College Debt Will Be On Your Permenant Record

A few days ago, I read Permenant Record by Mary H. K. Choi.

Quick Summary: Pablo Rind dropped out of NYU, swimming in credit card debt. Living in a makeshift bedroom in his friends’ apartment and working the graveyard shift at a bodega, Pablo struggles to see the path for success. One night at five in the morning, pop star/actress Leanna Smart walks into Pablo’s bodega. With Leanna, things start to make more sense...or do they?

Pablo was a great character to read. He was funny and sarcastic but still endearing. The way he spoke about the world made his story feel relatable to the audience. Moreover, the progression of his character over the story arc is well done.

Even though Pablo was the lead, the side characters are still well fleshed out. We see as much insight into their lives as Pablo would have, so there is no magic omniscient moments. Yet, the reader still has a good understanding on the characters’ personalities and what they value.

The plot was cute. It moves at a decent pace. The more Pablo values the events, the more they are shown. I think everyone at some point wonders what it would be like to date a celebrity, and Pablo’s story is one version of what if?

The ending was a toss up. It’s one of those endings that you know it can kind of go either way. I wasn’t surprised about what direction it went. If you do pick up the book, I would love to hear what you thought.

Today we kick off our book fair at school. I still get ridiculously excited about the book fair even though I have the ability to buy books that I want at any time I want. There’s just something magical about seeing the books set up on the shelves and tables, all laid out for people to look through.
