spones - older fics recs
seeing that people are interested in older fics, let me link some more that are not on ao3 but on personal websites (sometimes the formatting is a bit... you’d better just copy it into some text editor in order to read it comfortably) and that were written prior to 2010, but mostly in early 2000s. It’s not all of them (of course), I’m just linking those I at some point in the past three years enjoyed and that are long-ish. They can be a bit dated and sometimes a bit weird. Most of them are mature to explicit. If you want more warnings, you can message me.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Ply's Disease (explicit-ish at the end) - it deals with a disease, obviously, so proceed with caution if it isn’t something you want to read. Mention of McCoy/OC(m)
The Prayer of St. Francis (E) - I haven’t actually read this one, but one day I want to. The summary is “the triumvirate as we know them”, but it’s spones flavoured. And it’s spones who are bonded. It spans the series up to Spock’s death.
The author’s page in case you wanna read other fics by them.
Nets in the Wind - mirror!spones, has Sybok, set after Spock kills Kirk, in case you mind. It’s a bit open ended.
The World Bewitched - mirror!spones, interesting world building imho
The Other One (E) - “After the encounter with the Mirror universe, both men have some problems they have to deal with.” (I actually don’t remember this one, but I have it saved... but don’t judge me if it’s weird; read the author’s notes) sequel Sugar Magnolia. These were written in 1998.
On Vulcan genomic engineering and love - this one though is a bit weird (proceed with an open mind), but the premise is quite interesting - McCoy becomes a half-Vulcan (I think this was actually the only fic I’ve read with that theme). “Spock has wanted for a long time to become fully Vulcan and finally devices a formula to allow him to manipulate his genetic structure to do just that. But in a freak accident, he injects McCoy with the formula, causing the Doctor to become half-Vulcan. Now with pon farr on Spock's heels, he must help the doctor learn to deal with his Vulcan half, while the two of them both try to live with their feelings for each other.” some hints at McCoy/Vulcan OC(m)
My Little Town - takes place after TUC, I’m personally very fond of this one for some reason. It has a completely different background for McCoy than what’s common. “McCoy’s mother just died, and McCoy goes to deal with the house. Spock tags along.” McCoy’s parents had a huge age gap, so if you’re bothered by it, maybe don’t read it.
stories by Tempest - Blackbird has trans!McCoy, Yon t'Ashaya - McCoy and Spock both serve on a Vulcan ship, Spock goes into pon farr [these two fics are what stuck with me after reading them three years ago, but the author has a lot more]
now you can also go through this list, but a lot of the links are broken, some can be accessed through wayback machine, some can’t.
and then you can also look through the Spiced Peaches list, which has fics from 2005 and up. Just in case you’ve never heard of the online spones zine.
---
also a bonus tos!mirror!mckirk because why not. It’s a wip, unfortunately, but it’s still worth it because it’s tos!mckirk~ And like most other mirror verse fics on this list, it isn’t as dark as what’s written these days. It’s actually pretty tame. It’s by the same author as The World Bewitched and Nets in the Wind above.
The Getting or the Having & Dust - “In the Mirror-Universe Kirk finds out that his counterpart has a sexual relationship with McCoy. This makes him thinking things over.”

This fuckimg song
This fuckign
I love it and hate it at the same time
I have never heard this up to a year ago where i just stumbled upon it in a playlist but its so nostalgic sounding SO NOSTALGIC when i LITERALLY COULD NOT HAVE HEARD IT when i was small and yet it gives me the feeling that i remember listening to it in like 2009 at grandmas house on summer break at 23:35 pm at night on animax after cartoon network ended for the day, bc i stayed a lot at my grandparents' house on sumemr break and i watched anime there bc mom could not say no but i could not have done that since darker than black DID NOT AIR IN HUNGARY AT ALL, not with sub, not with dub, it did not air, i looked into it
Im literally nostalgic for THE NOTHING I HAVENT EVEN SEEN THE SHOW
Why the fucm does it sound so nostalgic i remember the nothing my brain is making up shit
it does have familiar sounds tbh, as in, many notes and tunes and vibes typical of that time, so probably it's a culmination of that haha
even to me it doesn't sound completely new, even tho i wasnt near anime in 2010 yet.... it kinda has that cowboy bebop vibe? or smg like that, maybe somene more at home in older anime knows why it sounds familiar haha

sam going vegan at stanford. no more hunting people saving things has left him with a compulsion to Do Good and Reduce Harm in his day to day life, and after traveling the midwest constantly as a kid he has some idea of what beef feedlots at least look like. he decides one way to reduce harm is to stop supporting the killing of those animals.
so he stops eating beef. it's not like he's only eating fast food still and hamburgers are the only option anyway; he eats at the stanford dining hall. there's pumpkin soup and oatmeal and a salad bar and curry and plain pasta and fruit and fries.
then he thinks about it and decides to treat this decision like a little bit of a case. so he goes to the library and researches for himself which is a weird kind of not-exactly-nostalgia. and he learns about the factory farming industry and dairy production. and he doesn't do half-measures and he's trying to be committed to his choices and beliefs so he decides there in the library that he's vegan, starting from that moment.
socially, he expects to be the odd one out anyway, he's seen that way anyway, he knows it; he can feel it. how he's a little too alert; how his casual interactions with others aren't a practiced reflex. refusing some food just seems like another small thing in the long list of reasons he's unusual to the other students, even his friends.
anyway, jess, who's been vegetarian for awhile, likes that he's vegan. she eats vegan at their house, but will have some dairy if she's out somewhere. it bothers sam a little in the back of his mind but he doesn't want to control her. and he knows their belief systems aren't exactly aligned anyway; he's always scanning for monsters.
brady makes fun of him a little once or twice, playful, friendly. then after sophmore year's thanksgiving break he makes a few more comments that are a bit more cruel.
although dean made sure sam never was hungry for long as a kid, this new mentality that the food selection in many places is now limited for sam comes pretty easily. the sparse vegan options in the stanford dining hall are a way more plentiful spread than the options in one of the motel rooms he grew up in.
sam does get a weird sense of simultaneous satisfaction and guilt at seeing hamburgers like he'd share with his dad and dean and knowing, more and more as the months go on, that he's not the kind of person who eats them anymore. but he feels that way about a lot of things he does at stanford.
then years later, keeping to veganism as best he can, back in the family business (he keeps reminding himself, "as far as possible and practical"), he meets ruby. for the most part, he keeps his own personal definition of veganism and decides about eating things like honey on his own terms, rather than by what others seem to think. but he does remember dryly, as his mouth is metallic with ruby's blood, that human products are accepted as vegan if given consensually. later he thinks somehow maybe it's vegan for her to give it but not for him to take; maybe he is the animal harmed in the interaction.
time goes on and he's more wary than ever of being poisoned possesed altered he wants his body to be his own. this becomes another reason to be vegan, not consuming other beings into his body so it remains his.

I think the fact that I spend a lot of time looking at old posts from 2010-2015 in niche fandoms does something to me. It’s very freeing, like I’m not so caught up in the immediacy of current stuff. Also just like, thinking a lot about the people whose blogs im seeing, more than half of which are deleted or inactive, and 99% of which haven’t posted what I’m looking for in years. And their personality, or at least what it was 7-12 years ago, shows in their posts. It’s like when you find a really old letter in a book or something, but not as old. Do they ever still think about this old blog? Did this media have any sort of long lasting impact on them, or did they forget about it after posting about it for a little while? Are they still friends with their mutuals from the time? Are they alive?
