Tagged by the lovely @mushiemellows to post four characters that make me say "my man, my man, my man." Hehe.

Quincey Morris. THE Gothic horror cowboy ever - not that there are too many Gothic horror cowboys, which must be because most filmmakers can't handle his sheer power and don't include him in the movie adaptations of Dracula (and the adaptations that do include him don't do him much justice, though they get a cookie from me for trying). Brave, compassionate, a "rough fellow" and a "gallant gentleman" at the same time. Tells a girl who rejected him he'll be okay with just remaining her friend and then actually proves himself a great friend, wow. Would totally die for his friends, would totally speak exaggerated Texan slang just to make Lucy smile. Super hot and ~manly~ according to Jack "Bisexual Disaster" Seward and pretty much everyone else. There's a post of mine gushing about him in the Dracula Daily book, which is a tiny bit embarrassing, because I've made plenty of much smarter posts about this novel, but you know what, that tracks.

2. Porthos from BBC's The Musketeers specifically. I'm kind of a fake Three Musketeers fan, because I've read the novels and enjoyed them a lot, but when it comes to the main characters, I highly prefer them in this historically inaccurate, book-inaccurate show. The original musketeers are much more complex as characters, but they're also quite shitty as people, and while I appreciate their complexity, their significantly-less-shitty working-class versions (or rather, three working-class ones and Athos the class traitor) are dearer to my heart. And Porthos, well, damn. BBC really knew what they were doing when they took Howard Charles - a very attractive man per se - and gave him leather clothes and those puffy shirts and a pirate-y bandana and an earring and a cool scar. Porthos is actually my favourite musketeer in the books as well, but the one from the show completely won my heart with his loyalty, kindness, and commitment to justice. And with being hella charming, too 👀

3. The currently inevitable One Piece part of the list! Look, I'm a simple woman, I'm not immune to gruff but secretly kind men who are built like a brick shithouse (and buy ice cream for random kids, and tell their corrupt superiors to eat shit). So I would let Smoker do unspeakable things to me. Who said that.

4. Caleb Brewster from Turn: Washington's Spies is one of those cases when I laid my eyes on a character and immediately thought "I guess this one's gonna be my favourite" and was absolutely right. To quote another character from the show, "he's unshaven, he's insane". Also loyal to a fault and extremely funny and reckless to the point of piloting an 18th century submarine. An absolute madlad. Every time there's some kind of a "who's hotter" poll in that fandom, I end up convinced that people understand nothing. But then again, most people probably were either Legolas girls or Aragorn girls, and I've been a Gimli girl since the age of nine.

Can I just take a moment to say 1) how fun Porthos was to draw (my favourite of the four, I’ll say) and 2) how bloody brilliantly he’s played?

I’d never really noticed it before, and it’s probably the earring and scars, but I get a vaguely piratical feeling from his costume. It was only recently that I heard the legend that sailors would wear earrings to ensure they’d have the money to cover a burial if they died far from home. With seemingly more lives than a cat I reckon there could have been the same thought behind Porthos’.

How does Porthos manage to look like a hot pirate the whole time?

Porthos is such a combat pragmatist and I love that about his fighting style. He's got lots of different weapons on him but he uses them to cut through to a victory. Sword cutting knife with three blades, pistol with a blade that can flip out of it, crossbow - he can be a show off outside the battlefield but when it comes to a fight? He's more likely to just... cut a rope to send his opponent crashing through a trap door than waste his time.

This does briefly backfire on him when he grabs the branding iron in the dungeon and it just pisses off his attacker (not that he doesn't immediately accidentally weaponize a spike wall so he's fine). But overall I get why he's the one out of the main three Musketeers who has a reputation a.) for being a pirate and b.) being someone people would rather jump off a boat than fight.

A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 018 - Big Eared Pirates

Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 1 Episode 19 - Acquisition

I mentioned it a couple days ago, but I do love the intro song. The visuals of technological advancement throughout history just get me so hyped for some space exploration and pioneership.

Today's episode started with a new big-eared kind of alien docking with the Enterprise. As they board, everyone appears to be completely unconscious, without signs of much of a struggle, as if they all collapsed all at once.

Seeing our ship be the one under the strange mysterious disaster, while someone else investigates is certainly an interesting reversal, even if I can't understand a word the investigators are saying. My hopes however, were suddenly dashed when the captain of the investigator's ship held up a whip. Everything I needed to know was instantly visually communicated. To be honest, I immediately thought slavers at that, but they appear to primarily Pirates or Salvagers. They mention slave markets, but only when they don't find the cargo they want. Which is also cool, Space Pirates are always cool.

Fortunately, Trip managed to stay awake, as he was in de-con at the time. So, the start of the episode mostly revolves around trip in his underwear (a sight I'm definitely not complaining about) trying to figure out what happened while these aliens are raiding the enterprise

These pirates are after non-existent cargo, and seeing Archer false-negotiate with them to split their group was fun.

The space-pirates being a tight knit family band but also hard-line capitalists kinda reminded me of the Slitheen from Doctor Who, but these guys certainly portrayed that idea much more interestingly, and definitely made the family unit side of things feel a lot more relevant.

I do hope we see more of these pirates in the future, they were really good comic relief. T'pol moving their loot to get the three pirates to turn on eachother was great.

This episode was a lot of fun. T'Pol, Archer and Trips mind games with the pirates throughout was a good laugh. Also Porthos being reunited with archer after being locked in a box all episode was cute as fuck. I loved this one

The Founding of the Royal Musketeers

In the Magic Kingdom, being a member of the Royalty comes with significant occupational hazards, between unscrupulous magic-users, scheming advisors, and the occasional treacherous family member. The princes and princesses have long recognized the need for bodyguards, and for many years that role was filled by the Royal Guards.

The Royal Guards were an order of men-at-arms who filled this role. Armed in medieval armor and carrying medieval weapons, the Guards were a pool of trained bodyguards who, at any moment, could be summoned by any member of the Royalty to defend their persons. They also did police work, crowd control, etc. in the areas surrounding Royal residences. At one point, Chris’s friend André Caron (one of the other main characters of Swashbucklers of the Magic Kingdom) was a member of this unit. Due to the nature of the job, many Guards were honored with the prestigious title of Knight of the Magic Kingdom.

That is, until Tristan L’Hermite took over.

Tristan L’Hermite, the Black Knight, was named Captain of the Royal Guards by Minister of Justice Claude Frollo, and quickly turned the Royal Guards into the officer corps of his own personal army, which he used to terrorize first the nobility he had sworn to protect, and then the common people of the Magic Kingdom. As his Reign of Terror began, the Royalty of the Magic Kingdom began looking to replace the Royal Guards with a new unit.

Chris Carnovo the tyrannosaur was a former privateer, a fencing master, and a fight choreographer who was unmatched in his skill with a rapier. As the Reign of Terror began, he began to fulfill the role of bodyguard for King Mufasa of the Pridelands, his chief client and benefactor, and it was he who came up with the idea of an elite unit of swordsmen, trained by him, to bodyguard the Royalty threatened by Tristan L’Hermite.

The first swashbuckler to answer his call was an old shipmate, “Porthos the Pirate,” whose real name was Isaac Porthos du Vallon, but others soon followed—Armand Athos, the Count of La Fère; René Henri Aramis D’Herblay; Count Rochefort, who later betrayed the Musketeers and left to captain the guards of Cardinal-Duke Richelieu; and the man who would become his right hand amongst the Musketeers: Bertrand de Batz D’Artagnan. Chris soon assemble a large corps of noble-hearted swashbucklers and trained them in the art of rapier. As a uniform, Chris decided on a short blue tunic or cape with silver crosses, although he himself chose one of the rejected designs as his own uniform. For headquarters, a large mansion belonging to one King Henri IV (a cousin of Cinderella’s father-in-law) was gifted to them, and so King Henri became a special patron of the Musketeers. For this service, Princess Cinderella elevated him to the ranks of the aristocracy, bestowing on him the title of Count of Tréville, by which title his is most often referred by the Musketeers.

The Musketeers’ record was impeccable, and no prince or princess was ever captured by Tristan L’Hermite on their watch. By the end of the Reign of Terror, the Musketeers made up more than half of the able-bodied defenders at the Seige of Pride Rock, their captain Chris Carnovo leading the defense himself until Mufasa, liberated from the Palace of Justice by André, arrived with reinforcements to put an end to the Reign of Terror.

Chris lead the Musketeers ably for some time after the Terror, but eventually decided to retire from full-time Musketeering. Such was the Musketeers’ love for their commander, however, that they begged him to stay in some capacity. Chris eventually accepted the title of Commander Emeritus, leaving the the day-to-day running of the Musketeers to a Captain, while being in charge of training new recruits in the art of swordsmanship.

Commander Emeritus is not, however, an empty title—the acting Captain has more than once turned to the Count of Tréville for advice and, when he is present, the Musketeers naturally acknowledge him as the Captain’s superior, even siding with their beloved M. Tréville when his and the Captain’s views conflict. In a few emergencies, Chris has taken back active control of the Musketeers, but then returned command over to a capable Captain.

At the time of Swashbucklers of the Magic Kingdom, the Captain of the Musketeers is Bertrand’s son, Charles de Batz D’Artagnan, most famous for foiling an attempt to kidnap King Henri’s son and successor, Louis XIII, before ever donning the blue tunic. Early in the story, Chris Carnovo must take Prince Kopa of the Pridelands along as he supervises a fencing tournament held by the Musketeers. But when the Cardinal’s Guards attempt to disrupt the tournament, the Count of Tréville knows that the first duty of a Musketeer is to protect their charge—and Kopa may be in more danger than getting caught in the crossfire…
