The Dead Poets & Alphabet Fate

thinking about the impact of school seating plans on the poets.

Imagine being eleven-year-old Cameron, Richard destined by alphabetical order to sit with Dalton, Charlie in every class and there's no escape, they're assigned to be roommates.

the mismatched pair are forced together while Meeks and Pitts (assuming there's no or very few 'N' last names) become instant buddies, and Pitts brings his alphabet fated roommate Perry, Neil into the mix

and Overstreet, Knox who is wedged between 'M' 'N' and 'P' is brought into the friendship fold

and Charlie can only watch the boys having fun or glare at Cameron, but Cam is too busy cursing his family name and the suffering it brings at school to notice.

So how does Charlie make it into the friendship group? Alphabetical order dictates that he's banished to the opposite end of classrooms until a teacher relaxes the rule, or bad behaviour causes him to be moved.

Personally, I think Welton assigns roommates alphabetically at first, and its only older students who get the option to submit preferences for Hager to consider

and in my mind, Hager would be happy for Meeks and Pitts to share a room, and perhaps Charlie shares with Neil at some point - but by the movie timeline, there's no universe where Hager allows Charlie to be placed with students he can 'negatively influence' like Neil or Knox,

so he's kept with Cameron (poor long suffering Cam), while Neil is ideal to place a new kid with.

Dylan Butler, 17, was named as the gunman who attacked Perry High School in Iowa on Jan 3rd 2024 as students returned from their Christmas break. His former classmates, sisters Yesenia Roeder and Khamya Hall, both 17, said that Butler had been bullied relentlessly since elementary school. They added that the bullying had escalated recently, when his younger sister started getting picked on, too. Officials at the school didn’t intervene, they said, and that was “the last straw” for the shooter. “He was hurting. He got tired. He got tired of the bullying. He got tired of the harassment,” Yesenia Roeder Hall said. Police said the suspect’s motive was being investigated and authorities were looking into “a number of social media posts” he made around the time of the shooting. Moments before the shooting, Butler, who was found dead at the scene, posted a video on TikTok captioned “now we wait” and the song “Stray Bullet” by the German band KMFDM accompanied it. Butler died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before being arrested. The sixth-grade student killed was identified as 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff. Jolliff's cause of death was determined to be three gunshot wounds from the shooter. The high school’s principal, two more staff members and four students were also injured during the shooting, which started in the cafeteria before class started that Wednesday around 7:30 a.m. Authorities had previously reported five injured people aside from the deceased, but that number has since been increased to seven people who “received wounds or injuries of varying degree” during the shooting, according to DPS’ Division of Criminal Investigation.
