Researchers identify biomarkers to predict severe side effect of cancer immunotherapy
- By Nuadox Crew -
Japanese researchers have discovered a way to predict a severe side effect of cancer immunotherapy—immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS)—before it occurs.
Scientists at Kyushu University analyzed cerebrospinal fluid from patients before CAR-T therapy and identified two key proteins, C1RL and FUCA2, that serve as biomarkers for ICANS risk.
A predictive test based on their ratio showed high accuracy in distinguishing high-risk patients. While promising, the study’s small sample size means further validation is needed.
Researchers hope this test will enable early intervention or preventive treatments, and they aim to find similar biomarkers in blood for a less invasive screening method.

Image: The researchers identified biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid that can reliably predict ICANS. Specifically, they found that combining two key proteins, C1RL and FUCA2, enabled highly accurate detection. A predictive model based on their ratio achieved an impressive accuracy of 0.95 in ROC curve analysis. Credit: Daiki Setoyama, Kyushu University.

Caltech team develops microrobots for precise drug delivery and tumor treatment

- By InnoNurse Staff -
A Caltech-led team has developed innovative microrobots, called bioresorbable acoustic microrobots (BAM), for precise drug delivery within the body.
These bubble-like hydrogel spheres can navigate bodily fluids, target specific sites, and release drugs effectively while being safely absorbed by the body. The microrobots are designed with biocompatibility, bioresorbability, and precise movement in mind, overcoming past challenges of operating in complex biofluids.
The robots incorporate magnetic nanoparticles for external magnetic control and a two-step chemical modification to achieve a hydrophilic exterior and hydrophobic interior, enabling bubble retention critical for propulsion and ultrasound imaging. Advanced fabrication methods, including two-photon polymerization lithography, allowed the creation of precise spherical microstructures with therapeutic cargo and propulsion-enhancing features.
In tests on mice with bladder tumors, BAM delivered therapeutics more effectively than conventional methods, significantly reducing tumor size. The platform offers potential for broader medical applications, including drug delivery and precision surgery, with aspirations for future human trials.

Here we love and appreciate the Space Stone, and so, in honour of its magnificence through the Marvel Cinematic Universe, allow me to introduce Tessember.
Tessember is a Tesseract-themed challenge that goes through the month of December. There are two prompt lists, one I lovingly call Regular Mode and the other I personally name Hard Mode, both of which can be tagged under #Tessember 2021 and/or submitted to the AO3 collection.
While the aim is to create something for every prompt, feel free to take your pick through to fulfill them however you wish!
Perhaps you tell the tales of the cosmic cube before cinematic time, maybe you shall rewrite the gaps between existing appearances, possibly you regale with events even off the known timelines, but whatever you do, try to keep in mind the prerogative is fun, and plenty of that is able to run abound when the Space Stone is around 😏🧊
Questions can be sent to me at @worstloki. FAQ and prompts in text form below.
FAQ:
How long does the challenge go for?
- The month of December (from the 1st to 31st) though if you post outside of this I will be merciful and allow it.
Prompts:
- Yes, you can combine prompts. Feel free to mix and match, even between the different prompt lists.
- Yes, you can do prompts whenever you wish. While the prompts are numbered by day it's not a schedule. They can be done in whatever order. Posting different prompts on whatever day is fine, though the aim would be attempting to follow it. Loose guideline and all.
- No, you're not obligated to do all the prompts. Do as many or as small a number as you want. Gosh, I'm not cruel.
What kind of works?
- No, it doesn't have to be a written work. Any form of art, including sketches and edits.
- Yes, it counts if what you create is considered as small as a chat post or writing up a headcanon/fic idea. It counts.
Loki?
- No, it's not specifically a Loki + Tesseract event. But feel free to make it one if you wish ;)
Posting?

Bioprinted mini pancreas could help in the fight against diabetes

- By Sarah Perrin , École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) -
EPFL spin-off Readily3D has developed a novel system that can print biological tissue in just 30 seconds. The firm’s technology is being used in a large-scale European project to develop a living model of the pancreas for testing new drugs.
youtube
Video: “Bioprinted mini pancreas will help in the fight against diabetes” by EPFL, YouTube.
First you see it as a transparent shape on a computer screen – a small electronic replica of the human pancreas. Then just 30 seconds later the tissue is printed out on a bioprinter, blood vessels and all, from a sample of human stem cells. This amazing feat is possible thanks to revolutionary new technology created at EPFL’s Laboratory of Applied Photonics Devices (LAPD) and further developed by Readily3D. Their technology was recently selected for use in the EU-funded Enlight project, which aims to develop a reliable living model of the pancreas for testing diabetes medications.
The pancreas is a vital organ located just behind the stomach. It serves several functions, such as producing enzymes and bicarbonates essential for digestion and secreting a variety of hormones – including insulin, which is the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. As a result, pancreatic disease often leads to diabetes since the damaged cells can no longer produce the insulin the body needs.
Over 450 million adults around the world suffer from diabetes, including 60 million in Europe. In Switzerland, 4.4% of the population reported in 2017 having been diagnosed with the disease. And the number of patients is growing worldwide. Diabetes is the second-leading cause of amputation (behind accidents) and increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke by a factor of eight and of kidney failure (requiring dialysis) by a factor of nine. Diabetes is also the leading cause of blindness among adults. Methods for improving diabetes diagnosis and treatment could thus bring major benefits to public health.
A first step
The bioprinting technology developed at EPFL uses a biological gel containing a patient’s stem cells. A laser is applied to the gel to solidify it through polymerization. The location and intensity of the laser beam can be controlled in order to solidify only those areas of the gel needed to form the desired tissue. “One of the main advantages of our method is that it can create tissue in a single block, making it particularly useful for printing soft tissue like organs,” says Paul Delrot, the CTO of Readily3D.
There are numerous benefits to bioprinted tissue. It can be tailor-made since it’s created from a patient’s own stem cells, and it eliminates the need to conduct animal testing. “What’s more, patients won’t have to try out an array of drugs, some of which may have unpleasant side effects, before finding the right one for them,” says Damien Loterie, the CEO of Readily3D.
“Developing a system that can print 3D tissue at the cubic centimeter scale and faithfully replicate the functioning of a live pancreas is a huge challenge, which we hope to meet with this technology,” says Christophe Moser, the head of LAPD. Their technology could also one day be used to bioprint other kinds of tissue for developing treatments for cancer, for example, or eventually for producing transplant organs.

Uncertainty Principle
What is the Uncertainty Principle?
Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, known simply as the Uncertainty Principle, describes a fundamental limit to what is knowable about the world. This principle was first discovered by Werner Heisenberg in 1927. While at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Heisenberg conducted an experiment attempting to determine the position and velocity of an electron. What he discovered was that the more accurately the position of an electron could be known, the less we could know about its momentum. This means that in the quantum realm, the smallest realm of nature, there is an absolute limit to what can be known.
Understanding the Uncertainty Principle
In order to understand the earliest incarnation of the uncertainty principle, we have to consider the nature of measurement. When we see something in the macro realm, the level of physical objects that we can observe with the senses, it is because photons bounce off of the object and return to the eye. The photons carry information about what it has bounced off of, and this information is interpreted by our optical nerve or recorded by photographic imaging. So, for example, if we attempt to understand the position and velocity of a tennis ball, a stream of photons reflected off the tennis ball are recorded and allow us to gain information about it.
The key here is that the mass and velocity of photons are so miniscule with comparison to that of the tennis ball that they have a negligible effect on it. However, the picture is a bit different in the quantum realm. Heisenberg attempted to discover the position of an electron in a similar way – by bouncing photons off of it. However, the masses of photons and electrons are much more similar to one another. This means that bouncing a photon off of an electron will have a significant influence on its velocity. The energy from the photon is imparted to the electron, resulting in a change in velocity.
Taking this a step farther, different wavelengths of light have different levels of energy. Shorter wavelengths of light have higher amounts of energy. Photons travelling with a shorter wavelength will give a more accurate assessment of the position. At the same time, they impart more energy to the electron and cause a greater change in velocity. Lower wavelengths of light, since they carry less energy, would have less of an impact upon the velocity of the electron. However, they also resulted in a less accurate assessment of the electron’s position.
Heisenberg recognized that this uncertainty is related to the quantized nature of quantum particles. Light, for example, occurs in discrete packets that we know of as photons. This is true of all quantum particles. Electrons, neutrinos, protons, though they operate as waves, they are also present in quantized form as particles. This quantized nature is what creates the limits of certainty. Max Planck, in mathematical investigations into quantum particles, discovered that this limit could be described by a particular constant, a number which came to be known as Planck’s Constant. This is described by the equation: h = 6.626*10-34 J*s. Planck’s Constant is an essential element in the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle Equation.
Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle Equation
The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle Equation is the mathematical expression of the fact that the position and velocity of a particle cannot be known simultaneously. Furthermore, it shows that there is a definite relationship to how well each can be known relative to the other. This relationship is associated with Planck’s Constant, the quantized limit to action in the quantum realm.
There are three elements to the simplified Uncertainty Principle Equation. The first element, Δχ, symbolizes the uncertainty in position. Δρ, the second element, is associated with the uncertainty in velocity. The product of these two values is greater than or equal to ħ/2. ħ, known as h-bar, is a modification of Planck’s Constant. More specifically, it is Planck’s constant divided by 2π.
The Uncertainty Principle and the Observer Effect
It’s tempting to assign the uncertainty of a system to the effect of observation. In Heisenberg’s experiment, it was the impact of the photon that introduced greater uncertainty to the system. And, because of this, the uncertainty principle and the observer effect, the tendency for observation to change the state of a system, were considered synonymous even in academic circles. However, this is not the case.
In a more recent experiment by Aephram Steinberg at the University of Toronto, a more delicate form of measurement was used to determine information about photons. According to the Uncertainty Principle, all quantum particles are subject to an absolute limit about what can be known about their properties in a given moment. Steinberg’s team chose to measure the polarization of a photon along two planes. Just as with position and velocity, the degree of polarization along one plane is linked to the degree of polarization along the other. Therefore, the Uncertainty Principle dictates that both of these values cannot be known with exactness for a given moment.
Steinberg’s experiment first used a ‘weak’ measurement to determine the polarization along each plane. Next, a ‘strong’ measurement was used to determine the polarization along the first plane. This was to determine if the polarization of the first plane had been changed by the measurement of the second. It was discovered that, while there was some change in polarization, it was less than what was predicted as a result of observation. This is still above the absolute limit described by the uncertainty principle; however, it means that the uncertainty is a result of the inherent behavior of quantum particles rather than the influence of measurement itself.
A similar experiment was conducted in 2012 by Yuji Hasegawa. In an experiment at the Vienna University of Technology, Hasegawa measured groups of neutron spins. Just as with polarization or velocity and position, neutron spins are other linked properties of quantum particles. Therefore, they are subject to the Uncertainty Principle, meaning that it is not possible to know both spins at once. Just as with Steinberg’s experiment, the results indicated that the uncertainty was less than that which would result from the effects of measurement.
Just to be clear, the uncertainty detected in both of these experiments was still above the absolute limits, as described by Planck’s constant. The key here is that the uncertainty is not a result of observation. This means that Heisenberg’s original model of measurement-disturbance uncertainty is incorrect. Heisenberg’s observations set us on the path of recognizing the central property of the quantum realm. And yet, his interpretation of this property, an interpretation still present in many textbooks and taught in classes around the world, is inaccurate.
Implications of the Uncertainty Principle
Since early science was confined to the realm of the visible world, classical physics developed a mechanistic view. The Newtonian perspective held that the universe was like clockwork. Everything follows clear-cut laws. This means that things can be known and predicted, so long as enough is known about the elements involved. This is exactly the aspect of the world that quantum mechanics threw into confusion. Suddenly, there was a fundamental element of the world that could not be predicted and did not work like clockwork. Furthermore, this realm of uncertainty lay at the very foundation of matter. The entire observable world was built upon elements governed by this quantum uncertainty. And this was not simply a matter of theory, but apparent through experimentation.
Another result of Heisenberg’s work was the fact that the Bohr model of the atom was in error. Bohr theorized that electrons travelled in circular paths around the nucleus of an atom. Based on what we had observed in the visible realm, Bohr predicted a circular, unbroken orbit with a fixed radius and speed. However, since both velocity and position of any particle cannot be known simultaneously, it is impossible for the speed and radial position of an electron to be constant. This led to newer models which took into account wave mechanics and probabilistic positions. In short, the uncertainty principle was one of the first discoveries that ushered in the new era of quantum understanding.

One camera cage and accessories maker that appears not to receive the press coverage it deserves is LockCircle, a brand of the Brain Emo company based in Lombardy near Lake Como.
LockCircle is the only video accessories maker with its origins in Australia, specifically Broken Hill, thanks to Italian-Australian cinematographer/director Dante Cecchin, but the brand is sadly not represented in this country through an importer/distributor or resellers.
Perhaps that situation may change some day.
LockCircle HiPock, “The Pocket 4K Camera Cage”, designed by Dante Cecchin for the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.
Meanwhile LockCircle’s products are clearly well regarded enough to be represented in other countries by respected resellers including AbelCine, B&H, mtf, P+S Technik, The Flash Centre and Vocas.
Mr Cecchin’s product design inspirations include the Bolidist Movement pioneered by Italian designer Massimo Iosa Ghini, who characterizes Boldism as “a way of narrating the transition from materialety to drawing things in which the visual and media aspect prevails with respect to the object’s functional purpose”.
Mr Ghini was involved with the Memphis Group of architects and designers during the 1980s, and perhaps the many highly coloured products Memphis members designed may have influenced LockCircle’s product materials and coatings such as the bronze, grey and black anodized surfaces of the three HiPock elements and cages and the rarer, more wildly coloured limited editions and new product colour-ways sometimes seen on LockCircle’s Facebook page.
Special anodization colours and surface finishes
LockCircle Robot Skin Sony Alpha a7III camera cage.
LockCircle Robot Skin Panasonic Lumix GH5/GH5S.
LockCircle Robot Skin GH5 Red cage.
LockCircle Robot Skin GH5 Blue Professional X Bundle.
LockCircle Robot Skin GH5 Dura-T Professional X Bundle with unscratchable Mil-Spec DURA-T finish.
Mr Cecchin’s LockCircle has been one of the first camera cage makers off the mark to come up with accessories for the soon-to-be-released Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and has come up with three different cages or cage-like devices – Minimal Plate, Essential Plate and System Cage, all under the product name of HiPock.
As with his other camera cages, HiPock integrates intimately with LockCircle’s and camera accessories including MicroMega rigging, RodRocket titanium rods and rails, NoLux “photon trap” technology matte box system, MatBox professional matter box system, LockCircle ultra-secure camera body caps, LockPort camera cable savers, Prime Circle cinema lenses and filters and the Pro M.35 System of accessories for adapting stills photography lenses to use in cinematography.
The breadth and depth of LockCircle’s product system appears to obviate the need to ever go outside it in fully equipping many popular hybrid mirrorless cameras for professional video production.

Bolidism, the driving design philosophy behind LockCircle’s products.
Due to LockCircle being unrepresented in Australia I have not had the pleasure of seeing and trying any of its products in real life and neither do I know anyone here who owns and uses them, but I certainly hope to remedy that lack some day.
Perhaps Mr Cecchin may be persuaded to pay his birth country a visit to show off his products and share his clearly not inconsiderable achievements.
