In the wake of the TikTok ban and revival as a mouthpiece for fascist propaganda, as well as the downfall of Twitter and Facebook/Facebook-owned platforms to the same evils, I think now is a better time than ever to say LEARN HTML!!! FREE YOURSELVES FROM THE SHACKLES OF MAJOR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS AND EMBRACE THE INDIE WEB!!!
You can host a website on Neocities for free as long as it's under 1GB (which is a LOT more than it sounds like let me tell you) but if that's not enough you can get 50GB of space (and a variety of other perks) for only $5 a month.
And if you can't/don't want to pay for the extra space, sites like File Garden and Catbox let you host files for free that you can easily link into NeoCities pages (I do this to host videos on mine!) (It also lets you share files NeoCities wouldn't let you upload for free anyways, this is how I upload the .zip files for my 3DS themes on my site.)
Don't know how to write HTML/CSS? No problem. W3schools is an invaluable resource with free lessons on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and a whole slew of other programming languages, both for web development and otherwise.
Want a more traditional social media experience? SpaceHey is a platform that mimics the experience of 2000s MySpace
Struggling to find independent web pages that cater to your interests via major search engines? I've got you covered. Marginalia and Wiby are search engines that specifically prioritize non-commercial content. Marginalia also has filters that let you search for more specific categories of website, like wikis, blogs, academia, forums, and vintage sites.
Maybe you wanna log off the modern internet landscape altogether and step back into the pre-social media web altogether, well, Protoweb lets you do just that. It's a proxy service for older browsers (or really just any browser that supports HTTP, but that's mostly old browsers now anyways) that lets you visit restored snapshots of vintage websites.
Protoweb has a lot of Geocities content archived, but if you're interested in that you can find even more old Geocities sites over on the Geocities Gallery
And really this is just general tip-of-the-iceberg stuff. If you dig a little deeper you can find loads more interesting stuff out there. The internet doesn't have to be a miserable place full of nothing but doomposting and targeted ads. The first step to making it less miserable is for YOU, yes YOU, to quit spending all your time on it looking at the handful of miserable websites big tech wants you to spend all your time on.
#this is a side point so it's going here but I really think tech literacy should be a requirement in schools like math grammar history etc.#we live in a world so dominated by the stuff and yet a majority of the population does not understand it at even the most fundamental level#tiktok#tiktok ban#indie web#neocities#web development#current events#twitter#facebook#meta#amazon

I remember a viral video that was (non-seriously) posting the benefits for having various mental illnesses, and the one the guy gave for anorexia was "saving money." now I know he wasn't being serious, but come on man 🙄 sure you might initially save money from like, not buying enough groceries I guess?? but that assumes that you don't ever binge and that later on you don't end up in therapy, in treatment, or in the goddamn hospital.
my last ed day program (php for those who know what that is) had the low, low rate of $1400/day, and I had to pay $50/day out of pocket for housing on top of that. I'm gonna lowball this total because residential costs even more and I was in res for part of my treatment stay, and I'm not including extras like labs, but going with $1450/day for three months (let's say 90 days) is over $130,000. that was also my fifth time in treatment-- with keeping the same $1450 rate for simplicity, we're coming in at just over $650k for all five stays, and don't even get me started on lost wages from missing work for treatment. thank god I have good insurance 😭
oh, and bear in mind that this number does not include any outpatient services (therapy, dietitian appts, psychiatrists, meds, primary care, intensive outpatient programs that are often recommended as aftercare upon discharge, etc) or hospital stays (of which I haven't had so I don't have available data). that being said, even if you go the "cheap" route of, say, a once weekly session with a therapist and a dietitian, that's ~$300 a week for both. yearly that'll run you $15,000, and I have met approximately zero(0) people who are fully recovered after just one year.
but yeah, you save soooo much money by starving yourself :)
#good grief#steph's rambles#i spent way longer on this post than i originally intended... oops#ed recovery

if pet hotel had little games and activities like neopets or club penguin puffle games, what would they be?
whatever would be within my skill level to program i guess
i think i would start out with a game where the pet is holding a basket beneath some trees and you have to catch falling fruit by moving the pet left and right. sounds nice and simple enough, and once i had enough of a variety of simple games i would then feel free to try and experiment with something more complex and take as much time as i need since the simple games are able to fill that space where something needs to be right now
if i made this a website-based virtual pet game like neopets and flight rising are, something that's gonna be tricky and would probably take me a long time is i would have to learn how to make an html5 application (which is what these games would be if this was the case, since flash is dead) that would be able to read pet information and user information from a database so the pet could appear in the minigame, be able to modify values like the amount of money the player has so the player can earn money by playing these games, and this database needs to be able to be read and written to by both these minigames and by regular pages like a player's profile page where you'd be able to see your current money balance, for instance. The only experience I have in regards to creating an html5 application is running the html dist Gradle command that libGDX has, which just converts all of your java code into javascript as its own contained thing when for this I would need to make something that actually has the ability to talk to other things. I would have to learn a ton of php in order to make this a thing as well, which I don't have a lot of experience with either.
If I were to turn the pet hotel into a fully-fledged automated and programmable game with my current knowledge and skillset, I think I'd have an easier time using libGDX and Java Swing to make it, and then people would have to download a jar file for it off of itch.io in order to play it. I feel like more people would play it if the game was entirely website-based because people don't really like to download things, which is kind of understandable, but learning web development is really hard and from what little I do know about it I'm kind of bad at it. I took a class where I learned how web sockets work in Java so I think I could be able to make something that connects online like this, but I would have to rent some server space in order to do this so the pet hotel would become something that starts actually costing me money to run if I did this. Also I already have a full-time job so the progress I would make on this would be pretty slow, and sometimes I struggle to muster up the motivation to even just make regular art during the time that I'm not working because my brain just kind of sucks like that. So for now i just run this thing that pretends to be a video game but is actually not because my brain prefers the instant gratification of watching youtube videos and playing video games that other people have already made instead of using that time to learn how to make a video game myself

hello izzy loa! i started watching supersimpledev's html and css youtube tutorial and wanted to follow along. i've been taking notes and sometimes im scared i'm wasting time on the video when there are many other resources, for example, that freecodecamp video you linked, the 21hours one and i saw another blogger is watching the brocode video.
would it be bad to switch videos even though i've already taken notes to see how other people teach it? idk i feel like if i keep switching i wont actually learn anything.
also - do you still recommend that 21 hour video? how do you feel about beginners learning java first?
Hiya 💗
🔍 "would it be bad to switch videos even though i've already taken notes to see how other people teach it? idk i feel like if i keep switching i wont actually learn anything"
There is no shame/guilt in switching between video resources. I do this all the time and I even would recommend other people to do the same! It's like researching for an essay; teachers encourage you to have lots of references in your essay so you can make a more developed point of view. This is the same! I don't rely on one resource because there could be a bunch more out there that can 1) explain things more plainly 2) go in much more detail and 3) show tips and tricks that I can use in the future.
Like I mentioned in the resources I made (resource 1 | resources 2) I talk about having multiple resources to help you learn. Literally, for me, imagine I wanted to learn PHP right now, I would look online for:
Free PDF PHP book
YouTube Tutorials
Website/Articles on learning PHP like W3School
(If I am really committed) Find a Udemy course on PHP to follow along
And for each, I would have like 1 or 2 places/books/videos to refer back to when stuck! So, yes, of course, it's okay! If you truly get stuck at the abundance of resources and how to study from each one, build a study schedule for the resources, not just the subject e.g.
9-10am - YouTube video resources
10-11am - PDF Book resources
11-12pm - Websites/Articles
Personally, I just do my schedule by subject and use the resources simultaneously. The key thing is don't overwhelm yourself with resources. Pick the ones that help YOU not because "oh it helps this person so I'll use it too even though it confuses me" no.
Also, That feeling of wasting time is okay, it's natural when you want to learn so much in so little time, but that's why I stress about taking your time. If you don't, you'll be like scanning a book - not actually taking things into your brain. That will result in you forgetting and having to start back at square one. Learn at a pace that's right and gives you a good time for your brain to comprehend what you're learning!
🔍 "do you still recommend that 21 hour video?"
Yes, I learnt a lot from that video and really laid down the foundations for me then I used other resources to build on top of that!
🔍 "how do you feel about beginners learning java first?"
That's your personal choice, I don't have a stance on if it's a good first language to learn! Java is used to all sorts so if it aligns with what you want to be building in the future then go right ahead! I recently was looking at University courses for Computer Science and a lot of them teach either Java or C++ as the students' first programming language so yeah!
Hope this helps! 💗

04/03/2024 || Day 19 (dop)
TLDR:
🔸 practised ASL fingerspelling
🔸 started learning PHP
🔸 started learning Blender
🔸 sketched a page in my sketchbook
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Work
Volunteering - Last week was tiring, but fun! The event that I was volunteering at focused on people with intellectual disabilities, and I was part of the health screening section (though I was merely recording data, not conducting the screening). This event had people from all over Canada too. Because of that I had to brush up my french skills, which I haven't used in nearly 8+ years, so that was a struggle. What was less of a struggle was communicating with ASL!! I had one person who was deaf and when I realized it I was able to sign to him! Mind you, when he signed back I didn't 100% understand him because I was too focused on what I was signing, and I definitely made a few mistakes, but I'm still really happy!
5in5weeks - Ok, @izicodes made a challenge 2 years ago to spend 5 weeks learning 5 programming languages, and I thought that was a super good idea and that it would help with my burnout. (link to the project can be found here). Now, I'm gonna be taking weekends off (and I'm out of town for the next few days later this week), so I won't be doing this daily, but I'm gonna try my best not to take random days off. That being said, I'm starting this off with PHP! I covered some basics today by watching a youtube playlist, and I probably won't get through all 100+ videos in a week, but my aim with this challenge is to get the basics done and create something simple. After this challenge, I'll delve deeper into the languages that I like.
💌 Day 1: What are you most looking forward in learning PHP?
I had to use PHP for a class about 2 years ago and I asked my friend to help me (because I had no idea what was going on and it wasn't taught in class), and he basically did the work. Now, I keep on seeing PHP as a requirement for job applications, so I decided to finally get started on learning it. I actually applied for a job half a year ago and they emailed me asking if I knew PHP, and having to say no made me feel like garbage. So...time to change that.
Art - I've been wanting to delve into 3D art for a while now. 3 years ago I looked up the classic donut tutorial for Blender, but that's it. Now I'm gonna do the same thing, but this time progress past the tutorial and actually make things on the regular with it. Hopefully I will be as obsessed with it as I was when I was first learning how to draw, and just pump out as much as I can (quality doesn't matter at the starting point). There's just so much to the interface for Blender that you need to learn...it's overwhelming and intimidating.

hi ! im curious , you made all these post or isome kind of program generates them ?
Hi! and thanks for taking an interest!
I reblog some stuff and manually post some others, but the majority of my posts are generated through php pages I run from the command line on my Windows machine using the Oath protocol and Tumbr's API. My foobar musicplayer is connected to the last FM scrobbler, and I access their API, get my feed, and alter it with my saved commentary and images, then automatically post it to tumblr. I'm also hooked up to Spotify (and they use curl not Oauth) so I can post music links as well. For a while I was doing YouTube videos as well, but pulled it down, as I need to increase the accuracy of their search.
90% of the code I wrote myself, though I'll admit I don't really understand the actual OAuth transfer that well, those sections are straight copied and pasted :-)

State of Devs: A Survey for Every Developer
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/state-of-devs-a-survey-for-every-developer/
State of Devs: A Survey for Every Developer
I don’t know if I should say this on a website devoted to programming, but I sometimes feel like *lowers voice* coding is actually the least interesting part of our lives.
After all, last time I got excited meeting someone at a conference it was because we were both into bouldering, not because we both use React. And The Social Network won an Oscar for the way it displayed interpersonal drama, not for its depiction of Mark Zuckerberg’s PHP code.
Yet for the past couple years, I’ve been running developer surveys (such as the State of JS and State of CSS) that only ask about code. It was time to fix that.
A new kind of survey
The State of Devs survey is now open to participation, and unlike previous surveys it covers everything except code: career, workplace, but also health, hobbies, and more.
I’m hoping to answer questions such as:
What are developers’ favorite recent movies and video games?
What kind of physical activity do developers practice?
How much sleep are we all getting?
But also address more serious topics, including:
What do developers like about their workplace?
What factors lead to workplace discrimination?
What global issues are developers most concerned with?
Reaching out to new audiences
Another benefit from branching out into new topics is the chance to reach out to new audiences.
It’s no secret that people who don’t fit the mold of the average developer (whether because of their gender, race, age, disabilities, or a myriad of other factors) often have a harder time getting involved in the community, and this also shows up in our data.
In the past, we’ve tried various outreach strategies to help address these imbalances in survey participation, but the results haven’t always been as effective as we’d hoped.
So this time, I thought I’d try something different and have the survey itself include more questions relevant to under-represented groups, asking about workplace discrimination:
As well as actions taken in response to said discrimination:
Yet while obtaining a more representative data sample as a result of this new focus would be ideal, it isn’t the only benefit.
The most vulnerable among us are often the proverbial canaries in the coal mine, suffering first from issues or policies that will eventually affect the rest of the community as well, if left unchecked.
So, facing these issues head-on is especially valuable now, at a time when “DEI” is becoming a new taboo, and a lot of the important work that has been done to make things slightly better over the past decade is at risk of being reversed.
The big questions
Finally, the survey also tries to go beyond work and daily life to address the broader questions that keep us up at night:
There’s been talk in recent years about keeping the workplace free of politics. And why I can certainly see the appeal in that, in 2025, it feels harder than ever to achieve that ideal. At a time when people are losing rights and governments are sliding towards authoritarianism, should we still pretend that everything is fine? Especially when you factor in the fact that the tech community is now a major political player in its own right…
So while I didn’t push too far in that direction for this first edition of the survey, one of my goals for the future is to get a better grasp of where exactly developers stand in terms of ideology and worldview. Is this a good idea, or should I keep my distance from any hot-button issues? Don’t hesitate to let me know what you think, or suggest any other topic I should be asking about next time.
In the meantime, go take the survey, and help us get a better picture of who exactly we all are!

Websites Development: What You Need to Know and How to Get Started
If you're looking to build a website, chances are you’ve got a lot of questions.
Where do you start? How do you ensure your site is effective? What makes a website stand out?
Let’s dive into the world of websites development and break it down, so you can get the most out of your online presence. Whether you're a small business owner, an entrepreneur, or just someone who wants to launch their personal brand, understanding the basics of website development is crucial.
First things first: Websites Development is all about building and maintaining websites. It's a mix of design, coding, content management, and user experience to create a functional, engaging, and visually appealing site. But where do you even begin?
Request a WordPress Site Audit to Get Started
One way to hit the ground running is by requesting a WordPress site audit. It’s like getting a check-up for your site. You’ll get a clear picture of what’s working, what needs fixing, and what areas are lacking.
A WordPress audit can show you things like:
Site speed
Mobile responsiveness
SEO optimisation
Security issues
Content quality
With this data, you can make informed decisions about how to improve your site and enhance user experience. It’s a simple step that can make a world of difference.
The Different Aspects of Website Development
Website development is more than just writing code. It’s about creating a site that people love to visit. Here’s a breakdown of key elements involved in website development:
Planning and Strategy
Every successful website starts with a clear plan. This includes knowing who your target audience is, what the purpose of the site is, and how you want visitors to interact with it. Without a strategy, your site could become another abandoned page on the internet.
Design
Design isn’t just about how your site looks; it’s about how users feel when they interact with it. A well-designed website should be intuitive, easy to navigate, and visually engaging. If the design doesn’t appeal to your audience, they’ll leave.
Development (Coding)
This is where things get technical. It’s the process of actually building the site using programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. Depending on the platform (WordPress, Shopify, etc.), some elements might already be built for you, but you still need a solid development plan to make sure everything functions well.
Content Management
Content is king, right? Well, it’s true. Whether it’s blogs, product descriptions, images, or videos, content drives engagement. Having a system to manage this content is crucial, and this is where content management systems (CMS) like WordPress shine.
Testing and Launching
Before going live, you need to test everything. Test for bugs, broken links, and mobile compatibility. It’s also essential to make sure your website loads fast because users won’t wait around for slow sites to load.
Maintenance
Once your site is live, you can’t just forget about it. Regular updates, security checks, and content improvements are all part of keeping your website in top shape.
Why Website Development is Essential for Your Business
Let’s talk about why investing in proper website development matters. Your website is often the first point of contact for potential customers. If it’s clunky, outdated, or hard to use, you’re not going to make a good impression.
A well-developed website can:
Build trust and credibility with your audience
Improve your SEO (search engine optimisation) rankings
Help you convert visitors into customers or leads
Give you control over your online brand
Common Website Development Mistakes to Avoid
Building a website is exciting, but it’s easy to make mistakes if you don’t know what you’re doing. Here are some common pitfalls to watch out for:
Ignoring Mobile Users
More and more people are browsing websites on their phones. If your site isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re likely losing a significant amount of traffic. A responsive design is crucial.
Overloading Your Site with Content
Quality over quantity. Avoid stuffing your site with irrelevant information just to "fill it up." Keep your content concise, valuable, and engaging.
Not Optimising for Speed
Slow websites are a huge turn-off. People don’t have time to wait for pages to load. Optimising images, using caching, and minimising unnecessary scripts can speed up your site.
Neglecting SEO
Without SEO, your website could get buried on the second or third page of Google’s search results. Make sure your site is optimised for search engines so people can find it.
Forgetting About Analytics
It’s important to track your website’s performance. Tools like Google Analytics help you understand your visitors’ behaviour and make data-driven decisions for improvements.
Request a WordPress Site Audit to Fine-Tune Your Website
If you’re still unsure about your site’s health, requesting a WordPress site audit can give you the clarity you need. A professional audit will give you actionable insights to enhance your website’s performance, SEO, security, and user experience.
Choosing the Right Tools for Website Development
Not all websites are created equal, and the tools you use can make a big difference in how efficient your development process is. Here are some tools you’ll want to consider:
WordPress
WordPress is one of the most popular CMS platforms, and for a good reason. It’s user-friendly, highly customisable, and has a massive support community. Perfect for beginners and experienced developers alike.
Wix or Squarespace
These platforms are great for beginners who don’t want to deal with coding. They offer drag-and-drop functionality, which makes building a website easy and quick.
Shopify
If you’re looking to build an online store, Shopify is a great choice. It’s designed specifically for e-commerce, with plenty of templates and tools to help you sell products online.
Webflow
Webflow is perfect for those who want complete design control but don’t want to get into heavy coding. It’s ideal for designers who want to build complex websites visually.
Final Thoughts on Websites Development
Website development is an essential aspect of any modern business strategy. Whether you’re starting a blog, an e-commerce site, or a personal portfolio, having a solid foundation in development will ensure your site stands out.
And remember, if you ever feel stuck or unsure about how to optimise your site, don’t hesitate to request a WordPress site audit. With a professional audit, you can make sure your site is heading in the right direction. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to improve an existing site, there’s always room for growth.
Investing time in your website’s development is investing in your future success. So, start building a website that not only looks good but works for you.
