Confession Under Fire During a dangerous raid, emotions boil over in a moment of vulnerability. We have to… because we deserve to live in the world we’re building together." Character C: "And that world is going to have space for all of this—our love, our future. I promise."

Jealousy in a Broken World After a misunderstanding, tension arises between partners. Character A: "I never thought I’d feel jealous, not with everything we’ve built." Character B: "This world is already tearing at us from the outside. We can’t let it tear us apart from within." Character C: "We love each other in different ways, but that doesn’t make any of it less real. We’re stronger because we’re together."

Waking Up to a New Reality They wake up after a long night in the safety of their shelter, surrounded by their partners. Character A: "Sometimes I forget the world is gone when I’m with you two." Character B: "The world outside may be dead, but here… here we’re alive." Character C: "And we’ll keep each other alive for as long as we can. We’re all we need."

Facing the Future Together They discuss rebuilding civilization as a group. Character A: "What if we could rebuild something? Not like before, but better. A world where we don’t have to hide who we are." Character B: "A world where love is boundless, like ours. Where we can make our own rules." Character C: "Then let’s make that world. One step at a time. As long as we’re together, I believe we can."

The Last Night on Earth They spend a quiet night in a moment of peace, knowing tomorrow may be their last. Character A: "If tomorrow’s the end, I’m glad I get to spend tonight with the people I love." Character B: "There’s no one else I’d rather face the end with." Character C: "Let’s make tonight count. If this is the last time, I want it to be filled with love, not fear."

New Bonds A new survivor is added to their group, and feelings develop. Character A: "I didn’t expect this… to care about someone new when I’m already so full of love for both of you." Ok rambling time!

So it’s set in a that was similar to the modern day, but after in a post-apocalyptic world (recent enough that they both would’ve known the world before). Not a zombie apocalypse or anything, though. There may be Foes but probably not.

I’m not exactly sure what the apocalypse that happened actually is yet, but it’s left the world an ash-covered wasteland with few ruins and even fewer survivors (survivors being organisms in general, not just humans). I want the landscape to be kind of surreal and bizarre, but I haven’t decided if that’s because of the apocalypse or not. Maybe it was just Like That lol.

Anyway, one thing you may want to know more about, is why the hell is Jimmy a giant bird? And the answer is: I like giant birds. In all seriousness though, he’s cursed! Don’t know why. He was a normal ass dude. Now he’s a bird.

Tango might also be cursed? Depends on how edgy I end up wanting this to be lol. He might be an undead wraith or something who knows.

Hiya, what is the broken earth trilogy about? I love book recs and I love dragon age but maybe you could give like a brief summary or something? I hope this doesn't come across as rude, English is not my first language

sure yeah I'm sure that once I give a synopsis it'll be really clear why I'm recommending it to Dragon Age fans lmao. it's very much playing in a similar fantasy space but like, the worldbuilding is phenomenal and the characters, idk, *clenches fist* they compel me

so the Broken Earth trilogy is set in a post-apocalyptic world known as the Stillness that is routinely visited every few centuries by world-shattering apocalypse events that kill off major swaths of the population. they can only be braced for and waited out, not averted. due to constant earthquake activity, humanity has been reduced to living in small, isolated, self-sustaining communities, with the exception of the luxurious city of Yumenes, which houses the continent's orogene population

orogenes are mages, able to harness and control the energy welling up from within the earth. they are taken from all over the Stillness to live and be trained in the Fulcrum, under the watchful eyes of the Guardians. if they aren't trained, they'd be nothing but a danger to themselves and to others, you see, and their communities might kill them first out of self defense. but without orogenes, society in the Stillness might collapse entirely

the series follows the lives of a number of orogenes as they are pushed to their breaking point and have to fight for survival in a hostile world. it's very concerned with how one creates and exploits a class of non-people, intergenerational trauma passed down from parent to child, and what might drive one to want to destroy the world and everyone living on it

there's also—because I know my audience—bisexual polyamory

I'll put content warnings for child abuse and sexual coercion and assault (this includes csa and child death) under the cut

content warnings apply mainly to the first book in the series. the following books don't touch on these things as heavily.

so the Fulcrum orogenes are enslaved persons, and are coerced by the Fulcrum into having sex with specific other orogenes for the purposes of breeding more orogenes. refusal to go along with this mandate can essentially blackball them from advancement within the Fulcrum and see them moved to undesirable postings, at best. one main character, Alabaster, has fathered multiple children against his will, and he and one of the viewpoint characters, Syenite, have some terrible unwanted (on-screen, but brief) sex that both were coerced into.

the main chapter which deals with this is The Fifth Season - chapter 4 - Syenite, cut and polished

the series deals with very heavy themes, and neglect, violence, and death is simply a reality of life for children who are discovered to be orogenes, particularly at the hands of their family and other guardians. I'll list the most notable occurrences below

one of the more graphic moments of on-screen violence against a child occurs when Damaya has her hand broken, by a character who has positioned himself as her guardian, as a lesson in self-control. this level of violence is standard against orogene children taken to the Fulcrum.

child abuse, sexual assault, and death -

it's revealed that a number of young orogene children are lobotomized, kept alive by doctors, and treated not as people but as earthquake-dampening machines operating on instinct. it's also mentioned that it's not uncommon for these children to be sexually abused. you see the aftermath of one of these abused children lashing out in self-defense, killing themself and those nearby.

the main chapter in question is The Fifth Season - chapter 8 - Syenite on the highroad

child death -

there are two major deaths of child characters, one of which occurred immediately before the start of the story as the story's catalyst, and one of which occurs toward the end of the first book.

Ok ok it's really easy to forget but like

Brandy has had more than enough time to figure it out

They did not, in fact, figure it out later.

I think unfortunately when you start an open or poly relationship, this something you have to, i guess not expect, but be prepared for. As a firm non-monogamist myself, it's sort of just, predictable.

I think brandy being a non-monogamist as well should more than understand minty wanting another partner, regarless of if it was the right thing to do, it's not as if brandy is simply frustrated that he doesn't get why minty would do it, he's only angry because minty did it in secret. That's just not feelings that should lead to a firm jaw punch under normal conditions.

I feel like this is something you only see the full picture of if you can understand polyamory in the first place, like you have to understand why a person would be ok with it in the first place, to understand that it's kind of strange to not be ok with it to this extent.

It's just way too much anger for the situation and he doesn't handle it well.

Brandy is honestly a lot more emotional than minty is, he just shows it through actions. All things considered, I'm surprised minty didn't have this sort of outburst when brandy broke his hand. I'm a forgiving person, but even I would have said some not-so-calm words after the fact.

Everything minty has done SINCE the apocalypse started, has been very agreeable, even this outburst makes sense when you consider minty's feelings, he's done a damn decent job with sugarcube, saved brandy, kept cooler than any other character upon first seeing an assimilated, and did generally well during egstrom, but brandy refuses to agknowledge any of that because of something he did and regretted a year ago. So when he brought up something even LONGER ago, something he thought he was forgiven for...

Cheating in a closed (notably open previously) relationship over a year ago isn't comparable to a broken hand AND a broken jaw, both within a few weeks, both within earshot of their kid.

Minty has been trying to reconnect after cheating, and brandy has physically injured him over it. Theres no other way to slice it.

(note: this description will probably not make sense without the knowledge that these two are the parents of a beloved homebrew ttrpg character who lives in a post-apocalyptic alternate earth.)

a bit about these two:

in the starreachers, polyamory is very encouraged, and let's just say these two are quite coveted in that sense, lol. they're in their 40s, which this picrew doesn't demonstrate very well, but i like using it because it's very simplistic, so when i eventually draw them, i can add the detailed features myself. shiloh, their daughter, has lots of parental figures.

notably, i think their three most recurring and relevant partners were a very small incandescent woman named ophelia, a nonbinary catfolk named leto, and a bashful carcinian named mipp.

around the time the apocalypse hit, both of their groups of ancestors were in venezuela, and eventually migrated to the area of the glowing city (hence why they actually survived the apocalypse).

fernándo's side is largely venezuelan, colombian, and panamanian. mária's side is largely venezuelan and méxican american (half of her family lived in the california area a few hundred years ago). random, but her grandmother is black. that's all i've thought up in that area.

on the outside, fernándo seems pretty chill. but if you were to ask him what's on his mind, he would proceed to ramble excessively about his various anxieties. his wife is the only one who can calm his worries and help him relax. he's very devoted to his work.

mária has a very strong personality. she's very outwardly affectionate and emotional, especially in regards to her daughter. she's always fawning over shiloh and pestering her with love. mária is an excellent organizer and has a kind but commanding presence, a presence that has made her an asset to the starreachers, especially socially.

while neither of them have an official high-ranking position, they are loved.

THE MOTEL ROOM just outside Springfield University was stifling with the tense, angry silence that practically vibrated between its occupants. The first of them was pacing irritably in front of the windows, pausing every so often to glance up and either glare furiously at one of the other occupants or cast furtively worried looks at the third. The object of his ire lounged across the bed furthest from the windows with his legs crossed, a large red lollipop periodically vanishing into his mouth and reappearing a few seconds later, all with a very carefully contrived expression of unconcern even as he avoided looking at either of the other two. The third occupant of the room sat at the tiny motel table with his laptop, shoulders tense and set, face expressionless as he typed or clicked, paging through paragraphs of information almost faster than they could load in a valiant effort to avoid looking at or even acknowledging the man who kept pacing.

A knock on the door drew the attention of two out of three sets of eyes, and then Dean Winchester scrambled to get the door open. "Bobby! Thank fuck you're here, man!"

"Good to see you, too," Bobby Singer replied dubiously as he gave Dean a concerned once-over. "You said it was an emergency, but you don't look hurt. Where's Sam?"

"Over here, Bobby," Sam Winchester called from the computer, not looking up from the screen even as he waved. "And it's not actually an emergency, no matter what Dean thinks. He just doesn't like what I told him and thinks you'll give him a different answer."

"Won't know until you tell me what's going on," Bobby pointed out as he stepped fully into the room, finally spotting the third occupant on the bed. "And who's this?"

"Part of the problem," Dean growled, glaring at the figure who flipped him off without looking.

"Dean," Sam scolded, a wealth of exasperation in his tone. Finally looking up from his computer, the younger Winchester brother gave Bobby an apologetic smile that looked more like a grimace. "It's complicated, but not a problem, or at least it doesn't have to be. Bobby Singer, meet Loki, Norse god of mischief and fire, patron of tricksters and pranksters... and my soulmate."

There was a moment of silence. Bobby surveyed the faces of all three individuals in the room, from Dean's scowling face and disbelieving eyeroll to Sam's strained projection of calm over acute distress mingled with grim certainty, to the third man who apparently wasn't even actually a human man but a god and was looking at Sam now with surprise and a certain amount of his own uncertainty. Like he hadn't expected Sam to say that and didn't quite know what to make of him. Bobby heaved a sigh.

"I'm gonna need a drink for this one," he informed the three of them.

Dean went and got out a bottle of whiskey.
