an important universal Commander Shepard trait to me is that Shepard is not funny, to the point where it loops back around to being kind of funny how unfunny they are. like they don't have to be serious all the time, and it's better if they aren't, but in my mind, what defines Commander Shepard, as a character and not just the blank slate Player Character, is that they are this cool action space hero who is also stiff and awkward and bad at dancing. they can and should do funny things, but if they try to tell a joke or banter, it's just gotta be a little embarrassing for everyone involved or it's going to break my suspension of disbelief.

the Warden, on the other hand, is very funny because no matter what origin you play as, that teenager* is Going Through It in a way you just know just lends itself to a very dry and witty sense of humor. like if they weren't already funny before getting conscripted into a shadowy death cult, they definitely are now.

i've been following you since, god, since i think you were only six or so episodes into season 1??? i've been rather shy about talking to you directly but i really wanted you to know just how enamored i am both with your quest (writing analysis posts for every episode) and with your product. i'm so impressed with the way you've built up such a strong emotional narrative that's cohesive and compelling, to the point that even if the writers/kripke himself weren't conscious of every element they injected into the story, i can't possibly see it any other way anymore. like what was the intended reading of this show if not freaky psychosexual incest brothers, seriously. you make strong arguments for your reading and interpretations, and i love seeing you put together the evidence and draw connections across and within episodes.

anyway all this to say, whenever i try to get a friend of mine to watch this wretched show i always send your posts to them as additional reading after every episode they watch haha. it's a genuinely good breakdown of each episode, and on top of that the wincest narrative you've woven via the text drives me insane, and i want my friends to understand that insanity too :)

what do you think about daemon secretly wanting viserys like matt said? don't get me wrong i was under the impression that the only reason why daemon didn't marry viserys was because viserys wasn't a girl. daemon made it clear he wanted to be his brother's heir and his brother's hand. imo he was hurt when he said i am your heir and that he would have protected him from otto. i just thought if only viserys was a girl. really.

we know vizzy sees rhaenyra as extension of aemma and aegon, helaena, aemond and daeron as extension of alicent and he projects his feelings towards aemma and alicent onto his children. with daemon imo it's the same with the way he sees rhaenyra. yes, daemon wanted power, but what he wanted the most was to be close to his brother. i guess it happens when family is inbred. alysanne and old king were siblings, alyssa and baelon too, if vizzy was a girl daemon would have married her.

what do you think of vizzy x daemon?

saying daemon wants rhaenyra because he wants viserys is a bit reductive imo. to me daemon is a deeply dependent character due to how tightly he's woven in the incest family, he gets everything from them, his identity, role, gender, everything and it's no wonder that he's learned that everything he could want comes from the targs. it's not that viserys could be a girl, viserys always has to be the patriarch, the Man, for the themes of the story to work (he is the one fucking everyone up by his choices), it's that daemon's role in the family is to be the visenya, viserys' opposite, and it's said right off the bat in the first episode: he's visenya, protector, sister, scorned wife. viserys doesn't let him be anything else than this narrow categories. when daemon is permanently expelled from viserys' esteem (right around ep 4 when daemon touches another one of viserys' toys) it's when he truly learns he could get what he wants from rhaenyra without getting kicked when he asks. circling back to the beginning, while i do think at the beginning that daemon likes and loves rhaenyra because she's viserys' daughter and that it might have played a role in daemon seeking her out, i don't think it's that prevalent after eps 4-5 when she shows she's her own person with her own desires. these are explicitly two people getting under the shadow of viserys and meeting him on their own terms in ep 8.

daemon wants to be close to viserys, yeah. that's the whole point of his character and why they fight at the end of ep 1. i honestly don't think he's that keen on absolute power tbh, not the way other characters are like otto, because he gets agency and control from his violence (direct rather than subtle of soft power), but if having powerful offices like master of law or hand of the king is what gets him near his brother's love then he's absolutely taking them (and fucking it up probably). it's very telling he had his uncle aemon and baelon, his father, as role models for the perfect brotherhood, that viserys is NOT following the protocol, which is fair he gets mad at. it's not that they are inbred at all, or at least not completely, bc even in marriages when the spouses are not related like viserys and alicent, the children like aegon and aemond still have a degree of unhealthy closeness. it's institutional rather than individual.

in any case, while i think the relationship between viserys and daemon is interesting, i'm not too keen on it. i always like to try to see daemon as an individual rather than as part of a relationship bec that's what it usually happens, as i said, i find it reductive in most cases when people talk about their dynamic. like, yeah, if daemon were a girl she would've absolutely married the shit out of viserys but that's not everything there is to their relationship. it's not only daemon who harbors those feelings but viserys too who doesn't like to share his toys and often thinks of the people around him as being there for his amusement. it's a complicated relationship.

It really annoys me that there's no way to talk Astarion out of the ritual other than bargaining with the lives of the spawn to be honest. Makes it so that trying to persuade him as a character that is far from good and selfless, but cares about him a lot feels ooc as hell. Sure you can pick the "Cazador said this will kill you, don't risk it" option but it leads you back to either "But the spawn :(" or "Okay, let's do this". The dialogue tree there leaves no ambiguity to the morality of your character.

I wish there was a way to get the insight check after you voice the fear for his life and get a persuasion one if you succeed. Kind of a "I was ready to see them all burn for you, but I can see that you're not sure and the ritual claiming your life is not worth the risk. We'll find another way. There's still the crown, remember?" thing. They leaned too heavily into this ending being the "vampire fetish" one, assumed that if the player character doesn't care about a bunch of random spawn, they would not care about Astarion's emotional wellbeing and that's just not how people work to me. The way you have to be the one to make the choice what to do with the spawn if you do stop the ritual annoys the fuck out of me too. It's not my choice to make, my Durge does not give a fuck what happens to them once Cazador is gone and the party is safe. He would rather leave that choice to Astarion. He wants to kill them anyway? Great! Blood, guts and suffering! Lovely! He wants to spare them? Whatever love, if that's what you want. Let's just get the fuck out of here.

It would be nice to have that option, especially considering this is supposed to be all about Astarion reclaiming his autonomy.

I just don't like it when to not get fucked over by a game I have to sacrifice the roleplaying aspect of it idk. Even if my character genuinely wants Astarion to ascend no matter the cost it will have for others because he's convinced them that's what he needs to finally gain his freedom and they're the kind of "anything for you kitten" person, they still should be able to notice that Something Is Not Right without it going against their personality and feeling forced.
