🌹 — COMMERCIAL PERFORMANCE !

once pre-orders for ROSES began shortly after the release of “SHE,” the album was quick to sell. within the first week, it surpassed 700,000 pre-orders. within two weeks, it cracked a MILLION pre-orders, becoming the first album by a female soloist to reach such a milestone

“SHE” itself was just as much of a success. it debuted atop the SPOTIFY daily chart, and with over 200,000 units sold, it debuted at number one on the BILLBOARD HOT 100, becoming the first korean language track by a female soloist to top the chart. to JANG-MI’s surprise, it also topped the GAON chart, and won FOUR music show awards. the song remained atop the BILLBOARD chart for FOUR consecutive weeks, while it remained atop the GAON chart for THREE

as expected, ROSES was met with immense critical acclaim. like JANG-MI’s previous works, this album saw the most praise for her vocal performance and lyricism, as well as for the album’s production. as most of the tracks were written, composed, and produced by JANG-MI, many critics claimed that it added to the album’s more personal subject matter when it called for it, making it much more “raw”

receiving a 90 on METACRITIC, this album became one of JANG-MI’s most critically acclaimed albums to date. critics and fans alike fell in love with the richness of its production, as well as for the nuances in her lyrics and the more “gothic”and elegant concept in an industry where girl crush was becoming the norm. many claim that a standout track is “ROUGE,” as its production is a “feast for the ears,” and the lyrics discussing a toxic, failed relationship are some of JANG-MI’s best. other favorites include the pre-release track and the lead single, as well as “ANYTHING BUT,” “LIKE THAT,” “UP THE WALL,” “BY THE PHONE (AGAIN),” and “SAY THE WORD.” the use of R&B in the tracks is seen as one of JANG-MI’s signatures, and the public was pleased to see that it was utilized in her first korean album in addition to more traditional sounding pop

🌹 — STYLING !

the styling was so distinct this era, but still very cohesive !

there were flowy fabrics and lighter colors used for “SHE,” shades of red and flower motifs for “BELLA DONNA,” and lace + gothic elements for “ROUGE” ! there was also some corsets used here and there, especially from vivienne westwood

a lot of mirror palais and dior used too sjiwjs like yg went all out for her !

her makeup was very put together for “SHE” and “BELLA DONNA,” featuring soft eyeshadow in shades of pink, red, silver, or white. there were lots of sparkles used, as well as pearls, bows, or flowers around her eyes ! there was this one stage where a lot of pink blush was used on her cheeks, and for “BELLA DONNA,” her signature was red lipstick !

the makeup for “ROUGE” was dark all over, with heavy, smudged eyeliner and colors such as dark purple, dark red, and black. the sparkles were more minimal, but rhinestones were used around JANG-MI’s eyes, and sometimes, her mascara would be done in a way to make it look like she’d been crying ! there were crosses painted around her eyes, broken hearts painted on her cheeks, the whole nine yards !

the styling for her music videos was also insane ! it was so princess like for “SHE,” with lots of florals, corsets, and dresses used ! “BELLA DONNA,” of course, had a lot of cut outs, rose motifs, and shades of red, while “ROUGE” was a combination of the two !

the budget was crazy too bc there was archive mugler, vivienne westwood, dior, and chanel all over the place ! and ofc, JANG-MI had a hand in the styling, as well, bc she put together over twenty outfits for her music videos !

the fashion girlies were eating her looks up, though ! like she truly looked incredible

🌹 — ERA HIGHLIGHTS !

although she was exhausted due to release of her english album earlier in the year, jang-mi had so much fun during this era !

prior to the album’s release, some pretty unique teasers were released !

we got four posters that looked like they were ripped straight out of a vogue editorial, two concept videos (titled “ROSA” + “SPINA”), a moving poster (!!), and a highlight medley in the form of live performances !

the music video teasers were also incredible bc they truly looked like a movie

now buckle up bc a lot happened after the album’s release sjhdjdk

thirty minutes before the release of “BELLA DONNA,” there was a countdown livestream held, and it was so funny bc her staff intentionally chose questions that would annoy her sjiwjsjsk

they even chose questions that she answered already and jang-mi was yelling her head off ! she was tired y’all

at the end, she was asked to give a spoiler, and she almost danced to the entire chorus of her song BSMSJD her staff were all “that’s too much !” and jang-mi was sitting there cheesing

had to get her revenge !

following the music video’s release (which got 70 MILLION views within its first twenty-four hours !), jang-mi was everywhere !

all over korean television, doing a thousand magazine interviews (her puppy interview with buzzfeed is a fan favorite always !), appearing on radio shows, and she even got herself a lil vogue korea cover !

her running man episode was so good ! she was absolutely hilarious, and all the yelling she did gave knetz a new meme sjdksh

she was also on when mom’s asleep ! the promo was serious !

and oh her showcase, y’all,, jang-mi had a crowd of 30,000 at gocheok sky dome,, that many people for a SHOWCASE !

it was fun and it was your typical showcase, but then she found out that her family and her boyfriend came,, oh girl she cried like a baby,, and reportedly, they all took a picture backstage, but we simply never got it

jang-mi wants to protect the identities of her family, and that’s okay !

afterwards, we got a lil live performance on youtube ! it was like tiny desk but not really, and oooo girl that video went so viral

we know jang-mi can sing, but she hit a whistle note during “UP THE WALL” and practically parted the red sea

the band renditions were also so good ! till this day, fans are still begging yg for a live album skjdkdj

at the end of the year, she was a headliner at new year’s rockin’ eve ! she hadn’t been since 2016, so ny rosies were thrilled

girl the labelmate support was strong !

jang-mi was making tiktoks with blackpink almost every day ! when she did the #RougeChallenge (which was HUGE) with lisa the world truly stopped

and girl she and jennie became THEE duo in kpop that year ! just two mothers mothering like

the girls even showed up to jang-mi’s showcase !

and it was too sweet bc they literally trained together ! like at that point they hadn’t seen each other in four YEARS, and then they literally reunited after they both found success like how prophetic is that !

those girls were jang-mi’s best friends when she was a trainee like </3 the reunion was everything truly

and omg the jangtan interactions !

they were crossing paths all over the place like skhwjdjd and they already met during the amas in 2017 so ! they were sat next to each other at award shows, they took pictures at new year’s rockin’ eve, and their tiktok pages were FULL of each other for a good two weeks MSNKJSJS

and she and namjoon clicked ! they were discussing literature every time they saw each other

jang-mi also had a few japanese promos ! she was on the cover of vivi (with a lil rockstar concept going on !), and ofc, she was also all over japanese tv skiwjsj held an album press conference there, too !

all in all, an incredible debut ! jang-mi had to rest for the next 5 years, but the public loved her and she truly made waves <33

MALLARI (2023) - MMFF REVIEW

“‘Di ba’t isang sumpa ang magmahal?”

Mallari does not only showcase the story of the infamous Fr. Severino Mallari, but also delves into the lives of men from succeeding generations of his clan. The first descendant, Johnrey, a documentary filmmaker in post World War II Philippines, and the second being Jonathan De Dios, a doctor and the lead protagonist of the film. The two descendants of Fr. Severino try to discover their family’s darkest secret, which most likely has contributed to the killings and disappearances in Magalang, Pampanga.

All three generations of the Mallari clan are played by Piolo Pascual, which is perceived to be difficult parts to play. However, Pascual was able to to help distinguish one generation from another and yet was able to establish the connection between all three characters.

What also is depicted in the movie is the presence of important female figures in each of the Mallari men’s lives: Dona Facunda, Fr. Severino’s mother played by Ms. Gloria Diaz, Felicity, Johnrey’s wife played by Elisse Joson, and Agnes, Jonathan’s fiancee played by Janella Salvador. All three actresses gave the three women their respective well-defined characters which was able to show how each Mallari’s love for these women had urged them to take greater lengths, even if it will cost them their own morals.

JC Santos does an excellent job in portraying Brother Lucas in the likeness of Brutus from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, as he showcases his character’s loyalty and later betrayal to Pascual’s Dr. Jonathan.

The film may remind one of Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All (2022) with its presence of common themes such as gore and manslaughter. It is also important to note how both Carido and Guadagnino have commonly used manslaughter as a dark metaphor for love as a motive of sacrifice and self-discovery, which the former has executed very well and evidently in Mallari (2023). It also bears similarities with Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho (2021) not just with the presence of gore and manslaughter, but also with the key theme of time travel, which the two Mallari descendants have used in order to learn about the dark secret of their family for this film.

The film had a well-organized flow of events, as well as a smooth transition in between time periods. It was able to give me and other viewers proper context and a good idea on how to let the story unfold and think about what could happen next. However, Jonathan’s arc was very anti-climactic towards the end yet it established his arc as an anti-hero.

Another thing to love about this film is that not only did it have Gothic themes and the use of the Catholic faith, which are associated as Western literary and cultural elements, but it also incorporated the use of Filipino folk medicine and faith healing, which are indigenous Filipino cultural elements, as important parts of the film.

In conclusion, Mallari (2023) was a great watch, and it definitely deserved the accolades. Not only did it bring justice to a dark love metaphor, but it also presented and promoted Filipino culture through folk medicine as key horror elements. It is a must watch for traditional Filipino horror movie buffs and those in need of a fresh face to Filipino horror films.

P6 Idea - 22 Dragon Veins

First let's talk about dragon veins. They are formed from the collective subconscious of extinct creatures on the earth, and they have always supported the balance of this world. After the protagonist completes certain tasks and the dragon veins enter into a contract, the dragon veins will reside in the protagonist's body and allow the protagonist to give birth to a "cosmic egg" that symbolizes motherhood. As the protagonist takes care of the cosmic egg, it will turn into a persona.

The personas hatched from the cosmic egg are a mixture of their own mythological images and Mesozoic reptilians. The arrangement of the 22 Arcana is as follows:

DARKWING IN:THE MEG

Somewhere deep down in the ocean, in the Philippines trench, a crew part of research facility lab was in danger, trapped in a damaged nuclear submarine as the hull is being rammed by an unidentified creature. Two lab rat scientists: Marks and D'Angelo were struggling with a damaged hull.

"Anything to report" a mysterious voice sounding like James Monroe Iglehart

"Nothing yet sir" says Dr Marks

"Let me know what you find"

"So far nothing yet sir" says Dr. D'Angelo

"Can you tell me what happened"

"Well, It just keeps getting worse" Dr marks says.

"D'Angelo, Marks, talk to me. What's going on"

"We've moved to the sonar room. We couldn't finish the research sir" Dr D'Angelo says.

"It's a mess, sir" Dr Marks added.

"This is the worst I've ever seen. We need you to send for help sir, we got 10 men down and in end of medical attention"

"We're heading-Heading back to the escape pod now"

"Not until you tell me what is-"

But then something outside hit the sub lab causing everyone to tremble.

"Marks. D'Angelo. What the hell was that?"

"I have no idea sir but we were ambushed by some creature"

"Listen, sir I think we got something outside the ship. Something dangerous, it's what attacked us"

"Something's crushing the hull. We're coming back sir"

"Get back to the escape pod now. Now"

"We're right behind you"

"You guys, move!"

Every researcher and scientist and faculty got to the escape pot but it was locked and they see something biting into the lab.

"Marks. D'Angelo. Report"

"I see the creature sir, it's-I don't believe it sir"

"What? What? What is it?"

"The create It's 60 feet, you're theory was right sir, we have to warn people"

"Finally after all these years we have finally found it, fowl will be impressed"

"Sir Let us out! The escape pod is locked"

"Oh I know"

"Sir please, hurry, please! The men are injured and the lab is unstable at any minute now this whole place will collapse with everyone in it"

"I'm afraid I can't let you do that"

"What? But it, there are people here"

"Yes but that creature is part of our project"

"You knew about this didn't, how could you sent us"

"It was the only way, we needed test subjects"

"You were using as as your guinea pigs"

"Oh no no no, lab rats is more like it"

"Sir Don't leave us!"

"I'm sorry but I'm afraid I can't let you go" the boss presses a button the last thing he heard was his lab workers screaming before the lab exploded.

"Hehehe, phase one is complete now on to step 2" the mysterious boss pulls out his phone.

"It's me, it's here...I need you to bring them in...I don't care if it's risk it has to be done, good, bring in the bait time to set the trap" he hands up, "soon you will be mine"

Two months later, in saint canard, in the mallard's residence.

Lived Drake, launchpad and his daughters: Gosalyn waddlemeyer mallard, morgana Macawber, Abigail waddlequack and Iclynn.

Note: iclynn is a clone of Drake created by fowl.

Gosayln was reading an article about the incident which had her concerned.

But then Abigail had a letter in her hand when gosayln heard her cheering.

"Yeah" Abigail cheered.

"What is it Abigail! What's wrong?" Drake rushed downstairs along with gosayln who seemed concerned.

"My application went through" Abigail says.

"Oh that's great Abigail" morgana says when Abigail ran in the living room, she was reading a gothic magazine.

"What did you apple for?" Launchpad asked who was holding iclynn.

"A oceanographer for the underwater research facility for Mana One, they supervise a mission to explore a deeper section of the Mariana Trench, previously concealed by a thermocline of hydrogen sulfide"

"Wow sounds big but aren't you pushing yourself a little too fast into a career Abigail, I mean you are only 14 seems just you're kinda rushing into this" Drake was a bit concerned.

"Come on Drake, this is my future, I love the ocean, I want to study the ocean please, please say I can go"

Drake sighs, "ok ok only if you promise that you'll be safe"

"Here's a better idea, you guys get to come with me" Abigail says.

"Huh?" Everyone was shocked.

Thr application was approved byan incredible scientist named Dr. Quackson.

"And he says that I can bring my family to show the underwater lab" Abigail explains the letter but the moment gosayln Heard that name she was surprised.

"Did you say Dr quackson" she asked which had everyone intrigued.

"You know him gosayln?" Drake asked.

"Yeah he was an old friend of my grandfather"

"Oh I didn't know your grandpa knew him" Abigail says.

"Well I haven't seen him in awhile not since was a little, it's been so long I don't know if he even remembers me"

"Well since you know him, this will be a perfect time to show you guys this new project I'm helping them with is gonna be great"

They were taking a helicopter ride to the ocean, but Drake looks down at the ocean, he starts to get a

Flashback.

A young boy his leg wrapped by a seaweed trapped, he was struggling trying to free while reaching out for the surface, ending the flashback.

But gosayln was concerned about Drake, "hey you ok" she grabs his arm.

He was startled at first but was at ease, "you seem nervous about something" gosayln says.

"Oh I'm fine, I just...have a bad moment with the sea" he looks down at the ocean and was having another PSTD attack.

When they land on top, they were greeted by a duck in a lab coat with orange hair.

"Abigail, so glad to have you on board" Dr quackson and Abigail approach each other, exchanging handshakes.

"It's so good to have you here Ms. waddlequack"
