The iconic Mexican painter as seen through almost 300 archival items, from her wardrobe to her personal art collection
This compendium presents the rich diversity of themes, ideas, concepts and emotions generated around two fundamental, iconic figures of modern Mexico: painter Frida Kahlo and her husband, muralist Diego Rivera.
More than 300 images from the archives of the Museo Frida Kahlo in Mexico City offer readers a glimpse of Kahlo’s distinctive wardrobe and the impressive collections of popular and pre-Hispanic art she assembled with Rivera, her connection with photography and the history of La casa azul, her beloved blue home that now serves as the museum’s main building. This volume welcomes us into Frida Kahlo’s universe, exploring the legacy of an indispensable figure in the world of 20th-century art and culture in her native Mexico and across the globe.
Frida Kahlo (1907–54) began painting at the age of 18 when she was immobilized for several months as a result of a bus crash that left her permanently disabled. From then on, art served as an immense source of healing for Kahlo as well as a vehicle for self-expression and cultural exploration. At the heart of Kahlo’s practice was her love for Mexican folk tradition, her staunch communist beliefs and her complex relationship with her body, gender and sexuality. A lifelong activist, Kahlo died of a pulmonary embolism after participating in a demonstration against the CIA’s invasion of Guatemala.

I like the concept of slugcats using various flora as head accessories. Like Monk tying the wheel flower around their ear. Please excuse the rough sketches.
Artificer's pups would gift their parent a cherrybomb plant to wear, reminding them of their explosive abilities.
Survivor would tie the batnip plant to attract bats to it, a survival tip that their parents may taught them.
Hunter will wear the dandelion peaches that can be found in Sky Islands. Although this is quite of a distraction from their mission, Hunter thinks that they deserve to look pretty too.
And finally. I can imagine rivulet gathering many flowers that they find pleasant. bubble/glow weeds, Lilypucks and etc. And gifting these to Moon or their lizard friends.

Book 472
Worlds Beyond Time: Sci-Fi Art of the 1970s
Adam Rowe
Abrams 2023
Another new book from Abrams. We’ve gotten to the point in publishing where, if you’re like me and like large-format art books, you need to get used to the idea of buying them when they are released. Fewer and fewer publishers are taking the risk of releasing art books, and they are staying in print for shorter and shorter periods of time. So, when I heard about this book, I made a point of getting myself a copy, and I’m glad I did. While my preference in vintage book cover art leans more toward the pulp era, it is the 70s covers that I find myself the most familiar and nostalgic. Featuring some all-time greats—Frazetta, Vallejo, Elson, Emshwiller, Mead, the Dillons, et al—and divided into subject categories such as spaceships, cities and landscapes, plants, animals, aliens, fantasy realms, and cryptozoology, this is a beautiful and very welcome look at an incredibly creative, experimental, and occasionally ridiculous sci-fi decade.

fatima aamer bilal, excerpt from moony moonless sky’s ‘i can’t be loved, swallowed or digested. must i make myself smaller?’
[text id: this thought was unceasing: somewhere must be home. / the spine-folding need to belong was woven into my skin. no amount of clawing could ever get it out. / it scared me that even at my very best, i wouldn’t be able to stop myself from being fond of the tearing. isn't mauling touch? the warmth of a hand close to you, right before is tears you apart, is something.]

His nose was broken, and his lips and chin were wet with gore. There was blood in his eyes and under his hair, and his expression was one of cold and perfect murder. It was as though losing the rapier had snapped some invisible shackle. He didn't even look angry; he looked like an ending given human form.
