it?”

he huffed a soft laugh against your skin, kissing your throat like he was losing control. “you’re not allowed to wear it around anyone but me. understood?”

you slipped under the covers beside him, thinking he was asleep. he wasn’t.

the second your body curled into his, his arm came around your waist, slow and sure. he inhaled once, then again.

“…what is that?” he muttered, voice rough with sleep. he buried his face in your neck without waiting for an answer.

you giggled and his arm only tightens around you.

“not funny,” he mumbled, lips brushing your throat. “you smell like trouble.”

“you’re imagining things.”

“i’m not.” he kissed your collarbone, again and again, slower. “we’re not leaving this bed today.”

ZAYNE

you stepped into zayne’s office for your monthly check-up, but the second you approached his desk, he looked up like you’d just walked in wearing nothing but your birthday suit.

before you could sit at your usual chair, his hand found your wrist and guided you into his lap instead.

you pretended to play dumb. “what do you mean?”
