23 book I want to read in 2023

I've seen a few people do these lists, so here's mine

La Reine Margot – Alexandre Dumas

This one is a little cheating, since it’s on my TBR, but it’s not really a classic that really attracts me, especially with my last experience with a Dumas. (Sorry, when I was 12 I found D’Artagnan so dumb I couldn’t even finish the book, which just didn’t happen at that age)

The Queen’s Thief – Megan Whalen Turner

I heard so much about this serie from Booklr and it’s on Arhive.org, so I’m really excited for this one !

How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House – Cherie Jones

Trying to read books from all over the world, and this title make it very intriguing. Though the summary leads me to think it will be a very though read.

Handicap à vendre – Thibault Petit

A book about disabled’s rights in french worplaces (and the utter shit it is), mostly about Intellectual Disabled I think.

Aya de Yopougon - Marguerite Aboue & Clément Oubrerie

This is a mildly famous Comic Serie in France, and I’ve never read it so I want to finally bridge that gap.

Middlegame - Seanan McGuire

Once again a pretty popular book on booklr, and as I liked Every heart a Doorway I’m very excited for this one !

The Bomb – Alcante, Bollée & Denis Rodier

French Comic about the making of the Atomic Bomb. One again a though read, but it got praised a lot in France.

Les Indes Fourbes - Alain Ayroles & Juanjo Guarnido

Another french comic that got praised a lot. Seems interesting, but since it’s a comedy about the American Conquest, i’m a little wary about representation…. Guess I’ll read and see.

The witcher, Season of Storm – Andrzej Sapkowski

My Witcher period is a little behind me, but it’s the only book i have left to read so it’s worth the shot.

If on a winter’s night a traveler – Italo Calvino

This one get praised a lot for its narration and writing. I wiish I could read it in italian, but french will hae to do.

Quest for Fire - J.H. Rosny Aîné

Fantasy in prehistoric times ? Sign me up. (It’s very old so there’s little chance I will love it, but eh. Sometimes an okay read is all you can ask for.)

Texaco – Patrick Chamoiseau

I liked another novel by the same author, and this one won a big french award back in 1994.

Tè Mawon – Michael Roch

I’ve been meaning to read a Michael Roch’s books for years – and I SWEAR that this year is THE year I finally do ! (Once I get a job)

Iron Widow - Xiran Jay Zhao

This has been recced by everyone and their sisters (my sister at least) so I’ll try to finally read it!

Assassin’s apprentice - Robin Hobb

Never read anything by Robin Hobb. I’m a fake fantasy fan.

The City we became - N.K. Jemisin

Another book loved by a lot of people. I absolutely loved How Long 'til Black Future Month so this is a book i’m sure to love.

In mother’s land - Élisabeth Vonarburg

Once again it’s a book I’ve been meaning to read for years. It’s a SF book, where mens are scarce. and basically describing the new society. Exactly my genre of book!

Postcolonial Love Poem – Natalie Diaz

I want to try to read poetry, and this one seems good.

A doll’s house – Henrik Ibsen

It’s a norwegian play from the 19th century. It was apparently very feminist for its time, so much that it stirred a controversy way beyond the world of theatre so I’m curious to read it.

Therese and Isabelle – Violette Leduc

A lesbian autofiction. Need I say more.

Harrow the Ninth – Tamsyn Muir

I don’t care about my wallet state. I WANT to read this book and the next so much

La Horde du Contrevent – Alain Damasio

A french SF classic. I borrowed this book from my sister about two years ago, so it’s time I read it. Fun fact, this book pages are numbered down instead of up, which probably the most french thing I’ve ever seen. so edgy.

Toward the Terra - Keiko Takemiya

A SF manga drawn by a shojo artist. Looks beautiful and I hope it will be interesting to read!

Here's to hoping I will not be stuck in a reading slump for six months like last year

1)My favourite female characters: Soleil fire emblem my beloved. I've always liked her and excellent performance in my most resent conquest run has made me love her more. Azura!Soleil master Ninja goes very hard and looks very pretty. Olivia fire emblem is one of the most "She's literally me" Characters I've ever encountered. Not only do we have the same name but as a shy artist who really likes it when her art is praised I relate to her a lot. She's also very pretty. Maria "Blemishine" Nearl Arknights; younger sister solidarty. I love Maria, she has such a pretty design.

6)Aversa you deserved so much better than what Awakening gave to you. She was constantly playing second fiddle to either Validar or Gangrel. She should have been Robin's blood sister and she should have become queen after Gangrel's death. Validar should have also stayed dead after chapter 6 but that's a post I've already made.

9)Honestly I rarely start out disliking any character but when playing three houses I started out ignoring Leonie while going through verdant wind. I didn't use her and obviously didn't get any of her supports. But when I played through Azure moon I recruited her on a whim and after getting her supports I really liked her. She's easily the most likeable character in three houses even with her B support unlock time.

13)Ophelia/Soleil. I love childhood friends and even if they aren't technically childhood friends (Deeprealms my archenemies) they are childhood friends coded. They're also princess knight Yuri, role reversal princess knight Yuri no less! My beloved lesbian with blue hair and pronouns who is a princess of Valla and her silly Chuni dark mage knight (Read: pair up partner who activates Soleil's personal skill), but when they return to Ylisse Ophelia is the princess and Soleil is her knight (Pair up bot). Ough, I'm constantly thinking about them.

Pride: 25 Queer Films To Love.

Dating Amber writer and director David Freyne introduces our London correspondent Ella Kemp to 25 of his favorite LGBTQIA films.

A coming-out, coming-of-age film, David Freyne’s Dating Amber follows “baby gays” Eddie (Fionn O’Shea) and Amber (Lola Petticrew), who act as each other’s beards in order to stop speculation about their sexualities. Released on Amazon Prime Video in the UK for Pride month, it’s winning praise from Letterboxd members as a “charming” and “gentle” comedy-drama “full of loveliness that extends beyond the Irish accents”.

As the number of films by and about the gay and trans community expands, we asked Freyne if he could narrow down a list of ten favorites for us. The answer was no—instead, we got 25!

“There are so many extraordinary queer films beyond this list, but all of these films just really affected me when I saw them. Some were the first time I saw queerness on screen, while I deeply identified with others. And, as a filmmaker, each of them makes me braver to fight to tell stories that aren't always easy to get made.

“They are in no particular order because I don’t want to bump into Barry Jenkins (which is obviously going to happen) and have to explain that he is number five on that list (that he will definitely read) for no specific reason. It’s just a technicality.”

David Freyne’s 25 Favorite LGBTQIA+ Films

My Summer of Love (2004) Directed by Paweł Pawlikowski

Paweł Pawlikowski’s film feels like a dream that sweeps you up along with it, helped along by incredible early performances from Natalie Press and Emily Blunt. The hypnotic use of Goldfrapp's ‘Lovely Head’ is probably my favorite use of a song in any film ever. Their drug-fuelled dancing was a massive inspiration for Eddie and Amber’s baby steps into Dublin’s gay scene in Dating Amber.

Weekend (2011) Directed by Andrew Haigh

I never fail to cry buckets at the end of this heartbreaking gem. It’s small in the best sense of the word. Two people fall in love over one intimate weekend. Their gayness is both incidental and totally fundamental. It’s so delicate and moving. Andrew Haigh is a master.

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) Directed by Jamie Babbit

Jamie Babbit’s debut is a brilliant, campy comedy about a cheerleader sent to a conversion therapy camp. I love it for all the reasons many critics (at the time) disliked it. It is subversive, quirky and defiantly upbeat. And it stars Natasha Lyonne and Clea Duvall. Enough said.

Paris is Burning (1990) Directed by Jennie Livingston

I’m not saying anything new when I say that Paris is Burning is necessary viewing. It’s a hilarious, moving and eye-opening look at the (mostly) Black trans women in New York’s ball scene. It is a glimpse into the lives of these extraordinary people who risked everything to live authentically, for themselves and each other. And at a time when our trans family is so under attack, it is vital to see such iconic figures from our community. You’ve probably seen it. Re-watch it. Also those end notes will make you cry.

Happy Together (1997) Directed by Wong Kar-wai

As with all Wong Kar-wai’s work, it is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. It’s a tough watch, a portrait of a toxic, failing relationship. But it looks beautiful. They’re miserable and co-dependent. It’s abusive and awful. But it’s great. It really is a great film. I’m not selling this one well. Just watch it.

Moonlight (2016) Directed by Barry Jenkins

Definitely worth watching after Happy Together. Not just because it will make you feel better, but because Barry Jenkins has noted it as a big influence. Also, Moonlight is a masterpiece. You know that, of course. Side note: I realize I’ll never be able to create a hand-job scene as powerful and tender as Jenkins did here, but, in Dating Amber, I made three comedy hand-jobs. Take that Jenkins!

God’s Own Country (2017) Directed by Francis Lee

You can feel Francis Lee in every frame of this film. It’s personal filmmaking at its very best, with wonderful performances from Josh O’Connor and Alec Secăreanu. And it has the most beautifully romantic ending that you only realize we lack for LGBTQ characters when you see it laid out so wonderfully. When we were trying to finance Dating Amber and people suggested it was too Irish, I’d just reference God’s Own Country, which is so defiantly Yorkshire, and they’d shut up. Also, Secăreanu’s jumper with a thumb hole is my style icon. Bring on Ammonite!

Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) Directed by Marielle Heller

Marielle Heller is such a brilliant filmmaker. This film is based on the memoir by Lee Israel who forged letters by famous people to sell. It’s a genre piece that feels like it could have been made in the 70s. But what I love about it the most is that it is a rare example of a film that centers the friendship between a lesbian and a gay man. Why do films usually treat us like we exist in totally separate worlds? Anyway, it’s a joyous watch.

Tangerine (2015) Directed by Sean Baker

I’m obsessed with tightly plotted films and Tangerine doesn’t waste a frame. It’s 88 minutes of pure wit, charm and entertainment in line with the best of old-school Hollywood. You instantly forget that Baker’s film is shot on an iPhone and just get swept up in the extraordinary performances of Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez. It’s such a mystery they don’t work more. (Reader: it’s not a mystery. It’s because they are Black trans women, and the industry is shit.)

Portrait of a Lady On Fire (2019) Directed by Céline Sciamma

We all bow at the alter of Céline Sciamma. This film is perfection. The sparse-but-powerful use of music, exquisite photography and extraordinary performances that burn beneath the stillness. The final shots of Adèle Haenel will feed your soul for a year. (Side note: face masks have never looked so stylish.)

Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) Directed by John Schlesinger

This was John Schlesinger’s follow up to his best-known film, Midnight Cowboy. A middle-aged gay doctor (Peter Finch), and a divorced woman (Glenda Jackson), are both in an open love triangle with a younger, bisexual sculptor (Murray Head). It’s quite low-key and far tamer now than when it was released, but it’s a beautiful film and Schlesinger’s most personal. He was one of the few openly gay directors of his time. And Jackson’s performance steals it.

Far From Heaven (2002) Directed by Todd Haynes

Todd Haynes’ stunning film will make you immediately go out and discover all of Douglas Sirk’s glorious technicolor melodramas. Julianne Moore’s performance as a wife who discovers her husband is gay will break you. Dennis Quaid is also terrific as her closeted husband.

The Watermelon Woman (1996) Directed by Cheryl Dunye

Cheryl Dunye’s low-budget debut is a seminal queer film. A video store worker and documentarian (played by Dunye) starts a new relationship while becoming obsessed with ‘the watermelon woman’, a Black actress forgotten by history. It’s lo-fi, funny and a, far too rare, film about race and sexuality.

My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) Directed by Stephen Frears

It may have been the first time I saw gay characters on screen and, at the time, it petrified me. But what an amazing film about love, acceptance and the power to change. Fun fact: Daniel Day-Lewis spent a year as a tumble dryer in preparation for his role.

Beautiful Thing (1996) Directed by Hettie MacDonald

Hettie MacDonald’s coming-of-age film is so lovely, honest and tender. James Harvey adapted it from his own play of the same name. The soundtrack is almost entirely The Mamas and the Papas. I am surprised some cigar-smoking West-End mogul hasn’t attempted a musical adaptation. Or maybe they have, I don’t know.

Pride (2014) Directed by Matthew Warchus

Such a purely entertaining film while being urgent, political and deeply moving. Beresford’s script is a masterclass in plotting and if you don’t cry at the end then you are dead inside. Sorry but that’s just science. Also it has the most emotional postscript coda since, well, Paris is Burning.

Love is Strange (2014) Directed by Ira Sachs

Ira Sachs is one of my favorite current filmmakers and criminally underrated. I mean, he’s appreciated, but he needs to be lauded. Love is Strange is such a charming and quietly devastating love story about an older gay couple who lose their apartment and have to couch surf with relatives. It’s one of the most effective films in dealing with the rental crisis in big cities, something he does equally brilliantly in the follow-up, Little Men.

A Fantastic Woman (2017) Directed by Sebastián Lelio

Sebastián Lelio’s film is a beautiful story about one trans woman’s grief after the unexpected death of her older partner. But what makes this film so spectacular is the captivating performance by Daniela Vega. We need to see more of her on screen.

BPM (Beats per Minute) (2017) Directed by Robin Campillo

It’s a film about the AIDS activism of Act Up in 1990s Paris. What makes this so incredible is how joyous it is. Strobe-doused dance scenes punctuate this film that will make you want to take to the streets and fight for your rights.

The Queen of Ireland (2015) Directed by Conor Horgan

This documentary by Conor Horgan follows Ireland’s most famous drag queen, Panti Bliss (aka Rory O’Neill). It’s about his life, a legal battle (a bunch of homophobes sued Rory for calling them homophobes on national TV) and the staging of a show in his hometown. Central to all this is Ireland’s historic vote on marriage equality, something that Panti was a powerful figure in. If you want to laugh and have your heart soar in seeing confirmation of how a once painfully conservative country moved to love and equality, watch this.

The Kids Are All Right (2010) Directed by Lisa Cholodenko

Lisa Cholodenko’s feature is a warm, witty and realistic look at a lesbian couple and their children. Every performance is pitch perfect. I can’t believe it’s a decade old and that we have had so few similar films since.

Booksmart (2019) Directed by Olivia Wilde

We need more joyous films with queer leads and Olivia Wilde’s debut is just that. Set over one night of belated partying, we follow best friends Molly and Amy (Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever), one of whom happens to be a lesbian. It is just so much fun to watch.

All About My Mother (1999) Directed by Pedro Almodóvar

I mean this list could just be an Almodóvar filmography, but All About My Mother just happened to be the first of his I saw and it blew my little gay mind. It’s simply about love in its truest sense. Almodóvar said it best with his dedication, “To all actresses who have played actresses. To all women who act. To men who act and become women. To all the people who want to be mothers. To my mother.”

Female Trouble (1974) Directed by John Waters

You can’t have a queer film list without John Waters, and this 1974 classic is my favorite of his. It follows Dawn Davenport (played by the legendary Divine) from teen delinquent to the electric chair. It’s hilarious, irreverent and distasteful in the ways only Waters can be.

Saint Maud (2019) Directed by Rose Glass

Rose Glass’s debut film isn’t out yet and so technically shouldn’t be on the list. But I saw at a festival last year and loved it, so there. It’s a horror film about a private nurse (rising star Morfydd Clark) who tries to save the soul of her deviant and lesbian patient (the always-brilliant Jennifer Ehle). It’s eerie, stylish and the sort of debut all us filmmakers wish we had. Shut up, you’re jealous!

What do you think the VKs and Aks' sexualities might be?

Thereal answers to this would be “Whoever I want to ship them with atthe moment,” and “sexuality is a very complex thing, that no oneexcept for the person themselves can definitively decide what theirsexuality is.”

Afterall, some people that are seemingly asexual could just be voluntarilyignoring and moving past the sexual impulses they still feel.

However,since that probably isn’t the answer you’re looking for, here aremy guesses:

Mal– Pansexual

Thisis heavily biased as I am a Malvie shipper (among others), but Ican’t imagine Mal to not swing both ways considering that she has avery different worldview and attitude compared to everyoneelse thanks to being half-Faerie.

Whilenot NEARLY as adventurous as Jordan (more on her later), I figurethat Mal would take very little stock into physical attraction andmore in personality—given that she’ll live 300-500 years, therewill be a hot person in every generation but only one of eachinteresting individual she decides to get together with.

Evie– Bisexual

Again,biased, as canonically I wouldn’t be surprised if Evie was straightas an arrow, but there is also the argument that she would beattracted to both genders or is willing to be with people regardlessof gender thanks to her upbringing on the Isle.

Goods,access to luxuries and necessities, and great kissing and sex are notexclusive to one gender, and since pre-Auradon Evie is looking for aneasy, comfortable life more so than anything else, whatever you havedown there won’t really make much difference to her.

Thataside, the boys of the Isle still love themselves a girl who makesout with other girls.

Carlos– Questioning

It’shard to pin down what Carlos might be seeing as he’s never reallyhad time to sort out his sexuality or who he might be attracted to;“it’s hard to get a hard-on when everyone’s got a murder-on foryou,” in his words.

Oncehe’s free from the distraction of constantly having a targetpainted on his back and being abused and used by pretty much everyoneexcept Jace and Harry, and being able to actually talk to people andhave healthy friendships and social interactions, I wouldn’t besurprised if he’d spend a good long while experimenting and seeingwho he’d want to be with, if romance is even for him at all.

He’san intellectual first and foremost, and while it’d be fallacious tosay that extreme intelligence correlates strongly to a complete lackof interest or substantial disinterest in sex (Einstein was awomanizer), solving a difficult problem or making a breakthrough inyour chosen field is usually higher on the list of priorities than“have hot, sloppy make-out sessions with a lover.”

Jay– Bisexual

LikeEvie, this could be attributed to the shitty nature of life on theIsle, the lack of choices, and the fact that his sexuality is as mucha means to survive as it is to enjoy himself.

Jayprobably wouldn’t be too picky about the gender of who he’sflirting with, either, as it all eventually leads to sex or himgetting something he can’t get (read: steal) himself, orpost-Auradon, work for and earn.

Jordan– Omnisexual

Isay “Omni” instead of “Pan” as Jordan is an immortal, adjinn, and operates from a completely different rule set from any ofthe other Descendants characters, and as a result is willing,capable, and does have romantic relationships and interactions withalmost anything that moves, and some that don’t, with the solestandard being that they are considered intelligent enough to consentby Fae standards.

She’sgot all of eternity, and the perception of time only accelerates formortals like humans; five minutes in the dentist’s office passes asagonizingly slowly as it does for her now as it did when she was six,and seeing as she doesn’t need to sleep, eat, or even tire ingeneral, limiting your choices of how to relieve boredom andotherwise occupy yourself is stupid, in her opinion.

Ben– Straight, but currently Questioning

“Straight”in the sense that Ben’s been schooled and raised in a veryhetero-normative environment, where princes go off to marryprincesses, become kings and queens, and produce blood-related babiesfor legal heirs, rather than marrying other princes, having a goodfriend become their surrogate mother, or adopting a child anddeclaring them the legal heir instead.

Auradonis not entirely opposed to such unconventional family structures ingeneral—after all when you have to rub elbows with Ancient Greeksthat had sports drinks before artificial flavouring was invented foreveryone else (Hercules), supposedly mythologicalcreatures walking around and making pop culture references centuriesto thousands of years more advanced than their time (Aladdin,Mulan), and even talking animal people (Robin Hood),the differences between you and “others” stop being a very bigdeal.

However,they are still heavily conservative, and exempting trulyexceptional circumstances on the level of the events of theiroriginal movies (history rather than fairy tales, to them), theywould prefer their rulers to do everything as their ancestors hadbefore them.

Thoughonce the VKs shake everything up and start throwing Tradition out thewindow, and as it tries to climb back in, accidentally knock it backout onto the street because of the chaos and social upheaval thatinevitably occurs, it wouldn’t be surprising to me for Ben to makelike an actual teenager/college student and start to test andexperiment with the boundaries and the specifics of his sexuality.

Ifhe and Mal do break-up in the near-future like I theorize they will,I expect there to be a long string of new royal lovers that takes Benon a real crazy ride through the weird, wild, and draining world ofroyal romance.

Audrey– Straight, but…

Audreyis exactly like Ben, only I figure she wouldn’t even dare toquestion let alone experiment and explore her sexuality.

Thegirl already falls apart at the seams if her back-up singersdon’t show up on time and let her perform her big song numberperfectly. I would SERIOUSLY doubt she would even want to think ofsomething that will completely change her life and throw it intochaos like the realization that she might be gay or not interested inmarrying at all, and ultimately deviating from the “script” of“queen to a king and making beautiful princesses and princesses.”

I’mnot saying she couldn’t be attracted to women, or really anyoneother than through-and-through males, but for the sake of her mentalhealth, she’d just stick to guys just because that’s what she’ssupposed to do.

Doug– No Clue

Dougis difficult to ascertain as we don’t really have much on him ingeneral, and I don’t really consider his relationship with Evie incanon to be worth much as it feels incredibly forced to me, and thecircumstances behind it make me question the legitimacy of it.

There’salso the fact that he’s a half-human dwarf hybrid, and like Carlos,I think he’d have to get over the lifelong social isolation andnever really belonging before he even begins to seriously ponder orexplore his sexuality.

Freddie– Straight

UnlikeAudrey who’s straight because that’s the tradition and what’sexpected of her, Freddie is almost exclusively into guys because ofbeing badly burned by her relationships and interactions with othergirls.

Likethe iconic Mean Girls, the ladies of the Isle’s worst enemyare each other, and they do not hesitate to viciously compete,backstab, and sabotage one another, all while smiling and feigningcivility. “At least with the guys, they have the decency to punchin the face or clobber you on the head, and leave your sense ofself-worth intact,” in her words.

Herinteractions with CJ, which my friend @saveshootingstar theorizes wasas much a romantic partnership as well as a villainous one, doesn’treally help her case.

Mytheories on Zevon is that he’s straight largely because hisrelationship with his mother is FAR from healthy, even by the Isle’salready loose and terrible standards, and is as much of astereotypical “mama’s boy” as you can get:

Almostentirely dependent; unhealthily attached to his mother and hasdifficulty separating her from any aspect of his life; and projectshis needs and desires for her onto other women—TO BE VERY CLEAR,this is solely the desire to be “praised,” “cared for,” andhave someone that can viciously tear apart his sense of self worthand coddle him in an unhealthy codependent relationship the way onlyYzma can.

There’salso the proven, canonical fact that he is attracted to Mal becauseshe’s vicious, cruel, and in charge, much like his mother.

CJ– Asexual

CJstrikes me as the kind of pirate queen who’s only interested in theburning and the pillaging, and none of the raping bit. Not that shefinds the act of sexual assault abhorrent, but because it and anyother sexual acts just don’t get her blood pumping and herexcitement levels shooting up like swinging from a rope, beatingsomeone into submission, and sailing away with all their stuff.

Shecan get charmingand romantic, but it’s usually just as part of her nefariousschemes.

Chad - Straight

Like Ben and Audrey, Chad has been raised all his life to believe that the heterosexual royal dream is what he should aspire to and what his life’s trajectory is going to be, though for a nice change of pace, Auradon still assures him they will accept a King and his Consort than a Queen.

That aside, Chad’s entire purpose in the universe is to be every single “priveleged straight white boy” stereotype given life, and a means to show the worst of Auradon in a single character, alongside Audrey.

While it would be interesting for him to be gay, bi, queer, or even asexual, in the last case only ever using women to further his own plans and make his life better at their cost, it goes against his purpose in the universe, and feels wrong to me in general.

I’m not saying that a specific personality type leads to a specific sexuality, or that Chad is definitely straight from all his behaviour, but it just doesn’t feel like a good decision to me to make him deviate from the straight and hetero; it feels like you’re just making him queer for the sake of it, or as a gimmick that doesn’t serve much purpose for the story or his character.

Jane - Pansexual

Like Mal, Jane follows a very different rule set, and more-so than her given that she is a full-Faerie and lives for all of eternity, and isn’t bound by mortal limitations like fatigue, sickness, or hunger. She chooses her lovers based on personality first and foremost, though I would imagine she tends towards females more than males.

The traditional, stereotypical “Manly Man of Manliness Male” ideal Auradon has would probably be a HUGE source of bullying, self-esteem issues, and distress to her, and as she can’t ever forget anything, the trauma really is forever, and isn’t likely to change any time soon.

She also strikes me as someone who enjoys soft and warm things in general, and boobs hit both notes.

Allie - Wonderland

Look, Allie is from a place where 2+2=Fish and a heron and the Sky (not someone named Sky, the actual sky above their heads) debate the accuracy of a mathematical theorem that states this formula will produce a pufferfish; the animals and even the objects talk, are animated, and intelligent; and there is apparently a ready supply of potions that can shrink people, among other drugs and alchemical supplies we still haven’t seen.

Shit gets weird, is what I’m saying, and I don’t think we have the vocabulary nor the ability to compherend the kind of kink that goes on down the rabbit hole or through the looking glass.

Lonnie - No Clue

We don’t know enough about Lonnie, and it would be dangerously stereotypical of me to assume that she’s a lesbian just because she’s athletic.

My personal headcanon is that she’s gay, seeing as she was largely raised in a heavily male environment as “one of the boys,” or among very athletic and non-stereotypically feminine girls, and more so, she never really was interested in muscles on guys since as far back as she could remember.

Mulan being an outlier in so many ways herself, it surprises no one that her daughter also breaks numerous norms.

“2013 REWIND: DJ Relenless Talks Music, Politics, Life And The Future”

What can I say about the year that gave us "twerking" and the "Gay Lumberjack meetsHillbilly Chic" beard? The year that blatant abuse of power with a side order of racism and homophobia was the order of the day. Where Pop Divas battled for the top of the charts, but were side swiped by a smarter girl from Houston.

Yes, 2013 was a quite a year in news and for me personally.

It seems like every year Reality TV gets more and more out of control. We went from a sassy toddler beauty pageant contestant to a backwoods redneck duck calling family and suddenly became surprised that the monarch of it was homophobic and racist. And not wanting to be outdone….the Kardsahians pulled every trick out of their Prada bags to stay relevant. Too bad that not even marrying Kanye West could keep them afloat on the internet. Kanye had a moment of truth on Jimmy Kimmel when he went on to address the parody of his BBC interview. For just a second, I understood his point of view, but then he just kept on talkin'! His mouth is gonna be his biggest downfall. He has some clever twists of phrases in his lyrics, but his idea of being a super genius is what keeps everyone from taking him seriously. Poor Paris Hilton…..she's no longer the "rotten spoiled whore darling" of media. Instead of releasing that horrible song with Lil' Wayne she should have done a sex tape with him. That would have kept her in the news for at least a month. We were continuously being bombarded with information everyday. How could anyone keep up or pay attention?

Musically, we started out the year doing the "Harlem Shake". This really funky dance featured in many Hip Hop videos got appropriated and transformed into convulsions of the masses. Great beat, but no one I saw online was doing it right. This was kinda the "Year of Appropriation" (folks basically stealing other things from other cultures…..some for music, some to shock and some just to get a laugh). Even my alter-ego, Jade Elektra found herself being appropriated by Circuit DJ/Producers who years ago would never play or admit they liked tracks like "Bitch You Look Fierce" or "Why Are You Gaggin'?", but now are stealing riffs and lyrics to make these outdated tribal tracks for shirtless steroid boys to throw their hands in the air while their drugs kick in. That's so 1998!

The word "twerk" was on everyone's lips after the 2013 MTV Music Video Awardsbecause little Hannah Montana decided that once and for all she was no longer going to be a Disney Princess. So, when Miley Cyrus bent over in front of Canada's Marvin Gaye,Robin Thicke during a mash-up of "We Can't Stop" and "Blurred Lines" the course of Pop Music history was changed forever. Online and in the media, Lady GaGa and Katy Perrywere slated to duke it out for the top of the charts by September. After that moment, no one was even thinking about an "Applause" or a "Roar". But no one could have predictedBeyonce coming around the corner in at the last moment in December with her brilliantly unannounced CD and Visual album. Finally….an artist got it right. Release more than a bunch of songs. Give your fans a complete package and they will go out and buy it in droves.

Rivalries between Chris Brown and Drake or Azealia Banks and Iggy Azalea seem to cool by summer. I think a few people found out that the internet could be a dangerous place for their careers. Bad publicity is still bad publicity. And when you are trying to sell records in this economy…..it would behoove you to sit down and shut the fuck up! I didn't get the apology that I wanted from Eminem, but I did get to hear him say that he is not a role model and that he did a lot of his early 2000's antics for publicity. But like Andrew "Dice" Clay andLisa Lampanelli, you can only go so far shocking people before it turns into hate. On top and everyone's talking about you and then poof…..you're gone. The next obnoxious thing comes along. So, I lifted my ban on him just in time for his well crafted album, "The Mashall Mathers LP 2" (produced by the legendary Rick Ruben).

Idiots like Justin Bieber and Rob Ford really found out how bad publicity travels around the world in a second. These fools spent the year just writing jokes about themselves with every move. And it's sad that the City Government in Toronto has nothing place to remove Fordfrom office after admitting he lied about smoking crack, got caught on video with some shady dealings, possible murder suspect and told a room full of reporters that he has more than enough "pussy" to eat at home. Bieber just really needs a good ass-whippin'. Punk ass bitches like him are always super tough behind bodyguards when he would bust a grape in a fruit fight (to quote Jay Z). God….please make his announcement about retiring TRUE!

It was quite the year for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. These two have played their hand very well. I just wish that they would give thanks to Ellen DeGeneres for really launching their success by having them on to perform "Same Love" in October of 2012. And speaking of lesbians on daytime television……it has been great to see the void of Oprah filled with two dykes competing for ratings every weekday. Queen Latifah & Ellen seem to be fighting over guests and who's funnier. The only thing is one is completely out and the other dances around the subject.

But we did have some new entries into the game. The LaToya Jackson of the Braxton family, Tamar Braxton really stretched her 15 minutes into 20. Kendrick Lamar shook things up on the Hip Hop scene by just being raw on his lyrics. And thank God that damn "Royals" song by Lorde seems to be dying down! I love when they hype a new artist that they think is the next big thing. She should take a look back at Nora Jones. Praised and revered….now no one knows where she is (taco stand, maybe). At least with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis they had a few years under their belts to find their sound and message. This kid's album sounds like one song. No variations and nothing interesting. I don't wanna hear another teenage girl who sounds like the voice of a baby doll programed with the latest catch phrases…..just tired! But we'll see what happens at the Grammys.

And speaking of the Grammys…..I definitely think it's gonna be a Justin Timberlake year. I think the lawsuit by the Gaye family will hurt Robin Thicke's chances. But Pharrell Williamsshould snatch a couple awards for producing and singing the track "Happy" for "Despicable Me 2". Let's just hope there won't be any awkward performances like Lady GaGa & R. Kelly's "Do What U Want" on SNL or Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" on theAmerican Music Awards even though they both made for good television.

Apparently some other "good television" in 2013 was "Breaking Bad". Who would have thought a show about dealing meth would be one of the highest rated show? Perhaps with the state of the U.S. it's not that surprising at all. From the blatant sabotage of the government by the arrogant and racist Republicans to the dumbing down of TV programing, many didn't have much to turn o except drugs to cope. Medical marijuana has legalized pot in certain areas of the country and many are trying to find doctors who will give them a prescription for any ailment.

And the Reality TV shows just keep on a comin'! My favorite new title coming from the states is "Sex Sent Me To The E.R." (probably because I could have been on this show….but we'll save that story for my book). As a member of the Screen Actors Guild, it saddens me that good actors can't get work today while simple and common people can allow cameras to follow them around and makes millions. And talking with one of my good friends who is an excellent director, I realized that this Reality Crap has effected our actual actors in America. Now perfectly good actors are "acting" like Reality Stars to get work. This is why Australians and Brits are playing Americans better than Americans. It reminds me of when I was applying for a job at Gym Bar in Chelsea, NY back in 2009 and the owner actually asked me to not mix my sets. Mainly because the norm in the bars in Manhattan these days at some gay hangouts is a DJ who cannot mix. That is killing the art of DJ-ing and definitely killing the art of acting!

But never fear….Kevin Hart came up with one of the most brilliant ideas. "The Real Husbands Of Hollywood" has flipped the script. It's a fake reality show with real celebrities. Very funny stuff! I predict that Mr. Hart will take the place of Dave Chapelle in 2014. God knows, he's about to drop several movies at once to start the New Year off. Let's just hope he doesn't implode like Dave did.

The other disturbing trend I watched in 2013 was the Conservative Party of Canada's government borrowing pages from the U.S. Republicans' playbook. Not many realized thatFOX News opened an office in Montreal this year. That means that the Republicans have raised enough money off the puppet shows like "Family Guy", "American Idol" and "The Simpsons" to expand to another country. The very things that the Republicans hate and want to fight to keep down like gay rights, immigration, poor people's dreams, etc…are the very things they sell us on their shows to make money to continue their agenda. Their remarking of voting zones and opposing Obama tooth and nail is part of their plan to take back the White House in 2016. And don't think for a moment that the Obamacare website debacle was not a scheme by the Republicans. It's just too bad that him being the first African-American President has left him in a position where he can't call them out without them saying he's playing the "race card". These days everyone is holding their breath hoping that Hillary Clinton will run in the next election. At this moment and time, she seems to be the only threat to the Republicans. But a lot can change over the next year couple of years. Remember back in 2008 when we all thought she was a shoe-in?

But I guess the most frustrating thing to watch this year was the acts of racism and homophobia. The George Zimmerman Verdict in the murder case of Trayvon Martin really sent a message about America that polarized race relations. It gave us the new and improved "Jim Crow". It raised the question "Have we really evolved at all?" People likePaula Deen and Phil Robertson are great example of the rebranding of "Jim Crow". Celebrities like Julianna Hough dressing in "blackface" for Halloween, Steve Martintweeting a racist jokes, the attacks on Nina Davuluri for being crowned the first Miss America of Indian decent….all tell a different story about "the land of the free." Some tried to apologize while others just "stood their ground" and let their racist thoughts flow like theRiver Jordan. And even though Elisabeth Hasslebeck was finally asked to leave "The View", I think it was a little too late.

But I guess the most ridiculous thing I just read about recently is the "National Chick-Phil-A Day" coming up on January 21st, 2014. Supporters of Phil Robertson are planning to converge on all Chick-fil-A restaurants to show their support for him and freedom of speech. Hey…it worked when the company came out against gay rights! But in a strange move the fast food chain has quickly denounced any involvement with the movement. Probably because Robertson is not only a homophobe but also a racist. So, the company has had to pick and choose their hate. Yes…we hate homosexuals, but we love our black customers who eat chicken!

But as for me, 2013 taught me a lot about myself and where my life is going. With the help of my husband (John Allan), Todd Klinck, Phillip Fournier and the owners of Crews & Tangos I successfully maintained a monthly fundraiser for one of the charities that is dear to my heart…..Toronto's People With AIDS Foundation. Probably because I have witnessed first hand the good work they do for people living with HIV/AIDS. I don't think that everyone realizes that all it takes is one person to start a movement or to take a stand. I hope that I have inspired a few people to live in their truth. It's the only way to live….for me at least. I've learned that it is never too late to right a wrong (especially when it comes to your family).

2013 also taught me to always stand up for what you believe in (even when it is the unpopular thing to do). Pride week in Toronto showed me how some people only see what they want to see. Supporting your friend when they have done something that is wrong or controversial does not make their actions right. It only makes you look uneducated. Opening a conversation and dialogue about different view points should not turn into a "Twlight" movie with Team This and Team That. If you don't know what it is to be discriminated against or degraded because of who or what you are, then of course you will not have the same view point as of someone who has. Social Media has turn everyone into their own little islands. And our youth suffer the most because they actually believe the hype of entitlement. A few likes or quick comments posted on a page makes them believe that they are that important when there are much bigger issues at hand.

So, even though I have lost a few friends and acquaintances behind standing up against a racist act, I have gained a few a long the way and remain proud that I said something when most didn't see what was wrong in the first place.

It weird thinking back at the movie version of George Orwell's "1984". "Big Brother" was a real threat to our lives (or at least we thought back then). The idea that someone was watching us 24/7 without our control or consent was a scary concept. Now "Big Brother" is a reality show and everyone is clammering to post their most intimate details online. I love seeing photos of people behaving badly, smoking joints and almost naked in their bathrooms. And then they wonder why they can't get a job! It would seem that "Big Brother" has figured out how to watch us with our permission and no one is the wiser.

For 2014….I pray for clarity. I pray for continued good health. I pray for a common ground where we all can be heard and still respect each other. I don't have to agree with you, but that does not mean we cannot work together to make a better place for all of us.
