NASA’s DART impact permanently changed the shape and orbit of asteroid moon
When NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft collided with an asteroid moon called Dimorphos in 2022, the moon was significantly deformed—creating a large crater and reshaping it so dramatically that the moon derailed from its original evolutionary progression—according to a new study. The study’s researchers believe that Dimorphos may start to “tumble” chaotically in its attempts to move back into gravitational equilibrium with its parent asteroid named Didymos.
“For the most part, our original pre-impact predictions about how DART would change the way Didymos and its moon move in space were correct,” said Derek Richardson, a professor of astronomy at the University of Maryland and a DART investigation working group lead. “But there are some unexpected findings that help provide a better picture of how asteroids and other small bodies form and evolve over time.”
The paper published in Planetary Science Journal on August 23, 2024 by a team led by Richardson detailed notable post-impact observations and described possible implications for future asteroid research.
One of the biggest surprises was how much the impact with DART changed the shape of Dimorphos. According to Richardson, the asteroid moon was originally oblate (shaped like a hamburger) but became more prolate (stretched out like a football) after the DART spacecraft collided with it.
“We were expecting Dimorphos to be prolate pre-impact simply because that’s generally how we believed the central body of a moon would gradually accumulate material that’s been shed off a primary body like Didymos. It would naturally tend to form an elongated body that would always point its long axis toward the main body,” Richardson explained. “But this result contradicts that idea and indicates that something more complex is at work here. Furthermore, the impact-induced change in Dimorphos’ shape likely changed how it interacts with Didymos.”
Richardson noted that although DART only hit the moon, the moon and the main body are connected through gravity. The debris scattered by the spacecraft on impact also played a role in the disturbed equilibrium between the moon and its asteroid, shortening Dimorphos’ orbit around Didymos. Interestingly, Didymos’ shape remained the same—a finding that indicates that the larger asteroid’s body is firm and rigid enough to maintain its form even after losing mass to create its moon.
According to Richardson, Dimorphos’ changes have important implications for future exploration efforts, including the European Space Agency’s follow-up mission to the Didymos system slated for October 2024.
“Originally, Dimorphos was probably in a very relaxed state and had one side pointing toward the main body, Didymos, just like how Earth’s moon always has one face pointing toward our planet,” Richardson explained. “Now, it’s knocked out of alignment, which means it may wobble back and forth in its orientation. Dimorphos might also be ‘tumbling,’ meaning that we may have caused it to rotate chaotically and unpredictably.”
The team is now waiting to find out when the ejected debris will clear from the system, whether Dimorphos is still tumbling in space and when it will eventually regain its previous stability.
“One of our biggest questions now is if Dimorphos is stable enough for spacecraft to land and install more research equipment on it,” he said. “It could take a hundred years to see noticeable changes in the system, but it’s only been a few years since the impact. Learning about how long it takes Dimorphos to regain its stability tells us important things about its internal structure, which in turn informs future attempts to deflect hazardous asteroids.”
Richardson and his team hope that Hera will provide more information about DART’s impact. By late 2026, Hera will arrive at the binary asteroid system containing Dimorphos and Didymos to assess the internal properties of both asteroids for the first time, providing a more detailed analysis of the DART mission and its implications for the future.
“DART gave us insight into complicated gravitational physics that you can’t do in a lab, and all of this research helps us calibrate our efforts to defend Earth in the event of an actual threat,” Richardson said. “There’s a nonzero chance that an asteroid or comet will approach and endanger the planet. Now, we have an additional line of defense against these kinds of external threats.”

With Aki’s hand in his, everything felt right. Like the stars were glistening down on them, the planets aligned. He was certain the cosmos had a hand in this, red strings of fate pulling them closer. He always believed that he chose his own fate, but he was certain that they were meant to be beyond that. The universe would have tugged him towards her anyway. A girl of moonlight, a divine beauty. He felt drawn to her, pulled in by her orbit and unable (or rather, unwilling) to escape. Her eyes twinkled like starlight, hair red like the roses she tended to, cheeks pink like her favourite colour. And when she smiled, he felt his heart melt. He was captivated, under a bewitching spell, and he never would allow it to break. Her laugh dripped with honey, and suddenly Yusei could understand why the bear in that old storybook would risk it all for a droplet. And when she whispered those fateful words, melodious like the greatest song ever created, a simple ‘I love you’, he felt the world stop around him. Mars is this Summer's Astro-MVP—And Politics Prove It
Every astrological season crowns an MVP, a planet that’s playing the game like it’s got something to prove. In 2022, it was Jupiter, the celestial superstar aligning with the outer planets like a champ. Last year, Venus took the throne with its intense summer retrograde drama through Leo. But now, Mars has stormed the field, ready to claim its title as the red-hot MVP of 2024. Strap in, because Mars is here to bring the heat and the headlines. In fact, it already has. Subscribe
Indeed, Mars seems intent on making us forget last year’s planetary drama, bringing the heat in more ways than one. Known for its action, aggression, incendiary nature, and headstrong drive, Mars is making some game-changing moves this Summer and Fall, set to jolt both our personal lives and the political landscape. But it’s not just the explosive Mars-Uranus conjunction, the upcoming conjunction to Jupiter, or Mars Retrograde in Leo that make Mars so noteworthy in 2024. There are other cosmic play-by-plays and coinciding ripple effects on politics and the Presidential candidates that make Mars this year’s astro-MVP. For better or for worse.
Looking Behind: Mars in Aquarius, Mars in Pisces, and Mars in Aries
Since the attempted assassination of D. Trump, the media has been in a tizzy, stressing our collective need to “cool down” the rhetoric around American democracy and the U.S. election. What they aren’t saying (because they likely aren’t aware of it) is that the rhetoric has gotten increasingly incendiary because of Mars. The planet of war has stoked the flames of our collective anger and aggression since the beginning of 2024. It doesn’t help that the North Node—a point where eclipses happen—is also in Mars-ruled Aries, essentially increasing our hunger for flaming-hot temper tantrums and violence.
To quote my own Mars in Aquarius article: “Mars is an enlivening planet that brings lots of action and momentum to the area of life ruled by the sign through which it transits. It can also bring swells of egotism, competitiveness, aggression, and/or conflict to that same area.” This is especially true when there’s a conjunction from Mars to one of the outer planets. Way back in February, we had our first Mars conjunction of 2024. Mars meets up with Pluto in Aquarius, emboldening folks to transform, rally behind, change and/or challenge the system. It does this, and then some, meanwhile activating Trump’s 7th & 8th Houses, while also sneaking through Biden’s 2nd & 3rd houses.
The Mars-Pluto conjunction on Feb. 13 is where the first seed of Mars’ MVP reign is planted. That day brings a Nor’easter, another headline about gun violence, a potential TikTok ban, and a major plea from Trump to the Supreme Court. The former president asks the SCOTUS to validate his claim of presidential immunity. Fast forward five months (on July 2, to be exact), as Mars inches closer to its conjunction with Uranus, and the SCOTUS does just that, dropping a bombshell law stating the President of the United States does, in fact, have some immunity. The collective? 50% outraged, 50% emboldened. 100% Mars in their reactions. Subscribe
Following that initial conjunction to Pluto, Mars squares off with rabble-rouser Uranus in Taurus on March 9. A tumult of Trump, Biden, and Gaza news follows. First, the U.S. government avoids (another) shutdown. Then, news of Trump’s defamation case with E. Jean Carrol recirculates, as Trump posts a massive $91.6 million bond. Lastly, Biden delivers a raucous State of the Union address, loudly challenging the then-quiet questions over his age and mental fitness for the oval office.
It’s fiery, feisty, and full-blown Mars. And just like the Mars-Pluto conjunction, there are two camps of reaction: championing cheers and vehement recriminations. In both cases, both camps exemplify Mars’ energy yet again. This much-hated planet in astrology is at-once a symbol of war and aggression as it is one of courage and valor. Who feels what side of Mars depends on who you talk to—and their political affiliation.
Early April brings us a Mars-ruled eclipse season and Mercury Retrograde, as well as s few other tense transits: the red planet conjoins both Saturn and Neptune before leaving Pisces and entering its home sign of Aries. While in Aries, Mars meets up with the North Node and Chiron. Emotions escalate around Gaza as Biden stiffens his stance for a cease-fire. Indignation and resentment builds for / against Trump, mostly because of abortion bans, but also because of the indictments and numerous pending court cases. Then, Mars enters Taurus.
2024 Mars in Taurus & the Mars-Uranus Conjunction
Mars in Taurus is, shall we say, a bit of a bull in a china shop. On June 9, Mars swaggers into Taurus, only to square off with Pluto two days later. For Biden, this means Mars is crashing into his 6th House. Thanks to a dismal debate performance, people are still raising questions about his age and fitness for presidency. Makes sense, since Mars and Uranus are also moving move to oppose Biden’s Sun, Mercury, and Venus. (Mars oppositions literally bring about dissent and adversaries.) But for Trump, Mars in Taurus storms into his 10th House of public life, heading straight for his Midheaven—the most public point of all.

People see me now, and they just assume, 'oh, she had it easy,'" she says, but Rose Ferreira has had it anything but easy. Ferreira left Hunter and began taking remote courses at Arizona State University (ASU) while recovering, and would eventually earn her Bachelor's degree in astronomy and planetary sciences. Her coursework at ASU led to her first fellowships at NASA, two subsequent internships at the space agency, and, ultimately, her full-time employment. She has also since earned a Master's degree in space systems engineering from Johns Hopkins University, in Maryland. While in recovery, faced with decreased mobility and limited resources, a friend suggested Ferreira turn to social media for advice about her situation. Her Twitter posts about her circumstances turned into long threads of explanation, as descriptions of her struggles began to grow into conversations online. She quickly gained a following, and found a community. "I opened an account as a joke. I started talking about my life a little bit. To me, those struggles were normal. Getting chased by rapists on the street, sleeping under a bridge — that stuff was normal to me," Ferreira said. Her openness online led to speaking engagements at various events, which quickly led to her involvement in outreach and activism for STEM education in disenfranchised communities. She focused on helping schools find ways to make science more interesting and accessible, and providing resources for children coming from schools without science programs. Ferreira says she is motivated to do this work because of her non-traditional path to becoming a scientist: "I want people to know, 'oh, maybe if she can do it, I can do it.'" When Ferreira was an intern at Goddard, she worked on the team that helped release the first deep field image from the James Webb Space Telescope, and had the chance to record a Spanish voice-over for one of NASA’s This Week at NASA videos. She was mentored by Thomas Zurbuchen, former associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, and had the opportunity to shadow him at NASA headquarters. It was 2022, the year NASA would publish their feature about Ferreira. That same year, she was also honored as a Brooke Owens Fellow for her STEM outreach. Ferreira was hired full-time at the space agency as an analyst in the beginning of 2024. "They had a big focus on opening opportunities for people, for women, who normally wouldn't get the chance," Ferreira said of the fellowship. "For me, that meant opening doors into aerospace." Ferreira became so successful in her STEM activism that she was honored at the White House in 2024 as a Young Hispanic Leader in the Space Industry. Just a few months after receiving that honor, Trump was elected President.

Rising odds asteroid that briefly threatened Earth will hit moon

Scientists are now hoping that the asteroid will smash into the Moon.
A huge asteroid that was briefly feared to strike Earth now has a nearly 4% chance of smashing into the moon, according to new data from the James Webb Space Telescope.
The asteroid, thought to be capable of leveling a city, set a new record in February for having the highest chance—3.1%—of hitting our home planet than scientists have ever measured.
Earth's planetary defense community leapt into action and further observations quickly ruled out that the asteroid—called 2024 YR4—will strike Earth on December 22, 2032.
But the odds that it will instead crash into Earth's satellite have been steadily rising.
After the Webb telescope turned its powerful gaze towards the asteroid last month, the chance of a moon shot is now at 3.8%, NASA said.
"There is still a 96.2% chance that the asteroid will miss the moon," NASA said in a statement on Thursday.
Richard Moissl, head of the European Space Agency's planetary defense office, told AFP that this aligned with their internal estimates of around 4%.
The new Webb data also shed light on the size of the space rock, which was previously estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters (131 to 295 feet).
It is now believed to be 53 to 67 meters, roughly the height of a 15-story building.
This is significant because it is bigger than the 50-meter threshold for activating planetary defense plans.
If the asteroid still had a more than 1% chance of hitting Earth, "the development of one or more deflection missions would already be starting now", Moissl said.
There are a range of ideas for how Earth could fend off an oncoming asteroid, including nuclear weapons and lasers.
But only one has been tested on an actual asteroid. In 2022, NASA's DART mission successfully altered a harmless asteroid's trajectory by smashing a spacecraft into it. 'Perfect opportunity'
While no one wanted to need to test Earth's defenses on the potentially hugely destructive asteroid 2024 YR4, many scientists are hoping it will strike the moon.
"The possibility of getting a chance for an observation of a sizable moon impact is indeed an interesting scenario from a scientific point of view," Moissl said.
It could offer up a range of information that would be "valuable for planetary defense purposes," he added.
Mark Burchell, a space scientist at the UK's University of Kent, told New Scientist that a moon hit would be "a great experiment and a perfect opportunity".
And on Earth, "telescopes would certainly see it, I would say, and binoculars might see it," he added.
The asteroid is the smallest object ever targeted by the Webb telescope.
Webb's measurements of the space rock's thermal data indicate that it "does not share properties observed in larger asteroids", the European Space Agency said in a statement.
"This is likely a combination of its fast spin and lack of fine-grained sand on its surface," it said, adding that this was more common in fist-sized asteroids.
More information will come when Webb again observes the asteroid again next month

RFA radio transmissions to China, Tibet halted
Relay stations owned or leased by US government no longer carrying Radio Free Asia broadcasts

Radio Free Asia announced this week that its radio broadcasts have been drastically cut as transmissions were halted from relay stations owned or leased by the U.S. government.
RFA informed listeners on Thursday that shortwave radio broadcasts for its Mandarin, Tibetan and Lao language services have stopped entirely. The broadcaster, which is funded by the U.S. Congress, said a heavily reduced schedule remains in place for RFA Burmese, Khmer, Korean and Uyghur language services.
The U.S. Agency for Global Media, or USAGM, which oversees RFA, abruptly terminated its federal grant on March 15. RFA has since been forced to furlough most of its staff, and filed a lawsuit last week, seeking to restore the funding on the grounds that the termination violated federal laws.
The Trump administration has moved to slash news organizations funded by the U.S. Congress, including Voice of America and those funded through federal grants like RFA and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, as part of its drive to reduce government spending.
With its reducing staffing, RFA is still providing limited news updates on its website and social media in all nine languages it serves. The broadcaster was established in 1996, and sends news to countries and regions across Asia that have little or no press freedom, such as North Korea, China, Myanmar and Vietnam.
Monitoring of radio frequencies previously used by RFA indicates that transmissions from shortwave and mediumwave relay stations owned or leased by USAGM have halted in the past week, meaning the hours of radio broadcasts have been slashed from 63 hours in March to just seven hours now.
That is based on review of an online Remote Monitoring System that is maintained by USAGM that provides short audio samples of radio frequencies in regions served by the broadcasters it oversees.
In late 2023, RFA had 126 hours of transmissions per day, before an earlier slew of shortwave cuts.
The few remaining broadcast hours are based on transmissions from relay stations not owned or leased by the U.S. government.
'Lost a lifeline to the truth'
Audience research and anecdotal reporting by RFA suggests that over the past decade or more, use of shortwave and mediumwave radio has reduced but it remains an important option in regions where internet access is poor or subject to official censorship and scrutiny.
"For millions living in North Korea and China's Tibetan and Uyghur regions, RFA's exclusive news and content can only be accessed through shortwave transmissions. Now those populations are being cut off, as are people in Myanmar who are reeling in the wake of a devastating earthquake when radio is a crucial medium," said Rohit Mahajan, RFA's chief communications officer.
"They have lost a lifeline to the truth precisely at a moment when it's needed most," Mahajan said.
RFA Burmese has received growing requests since the March 28 earthquake in central Myanmar for more radio broadcasts because of disruptions to the internet since the 7.7 magnitude temblor that killed more than 3,000 people.
Kyaw Kyaw Aung, director of RFA Burmese, said that in the aftermath of the earthquake, the service had received requests for more shortwave broadcasts in Rakhine state, a conflict-hit area of western Myanmar which largely escaped the quake but has poor internet access.
"Only a few people with access to the military-run, state-owned MRTV shortwave radio knew about the disaster after it happened, and the reporting was heavily censored," said Kyaw Kyaw Aung, who has been anchoring a 15-minute RFA daily news broadcast since the earthquake. "Our followers were strongly requesting RFA radio."

Musica Universalis: The Music Theory Behind the Milky Way
An article by Jezreel Dequina acknowledges the beauty of our solar system and the frequencies it contributes to a harmonic orbit.

The concept of the universe as a musical composition has made me think for a while. The frequencies that each planet holds effectively resonate outwards, creating an oscillating system of predictable patterned movements. Scholars and philosophers have studied astronomy for centuries for various purposes. (Books, n.d.) The concept of a musical planetary composition, called the “Music of the Spheres” (Musica Universalis), suggests that celestial bodies move according to mathematical equations, which correspond to musical notes, creating a form of harmony that, while inaudible, reflects a deeper order to the physics of our universe. (Cousto, n.d.) Pythagoras, the ancient Greek philosopher, was credited with first proposing that the movements of celestial bodies are governed by harmonious numerical ratios, a reflection of what you’d find in musical scales. The Swiss mathematician and musicologist Hans Cousto expanded upon these concepts in 1978 by introducing the “Cosmic Octave.” Cousto demonstrated that natural phenomena, such as planetary orbits, could be translated into audible sounds through the process of frequency doubling or halving, known as octavation. By applying this core principle […] Cousto calculated that Earth’s rotation corresponds to a tone of 194.18 Hz, which aligns with the note G. (Bank & Scafetta, 2022)

For example, the ratio between certain planetary distances mirrors the interval of a major second in music, which has a frequency ratio of 9:8. (Cousto, n.d.)
The philosophical meaning behind these findings resonate with the ancient concept of Musica Universalis. Johannes Kepler, in his work “Harmonices Mundi” (1619), proposed that the planets produce a form of music through their orbital motions, a harmony that, while not audible, reflects a divine order. Kepler’s ideas formulates the separation between the mystical and the scientific, suggesting that the cosmos operates according to principles akin to musical harmony. (Bank & Scafetta, 2022b)
In conclusion, the interplay between celestial mechanics and musical theory offers a profound perspective on the structure of our universe. One that is harmonically beautiful. The harmonic relationships observed in planetary orbits and distances not only provide insights into the dynamics of celestial bodies but also provoke a sense of wonder and awe at the inherent order of true physics and beauty of the cosmos. This article is a reminder for me that the complexities of the universe is vast, and many of our answers lie in the patterns we can detect. The universe will always be the greatest song ever played.

The Boston Consulting Group’s Perspective on Future Skills
In the view of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), an organisation committed to driving complex change for transformation, the skills required for the future of work are framed within four critical boundaries. Their 2024 article, The Next 50 Years of Work, presents these boundaries as a foundation for preparing learners for an AI-driven world:
Planetary Boundary: The environmental health sustaining humanity must be respected.
Technological Boundary: The ethical and safe use of rapidly evolving technology requires careful navigation.
Social Foundation: Vital resources and conditions must meet humanity’s basic needs.
Sociocognitive Boundary: Collective mental health and well-informed decision-making are critical for societal wellbeing.
BCG emphasises a crucial skill set for the future that includes existential capabilities, such as adaptability and mindfulness, bionic skills which involve mastering technologies like AI and virtual reality, creativity, encompassing curiosity and storytelling, and human-to-human skills like communication and empathy.
These skills point to the need for higher education to cultivate learners who can merge human intuition with technological capabilities, fostering an attitude of proactive readiness in an AI-driven world.
AI in Education: The Imperative for Higher Learning Institutions
Higher education has a pivotal role in adapting to the AI era, demanding shifts in assessment design, curriculum integration, and ethical AI use. Educational regulators like the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) have provided guiding principles to navigate these shifts. In the Assessment Reform for the Age of Artificial Intelligence report, TEQSA emphasises three core principles: integrity, transparency, and preparedness for the future. Institutions must ensure AI is used ethically, that assessments remain meaningful, and that students are equipped with future-ready skills.
As Lauren Sayer, Director of Curriculum at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, puts it:

AI's presence in education should not weaken academic integrity but enhance it through thoughtful policies and practices.

According to a new study, global methane emissions are “rising rapidly” — at the fastest pace in decades — with immediate action needed to help curtail a dangerous intensification of the climate crisis.
The study outlines three “imperatives” for reducing methane emissions, as well as a new tool to assist nations with optimizing cost-effective methods to reduce their methane emissions, an explainer from Frontiers said.
The actions called for by the study’s authors include reversing methane emissions growth, aligning carbon dioxide and methane mitigation and optimizing policies and technologies for the abatement of methane at the global, national and sector levels.
A potent greenhouse gas, methane is responsible for roughly half of global heating since preindustrial times. Methane emissions have gone up quickly since 2006, with record emissions in 2021 and 2022.
The study, “The methane imperative,” was published in the journal Frontiers.
The rise of methane emissions has been much more rapid than models predicted and, if it is not addressed, jeopardizes the world’s ability to meet its climate goals. On the other hand, methane reduction is a cost-effective strategy to rapidly reduce planetary warming.
Methane affects human health and agriculture by contributing to the development of ground-level ozone. It causes cardiovascular disease and respiratory illness, as well as premature deaths in adults and children under five, particularly in low- and middle-income nations. Ozone also harms plants, reducing crop yields.
This decade, methane emissions worldwide have typically increased by roughly 30 million tons annually over the previous decade. There is no one clear explanation for the trend, but scientists have identified some contributing factors.
Methane is released during the processing of gas, oil and coal, and there has been a jump in fracking leading to a boom in gas projects this century. Livestock also emit methane — mostly from cow burps — and there has been an increase in animal agriculture, along with expanded rice production.
Increasing global temperatures are also leading to the more rapid decomposition of wetlands organic matter, which also releases methane.

Known for his steady leadership, consensus building, and enthusiasm for engaging the public in science, Stone left a deep impact on the space community.
Edward C. Stone, former director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, and longtime project scientist of the agency’s Voyager mission, died on June 9, 2024. He was 88. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Stone. They are survived by their two daughters, Susan and Janet Stone, and two grandsons.
Stone also served as the David Morrisroe professor of physics and vice provost for special projects at Caltech in Pasadena, California, which last year established a new faculty position, the Edward C. Stone Professorship.
“Ed Stone was a trailblazer who dared mighty things in space. He was a dear friend to all who knew him, and a cherished mentor to me personally,” said Nicola Fox, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Ed took humanity on a planetary tour of our solar system and beyond, sending NASA where no spacecraft had gone before. His legacy has left a tremendous and profound impact on NASA, the scientific community, and the world. My condolences to his family and everyone who loved him. Thank you, Ed, for everything.”

Stone served on nine NASA missions as either principal investigator or a science instrument lead, and on five others as a co-investigator (a key science instrument team member). These roles primarily involved studying energetic ions from the Sun and cosmic rays from the galaxy. He was one of the few scientists involved with both the mission that has come closest to the Sun (NASA’s Parker Solar Probe) and the one that has traveled farthest from it (Voyager).
“Ed will be remembered as an energetic leader and scientist who expanded our knowledge about the universe — from the Sun to the planets to distant stars — and sparked our collective imaginations about the mysteries and wonders of deep space,” said Laurie Leshin, JPL director and Caltech vice president. “Ed’s discoveries have fueled exploration of previously unseen corners of our solar system and will inspire future generations to reach new frontiers. He will be greatly missed and always remembered by the NASA, JPL, and Caltech communities and beyond.”
From 1972 until his retirement in 2022, Stone served as the project scientist from NASA’s longest-running mission, Voyager. The two Voyager probes took advantage of a celestial alignment that occurs just once every 176 years to visit Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. During their journeys, the spacecraft revealed the first active volcanoes beyond Earth on Jupiter’s moon Io, and an atmosphere rich with organic molecules on Saturn’s moon Titan. Voyager 2 remains the only spacecraft to fly by Uranus and Neptune, revealing Uranus’ unusual tipped magnetic poles, and the icy geysers erupting from Neptune’s moon Triton.
“Becoming Voyager project scientist was the best decision I made in my life,” Stone said in 2018. “It opened a wonderful door of exploration.”
During Stone’s tenure as JPL’s director from 1991 to 2001, the federally funded research and development facility was responsible for more than two dozen missions and science instruments. Among them was NASA’s Pathfinder mission, which landed on Mars in 1996 with the first Red Planet rover, Sojourner. The next year saw the launch of the NASA-ESA (European Space Agency) Cassini/Huygens mission.
JPL also developed six missions for planetary exploration, astrophysics, Earth sciences, and heliophysics under Stone’s leadership.
Journey to Space
The eldest of two sons, Stone was born in Knoxville, Iowa, during the Great Depression and grew up in the nearby commercial center of Burlington. After high school, he studied physics at Burlington Junior College and went on to the University of Chicago for graduate school. Shortly after he was accepted there, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, and the Space Age began. Stone joined a team building instruments to launch into space.
“Space was a brand-new field waiting for discovery,” Stone recalled in 2018.
In 1964, he joined Caltech as a postdoctoral fellow, running the Space Radiation Lab together with Robbie Vogt, who had been a colleague at Chicago. They worked on a number of NASA satellite missions, studying galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles.
Depending on the mission, Stone served as a co-investigator or principal investigator for the missions’ instrument teams, and Vogt could see his leadership potential. “Ed didn’t let emotions get in the way of doing the best possible job,” he said. “His personality is to solve a problem when it arises.” In 1972, Vogt recommended Stone to JPL leadership to be Voyager project scientist.
Among Stone’s many awards is the National Medal of Science from President George H.W. Bush. In 2019, he was presented with the Shaw Prize in Astronomy, with an award of $1.2 million, for his leadership in the Voyager project. Stone was also proud to have a middle school named after him in Burlington, Iowa, as an inspiration to young learners.
