Etta's Guide to Writeblr (March 2023)

So you fled here from Twitter/TikTok... Where to start?

Welcome to Writeblr! Pull up a chair, open those documents, and pour yourself a cup of your favorite tea, coffee, or cocoa. The first thing you'll want to do is start following other writers. Check out this post for recommendations! Search through the notes to find hundreds more. Since I made that post, a bunch of people mentioned they're lurking and still trying to figure out tumblr, so I thought I'd make this post to help people get settled.

How to set up your blog

Make your blog name something not resembling a pornbot - it can be whatever you want, anything fun goes, just not [name###]. If you include "writer" or "author" somewhere in the url it makes it easier to spot writeblrs at a glance but it's not a requirement

Change your profile to something that's not the default, Make sure you have a blog title, and add a little description in your blog header if you feel like it!

Make a pinned post introducing yourself (pls don't use your real name or any IDing information for privacy's sake, this isn't facebook), a short summary of your WIPs, and links if you have an author's website/newsletter/ao3/etc. You can check my pinned post for an example

Make intro posts for each WIP! You can spruce these up with graphics (canva and unsplash are both great free resources to make edits/moodboards), excerpts, lists of tropes, character intros, etc. Link to the WIP intro in your pinned post so it's easy to find! You can update these as often as needed

If you want to make character intros, go wild. If you can't draw, piccrew is a great option. Just start talking about your WIP!

Come up with a tagging system to keep your blog organized. I recommend individual wip tags or at least one for your original writing in general so it's easy to search for your work on your blog

Keep track of Taglists for your WIPs. Whenever you post a new thing about your story, tag the people who asked to be notified to make sure they see it! Only tag people who ask to join the taglist, but it's a good way to keep track of interest. It's normal to have multiple taglists for each story+ one general writing taglist.

How to make writer friends

Reblog their work and add nice comments, either in the tags, comments, or the reblog itself People notice regulars in their notes and appreciate the attention. I promise it's not weird to compliment a total stranger

If that's too intimidating, community events are your friend!

Weekly Ask Games: These are weekly events that are loosely themed where writers send each other asks about their WIPs! The most common are Storyteller Saturday (about the writing process), Blorbsday (aka Blorbo Thursday about characters), and Worldbuilding Wednesday (about the setting of your story). If you answer these late, nobody really cares, but it's a fun way to receive prompts and learn more about other people's stories.

Ask Games/Memes: These are posts with lists of questions you can reblog from other people, sometimes themed or listed with emojis. It's common courtesy to send an ask from the list to the person you reblog it from, then people can send you questions as well, so you can talk about your stories! You can search for dozens of them

Tag games: There's a ton of different types of tag games, but basically someone @s you with a challenge/question, you reblog with your answer, and then @ a bunch of other people to continue the chain. Some common ones are Heads Up 7s Up (share the last 7 lines of your WIP), Last Line Tag (share the last line you wrote), and Find the Words (ctrl+f the given words in your doc and share the results, then give new words).

Formal events: These are community wide participation challenges organized by certain blogs! @writeblrsummerfest is every July?? August? I think? It's run by @abalonetea a few years strong, and there are daily prompts and ask games! @inklings-challenge is a month-long short story entry for Christian writeblrs. I think there was a valentines event in February. @moon-and-seraph is hosting a pitch week soon! Since these are more organized, it's very easy to find similar blogs and support!

Misc. Notes on using Tumblr

Follow the tags #writeblr and #writeblr community to find other writers, as well as other tags that interest you like #fantasy for example

If you want to bookmark a post to read later, you can like it and/or save it to your drafts

The queue/schedule function is very useful if you want to space out posts or have a backlog to keep your blog running when you get busy. This is good for the community because it gives older posts a chance to be rediscovered! You can change the posting frequency in the settings.

REBLOG YOUR OWN STUFF. People aren't always on at the same times and so it's the best way to account for people with different schedules and timezones. If you're worried about being annoying, you can tag those #self reblog or something similar and other people can filter the tag, but otherwise it's a welcomed and accepted practice.

If your excerpt is pretty long, put it under a cut. On desktop you can do this by selecting the squiggly button on the far right when you make a new paragraph, on mobile type :readmore: then hit enter.

It's polite to add descriptions to images and videos for visually or auditory impaired people. If you don't know how to write descriptions, here's a good resource

In your dashboard settings, it's best to shut off the options "Best Stuff First" and "Based on your Likes". These function as the website algorithm and suppresses the blogs you actually follow, which defeats the purpose of the site, letting the dash be in reverse chronological order. Also turn off Tumblr Live because it's malware as far as anyone's concerned.

Scroll down to the tag that says "Prevent Third-Party Sharing"

Turn that knob over so that Automattic can't steal your work for their language training model databases >_<

The other settings will just hide your blog from search engines so they're useful for hiding from nosy parents or other Tumblr users but if you're trying to build an author platform you can leave them off.

i dont know if there's even a ppop presence on tumblr but i do also want to promote ALAMAT, a 6-member idol boy group from the Philippines. Its members comprise of Taneo, Mo, Jao, Tomas, R-ji, and Alas. They debuted in 2021, and their creative direction centers on championing the Filipino identity and culture through their music.

personal opinion: the music video is great but i personally think they have better songs, music-wise. and i'm going to give you an example of that by introducing you to my ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALAMAT SONG!!!

ILY ILY, a transliteration of "Ili-Ili Tulog Anay", incorporates the melody and lyrics of the Ilonggo lullaby it derives its title from. The MV and lyrics both work together to portray the experience of being an OFW/having an OFW parent. OFWs, or overseas Filipino workers, refer to Filipinos who go abroad in search of jobs that have better pay, so that they can remit money back to their families in the Philippines.

personal opinion: this is their best song THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG EVER OF ALL TIME and lyca gairanod is such a perfect singer for this. her ethereal crooning really gave me chills the first time i heard it UGH

DAYANG, the term for the wife of a Datu, is one of their most earworming songs ever. It's a gorgeous love song and what I would recommend to newbies if they want to get into alamat <3

personal opinion: The MV is kinda ass because it's just a super long extended ad for DITO PH (in terms of story and also bc they really missed out on doing a vid that drew more on culture esp bc dayang is a historical noble title and they used tausug words and designs for the graphics an the dance itself already incorporated pangasik dance which is also from the tausug people LIKEEE?? they've always promoted other cultures of the philippines i know they can do it but because of CAPITALISM--). But the song bangs so severely, as a pop enjoyer this is peak pop for me.

DAGUNDONG, a song basically recounting the colonial history of the Philippines from Spain to America, is just so fucking good you should watch/listen to it rn. There's EN subs don't worry you won't miss out on the context. This is colonial rage it's so satisfying I still remember where I was when they dropped this.

personal opinion: this is their most pop-sounding song, which i think is slightly carried by the video i'm sorryyy. it's catchy though!! and i looove the part somewhere halfway where alas starts his verse, singing it in a more spoken-word way

Ever since I accidentally picked up and played DGS, I knew I needed to play PLVSPW. I decided to alternate playing ace attorney games with professor layton games until I finished the main trilogies for both and could finally play plvspw, and it was so worth the wait. I love this game so much it is everything I could have hoped and more, so so so much more. Highly recommend to honestly anyone!!!

Summary

This game is everything I hoped it would be. yes it's a Professor Layton crossover, but it also has the charm of DGS x Princess tutu x tunic. The ending was very layton-esque, along with all the reveals. I truly had such an amazing time playing this game. I was initially introduced to this because I heard that DGS was inspired by it, so it was my mission to play both aa and pl's original trilogies before playing. And I am so glad I did bc the wait was so worth it. You can absolutely see the influence this game and professor layton had on Shu Takumi. There's so much passion and creativity between plvspw an dgs that makes playing them all the more enjoyable. I loved how all the main characters interacted with each other, I especially loved how hershel and phoenix swapped assistants. The new characters were also so fun. Espella, Barnham, Darklaw, the story-teller, they were all so unique and enjoyable to interact with. The animation was stellar. This 3D style really works for both PL and AA and im so glad both series took inspiration from it. The music and art was phenomenal, this game honestly should win awards if it hasn't already done so. I also love how any character pulled into an aa game will have their gay moments: phoenix x hershel and espella x eve especially. I can't wait to make art or even write for this game, I will definitely add scenes from this to my ballet au ^^! What a phenomenal game, what a fun premise with the most convoluted layton-esque ending. It was so perfectly I highly recommend!!

war of the foxes - richard siken

my absolute favorite poetry collection, from my absolute favorite poet <3333 i’m assuming that you’re looking for novels rather than poetry but. i HAD to rec this one. because i love it soooooo dearly and it’s inspired my writing so much!!!! siken’s use of language is just …… sooooo tasty. so good. i’m completely obsessed with him. his other poetry collection is called crush and centers around tenderness/sex/violence (and the ways they blur together), but i’d say this collection is more about. art. making art. it’s also about love and war and. lots of things. but art is a big theme. paint on paint. etc. it made me severely ill in the best of ways <33 i really couldn’t recommend it enough!!!

eureka street - robert mcliam wilson

this book is . sooooo underrated 😔😔 i hate it so much. not the book i just hate that it isn’t widely renowned because it SHOULD BE. i read this for one of my high school english classes and it. changed my brain chemistry forever. it’s so good. wilson’s writing is so insanely gorgeous?? it reminds me so much of the writing in disco elysium (my fav video game + biggest writing source 🙏)…. honestly i think it’s worth reading for the writing alone. anyway!! this is a book about love. it starts with the quote ”all stories are love stories.” it’s also about the troubles, which is a conflict between catholics and protestants in ireland during the late 1900s. this book takes place at the end of a period of terror and bombings, but still manages to be about love first and foremost. the main characters are charming and silly and kind of insane in the head <33 this book is VERY funny btw… it had me laughing out loud a lot but also had me feeling so much. it’s so, so heartfelt. you can tell wilson loves belfast. and you can tell belfast loves its people. this book is so special to me and i don’t think i can explain its entire appeal with just words, so you’re just gonna have to trust me when i say it’s wonderful <33

the human flies - hans olav lahlum

do you like murder mysteries 👀👀….. i do. this is my favorite one. it’s very near and dear to my heart!!! the human flies is a classic whodunnit where a man has been killed in his apartment complex, and the other residents are all suspects. it’s about trauma. kind of. and it has a really good historial twist where it turns out that they’re all connected through ww2… but i think the greatest charm point of this book (aside from the mystery) is its characters!! they’re all really vibrant and charming. or not so charming. but they’re hard not to get attached to i think!!! this book also subverts the detective genre by making its detective really useless which i love <333 he ends up being contacted by a girl in a wheelchair who’s basically sherlock holmes and she does all the mystery solving. it’s great. if you’re into the murder mystery genre then i really recommend this one!!

beartown - fredrick backman

THIS BOOK . god. this is another one that i can’t really talk about coherently because it means so much to me. i think every single person on this planet should be strapped to a chair and forced to read it <333 this is a book about…. literally everything. if i had to pick just one thing it’d be community. but like… it’s about family. it’s about friendship. it’s about hockey. it’s about sexual violence and locker-room culture and their devastating consequences. it’s about cherry blossoms and the hope they carry. it’s about healing. it’s about a small town and the people who live in it. every single one of them are interesting. when it comes to the actual plot… i think it’s best to go in blind but i doooo feel obligated to tell you that the center of the book’s conflict is a rape. the first half of the book introduces beartown, its famous hockey team, its people and their stories. the second half deals with the consequences of this rape. backman wrote this book so, so thoughtfully. the topic is obviously sensitive but you don’t need to worry about the perpetrator not getting what’s coming to him, because he will. and ohhhhh BOY backman’s writing. his writing is so unbelievably pretty. that’s the best word for it. he’s literally carrying swedish literature on his bare shoulders. holy fuck. in conclusion; this is maybeeee my favorite book of all time? and you should read it :3 it’s very long but i promise it feels so fast once you get into it. it’s the kind of book that i think everyone can fall in love with!!!! it really did change my life i think.

the travelling cat chronicles - hiro arikawa

honestly, i think this is the book i’d recommend to you the most!! not because of quality (though definitely that too!!) but because i think it’s perfect for someone who’s just getting into reading. minus points for being kindaaa long but that’s all!! i think i should preface this by saying that this book made me cry LMAO. ugly cry. sob. i’ve never cried so hard reading a book before…. it wasn’t a bad cry though!! this book is sad but it’s also so charming and hopeful and sweet. it’s about a cat who travels around the country with his owner satoru(!!), not knowing where they’re going or why they’re going there. the kitty is the narrator and he’s sooo charming. satoru is too. their dynamic is so precious :(((( if you love cats then you’ll love this book, trust me!! anyway… to me this is a great pick for new readers because the writing is super pretty but also really. easy to chew? the story is also written in a very compelling way which should make it a pretty quick read despite its lenght!! it’s very much a roadtrip book :3 i love it a lot and even though it made me cry i consider it a bigggg comfort read (but i’m a jjk fan so take that with a grain of salt)

the stranger - albert camus

ok so!!! i did try not to add any classic books to this list because honestly i don’t think many of them are good introductions to reading. the educational system could learn from me . BUT…. this is one that i think you can get really hooked on even if you don’t study literature. this is a book about . existentialism. or just apathy (and overcoming it)… the protagonist doesn’t really want much in life. he just follows the herd. he’s basically like…. just some guy?? but also very much Not just some guy. because just some guys don’t answer their girlfriend’s proposal with ”if you want to.” or chainsmoke. or kill a guy because ”the sun was too hot.” yeah. he’s very charming (<- worrying taste in men), very weird and very interesting. most analyses on this book are just attempts to diagnose him. the central conflict of the book is the murder he commits, and the trial that follows, where the attention shifts from his actual murder to… the fact that he didn’t cry at his mother’s funeral. hm. this book is really fun. :3 and i love camus’ writing!!! like many books on this list it’s pretty but easy to chew, so i think you’ll enjoy it. read if you want to Think about life. or if you want to see meursault have his bisexual awakening in the middle of a murder trial.

jay gatsby they will never make me hate you…. remember what i just said about not wanting to add classics to this list? the great gatsby is another exception <333 honestly i just . really love this book!!! it’s such a short and tasty read!!!!! i’ve heard that american students really hate it because they were forced to read it and like . i sympathize but 🤨 c’mon. there are sooo many classics that are so much more hellish to read for school…. they don’t know how good they have it……. anyway. the writing is very pretty and the descriptions are soooo…. captivating. so many lines are stuck in my brain. (”they’re a rotten crowd. you’re worth the whole damn bunch put together” my BELOVED <333) people will tell you that this book is about the futility of the american dream and it IS but i also think you should make your own interpretation!!! because there are lots to make. personally i favour the queer one <33 because i’m…. me. gatsby is just . such a tragic character. but also so pathetic. and charming. he’s one of my og meowmeows. this book is worth reading if only for him. i need to dip him in olive oil.

kafka on the shore - haruki murakami

…. sigh . look 😔😔 do i like haruki murakami? no. do i like his writing? unfortunately yes. this book is fucking wild and kind of gross in . a plethora of ways (tw for umm cat beheadings? almost rape (in a dream)? fantasy incest kind of maybe…?? it’s not as bad as it sounds but like. it kinda is. idk.) but for some reason it’s still one of my favorites. i feel like murakami’s classic blend between fantasy and reality stays the same throughout his works and it’s just….. reallyyyyy tasty to me. i think that’s why i still think of this book so often. it really really moved me. and i mean…. let’s face it, his writing is very pretty. this is a book about growing up and it really doesn’t shy away from the discomforting topics that come with that. it’s also about talking cats and mommy issues. kafka has lots of them. i think he’s kind of annoying. the other characters are very charming though!! in this book you basically follow two different plot lines, and both are really captivating imo… buuuut the book is Very Long and very weird so i don’t know if i’d recommend it to someone who’s just getting into reading 😭 it really is very good though… if nothing else, read it for the Vibes. they’re very tasty.

waiting for godot - samuel beckett

this is a fun one <333 and a weird one. NOT a good rec for a new reader lmao but i do have to add it because i adore samuel beckett…. and this is my favorite play!!!!!! it’s usually associated with absurdism which i think says enough on its own. this is a play about…. waiting for godot. that’s all <3 the two main characters, didi and gogo, are basically stuck in a timeloop where they wait for godot to come. he doesn’t. they keep waiting. i adore this play for many reasons but some of them are: timeloops my beloved (1), didi & gogo are super funny and gay and their back-and-forth dialogue kinda turns into poetry sometimes (2), it’s SO much fun to analyze (3). godot can literally be whatever you want him to be. that’s so fun!!!! it’s a weird play but if you want to get into reading plays then… it’ll be here <33

giovanni’s room - james baldwin

aaaand finally!!!! this lovely gem <333 i’m actually not completely finished with it myself but i can tell you that it’s already one of my favorites!!!!! it’s about . shame. and tenderness. and morality. all that good stuff :3 i’ll try to keep this short but . basically…. it centers around a closeted gay/bisexual man who goes on vacation to paris while his girlfriend is vacationing in spain. in a certain bar, he meets a certain barman, whose name is giovanni. they really hit it off. sadly they’re doomed by the narrative. goshhhh this book is just. ough. first of all??? james baldwin is SO . fucking good. his prose is so gorgeous. soooo so gorgeous. worth reading just for that. but the dynamic between david and giovanni is …… so lovely??? and the glimpse you get into their heads is just so. beautiful. :((( this book is so SAD . but also not really. it’s bittersweet. david has to choose between a safe life and a happy life and he’s doomed to choose the safe life. that’s all there is to it.

It's not really known how you ended up with Artemis. The story most accepted by everyone is that she met you on one of her hunts. The goddess had found you alone, when you were just a baby, your parents had been killed by bears and you, for some reason, had been spared. But none of that mattered anymore, you were with her now and Artemis didn't intend to let you go anywhere.

Artemis is overprotective and suffocating when it comes to you. She wants to know absolutely everything, where you're going, with who you're going with and who's going to be there. You are not allowed to leave her side without the goddess having examined everyone involved. It doesn't matter to her if it's simply a day of play with other kids, your safety was more important and Artemis didn't play around when it came to that.

However, you were a shy child and therefore rarely left the goddess's side. Although Artemis wants you to have friends and have fun like any child, she prefers you stick to her side where it's safe.

Artemis absolutely adores you. Although she had never wanted to have children (and that desire still persists), she saw you as her child. If you are a girl, Artemis wants you to become one of her hunters, but if you are a boy she will allow you to accompany her on her hunts, as she considers you worthy to do so.

The goddess doesn't want you to grow up. Artemis doesn't want you to become a teenager who will eventually abandon you in favor of friends and love interests. She can't let that happen. So Artemis made you immortal when you were just a child. She is more than aware that this is wrong and that you should be allowed to grow, even if just a little. But Artemis doesn't care. You, as a child, will remain innocent and pure, perfect for the chaste goddess.

Artemis is known to be a serious and very strict goddess, that's true, but not for you. She is completely kind and caring when it comes to you, Artemis will spoil you immensely. Anything you want, you can ask anything for her and you will have it.

You would be taken on all her hunts. She won't leave you alone at any time, Artemis can't risk you getting hurt, lost or kidnapped.

The goddess doesn't mind if other gods come near you, especially if it's her brother Apollo, but they will be warned not to lay a finger on you or try to pollute your mind. Especially Zeus and Hera, Artemis doesn't want them to corrupt you so she prefers you to stay away from her father and the Queen of Olympus, but if Zeus and Hera act in a fatherly and motherly way towards you then Artemis will allow him to get close to you. You will be taught to fend for yourself and hunt. Artemis knows this is dangerous, but she wants you to be able to protect yourself when she's not there for it. Yes, she knows not to give weapons to a child, but in her mind, it's for your own protection. Artemis will teach you to hunt all kinds of animals, both for food and to defend yourself from monsters.

Artemis' hunters would likely develop their own protection over you. You are important to the goddess they worship which automatically means you are important to them. You will be defended with claws and teeth by everyone, so you can be sure that no one from a human to a monster will ever scratch a single finger on you. Anyone who tries to hurt you will be quickly eliminated.

Because you were a shy child, you didn't have many friends, which was good for you. At least that's what Artemis thinks. She doesn't trust people and she wanted you to be a cautious person. But if any of your friends bruise you or hurt you in any way, oh boy, may Zeus have mercy on their soul, because Artemis won't.

As Artemis and Apollo are linked, Apollo will be a present figure in your life as well. He was curious about you, Artemis usually wouldn't let anyone near her and now she was obsessed with a child, delusional enough to consider herself your mother or, if you prefer, your protector. But when Apollo met you, he immediately understood why his sister was so in love with you. You were everything she held dear in a person and therefore protected and loved by her. Apollo loves to take you for a ride in his solar chariot, although he is always scolded by his sister afterwards, saying it was dangerous. He basically became a fun and loving uncle.

Artemis is tolerant and loving towards you. She wants you to be happy, she is not selfish, she will never hold you against your will (apart from the fact that she turned you into a child forever). The goddess loves you with all her heart, she wants you to go out and have friends of your own, but luckily for her, you, like her, preferred a secluded life, away from the parties and everyday craziness. You were a lot like her and that's why Artemis would keep you with her forever.

im watching blood of youth and have made it to ep 6 so far, and it is starting to grow on me after episode 5. however, since i've seen a few comparisons between the two which have led to my watching it, i would not say it has a similar vibe to mysterious lotus casebook, so i would not recommend watching one because you like the other and hope to find something similar.

to clarify, the vibe i get so far from BoY is very similar to a shounen . it has the young teenage protagonists on a grand mission, the companions coming to each other's aid, it has the fighting spirit, the leveling up (even the training sequences with hype music!) Possibly, it is also more of a traditional wuxia (but experts pls weigh in on this) because there is a much greater focus on fighting and overcoming adversities in a martial arts context. i understand there is a great political intrigue coming up at the end, so maybe things will change. for now, i see a lot about martial arts with impressive visuals, youths choosing their paths regardless of the previous generations' choices (a theme i like!) and about growth and breaking out of the shell in general

mysterious lotus casebook leans strongly towards murder-mystery and intrigues. it also deals a lot less with the passion of youth as a theme. the protagonists are older (li lianhua and di feisheng should be in their early thirties, fang duobing is likely around 20, but it's not specified). the mood varies wildly, but it's sometimes a soft ghibli and sometimes an eerie ghost story... it deals with accepting the fragility of human life, haunting/escaping the narrative, closure, death and rebirth, being queer (yeah, i'm saying this), mirror sides of human bonds and their sometimes coincidental, brittle but precious nature... despite impressive fight sequences, leveling up in martial arts really falls to the far background. much of the heart of the story is li xiangyi being given a chance to make his goodbyes to the jiang hu, but also living again as li lianhua.

also, a point that seems minor, but can lead to very different feels: the visuals of both shows are different. mysterious lotus casebook is soft colors and low contrast. it's crisp fights, but barely any magical attacks and few effects. it makes up for the lack of special effects with agile and artistic camera work, and smart use of speed, as well as elegance in the choreography. blood of youth uses more highly saturated colors. the visuals are aimed at impressing. the cgi is very decent, and can lead to a pleasant image on their own, but sharp moves are also used. i think if you come out of BoY and head into MLC expecting the same level of visual shock, you might come out thinking MLC has less impressive fights. or on the contrary, if you are not into cgi at all, you might head into BoY and think it's overkill.

not saying that you can't enjoy both! i adore MLC to death, but i enjoy a good shounen and i am starting to enjoy BoY. so far, i feel like they've told very well what they set out to tell, but i would not pit the two against each other in an objective manner. they feel like apples and pears to me, despite some jokes feeling similar (xiao se being a miser, li lianhua being an iron rooster, wu xin's bad cooking, li lianhua's bad cooking etc) the atmosphere of the two shows have extremely different vibes to me. MLC feels like blossoms falling softly on grass and waterfalls, BoY (so far) feels like setting off firecrackers and a storm on the rise. they are love letters to different aspects of the jiang hu. if you want to tackle both, please don't expect the same thing out of the two

Part 1: Armed Detective Agency

I just realized that I've finally read all the works attributed to the abilities of the author's BSD counterparts, at least for the ADA. I plan to do this for all organizations in the BSD universe so I can direct my reading and actually finish something HAHA

DISCLAIMER: I am not an expert on literature, let alone Japanese literature, and my short reviews are solely my opinion as a casual reader. These are all for fun so please don't take these so seriously!

Nakajima Atsushi Ability: Beast Beneath the Moonlight Original Work: Moon Over the Mountain

This short story has the vibes of a folktale but with existential dread sprinkled throughout. The prose is calm but the agony still reverberates. I liked this more than I though I would, perhaps because of how clean it felt. Honestly this would be one of the OG works I'd recommend to a BSD fan who wants to try classic Japanese literature.

Dazai Osamu Ability/Original Work: No Longer Human

This is probably the one novel/work most BSD fans would pick up first - and for a good reason. The themes are pretty universal albeit heavy, the tone of the narrator throughout the entire novel is gripping, the translation by Donald Keene is very readable, and it's just in the most general sense a summary of Dazai-sensei's own life. The last point must be taken with a grain of salt, however, as he's a master liar - something you'll find out if you dig more into his life and other works. If you'd like to see depression in book form, this is for you.

Kunikida Doppo Ability: Doppo Poet Original Work: Doppo Collection (probably)

Reviewing: Those Unforgettable People

I chose to talk about this one since it's the one found in the Penguin Anthology. It's an interesting mix of forms: technically, it's a short story. However, the elements of poetry and even of the essay are present - mostly the latter, tbh. Of course the whole "ideal" thing is such a Kunikida-sensei thing that it appears it almost every story he wrote, yet somehow in this one you'll have to squint a little bit more to see it. The point of this story-essay-poem thing is at the very end (the first half is quite dragging imo) is what gives it a little oomph, but honestly I much prefer his other works (specifically Old Gen and Death).

Tanizaki Jun'ichirou Ability/Original Work: Sasameyuki

You like a slow burn? You like pain? Familial drama? Maybe you'll like this. Maybe you won't. It's a mammoth of a book that feels like a series of extremely detailed telenovela episodes - not that it's necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed it despite the length because the way it ends, although hardly strong at all, ties the themes and messages of the novel cleanly into a single scene.

Miyazawa Kenji Ability/Original Work: Be Not Defeated by the Rain

It's a poem every Japanese elementary student would know. The message and style is so simple yet beautiful (I read Sulz's translation). It's joyful and so sunny... until I read the background on it. I cried over his work. Again. (Night on the Galactic Railroad PLS) Man I just love this author so much. But I'm not really a poem person to begin with, so take this review with a grain of salt HAHA

Yosano Akiko Ability/Original Work: Thou Shalt Not Die

The only complete translation I could find is written in painfully archaic English, so I won't comment on the style HAHA. But I do think the original was just as pointed in its words and message; its anti-war sentiments and middle finger to the Japanese emperor and military (at the time) so characteristically Yosano-sensei. It's sad she'd support WW2 later on - come on sensei WHY

Personally, however, I prefer her shorter poems, specifically the ones from River of Stars. But I'm not really a poem person to begin with, so take this review with a grain of salt HAHA

Izumi Kyouka Ability: Demon Snow Original Work: Demon Pond

It's been a while since I've read a play, and perhaps that's why I had a hard time getting through the first half - either that or it was quite lackluster as most of the actual story happens in the second half. Its influences from folktales and traditional Japanese theater (i.e. kabuki and noh) are very apparent - I wish I could have seen it instead of read it because of that. I think this is the first work of Kyouka's that I actually liked (I've read some of his short stories and one of his other plays) so I'll definitely recommend this one if you want to start with this author. There's also a movie adaptation of it that I haven't watched yet (but I do plan to). I think it could be much better than just reading it as is because of the visuals and mood setting, but a review on that soon. Maybe.

Fukuzawa Yukichi Ability: All Men Are Created Equal Original Work: An Encouragement of Learning (Sec. 1-2)

I couldn't be bothered to read the whole thing, but the essence of the ability only comes from the first two sections (which I'll be reviewing).

It's an essay that imo serves as a good introduction to Fukuzawa's philosophy. His views and arguments are built primarily on morality with logic acting mostly as a way to expound on his points. It's interesting, nothing really new for a contemporary reader, but at least it gives a nice background on the changing environment during the early years of Meiji-era Japan. Of course there are personal biases here (specifically the one with China - one of the greatest criticisms against Fukuzawa, even though he was supposedly progressive for his time) but imo that reflects some views of many Japanese at the time - not that they're right, of course.

But what about our special non-gifted boi?

Edogawa Ranpo Episode: The Murder on D. Street (S01E05) Original Work: The Case on D. Hill

I will tell you now: they have almost NO similarities whatsoever. Doesn't mean it's bad tho...

Okay ngl I was pretty disappointed HAHA. It's the same type of disappointment I had with Poe's Murders on the Rue Morgue (which was ironically referenced in the story) but it at least had some sense to it. I blame myself for not seeing it coming tho, given that this story is very typical of Edogawa-sensei. If you do plan to read it, however, be warned that there are implicit (?) themes that may be uncomfortable for some readers (this warning applies to most of Edogawa-sensei's work not made specifically for children HAHA).

and yes yes, of course!! trigun has an original manga where both the 98 and new one (stampede) adapted from.

there's trigun, the first manga, which has two volumes and sets up the main story, and then trigun maximum (also known as trimax) is the sequel containing the main story with its 14 volumes. all together, it's about 117 chapters! i recommend reading it greatly because it helped me understand the rest of the adaptions a lot better and also, it's the original completed story that has incredible messages and themes. nightow's art is also just fantastic and vashwood's relationship in trimax is my favorite ever. their dynamic and love blossoms in ways that is unique to the time and events of trimax and it's the most beautiful and heart wrenching depiction of their relationship.

HOWEVER, the original manga also consists of a lot of graphic stuff, i think there was a better list on twitter, but this site has most of the notable triggering mentions. i'd recommend looking at that before diving into the manga in case there are content you're not comfortable with seeing!

the other is trigun: badlands rumble, which is about an hour ish long movie released in 2010. it's a fun little one-off and is just entertaining more than anything! it also has like the funniest depiction of vashwood imo, they are so divorced in that movie, it's hilarious.

i believe during the dvd release, they also came out with a trigun anthology called trigun: multiple bullets and it's a bunch of one-shots drawn by various mangakas, including the artist for dr. stone. you can read it here, also from ultimate overhaul! the ones i like the most from the anthology are chapter 1-2 and chapter 5, but finishing the manga is necessary for chapter 5 in case u don't want spoilers!!!

“ now what mischief are you planning? ”

he looked at the bartender he grew to know, his smile growing.

“ now, who said i'm doing that? ”

“ everytime you smile is a warning to someone. ” vince laughed, finding the thing ridiculous. “ spill it. ”

when he got released, hank was nice enough to recommend a place for vince to start singing so in the moment hank got freedom, they both could be famous.

he engaged a kind of bitter conversation with her for a moment but he suddenly grew quiet.

“ what, no more to say? ” the girl, peggy, mockingly said.

“ oh hell yes. ” he stood up, taking the guitar as an instinct as he walked up to the table that caught his attention.

“ sweden! ” he excitedly said, your head snapping to meet his eyes.

vince smiled, such a warm welcome of yours.

vince started singing, you slightly raised your eyebrows clearly surprised at how beautiful his voice sounded. but some other people weren't paying attention which lead vince to hit the guitar against the table of some old man that mocked him, walking out with embarrassment of doing that in front of you.

your family and date were murmuring between them while you smiled. well, he sure knew how to give a spectacle.

you noticed how a girl ran after him making you shrug. good luck to her, you thought for some reason.

he just found out some man stole his record so he was angry, even after showing the same man a piece of his mind, passing through the street with his hands on his pocket.

he kicked a small rock out of his way, his mind filled with comforting thoughts that were just you and that smile you showed to that prick. he groaned. now he is more pissed.

as he passed a small street he heard some voices arguing which, as the gossip part of him took hold of, made him stop.

“ you are a fucking-. ”

“ i want you to finish that. ”

vince eyes widened as your melodious voice took a line in the conversation.

vince's hand flew to his mouth, hiding his gasp and smile.

a clink! was heard and a few steps approached the end of the street, vince turning to the opposite side and showing his back to you as you got out of the discussion, a few tears in your eyes as you walked in shame to your home.

vince smiled as he saw you leave, turning just in time to find that dumbass. a hand in his chest to stop him from walking away.

“ what-. ”

a punch cut him off, vince sighing as the man stumbled back into the small street before looking around to see if anyone saw them and entering the small street to show that man a piece of his mind when he noticed everyone was mounding their business.

vince's life went great after that!

peggy helped him to get a solid career, his songs being a hit and his face being in posters around the country.

but the only thing he needed was you.

he worked hard for you.

so why don't you show him some gratitude?

he has been seeing you after your break-up with that prick, you being totally oblivious to the preying eyes behind you, his obsession growing with every day he saw you. he was waiting for the perfect moment, he was sure the moment was going to be granted.

and granted it was.

he threw a party in his house, forgetting all about his fling with peggy, smiling to all the models he found alone.

but at the 5th boring model he was hearing, he saw you.

with a dress that covered your feet, flowing through the crowd, your parents behind you admiring the rich decoration.

“ excuse me. ” he interrupted the girl without even looking at her, walking to you.

a small smile was in your face as your parents greeted him.

what a turn of events.

“ y/n, right? ” vince asked as if he hadn't been stalking- protecting you for the last months.

“ yes. ” you gave him your hand which he kissed with a smile.

“ not that i'm disgusted by this or anything but, how did you knew about this? ”

your mother spoke up. “ oh! our employees are the ones that manage your record label! ” she gladly said, not seeming proud of it, just stating the truth.

“ ohhh, you are the ones that want to but my contract. ” vince laughed, glancing at you which at that you frowned. did you have something in your face?

“ yes! but no pressure, my darling, we are just very interested in your talent. ” your mother said.

vince thought about it. this was the moment.

peggy was the problem though, he founded it with her so she had to agree to it.

“ w-well, i'll think about it. ” your parents nodded their head, saying their goodbyes before walking to the inside of the house. you were about to follow them when vince's hand in your arm stopped you.

“ mr. everett? ”

he raised his eyebrows. “ damn, where is this formality coming of? ”

you shook your head. “ i feel.. ashamed. ”

“ huh? ” he smiled a bit, this situation quite funny for him.

“ i met your girlfriend, peggy. ”

now, he was mad.

“ my what?! ”

you nodded, clearly not noticing the smoke that went out his ears.

“ yes... she told me it was a misunderstanding and i just treated you horribly, forgive me. ”

“ misunderstanding? ” he asked again. what the fuck was going on?

“ i thought you were one of those men that tries to ruin a lady's reputation but, she said you weren't any of the sorts! forgive me, i was focused on the stereotypes and such. god, i feel so embarrassed. ”

vince just closed his eyes, feeling the frustration in his head. life is shit.

“ i hope we can meet each other and find ourselves to be good friends. even business partners if you accept my parents offer. ” you smiled as you were looking at your parents talking to someone, oblivious to vince murderous stance at the moment.

“ yeah. ” he sighed, opening his eyes to smile just like in time as you looked at him. “ we'll see. ”

your smile grew wider. “ thank you, mr. everett. ” you kissed his cheek before leaving to where your parents were. vince touched his cheek.

he needed to talk with peggy.

“ i'm gonna sell it. ”

peggy just kept quiet, astonished at how cruel vince's voice sounded.

“ okay? ”

she scoffed. “ well, what do you want me to say?! ”

“ that you're okay with it! ”

she stood up, laughing with no humor in it. “ you care what i think about it? ”

he chuckled, getting closer to her. “ no, i just don't want a lawsuit that waste my time. ”

peggy's eyes burned with tears.

“ after what i did-. ”

“ oh yeah! who told you you could talk to her?! ” he pointed at some random part of the house, you were clearly not there but in his mind you were.

“ who? ”

“ y'know who. ” his gaze made peggy tremble, his hands shaking. “ the girl you told to you were my girlfriend. ”

she sighed. “ it was so you didn't had a bad reputation, don't you see?! she is the daughter of important people and you just stalk her?! ”

“ I PROTECT HER! ” he slammed his hand on the bar table beside them. peggy kept quiet, afraid at how the anger of vince was now directed at her. “ and you ruined that. i was waiting for the perfect moment to tell her how i've felt for months now and you ruined it. ”

peggy closed her eyes, tears falling to her cheek. “ i'm sorry. ”

“ you will be. ” his stern voice cracked her heart. “ and i will sell it. i don't want you to be a pain in my ass later. ” he turned around in a way to show her this didn't affect him.

why would it?

he was winning.

“ we welcome vince everett to our label! ” your father screamed at the camera, cheers heard from various employees and your mother behind you while you clapped, vince hugging your father while he smiled. he then hugged you and your mother.

vince smiled as he caught the same sweet smell of perfume you used whenever you felt the event to be important. were you that happy? oh, don't worry, he was going to take all the time you both wasted back.

“ very happy you decided this, mr. everett. ” you said to him as your parents chatted with some other people in the business.

“ come on, call me vince, that makes me feel old. ”

you chuckled. “ okay, vince. ”

he is about to pass out.

“ ah, boy! ” your father walked to him, engulfing him in another hug. “ you don't know how happy you made this old man. ” your father and vince chuckled. “ remember we are here for you, any music you like to do, we'll help. ”

“ i appreciate it, sir. ” your father nodded, taking vince to meet the staff.

vince turned around in a way of asking you for help, you winking at him before walking out.

after a few weeks of vince working in your parents label, you two hit it right!

vince was funny, making you and your parents laugh in business meetings at some expensive restaurant.

vince was kind, buying you stuff while you two walked behind your parents.

vince was adorable, hiding his blush whenever you complimented his work and singing.

it was impossible to not fall for him. so after a month of knowing him well, you accepted his offer to a date.

and it was one of your most happy memories with him.

vince knew how to impress you. those months of protection really had its advantages.

“ i still feel terrible remembering how i treated you before. ” you said while cuddling to him in your parents house couch, the chimney brightening the room, after returning from an event. your heels in the floor and his jacket covering the both of you.

vince laughed, shaking his head. “ you could've shot me. ” you punched his chest, pretending to be offended.

“ we should lie about how we met. ”

vince hummed, caressing your hair while his cheek pressed against your head. “ let's say it was love at first sight. ”

“ oh yes! ” you excitedly said.

after a few minutes, you started closing your eyes as the dream invaded your eyelids. “ we should say that to our children. ” you whispered.

you didn't see it but vince's eyes shined at the mention of a family of your own. children running through the garden of your house vince bought.

THEME: Nuclear Radiation

Hello friend! This is more about apocalyptic games than Nuclear games, probably because the first thing people think of when they hear of radiation is the apocalypse. But there's some fun concepts being explored here nevertheless!

Nuclear Knights, by Gormengeist.

Nuclear Knights is a narrative-heavy action TTRPG about adventurers in a world thousands of years after a catastrophic magical nuclear war, where things have wrapped back around to high-magic pulp fantasy. Fight monsters, lead settlements, win battles of wit and worthiness, command the forgotten powers and mysterious ways- uncover what was lost, become something new.

Designed from the ground up to be as evocative of epic pulp fantasy during play as possible, the mechanics are easy to learn without sacrificing depth. Nuclear Knights attempts to be a marriage of classical dungeoneering and bold, modern collaborative storytelling.

This is a game where the radiation is more magical in nature, causing interesting, strange and esoteric mutations that you can contribute to as you play. As a dungeoneering game, there’s a lot of different pieces to help put your character together: classes, disciplines, homelands, titles and gods! Expect a lot of fun enemies and weird cursed loot.

Extinction Punk, by Extinction Punk.

Extinction Punk is a table-top role-playing game (TTRPG) that blends elements of science fiction and science fantasy to envision a future where humanity fails to stop a man-made extinction event such as a climate cataclysm, a nuclear holocaust, or a biological war.

Players of Extinction Punk get to explore the ruins of an Earth that is no longer under humanity’s control and encounter the (not necessarily) human civilizations that rise from the ashes. Together with the person organizing the game (the Game Master, or GM for short), the players create characters that will fight for survival while searching for powerful artefacts or useful mutations. 

This is a Powered by the Apocalypse game, which means it’s going to favour story over mechanics. This means that players have quite a bit more control over world creation, so if you don’t want zombies, you don’t have to have them! This game has more mutation themes and options than basic Apocalypse World, and character playbook themes include Ancient Archivist, Bunker Baby, Hardly Human, and more!

Wastoid, by Jason Tocci.

Wastoid is a gonzo, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi RPG, inspired by games like Fallout, Mutant Crawl Classics, and Gamma World. (Especially Fallout! But not so much that Microsoft should sue.) 

This game is still in the early development stage: the rules and character creation are bare-bones. However, Jason Tocci has created some insanely popular games and game systems in the past, so this game is probably going to be a huge hit once it’s fully released. 

Wastoid uses the Knave rules as designed by Ben Milton, with various inspirations from Mausritter, The Black Hack, and other games. The preview is still a pretty heavy document, with 42 pages of character options, game rules, faction management and advice on running a game that’s fun for everyone. If you like a retro, pulp-action take on nuclear fallout, this might be the game for you.

However, if you want a gonzo-apocalyptic rpg that’s a bit more fully released, I’d recommend checking out Omega Soup, by Dice Doctor Games.

Keeho: Beautiful world where are you - Sally Rooney

Even though I didn’t personally like this book I think me and Keeho would have different tastes. He doesn’t read but I think Sally Rooney is a good author for people who are starting to read in adulthood. It’s a realistic book and it’s easy to read which I think Keeho would like and he’d feel smart after reading it. Also it’s about human relations which i think he’d be interested in

Realistically I don’t know if he likes reading but I feel like he’d be cool with reading a book that’s a bit more ambitious. This book is very trippy but has a gripping plot. I think he’d like the topics covered in the book such as toxic friendships and feeling alienated. It’s a very female oriented book but I think he’d like reading from this perspective

Jiung: The Stranger - Albert Camus

Im pretty sure he also said he doesn’t read so I’d recommend him a book that’s short but has a lot to say. He’s a very smart guy and The Stranger is a philosophical novel. It’s a book about the searching for meaning but also about isolation, death and the absurd of life.

Intak: Metro 2033 - Dmitry Glukhovsky

I think Intak would like a book with a lot of action and adventure. The Metro series is a dystopian story about people living in the Moscow metro after a nuclear war. The series has a very clear anti war message but it’s also very fun. It has aliens, mutated creatures and a lot of cool world building.

Jongseob: Solaris - Stanisław Lem

This is a modern classic philosophical science fiction novel. It can be challenging for some people but the overall conclusion of the book is jaw dropping. The main themes of the book are the inadequacy of the human mind and the idea that humans aren’t the centre of the universe.

Please bare in mind that there are some problematic things in todays standards but the book was written in the 60s and most of it holds to this day

Soul: The Raven Boys - Maggie Stiefvater

It’s a cool story full of suspense and mystery. It’s a modern fantasy with vivid and relatable characters. The main character is a independent, quirky person Soul might find relatable. It’s super fun and easy to read and the story is very unusual and unexpected.

Killing Eve fanfic recommendation?

YAY YAY i have so many but i’ll narrow it down for this

common creatures -> i know not everyone likes aus but i’m in love with this one where villanelle is a literal eldritch monster because horror and longing and hunger and ugliness and humanity and—it’s not plot heavy just a beautifully written spooky love story with themes to go insane over

saving eve -> a very popular one most ppl have probably heard of, but it’s a continuation of the show that picks up right after s4. dark and gritty, trauma and mental deterioration, violence and revenge (angsty but also very sweet with a happy ending).

what cannot be said will be wept -> rot and restlessness :) kinda depressing but very poetic

feel the shiver of regret -> picks up a few days after the s2 finale and dives into the emotional fallout after rome (healing and hatred and desperation and anger and love)

these mortifying ordeals -> a year post s2 and can work as an alternative to s3 (by the same author who wrote common creatures, read everything by them pls, i wanna mention more of their fics but i’ll stop)

the art of losing -> read this if you want to feel sad

villanelle is a cat -> i know it sounds dumb but it’s so good and emotional and i—i’m not okay over it (you need an account to read this one btw, not available to guests)

I don't want to give anything away but it goes without saying that this is a must-read for anyone looking for SquidBob/SBSP fics! 💖

So yes, this is a self-rec. 🤡✍️ However, I felt it was warranted to include here as it's an unofficial sequel to the fic above. When I wrote this, I was very inspired to explore some of the themes the first fic left open-ended while creating another unique story for folks to enjoy. While the original fic is an absolute classic and I'm sure you'll love it, I'm very confident that you will enjoy this one as well if you've read that one. 😊

Pop and Licorice by clefabletime - 6 Chapters; 63K words; Rating: Explicit

So this fic was super cute to read! There were lots of memorable moments and romantic tension. Tbh, I'm not typically a fan of NSFW fics for SBSP, but if I had to rec one, this fic would be it. If you're cool with that, great. If that's not your thing, no worries! That part happens towards the end anyway so you will not be missing out on the meat of the story if you decide to skip that part (though even that was well-written). The author does a good job building up to it so it flows naturally and you can see it coming.

Another one from this author because I love their work. 😊 It's a separate one-shot from her longer fic, but it's still worth the read. I love the idea of them "secretly" dating but then everyone kinda knowing the whole time and being super supportive about it. 🥰

Super short & sweet Christmas fic, but it warmed my heart the first time I read it. Realization of feelings are the best! Will note that the author has orphaned the work, so I'm not sure if they've written anything else.
