The Wind & The Lion (1975)
1870′s-1900′s American History Film Series
Tumblr media
Before the war on terror, the world wars, and America as a primary leader in hegemonic empire there was the Perdicaris Affair. The story of an American kidnapped for political ransom in reaction to foreign powers occupying Morocco and betraying the sovereignty of the country. The man portrayed as a noble man is named the Rasuli, someone who was later admired by Theodore Rosevelt. What we can learn from this situation that seems to be part of the back drop as the global powers inched into World War I is that jihad has at some points in history been understood by the right wing. The story is portrayed well in the movie The Wind and The Lion as an American captive Perdicaris understands the JIhad, due to either a respect of the proud Morocco Jihad-nationalist or because she understands the duty of citizens to stand up for their country. At the end of the movie Roosevelt and Rasuli know they are the same because they want to do the best for their countries but it was Rosevelt who was a colonizer and not suppose to be in Morocco.
Roosevelt reads a letter he received from Raisuli, comparing the two men: "I (Raisuli), like the lion, must remain in my place, while you, like the wind, will never know yours".
One of the most powerful aspects of the film is it seems to have a humanizing way to understand the Jihad, those who are protecting their land from early invaders during occupation by the legations of Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, the United States, etc. In showing how colonialism has in a sense caused reaction by nationalists to react in ways we describe terrorism when in fact we have for almost centuries been one of the largest global terrorists starting around this time. As viewers it may then be interested to think about the scene where advisors to President Rosevelt are joking about the assassination of William McKinley, since he has killed by an anarchist or someone who also did not want America intervening with the western colonial powers in nations like Morocco. Rosevelt who replaced McKinley would not learn a lesson from his predecessor nor his political adversaries such as Eugene Debs or William Jennings Bryant. Rosevelt went on to support and help organize the Panama Nationalists to overthrow the government with his “Big Stick” diplomacy often referenced in the movie, which shows up when he sends increasingly larger groups of Navy ships to Morocco. During the colonial intervention in Panama the US did pay for lease of their land to build the canal but also forced them into a similar client state relationship with US empire. This became a model for the US as countries in this whole region became colonized first by US military power for years and/or decades between countries like Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, etc. all for the purpose of expanding US extractive business practices. As America had colonized west into the America’s it now had started to join the global colonizing with the other western powers, creating rising political tensions as almost 90% of the world was controlled by countries that would later enter world war I. The story of the Wind and The Lion becomes the tragedy of the wind as many lives are taken by disease, new machine warfare, and mustard gas. After the colonial nations had turned against the now weakened and subverted non-industrialized countries they could only continue their greed by turning against each other.

Introduction
Hi!! For my first post on this account, I’ll summarize what I intend to do with this blog. I aspire to be a lawyer (currently working towards my paralegal degree), and I want to get a stronger grasp on writing. Furthermore, I also love educating others. The purpose of this blog is to write about current events (mainly political, but it could be anything) that many people don't understand to make them more comprehensible, and educate people more on current issues. After all, it’s smarter to form a strong opinion on a certain topic only when you have all of the information, right? I’m here to give you the information you need so you can make informed opinions! Please ask me about a current event you’d like to learn more about :)
Thank you for reading!!- L.M.

Fuck the Tories.
If you vote Conservative on the 12th of December, we're not friends.
This isn't some overdramatic tantrum, this is because whether you believe it or not politics and government effect us all every day. Your A&E visit when your stomach wouldn’t stop hurting, your uni fees, your loans, your inability to buy a house because the prices are ridiculous, your disabled friends who never seem to have the money to socialise, your friend who drunkenly confessed to getting an abortion underage, your schoolmates who moved to the UK at 1 or 5 or 6 and will have to fight for their right to be here - this is politics. This is not a coincidence.
This is because Tories raised uni fees to £9250, and even if people get the maximum student loan on top of that, most of them can't afford to rent, eat, and travel at university without further help - never mind socialising or travelling. This is because I should be able to pursue a higher education regardless of my parents income. This is because despite the raises, academic staff have been striking for years for improved pay.
This is because Tories have systematically underfunded the NHS, reducing staff, increasing waiting times - and now we find out they're going to jack up prescription prices and sell it off to the US. This is because after an antidepressant overdose, it took someone close to me 11 hours to see a doctor - imagine how much longer it would have been with a priority waiting room. This is because my dad, my grandmother, my friends, my aunts - they all take prescriptions to keep their bodies working, and that monthly price just keeps going up, and how is staying alive really something you can justify charging money for.
This is because David Clapson died starving, from a completely treatable disease. This is because no one deserves that inhumanity. This is because benefits are not some scam to let people live lavishly for nothing at the expense of hardworking people - it is a system to allow the disadvantaged to survive. It is a privilege to live in a country where a decent welfare system is possible.
This is because the Tories have proven, time and time again, they are liars. Their speeches, their media presence, their election campaign - don’t believe a word of it.
This is because we deserve another referendum, this is because the Tories have well and truly fucked up Brexit, this is because the ordering fish analogy went viral for a reason, this is because the Leave campaign was originally based on - shockingly - more lies. This is because I have heard so many people tell me they have changed their minds since voting Leave. This is because since Brexit will inevitably affect 16 year olds more than 80 year olds, their votes should have mattered - and now that it’s been three years, they can.
This is because I would love to vote Green, I understand the appeal of the Lib Dems, but we use a First-Past-The-Post system and tactical voting is not only possible, it’s necessary. It is Johnson or Corbyn for PM, whether you want to believe that or not.
This is because I don’t understand how anyone can support Johnson. A man who called gay men ‘tank-topped bum boys’, compared Muslim women to letterboxes, and referred to black people ‘picaninnies with watermelon smiles’, and so many more awful, offensive, bigoted things. This is racism, this is homophobia, this does not depend on context, this is not up for debate.
This is because if a Labour MP refused to look at a photo of his impact on the NHS and took a reporters phone, if they hid in a fridge (!!!), if they adopted a childlike, bumbling persona to appear likeable, if they pretended to be your friend rather than a professional politician, if they went by a nickname or a first name, hell, even if they had his fucking hair - they would be ridiculed. Just look what happened to Dianne Abbott when she dared drink a G&T on a train.
This is because the Tory manifesto includes  a threat to upturn the rule of law just because they fancy it. This is because Tories are funded by billionaires and tycoons. This is because they have increased our national debt by close to £1 trillion - after promising they wouldn’t.
I know there’s an antisemitism problem in Labour, I do. It’s horrible, and its inexcusable. Corbyn has apologised and the matter has been addressed, but it’s far from fixed. I know you might hate him, I know you might think he’s too idealistic or too old or too common. But this election is bigger than Corbyn, it’s bigger than Johnson, or you, or me, or Brexit. It decides where our country goes from here, it decides whether we keep the NHS, whether we ensure a democratic mandate for Brexit, whether we care about the disadvantaged, the minorities, whether LGBTQ+ and BAME are more than just acronyms to us, whether our children will be able to afford homes, or university, or children of their own.
We’ve all heard most of this before - but that doesn’t mean it’s not important. If there was an election worth begging for, it’s this one. Vote tactically tomorrow. Support Labour. And for the love of God, get the fucking Tories out.

| GEORGE ORWELL Born Eric Arthur Blair, George Orwell is most known today for his dystopian classics, Animal Farm (published in 1945) and 1984 (1949). Sadly, he died the year after in 1950. He made his first poem at the age of four and at 11, he wrote a poem that was published in their local newspaper. He went to India (where he was born) to join the India Imperial Police Force in his later years but eventually left and pursued his writing until his death. This is a part of his essay "Why I Write" published in 1946: "What I have most wanted to do throughout the past ten years is to make political writing into an art. My starting point is always a feeling of partisanship, a sense of injustice. When I sit down to write a book, I do not say to myself, ‘I am going to produce a work of art’. I write it because there is some lie that I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention, and my initial concern is to get a hearing." | #GeorgeOrwell #learnenglish #literature #AnimalFarm #1984 #dystopia #english #bookworm #bibliophile #classicnovels #politicalwriting #art

ok but
"read all about it" thinking about PoliticalWriter Alastair
"You've got the words to change a nation
But you're biting your tongue
You've spent a life time stuck in silence
Afraid you'll say something wrong (...)"
"You've got a heart as loud as lions
So why let your voice be tamed?"
"I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers"
just saying
I listened to it
This is one of those songs that make me see pictures BUT I CAN SEE POLITICAL WRITER AU PICTURES
MOSTLY THE FIRST PART BEING HIM AND GIDEON
THE SECOND HIM AND FOUND FAMILY AND THE REST AND JUST HIM MAKING THE CHANGE HE WANTED WHEN HE STARTED
AND THEN JUST HIM
OBSESSIVELY WRITTING WITH EVERYTHING HE HAS
AND THE LAST VERSE
IS ALEC FINDING HIS PAPERS
NAH THANKS ANA IM EMOTIONAL NOW

Non-Fiction November
I am excited to take part in Nonfiction November this year. It is a month dedicated to reading nonfiction. I found myself picking up nonfiction throughout the year, but for some reason I didn’t read any of them until the end. November will be a month that I set aside to concentrate on nonfiction, even though I am sure I will read some fiction.
Here are the books and the prompts they satisfy, plus a couple of extra titles.
1. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot - Time
2. Nijinsky by Lucy Moore - Movement
3. The Opium War by Julia Lovell - Buzz
4. An Astronaut’s Guide to Life by Chris Hadfield - Discovery
5. The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama
6. The World Is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman
