My Top 15 Kpop Songs of the Year

1. Love Dive- Ive- Like give IVE their tens this was song of the year, mayhaps even song of the decade (getting ahead of myself). The vibes were immaculate and the song is outstanding I even like the dance break which can break a good song if done poorly. 

2. Hype Boy- New Jeans: Like this is really also the song of the year for me, Love Dive triumphs but probably only because it came out earlier. Like this song is immaculate and attention is pretty good too it would be in the 16-20 range of my fave songs of the year.

3. Catch the Star- Woo!ah- They really outdid themselves like this was a masterpiece and such a great way to start the year. I really didn’t think it could be beat for a while and at one point it was higher than Love Dive but its not as replayable as Love Dive. Still a bop tho!

4. DM- Fromis_9- Again the girls were taking no prisoners' at the beginning of the year jan-feb was insane like this is probably my fave fromis_9 song after love bomb of course.

5. Talk that Talk- Twice- Of course the queens had to be here and for their only comeback of the year. Truly I couldn’t have wished for anything more (except a more coherent MV), like the song is good and repayable. They never disappoint and this comeback as well as celebrate was made just so much better by all the members continuing on and re-signing their contract!

6. Smiley- Choi Yena- Another early bop, like it’s so catchy it’s still in my head! Truly a great debut but that’s to be expected from the izone girlies. The only critique is Bibi was so not needed, like it wasn’t bad but Yena defs could cover that part herself and I’m not crazy about a feature being on a debut. And we must thank Yena for holding down yuehua entertainment until everglow come back.

7. Love in Bloom- ILY:1- They are bringing back christian kpop and I have to thank them for it! This song is so refreshing and unique and a bop. The MV and styling were cute and I replayed it so much it just had to make the list. A very solid nugu debut.

8. Run- H1-key- This was the song of the summer for me. It just screams a fun summer like I was a little unsure of the group what with their former members alleged political connections and their debut song but this was spectacular. 

9. Antifragile- Lesserafim- This is probably my most replayed song of the year which is crazy because it literally came out a few months ago lol. Like this is such a good song to workout to they really served. I was worried what they would do post garam kick out and with the success of new jeans it was looking a bit grim for them but they came back swinging. Also their performances are so good and Yunjin I find genuinely funny which is rare in an idol, like they’ve been added to my faves list.

10. Rollarcoaster- Woo!ah- Yep Woo!ah made the list twice and if we extended the list to 20 entries they would make it thrice. Woo!ah had a great year with a comeback at the beginning middle and end of the year all of which were really strong but starting with Catch the Stars and ending with Rollarcoaster is insane like their producer is a genius. I envision this will climb the rankings but since it came later it’s at number 10.

11. Flip That- Loona- I started writing this before the Chuu situation and the potential exodus of the Loona members and man am I bummed out now. The song is good and everything I wanted after the girl crush mess I’ve been force fed for the past two years. Like just a nice chill song for the summer, not their best but super refreshing. (BUT, everyone needs to boycott bbc and not listen on streaming sites and don’t watch their new comeback or interact with the teasers.)

12. After Like- Ive- They also made the list twice this song was a bit boring to me at first but on a second listen its an earworm. Whoever is producing these Ive tracks starship needs to pay them more cause they are excellent.

13. Loveticon- CSR- Giving Christian Kpop Horsegirl vibes as my one anon put it and we need to bring the genre back so I’m glad they’re helping. Ever since gfriend pivoted to whatever apple was the genre has been left behind and its revival and CSR and ILY:1 can do it! Weird group names tho.

14. Higher- Fifty Fifty- this group has a decent concept and I really like that they sing a majority of the chorus and songs together as opposed to in segments like it makes them unique in kpop. A nice chill jam with good vocals what more could anyone else want.

15. Pop- Bugaboo- I liked the song it was fun but this is mainly here because my girls have disbanded and its only right that they make the list for the two years they were active during.

2022 music recap (2/3?)

concepts:

this was a good year for good concepts, and i hope it improves even more next year! onlyoneof's "be" series really held it down, with the standout in my opinion going to yoojung's begin. this sounds extremely dumb but the song and the music video are at peak conceptual, thematic, tonal, sonic and lyrical harmony. like the song and mv are explicitly about beginnings, yes, but something about the song also sounds like the start of something new. they're insane for that oml. i am once again asking everyone to watch the be series start to finish once the last installment drops on january 4th. i won't be mad if you mute beat i promise but the mv is still nice.

i feel like i've been raving about lexie liu's album, the happy star, and it's rollout too much but. please watch fortuna and magician (tw death, tw flashing though, be careful!!). i can't fully explain what i liked beyond the story, but i just think the whole thing is really well done. i especially love how the ganma mv is her cleaning up one of the sets from fortuna/magician. it could just be because i love this album dearly but i even love the 3.14159 mv thats just her walking around in interesting sets (kind of a fake one shot style). idk. it makes sense to me.

love dive is my favorite gg mv of the year! i won't spend too much more time on it but yeah. it's impeccable, and i liked the vibe of the teasers too. I hope they bring that energy again for their first album, that's the quality that i'd expect for what's shaping up to be the next huge gg.

albums:

i need to post this and run away tbh, it's to the point where i'm not even fully sure that i agree with myself. i don't have the time/energy/patience/will to go through each album one by one but i would strongly recommend all of the selected songs that i put on the righthand side :)

debuts (in order by rank):

generation was a perfect debut we love to see it! a friend and i were talking about what makes the music video unique despite containing pretty conventional themes and we decided that it felt a bit more true to the "female gaze," which was great to see. i'm so excited to see where they go :)

i don't love ador as a company (that gaslighty statement is still sooooo crazy to me) so i don't really like talking about new jeans very much despite enjoying their music. i'm not sure who paid everyone to say that hype boy is their best song when attention is right there. the girls who get it get it! very solid debut mini. i hope ador is more careful with their concept in the future- ditto seems like a good start. i will be keeping an eye out for them moving forward!

tan dududu - somehow the last hope for men??? it's toooo good even if the bsides are pretty weak. dudududu isnt really a song you listen to and get hooked in my opinion, but it's an instant classic that'll never get old (in part because it takes a lot of inspiration from more classic american (read: black) rnb sounds). this group also has an older average age, which i love to see. their most recent mini, walking on the moon, was also very good, it gives got7/full8loom to me. my two wishes for them are 1.) to define their sound better and 2.) better album art.

fifty fifty's higher was like a sleeper agent and i found myself enjoying it more than anticipated at each listen. i LOVE their main vocal's tone. i need them to never ever ever do a song like log in ever ever again.

i was so impressed with yena! i wasnt an izone stan but i watched her debut on a whim and it really got me (it didn't hurt that her concept felt like the culmination of my "kpop-punk" predictions nearly two years ago at this point). her whole album is incredibly solid, and yueha did a fantastic job figuring out a unique concept that suits her. while i wasn't a fan of smartphone, i will definitely checking out her music!

throwbacks:

i won't say much here, even though it should technically be the biggest section. pado and eat my love (2021) were two of my biggest songs this year, they actually fit right in with new jeans and fifty fifty in my opinion. this year was the year i finally opened my eyes to taemin- i've always liked him, but for a few months in there criminal and advice were on repeatt. i also love the thirsty instrumental!

wayv...what to say about wayv. i'm truly hoping for the best from them but they worry me sometimes. i don't really trust their company to continue to pour into them unfortunately. but hey, at least i still have moonwalk! moonwalk is one of my favorite bg songs of all time and it's likely to stay that way for awhile :)

wickymicky’s Top Ten Kpop Songs of 2021

7: IVE - Eleven

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven... You make me feel like Eleven. lmao. Get it? Cause it’s number 7? Anyway...

Oh my god, lol. Holy shit. Where did this song come from? I was not expecting this. At all. I love Izone, they’re one of my ult groups, but Yujin and Wonyoung were never at the top of my bias list, partially due to them being the maknaes, with Wonyoung in particular just having been very young when Izone debuted. But still, nevertheless, I was interested to see what this group would be like, as they’re the first post-Izone group, and they’re under Starship, so they’re a junior group to WJSN, and many more. Those factors do put a lot of pressure and expectations on them. When they started revealing members, I saw how young the maknae is, and that definitely concerned me, and, to be honest, made me lose a bit of hype for them, because I was hesitant about the whole thing. 

But then it came out. And while I don’t really see myself stanning this group, I know an amazing song when I hear it. Seriously, where did this come from? Where did Starship get the budget for this? lmao. This is amazing. It’s one of the most exciting debuts I’ve heard since I got into kpop. idk it’s just... I don’t know where to begin.

Alright, enough wasting time, let me just list my favorite things about this song.

I love the production and mixing. I’m not very familiar with Bollywood stuff, but this is Bollywood inspired, right? I’m not knowledgeable enough to say whether or not this is appropriation or appreciation, but I will say that that guitar (or other string instrument? idk i’m sorry) sounds so clear and crisp and sharp. There’s so much going on in the song in terms of percussion, and all of it is crystal clear. This song has so much texture. It’s like... I haven’t heard a lot of kpop songs that are this immaculately produced or mixed or whatever it is. Everything, every detail, just sounds amazing. Regardless of the melody, the rhythm, anything like that, the individual sounds just sound good to listen to. Better than anything else on this list. This song is incredible. The reverb or echo on the vocals is done so well... Sorry, I’m like tripping over my words here cause I kinda don’t really know where to begin. This song is like music to my ears. lmao. The songwriting too is just... Like what I said in the Love So Sweet review, this song is also very streamlined and focused. There’s nothing extraneous. Everything works towards the goal of the song, every detail leads into the next. It flows superbly well.

I love the curveballs this song throws at you despite its relatively simple concept. That slowdown right before the chorus is a genius touch. It doesn’t just get your attention, it grabs ahold of you with both hands and violently shakes you awake before the chorus. That slowdown leaves you on the edge of your seat, and it makes the chorus so much more explosive. The first chorus ends without a second half, but in such a way that you knew one was coming. Even before you made it to the second chorus, so you didn’t know for sure that there was a postchorus segment yet, still, the ending of the first chorus surprises you and leaves you hanging. And when the postchorus does come in after the second chorus, it’s huge. It’s so lush and rich and dense and vibrant. It’s a little bit “epic” lmao, but idk... I’m kind of a sucker for stuff like that sometimes haha. And the bridge? Oh my god. 

Damn, I really don’t know what else to say. I wasn’t expecting this. This song is 7th, but honestly I was very close to putting this in the top 5. For a moment while I was finalizing my list, I had this song as high as 4th place. Right now though, I feel like 7th place is just right. It’s hard to rank a song that is less than a month old, and I don’t wanna put something here that I feel like I’ll disagree with 6 months from now when the song isn’t new anymore, but I’ve thought about this a lot and I feel confident about this placement. I’m so impressed by this song, and I didn’t expect that at all, haha. Wow, dude.

10 Izone - Fiesta) I'm not a huge izone fan but I think Fiesta is the song I like the most and I agree about them filling a niche. 

9 Gfriend - Crossroads) Crossroads definitely is an emotional song but it's really driven and pulls at your emotions. The choreography is excellent! I also love pink Eunha ✊🏾

8 Cignature - Assa) Oh I haven't thought about Assa in awhile but it's also my favorite cignature song. It's slick yet fun. I think your descriptions of the concept are spot on.

7 Dreamcatcher - BOCA) I totally agree with your first two paragraphs about BOCA being a good follow up to Scream. And tbh the 2nd installments of trilogies are notoriously weak and BOCA doesn’t fall into that but I am def excited for part 3 with Handong back

6 NCT 127 - Kick It) Kick It was definitely very NCT and very iconic. Like the level of coverage was kinda crazy (I wish like even a quarter of the amount of people had covered superhuman cuz I feel like it’s their best song) It was a great title for a great album tho

5 Cool - Weki Meki) Cool is definitely smartly written because it completely conveys the title. I really like Cool although I think I like Oopsy a little better song-wise. So I have the hipster lean of not wanting to bias the ioi members in any post ioi group and even naturally I didn’t gravitate towards dodaeng but one thing about Oopsy was that it was the first time that I was really hit with how good Doyeon’s singing is? Which is kinda weird because it’s not like she lacked lines to show it in the past but it just never really stuck out to me. But it’s not even just Doyeon, although that was the most prominent, all of their voices really stood out to me in Oopsy. Particularly Elly, Suyeon and Lucy you know how you listen to a group and your like ‘oh that’s the main vocal’ I hadn’t quite had that moment with Suyeon yet. Weki Meki has really cool song production so that’s often what I’m paying more attention to. Oopsy still has a solid instrumental but something about the way it’s written or mixed really allows me to appreciate the vocals. But lol sorry for making this about Oopsy. I am also really happy to see Lua’s confidence and the attention she’s getting. I remember when La La La came out I noticed her and was like oh yeah she’s an amazing dancer (who is also main dancer) and being confused that no one seemed to pay attention to her. But I think all eyes are on her now :)

4 Everglow - LA DI DA) Just like you said as soon as I heard this I understood the hype and knew I was also gonna like it. Which came as a surprise to me because up to this point I was not a fan of Everglow’s music. Bon Bon Chocolat to Dun Dun just wasn’t my style of music although I will say that I think they are excellently written particularly Dun Dun. I’m also a 96 baby but I love 80s music or anything inspired by it because 80s music is very often dance music and that’s my favorite kind of music. The strength and consistency of the creative direction between the visuals and audio makes LA DI DA an even stronger package. Adios and Dun Dun being “too built around the drop” I feel that. I also didn’t expect much from LA DI DA though I like it but I ended up listening to their whole mini album so much that one of the songs managed to make it to my top 100 list

3 Gfriend - MAGO) This song is light and easy to listen to because like you said the whole song flows so well. I didn’t get the chance to listen to it too much so Crossroads is still above it for me but I do really like the way they sing in this it’s like a little bit sultry? I didn’t even attempt to follow the arc from crossroads but your interpretation makes sense.

2 Weeekly - Tag Me(@Me) Tag Me came out of nowhere for me too. Youtube had recommended me some of their predebut covers but I don’t think I watched or if I did I forgot. It’s interesting that you compared it to Picky Picky because I also made a comparison between them and early Seventeen (Adore U, Mansae, Aju Nice). There’s that overbrimming youthful energy, incredibly catchy song, the fun and unique choreo. But Weeekly and Tag Me can stand on their own (and they are). I actually think I remember one of your posts about not having checked out Tag Me yet 😂 I remember thinking something like just wait til you do. But yeah every part of the song is amazing I hadn’t even thought about how impressive it is for Monday to have gotten and done that rap part so well as the groups main vocalist :o The group is so talented. And company supporting and pushing Jiyoon's composing that makes me really excited for the future too!? And on top of that they’re all really fun. Sometimes I’ll like a groups music and check out variety/behind the scenes stuff and you don’t really feel drawn to anyone but with Weeekly I immediately latched onto like all of them. I was trying to map out a bias ranking and I realized that I put Jihan 5th and I was like 5th sounds too low for how much I like Jihan. They’re all so adorable and likeable 😭 They really are a breath of fresh air.

1 Dreamcatcher - Scream)  Sceram being the most EDM-inspired but the most metal is interesting. I think the mv is also the more horror-themed than the cbs before it. You like music that is noisy and more metal but I also like non-noisy music a lot so I think that’s why the verses don’t bother me as much. It’s also something is present in other dc songs. The soft verses against a very distinct rock chorus/drop. Wow “what was kpop to me before scream”, funny story I think I was odd InSomnia out during the year because I really wasn’t sure if I like Scream of BOCA better. I saw so many people definitely having a favorite but I kept vacillating. And then after seeing them perform both songs at the concert with Handong I immediately realized that Scream is also the song I prefer 😂😂😂

I think you had a very respectable list and it was cool to here your thoughts on the songs. I’ve only just started my list 😭 but I think all of these besides Fiesta and Assa are also up for consideration for soty for me too!

This stuff came from knowing bros which for me is a place I go to when I stan a new group because it generally has a segment to get to know members more. Knowing bros, Weekly Idol, or idol room for me is the best at getting to know them

Izone

Eunbi- she actually wanted to meet Soo Geun because he was so much fun in the program but she realized that he is too cold so she changed her mind😂. Earlier she worked as a part-timer in a Paris Baguette franchise.

Sakura- she’s best friends with Kang Hodong since they’ve been on multiple shows together and she said it herself, “Hodong is my first friend I made in Korea aside from the members” and she’s also associated with Kwang Hee since they are part of Everyone’s Kitchen Together.

Hyewon- Got the nickname fairy of delivery since she can remember most of the members’ choices for food and orders because once their manager often can’t remember their specific prefences so she stepped up when their manager can’t. Even though the line changes she’s also part of the monday fairies although I think all of them are part of it since their posts on ig often include some that aren’t included in the intro of monday fairies.

Yena- She is also seen with one of the brothers. Soo Geun is Yena’s cellmate in another variety show. She also attended in Joy Dance Academy and mahored in girls hip-hop dance.

Chaeyeon- tho I don’t see it often or its just me but she’s also part of the Monday Fairies. And our Feather Chaeyeon has a talent of making choreos. And crowned on both Idol room and weekly idol as dancing queen.

Chaewon- she is also known to be associated with one of the brothers since she and Kyung Hoon have the same hairdresser. She’s also part of Izone’s monday fairies, where on their ig account every monday she will post something to motivate their fans about the start of their week being hopefully great

Minju- She was also in in 7th or 8th grade, a commercial but for childrens wear instead. She’s a potter harry fan. And she had a dream of being a stewardess in middle school. And although she’s shy she likes rollercoasters and amusements park rides.

Nako-known as the girl who ranked F to A because she’s talented like that. She believes she was a cat in her prev. life (I mean who doesn’t?) and she’s afraid of heights

Hitomi- Monday Fairy squaddd. She loves watching cooking shows in her spare time. And she is good at composing songs and very competitive. And she wants to go to Nasu (idk what is this) when she learns how to drive.

Yuri- I think I’ve mentioned it before but if I haven’t she appeared on Idol School where she was Heechul’s student. She hates bugs (same) and she used to play piano but ended up givi ng up due to financial issues.

Yujin- (this one I know I mentioned but doesn’t hurt to say it again) she was a commercial star before being a part of Izone. And she specializes in girl hip-hop and the piano. Hitomi’s dad is also a fan of her which to me is hilarious😂

Wonyoung- She was also with Hodong on Dining together. And she’s a smart bean too she got perfect marks on Korean, English, and Math. She likes spicy food and she was deemed rank 1 and center exactly on her birthday, hence the nickname, born to be center.

oh yeah i know knowing bros and weekly idol are the places to know but i just don’t like weekly idol due to certain people lmao at first i had no idea what monday fairy was until i saw more of what you said and that’s an interesting and sweet thing to do. people are usually demotivated during mondays so i can understand. these are all really interesting and honestly adorable information about the girls so thank you nonnie

wonyoung: she’s baby lol– i feel like a lot of people always forget how young she really is and how emotionally naive and vulnerable you can be at that age, so i wish the internet would be a bit kinder to her :ccc // there’s a lot of controversy around her being centre and people saying that other people suit centre more, but i think wonyoung is doing a fine job. she might not be as good as other members in singing or dancing, but i think she really has a talent in stage presence. // i think that centre wonyoung actually works to bring the team together which i appreciate - she prob relies on all the other members since she’s the youngest (and knows she’s not as experienced in singing/dancing) which, i think, lessens the focus on their rank and brings them together // i love how she loves learning! extracurriculars, instruments, languages, etc.

sakura: respect. hella popular, hella humble, extremely hardworking. to be honest i do not think she has much natural talent for dance, which means she puts a LOT of effort into practicing, and i appreciate that. // she’s been in the industry since a young age so i feel like she’d be able to help wonyo and yujin out so that’s nice to know. // huge fanbase and popularity since before pd48 but i never ever got the feeling that it influenced her ego at all—respect.

-success for loona- is a debut mini selling over 50,000 copies success? ya know there are people that will say that based on how expensive and long their debut project was that everything was a flop and loona’s doomed but i dont really think that way. when lookin at it strictly as an actual debut they did great. i love my girls.

-success for clc- we’ll never know if anything could have come from a comeback after black dress because CUUUUUBBBBEEEEEE but im not salty or anything nooooo

-success for dreamcatcher: happyface and i think the girls themselves realize that their concept will never be mainstream but ya know what? my girls had a good year! they’re working hard and building a fanbase and theres nothing more i can ask for really

17. Like A Diamond- Kang Hyewon (feat. Stella Jang

I’m so glad that she’s making music solo, I love her voice and I was worried that she would pursue an acting career post-Izone. However, I would really like it if she released something other than a ballad lol. I just don’t really like them.

16. Yet To Come- BTS

I’m looking forward to their solo work during their hiatus and I liked the message of this song a lot. However,,, I just didn’t like the song itself. Not my vibe

15. Pop!- bugAboo

A solid first comeback from them! I like their debut better though, because this song feels so flat. Every section feel the same as the others except the post chorus which is just eh anyway. I look forward to their future work!

14. Flip That- Loona

I was looking forward to Loona’s return to a bright concept so much,,, I just wish it was executed differently. The song feels so empty (in a bad way) and the b-sides don’t stand up to their previous work. Frankly I wish they’d stay with their girl crush stuff if this is what their dreamlike concept is because I also don’t like Butterfly, but I know this is an unpopular opinion. We’ll see what they do next!

13. Crazy- Wonho

Not my favorite of his songs, but still solid! He’s got a vibe and he’s sticking to it.

12. Stay This Way- Fromis_9

Fromis are doing a good job for themselves under Hybe, I’m happy for them. The song feels a little bit flat but it’s a more chill song so it works better than in other songs.

11. Ring The Alarm- Kard

I’ve been waiting for their return! I’m glad that they’re back and it seems like they’re doing even better than before the hiatus. Not an exceptional song but still a solid Kard banger.

10. Cherish- Kawaguchi Yurina

A very quick comeback from Yurina! I think I prefer Look At Me but a very sweet song nonetheless

9. Villain- Pixy

I’ve been waiting for a Pixy comeback, but unfortunately it didn’t fully live up to my expectations. I want to love it and it may grow on me in the future but as of right now, I only like it

8. Pop!- Nayeon

The first solo debut from Twice! The song fits her so well. The b sides let me down a bit but it is just her first solo project so we’ll see where she goes.

7. Circus- Stray Kids

Stray Kids’ Japanese tracks have been hit or miss for me but this was definitely a hit. I love the concept.

6. Hit Ya!- Lapillus

Another GP999 debut! And another solid girl group debut from this year. I know people didn’t like the empty chorus and instrumental second verse but I really enjoyed it, I thought it worked. I like the new trend with girl group debuts for the song to feel more like an intro than, like, an actual song. I think Le Sserafim and NMixx fall under this category too.

5. Undo- Heize

Big fan of the city pop vibe here. Heize will alway deliver great music.

4. Up!- Kep1er

I really liked the concept change! They pulled it off just as well as they did Wa Da Da. I loved the rap sections, truly my favorite parts of the song.

I hadn’t realized she was a singer when I saw her on Singles Inferno, but she’s a really good one. I hope she releases more music because this song slaps but I know she already has a different career.

oof the pd48 scandal is extremely complicated. to condense it in a few statements: all of the girls' rankings have been rigged since the very beginning and it was rumored that they already had their end group before the show even started. it was like this for pf48 and pdx101 (group x1) which was why x1 disbanded within a month of debuting, and izone were on hiatus for like 4 months. im not the best at explaining stuff like this haha, but i think you get it. you can check out yt or search up 'pd48 scandal', a ton of articles and videos. as for new groups, nothing has been made clear yet. theyve only made instagram handles for now and appeared on variety shows haha. as for acting career, hyewon was supposed to do acting but was forced to join pd48 so maybe she'll continue acting afterwards? nothing is confirmed yet!

do you know where to search for age demography stats for concert attendance? i remember seeing some info a couple years ago but nothing recent...

Yes, you’ll find it on the sites of the ticket retailers (I posted a compilation here years ago but I guess I’ve privated that post).

However, only YES24 and INTERPARK show such statistics. Other ticket retailers like AUCTION and MELON don’t. And neither does G-MARKET (I don’t think anyone uses G-market anymore, but way back Interpark and G-market were the main ticket retailers). I linked the yearly rankings on YES24 and INTERPARK, but it should be easy for you to find events by searching.

Some points to note: At most SM concerts there’s usually a special family seating section [ 해피패밀리] and tickets to that is usually sold as a “separate” event, so don’t look at the statistics for that and mistake it for the main sales... Also, you shouldn’t really look at the statistics until after an event is done, stats may change a lot from the very first bookings.

And be mindful if looking at the ranking charts... Charts are based on when tickets are sold, so ticket sales to some events will be split over two years... Also, some events are sold through multiple ticket retailers, and for some events there may be lots of tickets sold to foreign fans through other ways, etc.

But yea, as one would expect, the demographic stats for for example Taeyeon and Red Velvet are very different compared to for example Twice2019, Twice2018 and Izone.

Looking at boygroups, all “new-ish” boygroups have like 95% girls, no matter if it’s BTS, EXO, or whatever (and that’s before even considering that those ~5% men might have just bought tickets for girls). Only some “older” acts have some men in the audience.

i’m super unsure of where to place Loona, lol. i keep going back and forth and how much i like the song, it’s really polarizing among orbits, yeah, but it’s also really polarizing just for like... me haha. the good parts are so good, and i love this group so much of course... so maybe that’s why it’s so high? it definitely has grown on me, but also it’s flaws have become more apparent too. it’s complicated. idk, but it’ll get evened out over time, and so like again... take everything with a grain of salt. i’ll figure my thoughts out eventually.

also, i’m posting this after Fiesta by Izone came out, but i’m writing this right now before that lol. i’m just gonna schedule this to post in the afternoon or something. and besides, i definitely won’t be familiar enough with the song yet lol. i’m also of course posting this before dreamcatcher and weki meki which i hope are gonna shoot straight to the top of my list haha. we’ll see how things turn out!

edit: oops i forgot Paradise by Siyeon! i just added it to the list and honestly i think it’s number 9... sorry :( again tho, there’s a lot that’s not on the list at all, so that’s still not bad

comeback ranking may update

ive been doing this thing at the end of every month where i rank my favorite comebacks of the year so far, to see how new additions from the month stack up, and how my opinions of songs change as the year goes on, and i wanna do the May update before the twice comeback lol, so i guess i gotta do it rn. but for a number of reasons, i’m gonna keep this kinda simple. i dont really have the energy right now because of everything going on to write blurbs explaining my thoughts about a song and how its changed or whatever, and also tbh not much has come out in a while that really shook my list of favorites up, so i dont have a ton to say that i havent said before. oh well. anyway here’s my top 10 favorite kpop songs of 2020 so far

idk i think that’s all i got rn. i started writing this post and coming up with the list an hour or two ago, and i intended to spend a lot of time comparing songs and figuring out which ones i really like more, but then i ended up spending an hour being horrified by the videos of what happened at the protests today. i dont really feel like going into more detail about kpop songs right now. but i wanna post this cause i know i’ll wanna look back on it next month lol. anyway. hopefully by the next update though, i’ll have a lot more new additions. i’m hoping to include twice and weki meki on the list, and it’d be really sick if dia, wjsn, nature, blackpink, and more can be on it. i hope theyre all good. i’ll get to listen to twice when i wake up tomorrow, that’s at least one thing to look forward to. goodnight
