BTS of #RWRBMovie: 'z' in your last name
TZP via HOLA:
Clifton Collins Jr., who plays my father in the film, was amazing. I knew of him. I’d seen his projects, but we’d never crossed paths before. And then we met and we just got along, thick as thieves. And he’s like an OG Mexican from Los Angeles which was so colorful. He made it feel like there was family on set. Same with Matthew being Puerto Rican. Their influences help you get into that vibe, and then you do the scene and it’s wonderful. You really bring that accuracy to it.
There’s a line in the film when Alex and Henry are in Paris, and Henry asks him a question about his mom’s campaign, and Alex starts telling him about his father and his abuela coming to the States. The line is something like “If you’re an immigrant in America and you have a ‘Z’ in your last name, there’s a lot of people in positions of power that don’t look and sound like you. I’ve been given the opportunity to be someone in the world that my father didn’t see when he was growing up.” As someone with two ‘Zs’ in his last name (laughs), that was a tough scene for me because I had to be there as Alex and not as Taylor. It was very emotional to think of my family and what they went through to come to the United States. Even though they came here a long time ago, you still think about all of the people that are coming to America today and about all of their stories. Alex realizes that his father didn’t have any role models growing up and now he’s a congressman. That fuels his fire to be the change. That was so exciting for me.
From NYT:
For both Zakhar Perez and the director, the character Alex’s biracial identity was particularly meaningful. López grew up in Panama City, Fla., with his Puerto Rican father and Polish Russian mother, while Zakhar Perez is of Mexican, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean descent and was raised in northwest Indiana, where he said there was only one other Mexican family. “Matthew and I talked a lot about the mestizo journey,” Zakhar Perez said in a video call before SAG-AFTRA, the actor’s union, went on strike. “Being part Mexican, part lots of other things, I don’t want to say you’re forgotten, but in today’s world, it’s like, you’re either this or you’re that. There’s nothing in between. I’m kind of a cultural chameleon.” “As a young Latiné queer man, I never read something that centered someone like Alex,” López said, echoing his star. “If I had been presented with this character when I was in my late teens, early 20s, it may have changed how I thought about myself.”
From Windy City Times:
Was the part about having a Z in your last name personal or the book? ML: It was personal. That was about me and Taylor. It came from a conversation that Taylor and I had when making the film.
From Metro Weekly:
Alex has a line about grow ing up in Texas as a kid with a last name that ends with Z, which is I guess something else you can relate to, Florida style. ML: And Taylor Zakhar Perez also. Taylor and I talked about that scene a lot as being something that we both understood. My aunt Priscilla Lopez is a beloved, beloved stage actor. She was in the original cast of A Chorus Line. And there's a story that she tells about Mandy Gonzalez, who was in In the Heights with her, and Mandy once told Priscilla that Priscilla made it okay for her to be someone with a Z in her last name. And that was a thing that Taylor and I spent a lot of time discussing as well. It was important to me that that scene be in the movie. There was never a chance in hell that that scene was ever getting cut.
From Teen Vogue:
TV: One of my favorite parts is when they’re in Paris, and Alex talks about being a young person of color coming up from Texas and not seeing anybody who looked like himself or his dad in politics, and Henry’s response to that simply being: “I’m learning.” I don’t know if you were in the theater for that one, but half the crowd was like, awwwww. ML: Yeah, I was for that. TV: I’m married to a white man, and I was like, that is the perfect thing a white man can say in that situation. ML: I’m married to a white man, too. Speaking as someone who is a person of color married to a white man: that’s like the ultimate thing you ever want your white boyfriend or husband or partner to say. That’s it. “I’m learning.”
ML via THR:
There’s a scene in the movie that is very much me, which I gave Taylor after they’ve had sex for the first time. They’re there in pillow talk mode, and he tells Henry about what it’s like to be the son of an immigrant with a Z in your last name. It was really important to me to talk about growing up with a Z in your last name and even just how our names are pronounced, the spellings of our names sometimes if you have Latin ancestry. To have to answer for your name has always been something for me that I struggled with until I stopped struggling with it. So, I needed to put that into Alex’s story and when it came time to shoot that scene again, it was something I didn’t have to explain to Taylor Zakhar Perez. He got it instantly. The only thing that I did screw him up with is like, “We’re going to do this [scene] as a oner, and we’re going to do it as a top shot that starts in a wide shot and comes all the way down to your face, and we’re not going to leave this scene until you get it right in one.”

on the outside, her house was bright, standing tall, polished clean with rushed ferocity. perfectly placed bundles of flowers littering the yard, redolent with a fragrance typically only found in expensive perfumes. sat by the front door was a generic mat which mockingly read the word ‘Welcome!’ on it, with decorative cursive letters and a big red heart as the dot of the exclamation mark. the inside was supposed to match the outside. identically polished walls and fake plants that mirrored what passersby could notice from a mile away.
that, however, was not true. things didn't always look the same on the inside as they did on the outside. the almost-too-perfectly held-up front served one purpose and served it well. to deceive. it’s not wrong to assume that a home so perfect was inhabited by a family just as perfect as its residence. so, people find it hard to believe her when the pristine little “rich” girl has something else to say about it.
she didn’t want to speak against the judgment, having the basic knowledge that living in a comfortable house with two working parents was supposedly considered lucky. it would seem ungrateful to complain. how could she complain when she knew others weren’t as fortunate as her? kids even younger than her constantly wondered when and where their next meal would be, but not her.
her house sat tall, all the way at the top of the hill, towering over the rest of the neighborhood. there was an eerie stillness that was always washed upon the house. it was inescapable, a labyrinth of ear-ringing silence, with the not-so-occasional muffled arguments from behind her parent’s bedroom door. she didn't want to live her life surrounded by the quiet, but the yelling from the two people who were supposed to love each other were sounds she wanted to dispute.
Alora sat idly in her room, not making any noise so she could hear her arguing parents who had moved from their room, travelling through the hallway and quieting as they moved down the stairs. she never understood why they continued to stay together, especially since they argued more than they spoke. most of the time they argued about her. about how she continuously acted out, with no “real” reasons for her rebellions. her stepmother wanted to send her away to some boarding school, attempting to convince Alora’s father that it would fix her.
to be honest, the constant complaining from her stepmother had begun to grow on her father, he was considering sending Alora away to whatever school was the cheapest and the furthest. that’s why Alora had shot up the second she heard their footsteps echo downstairs. she hastily packed one small backpack full of her necessities. it was only a few hours before dark and she had to wait until her parents were far enough that they wouldn’t hear her quick movements.
Alora knew that eventually her father would give into her stepmother’s endless whining and send her away so she had to take matters into her own hands. she was going to run away tonight. no ideas or plans, just anywhere from her evil stepmother and that unknown school she wanted to send her to. Alora would rather be anywhere than there. she wanted to leave on her terms, not because she was sent away.
she packed lightly, having no clue where she was going or how long she’d be out. she took a few hair things, basic toiletries, and two outfits, deciding to have a three-switch-outfit routine. her bag also held the money she’d saved over the years, a Polaroid camera, a notebook with pens, and snacks and water that she snuck from the kitchen hours prior when her parents were too busy arguing to hear her. on the outside, it seemed like she was ready, but deep down, she was terrified. she had no idea what she was going to do, or how she was going to do it, but she knew there was nothing else she could’ve done. tonight was her only chance to escape.
uncomfortable silence rang through the house, and Alora paid no mind to it, then paused. it was too quiet. she didn’t hear any yelling, stomping, or door slamming. pausing her packing, she tiptoed to her door, putting her ear up to it, attempting to hear anything at all. it was still quiet for a few moments before she heard angry footsteps up the stairs. panic exploded through her entire body as she rushed to her bag, flinging it under her bed and straightening herself just as her bedroom door fell open.
it was her father, who had collected himself almost as soon as her door was opened. he calmly walked into her room and closed the door behind him, he sat on the end of her neatly made bed, signaling her next to him. Alora didn’t listen, crossing her arms with a knowing look on her face. “don’t let her send me away, Dad. i’m your daughter!” her father sighed, fingers pinching at the bridge of his nose. she knew her words wouldn’t change anything. he already made up his mind. he’d always pick his beloved wife over his only daughter, the daughter who didn’t need to be sent away, but rather needed help.
“Lora-”
Alora scoffed, “no, Dad! you always listen to her, and never listen to me! she hates me! all she wants to do is get rid of me, and she can only do that if she convinces you to do it too.” her father stood up angrily from his spot on her bed, taking a stomped-step towards her, prompting her to take an equal step back. you could see her stepmother standing behind him, leaning on your doorframe with a cocky smirk on her face. she was finally going to get what she wanted. “don’t talk about your mother like that, Alora!” he yelled at her, pointing his finger up at her face.
“she’s. not. my. mother.”
her father’s face went red with anger as he stomped out of her bedroom, her stepmother having already left, assuming Alora’s defeat. the door slammed behind him, leaving the walls around it shaking. fury bubbled deep in her stomach, leaving a dark pit inside both her heart and her soul. she was angry and her face showed it, but her actions didn’t. assuming she’d be on her way to the boarding school by morning, Alora moved quickly, perfecting every single plan she had for escaping.
Tumblr media
sat uncomfortably on her bed, door locked, window open, and leg shaking, Alora waited. she’d be leaving any time now, just waiting for when she knew both her parents would be sleeping, unaware of the plans she was about to pursue. nerves had crept up into her stomach, having no idea what she was getting herself into. it was too late to change her mind since it was either that God forsaken boarding school or life on her own.
she tried to convince herself that her dad could change. maybe if she begged hard enough he’d give in. maybe she’d have him remembering that that was his daughter he was throwing out, his only daughter, the daughter he was supposed to protect, through and through. nothing could change his mind. he hadn’t bothered to pay attention to her, her effervescent personality withering away over the years as she grew older. she assumed his deep but hushed hatred for her came from the abandonment of her real mother. her birth mother.
the whole reason for Alora running away was because of her father's relentlessness, his refusal to change his mind. though he was silent, he never failed to show in his face and actions the gaping hole of resentment he felt. even if he disliked her mother, he still told Alora about her. she was no stranger to the fact that her mother was a Goddess. the Goddess of justice and revenge; Nemesis. so she was aware of her lineage, which led her to believe that’s where some of her father's disapproval of her came from.
time was nearing midnight. Alora knew she should’ve felt tired, on the brink of sleep, but she was far from it. anticipation of her next moves kept her wide awake and alert. the silence of her house and her unknowing parents let her know it was time to go. she wondered if they’d go looking for her when they found she was gone. probably not, since they were going to send her away anyway. her father would probably want to look, or at least file a missing person’s report, but with her stepmother here, Alora was sure she’d find some way to convince her father otherwise.
it was a few minutes after the stroke of midnight, and Alora was hastily tying up her shoes and slipping on her warmest sweatshirt. it wasn’t winter yet, but the autumn nights tended to be cold either way, which sucked since that’s when she planned on leaving. with her bag slung over both shoulders and her bedroom lights shut off, she climbed out of her window and onto the roof
kept right in front of it, shutting the window behind her. one of her father’s ladders was previously set up right under her window, which she used to get down from the roof. she felt the chilly autumn wind run through her hair, sending chills and nerves down her spine. her hands felt sweaty and clammy as she climbed down, despite the almost-freezing air surrounding her. as soon as her Converse-clad feet touched the ground, Alora was gone, immediately running into the dark, creepy woods that sat behind her house, not once looking back. failing to notice the flick of a bedroom light going on, right where her parents slept.
Tumblr media
it was so cold out, and Alora had no idea how long she had been running. she never stopped running. literally. not stopping to walk or jog, just constant running, without any breaks, wanting to get as far from her home as possible, filled to the brim with the fear of getting caught. one thing she knew, though, was that she was out of her home state of New Jersey and past the state line into New York. it wasn’t far, considering she lived right on the edge of New Jersey, but at least it ensured she wouldn’t be found easily. her parents would probably assume she was somewhere in their local town.
light hadn’t begun to shine yet, but she assumed it would soon, so she slowed down, deeming it safe enough to finally take a break. she was panting, desperate to catch her breath. there was a sign she noticed a few miles back, listing the upcoming gas stations and motels, which she planned on finding and staying in. money wasn’t a problem for her, as she had spent the last six years of her life saving all her birthday, Christmas, couch, and even street money.
up ahead were the bright shining lights of a somewhat nicely-looking motel. staying there all alone made her nervous, but she had to. she had to get away from the prison that was called her home. she entered the motel check-in building with caution, purchasing a room for one night. as soon as she was in her temporary room, the door locked and lights off, with her head comfortably laying on the pillow, the way she quickly fell into a deep sleep was like she blacked out the second she was in bed.
Tumblr media
the bright, screeching laughs of a young girl echoed around, bouncing off the dark walls of her mind. flashes of light blinked around her as she stood, slumped in the middle of a strange room. the little girl’s giggles danced delicately with those of another girl as they skipped around her, hand in hand. it was foggy and blurry around the gloomy teenager. the warm haze of the area around her was unfamiliar, it stirred the war deep within your consciousness.
things seemed off, however, but whatever it was, was so subtle that she had trouble figuring out what it was, figuring out what was right from wrong. her laughs reflecting over the rounded walls of her mind were ethereal, spewing with remnants of the sun’s humid summer heat. Apollo was being generous – the girl thought, casting the warmth of the bright star across the backs of the three girls, despite the shadows lurking deep in the corners of the endless room. the blinding should’ve been enough for her to turn away, shield her untouched eyes from the hurtful rays.
in her isolated state, she felt nothing, hardly able to feel even herself. but, jealousy, surprisingly a common emotion within the girl, bubbled in the deep depths of her soul, and she had her mother to blame for it. i’m sorry! – she called, to no one in particular, no one who cared to listen, not as if there was anyone there anyway. she pleaded to be heard, begging for forgiveness, but it wasn’t truly her. well, it was her. but it wasn’t?
it was the little girl. an almost identical, but younger, shorter copy of the towering girl before her. and suddenly, she was aware – heavily aware, even if it was dangerous. is this a dream? – she asked, it was impossible to tell if her lips had moved, allowing the words to leave her mouth. or if it was a thought that had somehow managed to leave the confines of her mind that was in her mind. It was like a labyrinth. it scared her. no – there was no way this could be a dream, instead, a nightmare. one that she felt she was trapped in, with no doors, no windows, and no way out.
was it possible to feel trapped in your mind? be trapped in your mind? i mean, that’s what she assumed, that it was her mind she was stuck in, feet firmly stuck to the bottomless pit-like ground. maybe her subconscious had led her into the dreams and nightmares of someone else, probably someone she knew, right? maybe it was the other little girl? that little girl who had been skipping around with – what she assumed – was a younger version of herself.
the young girls flashed by quickly, almost like a glitch on a computer screen. having already seen her close enough, she was able to both memorize and recognize the smaller version of herself, but she was also able to get a glimpse at her nightmare version’s companion. with her fingers tightly grasping onto her friend’s, the small girl skipped around, beaming with smiles and laughter, living a carefree life. despite her young age, tight, defined curls framed her tan face, cascading down her back, and bouncing with each step of her feet on the hazy unlit ground.
she wondered who the girl was, and how she knew the miniature girl meant to represent herself. in her dream state, nothing, none of anything she’s witnessing, – herself, the other girl, the running around, the laughing. – none of it was familiar. not one noise, color, or movement sparked any form of recognition in her intellect. how could a past version of herself have such a vivid, gut-wrenching sense of familiarity, yet feel so unimaginably unfamiliar deep, deep inside her?
the confusion bouncing between the walls of her mind like a ping pong ball, making her head twist and turn with every new direction, always stranger than the one before it. it felt like long, excruciating hours had gone by, where she was just stuck in the middle of the pitch-black darkness, physically – and mentally – unable to pick up her feet and move, even just the smallest inch. She felt held back, physically tied down to the room surrounding her, hands bound, feet changed, ensuring she had no way of escaping.
all she could do was watch the two young girls as their laughter faded to sobs, their skipping in joy to running away in fear. how quickly Apollo’s rays of sun turned into Selene’s ethereal glow of the moon. a full moon. she had pulled away from her nightmare confinement, slipping back into the real world with the echo of her past self’s ear-piercing scream, rupturing and spilling deep down to the crack already formed in her soul. oh, and the loose thump of a small child’s body dropping on the ground.
Tumblr media
Alora flung herself up, blankets pooled around her feet, which then touched the cold floor as her body stood up, wobbling, warm tears sobbing down her face. her side of her cheap motel bed almost completely drenched in sweat, her body shivering in sync with her sobs. she searched desperately for any ounce of oxygen, though it seemed every atom had been sucked away, her lungs deflated, struggling to bounce back.
it felt like she was dying. her heart refused to slow, even going as far as to pump more blood, increasing the deafening pounding that she heard in her head, her ears, and all around her. weak, shaky legs giving out, her body made a thud on the ground, leaving her a heaving mess on the hardwood floor. mouth wide open, head going numb from the lack of air altogether. her throat burned dry, tears cascading down her cheeks, her clammy hands clawing at her throat as if claws would appear and slice them open, any way to let air in.
she had no idea what was happening to her, or why it was happening. maybe it was connected to her dream? she didn’t know, only wanting to gain back control of her own body. scrambling to collect herself, the shadow looming outside of her room window went unnoticed as it flowed away, eyes casting a strong gaze upon the poor girl. when her body allowed the stuffy air in, she began to calm down, legs curling up to her chest, arms wrapped around them. she had stopped crying, but was sniffing like crazy, shaking, her mind so unbelievably overwhelmed that she struggled to even think about anything that just happened. she couldn’t fathom the idea of sleeping again, mind traumatized from what she had just been through.
Alora rested her chin between her knees, sat and wrapped in a tight ball. it was only the first night of running away and this is how it turns out? how is she going to survive the rest of her time alone? she was clueless, any plans or ideas she once had were long gone, floating around the dark and cold motel room. her body still shook and shivered, numbness filling herself. she had no clue what was in store for her, but only hoped it wouldn’t be as bad as the first night. oh boy was she as wrong as she was naive.

Potential Profile
Jordyn Padgett (she/her) spent 18 long Sim years in her sleepy farming hometown of Henford-on-Bagley. As soon as she was able, she fled to the bustling city of San Myshuno, rooming with 3 other Sims in the Fashion District. One of those Sims was a woman by the name of Penelope Puri (Penny Pizzazz by default), a Simfluencer who skyrocketed to stardom through her videos reviewing celeb style fails and budding fashion trends. Penelope taught Jordyn the tricks of her trade, and now Jordyn has a following of her own--though she only makes content related to movies, TV, and the art world. Her ultimate goal is to become a world-renowned art critic, attending shows/ galleries around the world and leaving her mark on the industry. She knows she'll have to compete with the juggernaut that is Diego Lobo, but she greatly admires him and hopes they can collaborate one day.
She likes to go out and have fun, but Jordyn isn't a huge party animal. She's just as likely to prefer a night in with Netflix to a night out at a bustling bar. She's got a tight-knit group of friends with eclectic interests, and she prefers it that way. Jordyn has been on her fair share of dates with guys, but it's only recently that she realized her lack of attraction to them. Though she's not out to anyone, she's excited to explore her newfound identity as a lesbian.
Jordyn cares greatly about her health and personal style. She's seen enough denim and overalls to last her a lifetime--it's high quality clothing only from here on out. When she's not working or hanging out with her friends, you can find her shopping online, at a yoga studio, or a gym. Jordyn wishes she could eat healthier, but her notorious sweet tooth prevents her from cutting sugar out of her life altogether. She doesn't do dieting, either--she believes it can lead to unhealthy relationships with food.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope you enjoyed this off-the-cuff profile! I'm thinking of creating roommates for her. Let me know if you'd like me to post them as well!
(Note: I don't currently own the Cottage Living EP [that or Cats and Dogs, Horse Ranch, and For Rent]. I'm trying to see if I can find a coupon/cheaper way to purchase it, but if not, I'll have to wait until the next sale. I'm not paying EA 40 whole United States Dollars for just one pack lmao. So if I make Jordyn available for upload before then, just be aware that she'll be missing those official aspects of her backstory. Sorry about that!)
hiiiii I heard about your essay writing skills
I have this friend who has a huge crush on Jakub Gierszał, can you write an essay about him?
Tumblr media
hiiii 👀 of course, i’m at your service! Jakub Gierszał is an accomplished, talented and I think still a bit underrated polish actor. Due to the fact he spent his childhood in Germany, he is also bilingual which gives him much more job opportunities when it comes to working abroad. He made some projects outside of Poland but still, he built his career there. Quite broad and diverse career in my humble opinion. At the beginning of it he won Shooting Star Award which is prestigious one for promising young actors in Europe. He debuted with film All That I Love in 2008 when he still attended acting classes. However, it was Suicide Room in 2011 which brought him the popularity. He played depressed, entitled, well-off teenager who gets lost in the cyber life. He even dyed his (beautiful blonde! ✨) hair for this role. No wonder why he got two awards and one nomination for it! Later on he starred in a couple of german productions. In the meanwhile he got leading role in Yuma (2012) telling the story of young Zyga who becomes 'Robin Hood’ of his town. In 2014 he got small role in American film Dracula Untold. A project, which seems interesting for me because of the idea behind it, is definitely Lure (Córki Dancingu). It is combination of the fairytale and musical on the basis of polish folklore. I must say that sometimes I still blast the soundtrack from this movie! Overall, 2017 was the year of GIERSZAŁ. He starred in four films and all of them were part of Gdynia Film Festival, let me introduce: Najlepszy (Breaking the limits) - based on the real story of Jerzy Górski, who was addicted to drugs but thanks to sport he fought dark times in his life and won Double Ironman. (Kuba killed it with this role 🤧🤍), next one was Beyond words which takes in the subject of immigration and identity. Spoor is about retired woman who becomes mixed up in a mystery when avid hunters in her mountain village start turning up dead and there are deer tracks next to their bodies. Then there was also film called Zgoda which takes place after the second world war and it is quite tough movie about sacrifice and love. I think Kuba chooses his work really precisely and he needs to be convinced to the project and characters he plays. It was quite chaotic during pandemic, but he even agreed to star in tv series which was quite shocking for me. He had been always denying to take part in tv series because it were films he loved the most. Nevertheless, he played a killer psycho and I was sold, me loves. Recently we could see him in Zadra where he plays a rapper! 👀👀👀 and in Doppelgänger where he plays a spy, the plot takes place in 70s/90s. I’m sorry for being chaotic! I might have omitted something but I said about his most acclaimed projects. I admire Kuba’s energy, he is a modest, kind and adorably shy human being, who doesn’t like attention and he is really private. He just wants to do his job and I admire him a lot. I could listen to him forever, his train of thoughts are always interesting! I think that the future of polish cinema is in good hands. Recommend to look his projects up ✨🤍
To give my general 13 Who feelings since I asked:
Ryan was my favorite Chibnall era companion though I suspect Tosin probably felt pretty burned by lack of material and hope he's on to better things that make him happier. He's quite a good actor IMO. Makes a lot of interesting choices when left to the background.
Dan and Graham were both quite charming but just not character types I need from stories right now. Dan also really suffered from not getting, like, any breathing room as a character. It ends up feeling like after Brian Williams, Chibnall needed a comfort older white dude in the TARDIS.
Yaz I like on paper but never felt like she got the focus or exploration the many interesting things about her deserved. Can You Hear Me was a very clever retcon to explain her lack of material in series 11 in addition to being poignant though it does totally change her from the character introduced in Woman Who Fell to Earth.
I like the idea of the Timeless Child and the opportunities it offers and relate a surprising amount to the whole forgotten child childhood trauma questions about identity, but think it stalled on examining that after the quite underrated Once, Upon Time.
Sacha Dhawan is a superb actor who elevated a lot but I did not care at all for the direction the Master was taken in. The lack of acknowledgment of Missy was painful, the Nazi stuff doubly so, and the redestriction of Gallifrey just annoying.
Jodie Whittaker is wonderful and very Doctory. I wish she could have played more range though and really wanted to see her play a fuller relationship plot because I love the Doctor in that kind of thing and think she'd have nailed it.
Loved the sonic. Didn't love the TARDIS. Liked series 12, apart from Spyfall part 2. Thought Resolution and Eve of the Daleks were fantastic. Complicated feelings about Flux and how it all in my view fell apart (well documented that Chibnall wrote it while it went and it shows). Thought series 11 was the right idea but didn't think it was good enough overall.
Really enjoyed writers like Vinay Patel, Ed Hime, Joy Wilkinson, Maxine Alderton, and Nina Metivier contributing, and even controversially Pete McTighe, though I wish they got a bit more polish the way RTD or Moffat added sparkle to their guest writers. It's probably not fair to expect Chris Chibnall to meet the dialogue crispness of two of the best living British TV writers who proceeded him. It's not that he's bad, but Moffat and Davies are really special talents on that front and a tough act to follow.
Thought the best director of the era was Nida Manzoor and hope they get her back. Also loved Wayne Yip again but sounds like he didn't love doing it.
Some episodes and elements I really liked but overall the era of modern Who I'm coolest on. Still would take it over several classic runs any day.
※  This setion is still a work in progress. Giselle is a teritary antagonist and user of the stand Nephthys.  Under the control of a brainwashing fleshbud, she provides the other Agents of DIO with the precise location of the Joestar Party with the help of her stand to allow them to prepare their attacks.  Despite spending a good amount of time in Monaco living with her biological father, she's a California native and grew up in the Golden State. A confident woman with expensive taste, she carries herself with a haughty façade that can quickly become grating to people that aren't used to her. It isn't something she necessarily likes doing, but it's become a bit of a defense mechanism to mask her lacklustre social skills. While she does her best to fight it, Giselle has a history of being forced into doing things she doesn't want to do; be it her mother uprooting from Huntington Beach to force her into acting at a young age, or DIO implanting a fleshbud to control her into tracking the exact movements of the Joestar party with her stand, Nephthys, she's often struggled having her own autonomy—something that greatly bothers her and causes her to occasionally lash out at those unaware of her 'baggage'.
How much of “Jack” as we know him do you think is Joseph putting on a persona? I love your analysis of him as a character so much!!
Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoy my posts! 💖
That’s a difficult question to answer at this point, since we only have the demo, some teasers, and Sleepy Time Jack to draw hints from. I suspect that there’s a lot more of Joseph’s personality in Jack than he would be comfortable acknowledging.
All of us wear a persona when interacting with other people. It’s just human nature. Most of the time the persona is of the person we want to be rather than who we think we really are deep down. I think that’s Jack’s situation in a nutshell.
Sunny Day Jack is an ideal self Jack wants to be. Joseph is not.
That doesn’t mean Joseph was a bad person, even if he was a troubled teen who struggled to get along with others. He seems to have befriended his co-stars as an adult. He was invited to the wedding of one and called “a good man” by the other. He seemed genuinely concerned about doing right by the children in the interview with the psyche consultant despite mistakes he made when he was a teen.
It seems like Joseph was just a man who made mistakes as a teen. He learned from his mistakes, matured, and was trying to do better in the present after reinventing himself. However, despite his efforts and friendships, being reminded of his life as Joseph now is traumatic for Jack.
We see shades of Joseph disliking his past self in the psyche recording. He reinvented himself by changing at least his last name and running away. Jack is Joseph running away from his past identity and self for a second time. Even in the interview, he seems uncomfortable thinking about his past.
Judging by how some of the comments from his school days still haunt him enough for him as Jack to turn it around onto one of his hypothetical victims, it’s possible that being reminded of his past would cause a similar traumatized reaction.
Hell, for all we know, the yogurt could have reminded Jack of his time as Joseph Cullman and not as [Redacted] Haberdae.
I suspect the Jack persona is, in a way, surface level, much like the makeup, clothes, and wig he wore to dress up as the character when acting. It’s still mostly the same person underneath, but with a much more polished presentation.
Even the birthmark on his cheek is covered up when he’s dressed up. Judging by the same mark appearing on his hypothetical child, that mark could have been inherited from one of his parents as well.
Jack has no tattoos, which Joseph regrets getting. Jack is always happy and cheerful, never getting tired and worn down, needing to get a fix to make it through the day (cigarettes, if not worse). Jack was beloved by so many people across the USA, both young and old. It might be another reason why the interviewer digging for dirt, such as nude photos, set him off.
Sunny Day Jack is “clean” and wholesome. He was the “candy coating” over more unpleasant things on the show, and I think that Jack is the “candy coating” over Joseph in the present day.
The jokes, the positive affirmations, the colorful clothes, the makeup and hair, the squeaky-clean G-rated personality who could never swear... (Heck, he even smells like fresh laundry according to Sauce. The scent of nicotine lingers for a long, long time even after a person quits, so this is a deliberate change as well.) I think these are the parts that make up Sunny Day Jack.
The parts of Joseph that Jack has kept, at least in my opinion, is the more emotional side of him, the unguarded bits. These include his fears of being alone and forgotten, his love for MC, and being so very starved for love and physical affection.
I mean, hell, the fact that Jack makes out with MC and even has sex is absolutely something we can attribute to coming from Joseph rather than Jack. After all, that sort of NC-17 rated behavior is not fitting for a wholesome kids TV host.
Of course there’s also the yandere tendencies. Violence is a bridge too far for Sunny Day Jack, but those urges are there in Joseph. He can justify the sex as another way of expressing love, but hurting someone? Killing someone? He can’t justify that as the character he’s playing. But he needs to get rid of these threats, and he’s just so angry with them for getting in his way. This is why I think he basically talks the person into doing harm to themselves.
Ultimately, I do believe that the person we know as Jack really is Joseph, just lost in his role. Everything ideal about himself is attributed to being Jack. Anything “unclean” is attributed to the person he was before. Jack has reinvented himself as the character, but the core of Joseph is still in there, whether he likes it or not.
The 🍮- is my blog signature @slimearchon
🍮- You hummed quietly, your eyes focused on your task. The glass bottle resting on the night stand beside you. You had on a face mask while you completed your task.
🍮- The two of you laying in bed since the moon was high in the sky and birds snoozing in their trees. The pungent smell coming from the open vial clouded the room.
🍮- Black nail polish patiently painted on your lover’s hand. You stuck your tongue out a bit as you focused on not getting the paint on his skin.
🍮- His hand twitched and you tightened your grip on his hands.
🍮-“Don’t move, I’m not going to redo them again if you smudge them, Xiao.” You warned, giving him a pointed a look at him.
🍮- It was a difficult to give him a glare when he has an identical face mask on. His amber eyes standing out against the white sheet.
🍮- His hair was pulled away from his face with a fuzzy bunny ear headband, he looked soft and adorable.
🍮- “Sorry, I’ll keep still.” He said, his eyes going back to the Tv that was playing one of his favorite dramas. You settled back down. Almost done with his first hand.
🍮- The two of you were doing a self-care night, the week had drained you both and this was the solution to rid yourself from any built up stress.
🍮- Xiao with his headband had already relieved fifty percent of your stress. The main reason you were taking forever to do his nails was because you kept sneaking peeks up at him.
Just a small ficlet because I thought this was cute. 💙💚
For many of her contemporaries, Patricia Highsmith was too strong a poison. When I was researching my biography of her, the English crime writer HRF Keating told me that when the woman he knew as Pat was invited to join the Detection Club — formed by writers including Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers in 1930 — one member was so outraged they told him, “If she’s in, I leave.”
And when Highsmith published The Talented Mr Ripley in 1955, the first of five Ripley books, readers were shocked by its amorality. Her central character was a charming psychopath, a murderer who evades punishment.
That first novel is a story many of us know from Anthony Minghella’s sumptuous 1999 film: Ripley, a young man with a shadowy past (played in Minghella’s version by Matt Damon), is tasked by the shipping magnate Herbert Greenleaf to persuade his estranged son, Dickie (Jude Law), to return from Italy to New York. But a complex web of desires prompts Ripley to commit murder and assume Dickie’s identity.
As a character he is an extraordinary creation, one who has also been played on screen by Alain Delon, Dennis Hopper and John Malkovich. Now, in an eight-part Netflix series, it’s the turn of Andrew Scott to step into his polished Ferragamos.
Highsmith died in 1995 at the age of 74, in her adopted home of Locarno, Switzerland, and was never a huge seller in America. Her US editor Otto Penzler, who published Highsmith in the 1980s, told me that Americans found her fictional world hard to navigate: “There’s a certain repellent quality to her books. The Ripley novels are so amoral that a lot of people are simply uncomfortable, because they don’t have a guidepost.” Others found that discomfort compelling: in 2008, the Times nominated Highsmith as the greatest-ever crime writer.
The transgressive nature of Ripley has its roots in her life. Before Highsmith was born (in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1921), her mother tried to abort her by drinking turpentine. As a small child she hated her stepfather, Stanley, with such a passion that she fantasised about killing him. When she was 14 her mother asked her, “Are you a les? You are beginning to make noises like one.”
Highsmith later recalled in a letter how worthless this remark had made her feel. “It reminds one of ‘Look at that hunchback, isn’t he funny’ on the street,” she said. These childhood experiences — she once said she was born under “a sickly star” — fed her dark imagination. “All this probably caused my propensity to write bloodthirsty stories of murder and violence,” she told a journalist.
When Highsmith sat down to write The Talented Mr Ripley in 1954, she had already published three novels: Strangers on a Train (1950), The Price of Salt (in 1952, under a pseudonym, and later republished as Carol) and The Blunderer (1954).
She first had the inspiration for Ripley in 1952, while staying at a hotel in Positano on the Amalfi coast. It was early one morning and as she stepped on to the balcony overlooking the sea, she spotted a solitary man walking along the beach. “I could just see that his hair was straight and darkish,” she later wrote. “There was an air of pensiveness about him, maybe unease.”
She dashed off the novel at speed, over six months, while living in a rented cottage in Lenox, Massachusetts. “It felt like Ripley was writing it, it just came out,” she said. As she was working out the plot, she wrote in her notebook the word “EVIL” in capital letters next to the heading “Subject”.
Early titles for the book included The Thrill Boys and Business Is My Pleasure before she settled on The Talented Mr Ripley. “What I predicted I would once do, I am doing already in this very book,” she scribbled in her notebook. “That is, showing the unequivocal triumph of evil over good, and rejoicing in it. I shall make my readers rejoice in it, too. Thus the subconscious always proceeds the consciousness, or reality, as in dreams.”
Although there had been villains of this sort before — think Iago in Othello — none inhabited a universe in which they not only survived at the end but positively thrived. “I have a lurking liking for those that flout the law,” Highsmith told one interviewer.
By Ripley Under Ground (1970), the second novel in the series, Tom has become a serious collector of art, owning works by Van Gogh, Magritte and Picasso. With his wife, Heloise, he lives in a house outside Fontainebleau, their lifestyle financed by art fraud. In the course of the remaining books Ripley goes into battle with the mafia; garrottes someone on a train; and hits the nightclubs of Berlin dressed in drag.
The character of Ripley, shaped not so much by crime fiction as by existentialist literature — Highsmith was a keen student of Dostoevsky, Kierkegaard and Camus — continues to cast his shadow over culture. There are traces of him in Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Lecter, Bret Easton Ellis’s Patrick Bateman (American Psycho), Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter Morgan, and Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) in Saltburn.
Seventy years after Highsmith created her calculating killer, will Netflix give us the real Ripley? Other film versions have struggled with his talent for getting away with murder.
In René Clément’s 1960 Plein soleil, an adaptation of The Talented Mr Ripley, Delon is arrested, an ending that Highsmith described as “a terrible concession to so-called public morality”. In Minghella’s take, the killer is given the gestation of a conscience. “There’s so much nihilism in film right now,” the director told The New York Times. “If I’m going to tell a story that’s so bleak and so much a journey of a soul, if in the end Ripley was just going about his business, what’s the journey?”
Steven Zaillian, writer and director of the Netflix series, has said that he tried to imagine how Highsmith herself would adapt the novels if she were alive today. The fact that he had the luxury of eight episodes meant he could be “faithful to the story, tone and subtleties of her work”. He won an Oscar for his screenplay of Schindler’s List and hopes to film all five Ripley books.
Certainly, his adaptation of The Talented Mr Ripley is the most faithful I have seen. Scott captures Ripley’s strange blankness, his slippery quality, his moral emptiness. Throughout the series — shot in black and white on location in Italy and New York — various characters seek the truth about his identity. “May I ask you to describe Thomas Ripley?” an Italian detective asks Marge Sherwood (played by Dakota Fanning, opposite Johnny Flynn as Dickie). It’s a question that Ripley himself can’t quite answer.
In a conversation published in Interview magazine, Scott recently told his fellow actor Ben Whishaw why this inscrutability appealed to him: “There’s a trend in drama at the moment to make the characters accessible: ‘What’s their backstory?’ What’s wonderful about Tom Ripley is that you have no idea.’’’
In fact, we do know a few things from the 1955 novel: for instance, that Ripley’s parents drowned in Boston Harbour and that he was raised by an aunt. But when Ripley describes his background to Herbert Greenleaf he feels uneasy, Highsmith writes, “the way he might have felt if he had been lying, yet it had been practically the only thing he had said that was true”.
And what about his sexuality? In the novel Ripley describes homosexuals as “perverts”. He tells Dickie that he’s not “queer”, and jokes that, since he can’t make up his mind whether he likes men or women, he’s thinking of giving up both. “As a matter of fact, there was a lot of truth in it,” Highsmith writes in The Talented Mr Ripley. “As people went, he was one of the most innocent and clean-minded he had ever known.”
The casting of a gay actor in the new series adds another level of ambiguity. “If Tom Ripley was in a gay bar, I’m not sure that he would fit in there,” Scott told Interview. “Nor do I think he’s a straight character. I think he’s a queer character, in the sense that he’s very ‘other’.”
So fully did Highsmith imagine Ripley that at times he was almost real to her. When an award certificate she had been given for The Talented Mr Ripley became mildewed, she took it out of its frame, cleaned it and scribbled “Mr Ripley and” before her name; he deserved the honour as much as her, she said. She sometimes signed letters “Pat H, alias Ripley” and in a copy of Ripley Under Ground given to a friend, she added the inscription “For Charles with love … from Tom (Pat)”.
While researching Highsmith’s biography, I discovered that in many ways Ripley was the author’s alter ego. Like him, she was a mass of contradictions: a gay woman who could be misogynistic; an individual who held extreme and at times highly offensive views, but who could be a kind and loyal friend; a figure who had many identities. “With every person she knew, she was always a different Pat,” one of her friends told me. “That’s why it is so difficult to define her character. She had many facets, many different projections.”
Ripley is the ultimate disrupter: a man who reinvents himself with the ease of a quick change of clothes; a possible psychopath who has a taste for the finer things in life; an outsider determined to forge a better future for himself; a ruthless killer who cries at Keats’s grave.
He is that very current figure: the consummate self-reinventor, a modern-day everyman who will do whatever it takes to survive. And we, as readers, and soon as viewers again, are encouraged to cheer him along.'
@crossedwithblue prefacing this with a warning that its zero-research only vibes but here is how I would want hair if I was doing a TV series based around Mansfield Park. Sorry if its a bit sloppy I'm ill and it's gone midnight :
-Sir Thomas- Wig/close cropped blonde hair. I want him wearing his wig in most scenes but I need him to have it off when he's offering to break Maria's engagement to Rushworth.
-Lady Bertrm- covered with fancy caps.
-Mrs Norris- second hand fron Lady Bertram
-Maria and Julia- identical until their rivalry over Henry Crawford gets going, then diverging in to two different styles. Julia's hairstyle returns to "normal " Once she's over Crawford, but Maria's "heart eyes at Henry" do is here to stay
-Fanny- Good cases have been made for Fanny having short hair  and I could go with that, but pre-haircut (and post if it grows out again) her hairstyle needs to be something that she could do herself.
-Edmund's hair- your classic Darcy or Bingley, but blonde. You want to give the impression that Edmund's not "in" to fashion as such, but he's aware and without slavishly following the new fads of society, he keeps abreast enough to cut a respectable figure. He's not flashy, he's just....a little more vain than perhaps he realises.
-Tom: long, slightly curling. Tied out of his face for the most part. Think Romantic Poet/Gothic hero. It might not be wholly fashionable but it suits him and it draws attention. Bonus points if he's nicked one of his father's wigs to play the rhyming butler and has that on his head when Julia runs in to tell them all that Sir Thomas has come home.
Rushworth- canonically speaking, dude's good looking. Fashionable, well cared for hair that suits his face. Brief attempt at wearing a wig that matches Sir Thomas' after their first meeting
Mary Crawford: dark, pretty, stylish. Her hairstyle should change fairly frequently- Mary tries new things, and she gets bored. The Mary of London should not wear her hair drastically differently to the Mary of Mansfield, however- the same dos, though perhaps a bit more polished or dressed with accessories, should appear in the City as the country.
Henry Crawford- Edmund's, but black. Possibly a bit floofier. Girls who are inclined toward men generally want to run their fingers through it or something idk...
Gruesome reports from Ukraine. "Children may never see their relatives again" The Russians are committing more gruesome deeds in Ukraine. According to the latest reports, subsequent groups of children are forcibly sent to Russia. - A decision was made to murder some of the Ukrainians and "de-Nazify" the rest. They will be forcibly Russified, their memory of Ukraine will be taken from them. The Russian authorities do not hide their criminal intentions, says Maria Domańska, an expert on Russia from the Center for Eastern Studies, in an interview with the Polish Armed Forces. - He really steals our future - adds another WP interlocutor Maks Grabowski, a journalist from Sigma TV, survivor of Mariupol.
Once again, we hear information about the forced deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia. As early as June, the international commission of inquiry of the UN Human Rights Council received signals about kidnappings from orphanages in the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia.
The Russians have taken 5,100 children from Ukraine to their territory since the beginning of the invasion, the Ukrainian portal Euromaidan reported. Moscow places minors in Russian families to Russify and cut them off from their loved ones. Referring to the Ukrainian ombudsman for children's rights, Daria Herasymchuk, Euromaidan pointed out that the removal of children to Russia "is a crime that must touch the world's conscience."
This is a nightmare for the Russians. The first German Cheetahs in action at the front Daria Herasymczuk, the Ukrainian spokeswoman for children's rights, emphasized that not all the children sought are orphans. The list also includes those who were deported with their parents or relatives, as well as children who were forcibly separated from their families.
Already in April, we reported in Wirtualna Polska that the Russians had announced that "orphans and children who ended up in Russia without their parents, would be adopted by Russian families under a simplified procedure and would receive Russian documents."
It means that they will be assimilated. Human rights defenders and Ukrainians oppose this, saying that they are in fact kidnappings - said Katarzyna Chawryło from the Center for Eastern Studies in an interview for WP.
On May 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree simplifying the procedure for granting Russian citizenship to Ukrainian children from orphanages.
"Forced transfer of children from one group to another is genocide" Krasnodar authorities have announced in recent days that "over 1,000 children from Mariupol have found new families in Russia". Maria Domańska, an expert on Russia from the Center for Eastern Studies, in an interview with Wirtualna Polska, emphasizes that "first, the occupiers murdered their parents and razed their hometown to the ground, then kidnapped the children to Russia and now they are trying to 'legalize' these crimes, boasting about adoptions ".
Children given to Russian families may never see their parents or relatives again. They will be forcibly Russified, their memory of Ukraine will be taken from them, he says.
And he adds that "within the meaning of the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the forced transfer of children of members of a group to another group is genocide if it is intended to destroy a nation in whole or in part." - There is a concept of cultural genocide, according to which the criterion of crime is not so much the physical extermination of members of a given group, but the destruction of the identity of this group, destroying it as a separate entity - he emphasizes.
Her brother was taken prisoner by Russia. "I would do anything to see him alive again" "Russia can play with their fate as a bargaining chip"
The Russian authorities do not hide their criminal intentions. First, for years, people refused to recognize that the Ukrainian nation was a separate entity from Russia, that it had its own culture, language and identity; editor's note). Then a decision was made, implemented from February, to murder some of the Ukrainians and "re-educate" and "de-Nazify" the rest. Sometimes the propagandists spoke directly about the need to "de-Ukrainianise Ukraine" - emphasizes the expert.
As he emphasizes, "it is worth remembering that in the occupied territories the occupiers not only commit direct terror against civilians, but also, for example, destroy library and archival resources, eliminate the Ukrainian language from schools, they destroy Ukrainian monuments. "
The expert emphasizes that "according to UN estimates, over 2 million Ukrainians went to Russia". It was often the only direction they could go to get away from Russian missiles. Some of them were forced to leave. These people, in the territory of the aggressor state, are hostages to the Putin regime. Russia may play with their fate as a bargaining chip in future negotiations with Ukraine, he explains.
Domańska adds that "the situation of Ukrainian refugees in Russia varies greatly depending on the region." - Human rights defenders, however, receive numerous reports about problems with the legalization of stay (only in individual cases has the refugee status been granted - editor's note). Contrary to the promises of the authorities, many families do not receive the announced financial aid and are therefore destitute. Those who are looking for a job often hear that they should apply for Russian citizenship first, she emphasizes.
"Putin steals our future" Maks Grabowski, a journalist from Sigma television, survivor of Mariupol, in an interview with Wirtualna Polska, emphasizes that "the first evidence of this began to appear as soon as the Russians entered Mariupol".
A way to reverse the signs of aging very quickly
They deported to Russia children from bomb shelters, children whose parents were killed. They separated the children from their parents. In social networks, the Russians are actively discussing this topic and are even glad that our children are exported to Russia, and not evacuated to the territory of free Ukraine, he says.
And he emphasizes that "Putin has signed a decree to simplify the acquisition of Russian citizenship for stolen children." "He's really stealing our future," he adds.
Olena Halushka, co-founder of the International Center for Ukraine's Victory, posted screenshots from the aforementioned Russian entries on Twitter.
She wrote: "The Russians are proud to have kidnapped 1,300 children from Mariupol, 1,000 of whom are already housed in families throughout the terrorist state. The entire second paragraph of the news is devoted to financial bonuses for families who 'adopt' children (…)".
As a high school student turned supernatural being, Elena goes through a major style transformation throughout the course of the show’s eight seasons. From her preppy and polished outfits in the earlier seasons to her edgier and more adventurous ensembles later on, Elena’s fashion sense evolved along with her character development. "I hate that Harry is part of this gossip-reality-trash-tv-soap-opera" but he agreed to it i know this is more complicated than this but you all acting like he is some innocent little baby he is not stupid he knows exactly what he's doing and what he is agreeing to he wants to be a global star and he does what everyone in hollywood does unfortunately drama sells.
None of what I said implied that I think Harry’s a baby or stupid? Harry is a grown up professional artist who succeeds even though he’s secretly gay, even though accomplishments like his don’t usually happen to people like him, because his closet and the image created for him when he was just a kid is still fucking shite no matter how much Harry has taken control over his career, no matter if 12 years in the business gave him a poker face even Howard Stern can’t get behind, even though he manages to keep his private life private, he’s learned early on that the het promiscuous Harry™️ sells best, learned to protect his heart and soul because he’s got a partner who is stuck in the same image shithole and will always understand Harry and not be jealous or give him a hard time, because they’ve both been fauxmancing and doing a lot worse to cover up their sexuality, their relationship, their actual private identities since they were teenagers, to be somehow appealing to tabloid audiences and industry bosses that will drop you like a hot potato the second you don’t play their game. It still fucking sucks, man! And I hate it! I hate that he’s being ridiculed in the tabloids and everything else that comes with it.
Why is it so important to point out that Harry is indeed an adult, fully responsible and no victim? Just because he excels playing by the rules the industry forced upon him? Because he’s found ways to navigate his closet and is currently achieving all his goals nonetheless? So now people should hold him accountable for stunting? We should blame him for participating in Holivia because he agreed as if that was all he ever wanted? Dreaming of creative integrity, freedom of expression and then stunting? When taking on the role for a closeted gay man, wearing a dress and nail polish, raising a pride flag every night and swaying his hips seductively like a woman would, do you think he also happily high fived his management and went “Yayyy I can do all that now - find me a woman to play het tabloid fodder and be called toy boy, home wrecker, cheater, unprofessional… and piss off my fans along the way. This will be so much fun”?
He pays a huge price for his freedom, for the protection of his private life and it’s above all something everyone does in the business (closeted or not). Dating co stars just works perfectly. Harry may not be a baby anymore and he agreed to the stunt for all the reasons above, but he still deserves compassion and support.
Sokka didn't know where he went wrong.
 In the blink of an eye, the life that he had built within the towering stone walls of the safest city in the world had been shattered like the crystal goblet that had fallen so suddenly from Chief Arnook's fingertips. The sweet amber liquid of the Fire Honey wine splashed the polished white stones beneath their feet. Princess Yue's graceful figure drooped sluggishly like a crumbled doll as her body lay sprawled over the overstuffed arm of the chaise lounge.
And just like that, the life Sokka knew was gone. Framed for a murder he didn't commit and imprisoned by the very same people he once considered to be his allies, he must fight for his freedom to clear his name. Forging unlikely friendships and relationships along the way. Including one with a certain masked Master Thief in the hope of bringing the actual criminals to justice.
