The macro writing level issue with Makoto becoming a cop despite Joker being beaten up by the cops is that the writers think Joker is too cool to have lasting trauma that would be gross and get in the way of the plot AND they won't commit to the ACAB idea so instead focus on the idea that Makoto is a good person and therefore will be a good cop who hates other, bad cops. Like Zenkichi and Kaburagi.

On the CHARACTER level the problem is Joker never says "hey actually I know this is your life's goal but I'm actually not comfortable with it," and Makoto's not psychic and kind of reasonably assumes if her friend is having serious concerns, he'll be honest with her? Especially because Makoto has been shown? To not pick up on how others feel very well? And Joker's behavior towards her in no way changes after the interrogation?

It's not a good plot point but to act like Makoto as a character is meant to be read as callous and uncaring is a misreading of the text, I'm sorry.

alright i have my own bad p5 take to share;

does anyone else here believe that maruki is indirectly guilting joker about akechi's death? bc like - maruki's confidant ends before akechi dies, so you cant talk to him about it at all. and yet maruki found out about akechi dying and brought him back. which means it feels like he's saying "oh yeah its your fault he died, he's back now!"

This is me when I think about how kid Akechi probably had to teach himself how to ride a bike because he had no parents to help him... imagine that tiny kid struggling to balance and getting scrapes on his knees because no one was there to catch him when he fell....

Nothing is safe with akechi not even his wholesome bike riding hobby, even that has pain and suffering behind it.......

I think that the reason that I can't ship Akechi with just Joker is because whether or not he means to he does and can have deep, meaningful interactions with the other phantom thieves that are just as interesting as with Joker. There's nothing that's by necessity just interesting about their relationship that isn't interesting about the others.

What Akechi is to me, narratively, is a mirror that reflects whatever the thieves dislike about themselves the most. Like for Ryuji it's how quick he is to anger and how he feels like he has something to prove, for Ann it's that desire for revenge that sits under the surface of her skin that she never shows, for Yusuke there's so much that we would be here all day because they are so fundamentally similar in so many ways, for Haru it's the way he gets used by everyone in his life just like her and for Sumire they both pretend to be someone they aren't in order to be liked

I just think there's a lot of potential in making the other thieves look at themselves through Akechi in the same romantic lens that's put so heavily on joker and I think that Akechi should be making out sloppy with the thieves that I listed about it

Makoto tragically suffers from what I call "Adrien Agreste Syndrome" where the writers assume you like a character as much as they do and then they forget to justify it why you should like them.

"Oh Makoto's the smart one!" (Never mind that the rest of the team is able to gather info to track down Kaneshiro without her, that she doesn't actually improve our infiltration strategy, and that her advice just tells you things the players already know)

"Of course Makoto becoming a cop is fine! Why wouldn't it be?" (never mind the dozens of instances in this game alone that the police for a corrupt from the top down and everything bad that happen to her family was related to the criminal Justice system also literally the entirety of strikers)

Makoto can do no wrong as far as the game is concerned, and it constantly tells you that without showing you it, and that translates to some pretty undeserved hate for her as a character as opposed to the writing surrounding her

it’s always wild to me when people act like p4 and 5 are the origin for where the series’ storytelling somehow trips and stumbles into depictions of misogyny. like girl come now, p3 originally was designed with no expectation of it being possible to have female friends within the game’s social links - friendship with women within the original game’s life sim mechanics was textually an impossible outcome.

Why did I recently realize that Sumi tying the ribbon back in her hair when officially joining the group actually kinda parallels to when she did it during her first session with Maruki but the contexts are different??

"Dr. Maruki, I... I want to become Kasumi." || "I want to live life as Sumire!"

I'm honestly having trouble grasping why people want the ribbon to be replaced besides "she's still clinging onto/dependent on her sister" which... Is not why she chose that? She even spells it out at the end of her SL: It's in memory of her sister along with her newfound promise and resolve. This is part of why her putting it back on works for me and not a sign of dependence on Kasumi.

Especially since having it all the way down just showcases her depression and mental state so it's like... Huh?

I can see it materializing her outfit being a mix of her admiration to Joker and her growing newfound promise to Kasumi. Cendrillon being brought back with Kasumi's spirit can kinda support that too imo.

Sure, a redesign would still be a massive improvement but still it's more about that particular bit and the ribbon which commonly used in criticisms and arguments. Idk, it just works somehow despite the writing issues and a lovely parallel!
