i've always wondered about cubones-- is it true they all wear the skull of their mothers? are they really their own species or are they an evolutionary branch of a different kind of pokemon?

it is indeed untrue that they all wear the skull of their mothers! after all, a species which could only ever have one offspring, in which the mother was fated to die in childbirth could only ever decline in population. you may have also heard of the idea that cubone are 'born' when a mother kangaskhan dies, leaving behind an orphaned baby which wears the skull of the dead kangaskhan. neither of these are true... but neither of them are entirely untrue, either.

the short answer is that cubone and marowak are their own species, and cubone's skull helmet does not necessarily come from its dead mother. this species is a marsupial- pouch-bearing mammals (as opposed to placental mammals, like us)- and only has one baby at a time. the way marsupials are born is really neat- the baby, called a joey, is born at an absolutely tiny size and in an underdeveloped state. like, SERIOUSLY undeveloped- it's little more than an eraserhead baby with arms, less than an inch long.

look at that. look at that fucking thing. this little meat gummy bear uses its tiny little arms to grapple all the way up to the teats in the pouch, and basically latches on like a lamprey for over half a year. the baby drinks and grows and drinks and grows til it's large enough to leave the pouch. it'll return to the pouch regularly for maybe a month after it first leaves, but eventually grows up enough to leave for good. after this, the mother marowak will often almost immediately begin to grow another joey.

it's at this point, just after leaving the pouch, that the cubone joey will don its iconic helmet. the skull it selects can indeed be from a marowak, even its deceased mother as has been reported in some infrequent cases, but it isn't always- any appropriately-sized skull will do, with species depending on what pokemon live nearby. the skull is sometimes from a prey item of the parent, but is also often simply scavenged. the cubone will swap out its helmet a few times as it grows before it evolves. the skull becomes part of the individual's body when it evolves into marowak, changing shape and fitting perfectly to the head, unable to be removed ever again.

now, what does this have to do with kanghaskhan? kangaskhan and cubone/marowak aren't the same species, but they are closely related. additionally, their ranges often overlap- this is true in kanto, unova, kalos, and alola. in these areas, cubone will often don kangaskhan skulls if given the opportunity. furthermore, kangaskhan are sometimes known to care for orphaned or lost young of other pokemon species (or perhaps more legendarily, lost human children), and it seems that due to their close relation it isn't extremely uncommon to see a kangaskhan mother care for a baby cubone, perhaps adding more fire to the rumor.

4. who was your first favorite character when you initially got into your f/o’s source content? was it your f/o from the very beginning?

OK SO i first started playing pokemon when i was like... 9? i had gotten a copy of pkmn platinum bc a family friend found a ds cartridge with a torn off label on the sidewalk randomly. and my first fave was technically barry! idk what it was but i was like hehe barry time :3 (although roark was a close second, which is ironic given he's my buddy now LOL) i technically knew bill in college when i finally had a chance to play more than just platinum (which i lost that cartridge ages ago. F) but i didn't know him until i watched my bf play let's go pikachu. whatever fucking juice they put in that cutscene was NUTS because both i and my boyfriend saw him and were like WHY IS HE HOT??? that was in like. feb 2022? bill's actually the f/o that convinced me to make a selfship sideblog so like wahoo! it's. really funny that bill sparked me really entering the selfship community despite me having selfshipped since i was like 6 in terms of the kanto games though... yeah he was probably my first kanto-appearing crush LOL (distinguishing that bc he's not kantonian he's from johto <3)

9. if your f/o has been represented in more than one way (i.e. in a book AND a movie, in a movie and then recasted for a reboot later, etc.), which version of them is your favorite?

ok so bill appears in like... the kanto games (rgb, frlg, lgpe), the johto games (gsc, hgss), the anime (like once in indigo league), and in the manga (pokespe + a few others) the one that made me fall in love with him was the lgpe version, BUT i will say i love that crystal and frlg gave us more lore ON bill. crystal gave us lore on his dad that he doesn't like (for being a deadbeat iirc) and frlg has the whole fact checker where i learn he is a fellow lactose intolerant sdfhskj he doesn't really do much in any of his media except pokespe to my knowledge, and from what bits and bobs i know i think he's pretty neat (i love the southern accent that is also present in the games a bit but goes HARDER in the manga) and also i love the idea of him actually having like. more plot appearance than just one time (also what he and daisy kind of have going on seems a little cute. i won't even lie to myself) fun fact did you know in one manga his wife literally turned into mew. more notably that he had a wife in the first place (and no it wasn't me. i know i'm shocked as well)

10. if you could change one thing about your f/o’s source content, would you? what would you change?

ok. i would probably make him more involved maybe i'm just thinking wishfully bc of the manga knowledge i have but in the johto games (or kanto) i wish he had more to do with trying to stop the resurrection of team rocket given he was the one in pokespe who pushed for stricter gym leader guidelines once several gym leaders were outed as part of team rocket. like idk he feels like he should have more relevance in the games and he just....DOESN'T. IDK please just give him more than two seconds of screen time nintendo i BEG of you

Chapter One: New Game

New Game selected. Booting up ...

"Hello!" Came a cheery voice as a bluish green light filled the screen and a light tune filled the room where the voice was. An older looking man in a lab coat with a black shirt and brown pants flickered into frame. "Welcome to the world of Pokemon! I am Oak, a Pokemon Professor. This," he pulled a ball from a high table and showed the camera, the top half was red with the other was white and a gray band at it's center with a protruding button were visible, "is a pokeball. Within this container is a Pokemon. Observe."

The ball was tossed a few feet into the air causing its colors to spin before it opened and a stream of light shot out. The light struck the floor, where it began to spread before taking a vague form before dispersing to reveal an upright orange lizard pokemon with small claws on it's hands. It's eyes were green and the flame on it's tail burned brightly.

"Charaaa!" The creature cried, it's green eyes holding a determined fire in them.

"Within our world, some see these creatures are seen as pets. Others, known as a broad class of people called Trainers, see these creatures as companions to battle against other Trainers and Pokemon alike." The man said, stepping closer to the lizard. "This creature here is called a Charmander. It is one of three pokemon available to new Trainers."

He picked the two remaining pokeballs from the table and tossed them into the air, the camera following the spheres. Two more Pokemon appeared; one was an upright blue turtle with a yellow casing on its stomach the led to a white side along the base of a red shell whose light purple eyes were friendly. While the other to appear was a quadaped blue creature with darker blue lumps on its body and a large green seed-like object growing from its back, large red eyes held a battle ready expression as light reflected off of it's fang.

"Saaaur!" Cried the strange seedling creature.

"Squir!" Announced the turtle.

"Chaa!" Repeated the lizard.

The professor appeared back in the frame. "These creatures; Bulbasuar, Charmander, and Squirtle are available to new Trainers of the Kanto region." The camera panned out to show the Pokemon and professor.

"Please tell us your name and the name of your Rival," a boy with red hair walked into frame from behind the man, wearing a white sweater with dark gray pants, "so we can go out into the world of Pokemon!"

"Charlie!" The man appeared back into frame. "Soon you'll embark on your own adventure, filled with tough oponents and challenges beyond that. You and I will meet soon. Let's go!"

Charlie awoke to a softly playing tune on her television, which annoyed her until she turned it off. She got out of bed, already dressed for the day ahead, wearing light pink shoes, black stockings that led to a yellow skirt, a blue tank top and a hat was soon placed on her head.

She yawned once before grabbing her bag and going downstairs. Her mother was sitting at the table, watching television.

She walked over to the television.

Two boys are walking along railroad tracks!

She turned to her mother. "Their awfully far from home." A smile was on her face.

Her mother nodded simply. "Yes, they are. But all children have to leave home some day." She turned to Charlie. "I think you should hurry along, the professor says you can't be late today."

Charlie nodded. "Yes mother." She got up from the table and left out the front door.

She smiled, walking across the small porch and down the steps stopping at the dirt path beneath her feet, having walked along it many times before. She followed it, occasionally turning every now and then. She came to the lab, but looked past it to the tall grass that bordered her small town of Pallet.

Everyone knows you can't go into the tall grass without a Pokemon. But, maybe just a few steps wouldn't hurt. Charlie reasoned, walking past the lab and towards the tall grass. She barely made it three steps, when she heard:

"Hey! Don't go out!" The voice made her stop and turn around, to see the man from the television rushing towards her with a stern expression on his face. "What were you thinking? Wild Pokemon live in tall grass. You need your own Pokemon for your protection."

"I know!" Charlie said, adjusting her bag. "I just wanted to know what the grass felt like.."

The man sighed. "Follow me!"

He led Charlie away from the tall grass and in to the lab, past his two aids that were walking about, through the space between the bookshelves, to a table with three pokeballs on it. A boy was already there, stomping his feet in boredom as they approached.

"Gramps, I'm fed up with waiting!" He announced, stomping his feet again.

The man looked confused at the boy. "Hmm, Rival? I told you to come by later." He turned towards Charlie. "Charlie, in these three pokeballs contains three species of Pokemon not found in the wild. In my old age, I have only three left. Go ahead, choose one!"

Rival stomped his feet again. "Gramps! What about me?"

"Be patience, Rival." The man said to his grandson. "You'll get one later."

Charlie ignored them, walking to the table. Hmm.. Decisions, decisions.. She read the information on them.

The Grass/Poison-Type Bulbasaur: the plant pokemon. This pokemon is easy to raise and it's dual typing is preferred by most Trainers.

The Fire-Type Charmander: the lizard pokemon. It should be raised patiently, for playing with fire recklessly is dangerous.

The Water-Type Squirtle: the tiny turtle pokemon. After birth it's back hardens into a hard shell, thus this pokemon preferred by Trainers who want a strong defensive pokemon.

Charlie hummed, looking over the pokeballs again. "I choose.."

If I may ask, what about characters portrayed as older? Like for example the protags of the Pkmn games? If a character is canonically a minor but the mun writes them as older, is that okay?

[it’s a slippery slope and i’m not sure where i stand in that gray area. aging up a character to explore them as an adult is okay at best w/ me but doing it expressly to explore them sexually is very, very uncomfortable. I understand Many pokemon protags, following the canon timeline (RGB -> Sword/Shield) are *canonically* adults come the newest generation games (Example: Red and Blue aged ten years between the original first generation games and the events of Sun and Moon. Assuming they were ten in the original games, they would be Twenty in Sun and Moon.)

So I’m genuinely unsure where I stand. It just rubs me the wrong way when people brazenly ship children with adults or age up children to engage in nsfw. you do you i guess but im going to be highly wary of aged up muses, especially ones with no canonical timeline to bring them from the assumed canon age range of 10-14 up past 18 or those that focus heavily on nsfw or sexual aspects of a character whose design isn’t even altered form their canon appearance as a child.]

me too like not to be Like That but an ORAS style remake of sinnoh is wayyyy more exciting for me than the new game because just fundamentally a lot of the mechanics dont appeal to me very much? especially if they plan on using main series games to promote pokemon go. platinum was my go-to game as a kid tho and i love a lot of the characters + pokemon there so im biased lmao

YEAH IM really iffy on the whole constantly linking back to pkmn go like it’s not popular anymore where i live or even available in china so I cant see the appeal. But I have to say let’s go was a cute remake of pokemon RGB w a link to pkmn go just bc it was simple & nice.

I just think the pokemon company is trying too hard to constantly come up with new and exciting concepts/pokemon when there are already so many amazing ideas that didnt reach their full potential on older consoles (distortion world, the underground, the extra legendary pkmn). we are driven by nostalgia but there IS a lot to explore in older games and making new generations isnt always the right answer...

Reaching 900-1000 pokemon is kind of thrilling but really. not worth it imo & galar kind of proves that... sorry to do this but wooloo’s design is proof... feels cheap it’s literally just a sheep w no twist in its design or typing unlike mareep or pidgey. Im holding out for evolutions but im just gonna say. the bar is Really low
