This is completely random but I just saw a tiktok where someone said "Isn't it crazy that we have to wait for male idols to go to the military to finally see them be a healthy weight?" and it got me thinking

First of all how fucked up that is of course

But also do you think idols feel some sort of relief when it's time to enlist? Because they get to be away from the cameras?

Or is the negative impact enlistment can have on their career just too scary for them to look forward to it?

And how do Korean fans feel about it?

(cause for the rest of us enlistment day is like a catastrophe, but I'm really trying to look for positive sides to it and maybe idols being able to EAT is one of them... damn the bar is in hell...)

I remember that back in 2022/Guerrilla on the official Ateez website Mingi's weight was listed as 60kg. Yeosang who is 10cm shorter than him was listed as 57kg. That sounds crazy to me

I am 165cm, 20cm shorter than Mingi, and I weight the SAME as him 🙃 part of my weight is muscles bc I'm a swimmer, but Mingi is muscular too? He's a damn athlete

It's absolutely insane that my healthiest weight is the same of that of a muscular adult man that's 20cm taller than me 🙃

So many fans look at idols in the military and are like "omg he's gotten huge" and I'm like?? that's an average muscular man, he's just getting FED 😭

I'm all for having kpop (which is inherently light and fun and silly in a good way) be the entry point for people learning about Korea and discussing larger issues affecting their lives but this . . . is a little too much.

I think even explaining to someone why not having to be camera ready during military service is probably NOT A PRIORITY to any man with even a modicum of sense who is about to enter into mandatory military service in a country that is in a semi-active state of war in a highly volatile geopolitical location is something I shouldn't have to do for free. Be serious right now.

To answer the question as asked - I think all Idols would prefer to stay on their strict diets and pursue their art and be on camera than have to donate 2+ years of their precious youth to active military duty. This mandatory military service is a heavy sacrifice that Korean society extracts from our men and as a patriotic Korean woman I am both proud of them and always feel a little bit guilty that nothing like that is demanded of me. When anyone in my family or social circle is doing the military service we're all worried about them and for them, because they can DIE OR BE MAIMED. Because it's MILITARY DUTY. In SOUTH KOREA. Which is continguous with NORTH KOREA. And very close to CHINA and TAIWAN The idea that a professional dancer who keeps his weight low for his art would be somehow relieved to lose time during his peak performance years so he can .... eat more food (??!??) is an astonishingly strange take that has to be coming from some very disconnected echo chamber on the internet. Come out of there. It's damaging your brain.

in honour of being promoted to Deputy Stage Manager in my school's theatre department, top gun high school/sixth form au:

Dr Kazansky rules the drama department with an iron fist. always wearing black turtlenecks. never seen without his glasses, his coffee, and his terrifying glare (which earned him the moniker Dr Iceman). do not show up to rehearsals if you don't know your lines. death be upon the poor students who fuck around during tech and dress, because they will find out. he loves the crew tho.

Mr Call-Me-Mav Mitchell is the head of sports. you name it, he's played it, and he could absolutely give you pointers, also, do you want a protein bar with that? it's chocolate flavoured :) even the kids who Hate (capital H) sports love him. he is sunshine and adrenaline in human form. endless energy. no one knows why he is called maverick, but even the principal does it, so.

Mr Kerner is the principal. he is also the only person who can interrupt rehearsals and survive. dr kazansky loves him. inexplicably, maverick hates him. nough said.

Jake Seresin is the school's golden child, not even because he's Kazansky's nephew. he’s head boy. he’s on the school’s football/rugby team. he writes regular articles for the internal magazines. and this year, he’s playing Orpheus in the school’s production of Hadestown. everyone thinks it’s nepotism. it is and it’s not, jake just lost a bet to his Uncle Tom, and must now reap the consequences to said uncle’s delight.

Bradley Bradshaw has been stage crew since he was thirteen and an overworked runner, thank you very much. it’s his final show, he’s the DSM, and if fucking seresin ruins this for him, he will riot. dr kazansky should never let that happen. however, this is the same man who, last year, laughed when revealing that a screen on stage had turned off and bradley had to go on stage during the show to fix it. hm. maybe bradley should have re-thought his life choices. also: the turntable. the goddamn turntable.

maverick keeps turning up to rehearsals and trying to help because his favourite (cough only cough) godson and his favourite player are both interested in this stuff, so he should at least try, right? kazansky hates it until he doesn’t. kerner thinks it’s all fucking hilarious. bradley is embarrassed but its kinda endearing do NOT tell him i said that.

kazansky and maverick both bare witness to A Moment between their respective pseudo sons and decide the two simply must get together for their sakes and also so they never inflict that on another person ever.

theon's thoughts of his existing black wardrobe when considering the watch has been talked of plenty, but let's not ignore the rest of this fantasy which is imo even funnier. bc a) he remembers jon snow joining the nw as a selling point but fails to consider what it would mean to meet jon again after taking wf and supposedly killing bran and rickon and b) he describes it as a life of honor but assumes he can bed wildling women, which watchmen usually see as the most dishonorable kind of sex, not just patronizing the whores south of the wall but sleeping with the enemy. his newly-turned and fleeting ambitions of captaining a ship at eastwatch, rising to first ranger and even lord commander look downright logical and realistic compared with forgetting the celibacy vows and the motive he's just given jon snow--who never really liked him to begin with--to oathbreak by murdering him on sight. (tho, funnily enough he is kinda foreshadowing jon's soon approaching experience of sex with a wildling woman and facing accusations that his black cloak was indeed turned, even after rising to the position of lord commander. biggest difference is jon did not plan and go looking for a wildling lover, was unaware of his own possible princehood, and ygritte likely would not care about jon's royalty except to joke about it if they did know.)

I will always imagine various podcast characters as being either completely average or scruffy, but not Arthur. This man is a pretty boy, straight out of a Leyendecker painting. Pure charm, pure refinement, pure elegance, you look at him and expect a “how do you do” as he leans back in pinstripe pants and a well tailored shirt and some nice oxfords

But he is also very much a creature in human form. Just take that Leyedecker man and smear him in some mud and filth and call it enrichment. That refined elegance gets a glint of danger and more than some slight insanity as he begs for a chance to aim for the eyes.

Sure, he’ll still say “how do you do,” but he’ll also end that sentence calling you a fuckface

More mentally ill characters in sci-fi, in fantasy, in romance and fun and high stakes situations and everything in between, as the heroes, as complex individuals, multifaceted and treated with respect, not having their needs and differences ignored or skirted around but, again, not having them be their only trait or plot point/entire premise! Please, I'm begging, on my hands and knees, there's a place for these topics and characters in realistic, reflective and literary fiction, yeah, but there's also a place in those magical, mystical, action packed, mysterious and alien worlds, give them to ME

Idk where all these takes thinking that Helaena was indifferent to Jaehaerys's death come from. She literally said she was sad about it. Her rationalizing that she shouldn't be is very realistic grief processing for a neurodivergent person. I've worked with children on the spectrum who will tell me that they're angry or sad and are trying not to be because they know it'll make others even more upset or because a scraped knee heals eventually and all these other rationalizations.

But they are upset. And like what Alicent did with Helaena, you have to tell them having emotions by itself isn't a bad thing. Most of the time, it's simply something you can't control or reason away. Alicent was doing well to tell her daughter that she had a right to her grief — that she shouldn't use "other people have it worse" as a way to push it down.

Alicent has her own wonky processing by believing it was her fault that Jaehaerys died ('the gods are punishing me for my sins. an unrelated accident happened because i, personally, have done awful things' aka classic catholic guilt). So she was seeking absolution from her father who refused to give it to her.

But Helaena does. Helaena forgives her. In a way, I interpreted this scene as both of them comforting each other in the ways they needed. When Alicent shrugs off her own grief and begins talking about how she's more worried about Helaena, her daughter tells her what she wanted to hear by giving her that absolution.

Could the scene have made it clearer that this mother and daughter are helping each other with their radically different ways of processing grief? Could I have misinterpreted the scene? Of course. But as it was, it was pretty clear that Helaena was sad about Jaehaerys.

In Game of God everyone is so scared of Dean going back to the way he was before Kansas City, including Dean himself.

I think that book captures very well the utterly stress of the circumstances and how it builds in every character. They are cranky, they are afraid, they are defensive, they haven't sleep properly, they are in the middle of an siege on a demonic version of a zombie apocalypse, their friends are dying, some of them are betraying them, they don't know what is happening...

So all the hope Dean gave them after that night in Kansas City? That's what triggers the fear.

They remember improving Chitaqua, learning to do more things, learning to trust in others and to trust their own capabilities. They remember Cas sober and proud of them, worried about them, a man they feared and now they care deeply about. They remember Dean actually seeing them and maybe that's the worst part.

Even if they don't know it, they can feel it.

Dean showing them how to take their lives back and actively live them. Dean reading their reports and stopping them to talk. Dean among them and with them.

When Dean starts acting a bit like that again...

Chitaqua is so aware of who and where they were and who and they are and what they can become, good and bad options. They had always needed Dean, but now they want him. Now they're scared to lose them not only because he's their way to survive it. That's not just the face of their army, he is Dean!!! They don't want to lose Dean!!!!

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the conflicts involving Dean and Chitaqua in Game of God are delightful to read.

It speaks not of damage, but of the desperation born out of the strength of their bonds.
