Redraw of my Dimiclaude modern AU crossover fanart.
3/11/2023 version of my previous 3/7/2023 sketch: https://www.tumblr.com/mysticdragon3art/711217080605786112/oh-no-alfred-is-feeding-dimitri-weeds-lol
There were some problems with my original 3/7/2023 sketch that I wanted to fix, and I did fix most of it digitally on Krita. But after a few recent scares with electronic devices breaking, I'd feel much better if I could have finalized versions of my drawings in my analog sketchbook, as much as possible. That way, when drives fail or laptops get damaged, I can just re-scan my sketchbooks, instead of losing a lot of digital work to be re-done.
3/11/2023 pencil trace of 3/7/2023 sketch, onto wax paper, flipped, traced with pencil again, then flipped again, to transfer onto sketchbook page. Inked lines with Stabilo Point 88 pens, Copic Multiliner Black 0.25 & 0.03 pens, Copic Multiliner Wine 0.3 pen, and Kuretake Zig Clean Color Real Brush 054. Colored with Copic markers and ShinHan Art Touch markers. Messed up Law's face and fixed on Krita. After I drew Law with an annoyed expression in my original 3/7/2023 sketch, I wanted to give him a cute expression, but ran out of time. (Fortunately, got funny feedback on that. Thanks, dimiclaudeblaigan!) So this version gives Law the cute expression I wanted. Some grooves in paper from tracing, made it too difficult to draw Claude's top eyelids.
Modern AU where Dimitri is a trans man married to Claude, and their children are Alfred (from Fire Emblem Engage) and Law (from Tales of Arise). Headcanons inspired by https://dmclemblems.tumblr.com/post/695340088928993280/the-happy-dimiclaude-family-expands-with-a-new

World building and theories of Engage
Alfred and Alfred the Great
Alfred, The Crowned Prince of Firene, has a real life inspiration, the Anglo-Saxon king Alfred the Great (849-899). Alfred the Great is probably best known for successfully defending his kingdom, Wessex, from Viking attacks. The surrounding kingdoms of Northumbria, East Anglia and Mercia had fallen and the odds were stacked against him, Alfred the Great and his father King Aethelred, were driven back into the heart of their kingdom and had to employ guerrilla tactics.
Alfred has similar claims to fame, with the help of the Divine Dragon he successfully defends his kingdom from attacks by the corrupted and Elusian forces.
There are other similarities between the two kings. When Alfred the Great was a young boy, he went on a pilgrimage with his father to Rome. This visit inspired a view of kingship based on religious morals and values. Alfred visited the Divine Dragon as a boy as well. These visits helped Alfred form a close friendship with the Divine Dragon.
Alfred the Great was a champion of education and taught himself Latin so he could translate important texts into English. He also set up schools to educate all young men. He also made military reforms which included: a rota systems fields were not neglected, fortified towns which formed the basis of the English system of boroughs and shires and strengthened the navy with the aid of foreign skilled craftspeople. To restore faith in the economy he increased the silver content in coins and created a new design, he introduced a fairer tax system, and introduced written laws. Alfred the Great was a reformer who improved his people's quality of life.
Alfred the Great had a condition with symptoms similar to Crohn's disease. He often went through periods of great pain and sickness, especially after grand feasts. He died early, (early 50s), but still managed to marry and raise an heir. Alfred has a similar condition and dies early because of it. His dislike of spicy food and strong tasting food could be because they make him unwell. There is no mention of Celine becoming Queen so I imagine that Alfred also married and had an heir.

Fire Emblem Engage redesigns!
Tumblr media
Starting a series where I redesign (hopefully) all playable FE Engage characters!
First up: Alfred, Etie and Boucheron
Some of my thoughts while drawing:
I'm going for a fairytale theme for the Firene characters! With Alfred being a classic storybook prince, Robin hood for Etie and Goldilock's for Boucheron (based on the bears; it's a little loose lol)
Etie probably has my least favorite design in the entire game. I don't think it says anything meaningful about her character. I even thought she was going to be the snobby hime type at first. I also have a personal vendetta against green/orange color scheme.
So I kept her main color green, but changed her hair to red; which I think fits her passionate personality way more. Also gave her some genuine muscle and a fit to show it off 💪🏻 but kept some femininity with frils and bows.
Alfred's design has a silhouette I really like, so I kept pretty close to it! I gave him a softer color pallette to match his friendly vibes. I also made his hair a little wavy just like his mom and sister.
Boucheron always gave me NPC vibes.. he is also cursed with the same dreadful color palette of orange and green! He's a very nice and approachable guy, which I wanted to reflect in a warm color palette. I also made him more top heavy to give him a more interesting silhouette

Have you ever had the reflex of wanting to take the Engage's cast defense when people said "they are such simple characters, there is nothing behind their gimmicks" ? or when you hear "we had to wait for a whole DLC to have ACTUAL decent characters !"
Because I need to say it. Yes the DLC characters are excellent character but the game already had literal gems in it, but because of spoilers, see under the cut
Alfred is a friendly guy that spend his day obsessed with training and muscles because he wants to be stronger and help his friend. He is presented in many of his support as helpful to a fault, trying so hard to be useful to his friends he ends up comming off as clumsy like in his support with Alear, he acts first and thinks after also because of this. He is so willing to help people he was willing to dig a well for villagers. The A support he has with Céline reveals this is a complex comming from Alfred suffering from a chronic illness but rather then lamenting himself on his weak body, he tried to look for ways to become stonger physically so he can help people because as the crown Prince of Firene he wants to be useful to his country and to others and general and not be seen as a burden, even if it leads him to be reckless. I see people complaining that it's only in his support with Céline that this pop up and that he should speak about it more... when in the literal supports Alfred explained he wants nobody to know about his condition and don't like to speak about his illness because he doesn't want to be looked at with pity by people but to appear as a strong, bright and confident guy. That's why he only brought that up in his support with Céline, his sister who knew him and was here when he was so ill that people though he was going to die, his support with Rafal because of how similar those two are
and his brought up by another handful of Céline support which makes sense that she would talk about how worried she is about her brother rather then have the one guy that says in his support he hates talking about his illness brough it 99% of the time. Alfred is a mentally strong guy that tries to overcome a deadly illness to become as physically strong as he is mentally hence him thinking that "barbarian" is a compliment and Céline ending up using it herself as a compliment at the end of their A support, all his support shows him to be the friendly guy that tries his best to become stronger, his obssession with muscle comes from his weak constitution and him not realizing he is already very strong, albeit mentally, but also to make up for the weak body he had been given.
Diamant is a brave young man, and despite his love for his country, his patriotism doesn't blind him to the reality that Brodia's wealth comes at the cost of many lives and wishes to oppose the nobility and even go as far as going against his father because he wished Brodia could live in his peace with his neighbour and because of the terrible impact it has on both Brodia and Elusia, sacrificing many lives to gain profit. He does his best to be seen as flawless but he really is just a human being that can sing, his scared of caterpillars and has been traumatized by fire magic, a fear he tries to overcome in his objective to become stronger to protect his country.
Alcryst is a young man with severe self acceptance issue and a low opinion of himself because of the Brodian court constantly comparing him to his brother, which he ended up interiorizing and no matter how supportive his surrounding is, he can't help but feel like he doesn't deserves it, making him feel even more negative about himself. This is evident in front of people he admire, his support with Fogado makes it clear : Fogado is everything Alcryst wished he could be, therefore it makes him feel like he is a kettle, much like how he feels towars Diamant, and that's because he admires Fogado this much he feels like he doesn't deserves a friend like him. However, he is perfectly capable of overcoming his apolegetic nature when necessary. He is incredibly protective, we met him having accepted to protect the border of his country, fighting bandits, theives and animal threatening it, he isn't afraid to fight when it means protecting others, when we fight Hortensia, he offers Lapis, and Citrinne, his retainer to protect them with an impressive assurance, he is the one reassuring Citrinne and telling her to trust in her own capacity, he loves his brother so much that when fighting the other Diamant he completely forgot the Diamant he is fighting isn't his brother, but a double assuring him that he would never hurt him and being so perturbed about it it was painfully, especially considering that if he fight King Morion, he ends up putting his feelings aside and said that he would be the one killing it just to preserved Diamant's consience from the guilt of ending his father, even though he was shown minutes ago to be so devastated to have seen him in the Corrupted state he begged Alear to stay, saying he refused to abandonn him, and being so perturbed about it he blammed it on Ivy and refused to forgive her until she properly apologized to him in their C support and he saw she was being sincere about it.
Hortensia is obsessed with cuteness because she admires her mother, whom Ivy described as a strong woman shining by her beauty, thinking that it was what made her mother so loved, but she is also a very clever girl to the point that in Elusia's academy she was at the head of her class. Both sister were the only children of concubines to grew close due to Ivy's mother ending up befriending Hortensia's even though she at first caused her to cry many times since concubines were all fighting against each other. Ivy ended up taking the Divine dragon as deity rather the Sombron because of her disagreement of Elusian court's behaviour, the rituals and because she felt closer to the Divine Dragon's value, and despite comming across as cold, she is actually a very kind person who loves her sister dearly, and her country too, and she is forced to abandon it to Sombron and the Hounds. It's Hortensia's love for her father and her country that got her to cooperate with them at first before realizing she couldn't save her precious country in this way and that ressurection or not, she had to give up on her father.
Framme out of all people starts to be introduced as Alear's fangirl but the following of her support makes it clear that it's because Alear and Lumera were always a source of inspiration and hope for her, that her faith helped her during the hard times or when she missed her parents. Her support with Diamant showed that she is such a sensitive soul that she wanted to abandonned her history lesson because it scare the sheet out of her to learn about all those awful conflicts that made the continent tremble.
Citrinne is a noblewoman that is the Brodian royal's cousin and is rather used to luxury, having the habits to use incredibly pricy gift to link with other because of how Brodian's court works, but she was sent as Alcryst's retainer because she is from a noble family, close to the Royal one at that and that the nobility needed her as a bridge to communicate and watch over Diamant by Alcryst's side since Diamant already had 2 retainers, which causes her to have an inferiority complex and underestimate her own capacity since she believe she was choosen for no other reason then her rank.
And those are just example, I'd keep up the list but you'all need to read their support, there is more to those character then just their gimmick and they aren't just simple characters. And it's not limited to the Xenologue cast. You just decided that their support weren't interesting enough because unlike the game whose name shall not be prounonced, because they don't spend 99% of their support infodumping you about their trauma or past to the point of sounding convoluted * points at Yuribird* they use their support to expend on their character as is now and rarely brough up their past, and while for some it's justified like Alfred, for others it's indeed a pity, but all of their supports matters as a stone to characterization and while some have less chemistry with their support partner then others, it doesn't shy away from this fact.
Also NO Céline isn"t just obsessed by tea. Tea time is a thing she genuinely enjoys because she is a refined young lady due to her wanting to help her brother and sounding mature, scolding him for being too reclkless because she is worried about him, making a secret alliance with Alcryst because both of them wants to protect and help their brother whom they love very much during their life time, and she is very protective of Firene, wishing that she could stop brigands and thieves from attacking it, even if it means resorting to extreme measures, but she is still pretty much a pacifist as indicated by her interactions with her counterpart in the other world and isn't as egoist as this one version of Céline.
Just because a character isn't traumatized or don't brag 99% of the time about it doesn't mean they are simple or have nothing beyond them past gimicks, and reducing their character to the few support they are willing to talk about the past they are trying to overcome when the entirety of their support is about establishing their characters is beyond the pale.

i don’t think diamant and alfred’s a-support is particularly out of character // literally no one asked
pardon for the typos and occasional salty tone; i really don’t have the energy to sift through every single line diamant says at 330 am, but i needed to get this out of my head because people in general seem to misunderstand why diamant says what he does and what his genuine intent is/could be and i think it deserves some expansion upon. thoughts under the cut:
i actually wanna start in their b-support because i think that adds some important context.
diamant: It's funny... I never thought I'd end up crossing swords with a rival prince outside of a battlefield. [...] It's nice to think that the two of us will come out of this war as friends. alfred: Hate to break it to you, but I'm not so sure that's possible. Things won't always be like this. diamant: They won't? alfred: Afraid not. By the time the war's over...we'll be even better buddies! diamant: Haha! I like the way you think, Prince Alfred.
i think it’s very important to note alfred’s response here. i don’t think he’s a stupid as fans tend to think he is. sure, he can be an airhead, and is definitely a muscle-focused brute, but he’s just as much the crown prince as diamant is. i see a lot of people, in general, downplaying how he actually behaves in game for the “cute uwu sunshine flower boi“ trope (this is a post for another time). “i’m not so sure [we’ll still be friends post-war] is possible“ is such a grounded in reality line. alfred is thinking forward to the future- a future where brodia and firene don’t consider each other allies. it’s possible he was alluding to his illness, as well, saying that “i will die before we truly consider each other best friends“ (this is another post for another time).
of course, he can see diamant’s concern, and recovers rather quickly.
to that end: we know that diamant is much more fragile than he really lets on. it’s emphasised throughout the game. there are so many examples of this textually- explicitly, even!- that are very obvious in his character traits.
diamant, to leif in their a-rank bond: The truth is, I’m not as confident as I may seem. I’ve never told anyone that─not even Alcryst.
diamant, to ike in their a-rank bond: Improving my kingdom, surpassing my father as king… I’m not sure I can actually do all of that.
diamant and lucina’s a-rank bond conversation quite literally outlines the anxiety he has in regard to his kingdom’s welfare:
diamant: If Brodia’s remaining forces fall, the kingdom could be destroyed. I can’t bear that thought. lucina: I know how hard it is to leave soldiers behind. For their sake, we must claim a swift victory. Brodia will not fall into ruin, Diamant. Never will you suffer the same anguish that I did. diamant: Thank you, Lucina. That’s reassuring. You may never claim a throne…but you are a great leader.
and that’s not even every single instance in his bond conversations with the emblems, or in his supports.
and... wait... doesn’t that remind you of something?
alcryst, in his c-support with diamant: I can't offer an even match—my skills pale in comparison to yours—but I'll learn what I can. How am I supposed to win against the prince of Brodia? Yes, I am a Brodian prince, but I'm not THE Brodian prince. I'm not you, Diamant.
gee, it’s almost as though the anxiety runs in the family.
but what does this have to do with his a-support with alfred?
well, if there’s one thing that seems to set his anxiety off (aside from his perceived perfection, which is a topic i’ve already covered enough as it is already), it’s the potential of war between the different countries of elyos, and how that directly conflicts with his moral statement on how war is bad and only profits those in power. he can’t help but harp on about it every chance he gets:
framme: Prince Diamant… You said you wanted to bring peace to the world, but… Is that really true? Then why does Brodia keep attacking Elusia? I read the histories of both kingdoms. There are helpless citizens in Elusia that fear Brodia. When you talk about ending war, do you really mean conquering Elusia? Is that peace? diamant: Brodia…is a kingdom of warriors. It does have a regrettable history of seizing territory by force. And it is true that some people in Elusia have been hurt by─and have grown to hate─Brodia. That’s an undeniable part of my kingdom’s past, but I won’t let it be part of our future. It may not be easy, but I mean what I say. There will be change.
timerra: Hey, between you and me…do you think peace is really possible? diamant: Ah. That’s a big question…and one I often worry about myself. Ultimately, as leaders, I think it’s our duty to believe that peace is possible. If we won’t fight to secure that kind of future for our people, who will?
diamant: Brodia has a lot to answer for. Offering a token like that gem is the least I can do. ivy: It's true. Brodia has invaded our lands many times. I often wonder how my people would have fared without that suffering and bloodshed. diamant: My father was focused on our kingdom's affairs when he began expanding our territory by force. That singular focus is how things have always been done in Brodia...but that needs to change. My father is no longer here, but his influence remains. Change will take time. If there's an easier way, I haven't found it yet.
and so on.
okay, so why does he worry about breaking the non-aggression pact in the first place if he’s so adamant about keeping peace between the countries of elyos?? his support reads:
diamant: As you know, the kingdom of Brodia prioritizes military might above all else. Our kingdom is home to many ambitious people. That might explain those priorities. Our culture also teaches that it's honorable to gain things by force. Thanks to Queen Ève, our two kingdoms have signed a nonaggression pact. However... alfred: You're saying you can't promise it'll last. diamant: That’s right. alfred: What do you think will happen? diamant: I have my own hopes, but I won't just force them upon my kingdom. The will of my people must come first. I have to fight for whatever future serves them best.
so what’s the big deal? he practically says “hey, uh, yeah, about that non-aggression pact... sorry, but we can’t promise we won’t try to attack you in the future“
but i ask for you, dear reader, who’s gotten this far, to turn your attention to his and citrinne’s support chain.
citrinne: [the nobles are] eager for a response. I've been sent here to ask you directly about your stance on future military campaigns. These nobles are acquaintances of my family. As a noble myself, I can't ignore their demands. diamant: ... [diamant’s textbox pauses here before continuing to the following text] War is profitable. The nobility is expecting to line their pockets for years to come. I, on the other hand, do not intend to wage any wars during my reign as king. citrinne: I'm so glad to hear that. The nobles won't like it, but you can leave them to me.
this ends up getting diamant (and citrinne) into hot water in their b-support:
citrinne: The nobles did not care for your response. I must be cautious in my exchanges with you. Rumors are quickly spreading that my family has been colluding with Brodia’s future king.
naturally, this gets all nice and wrapped up in a cute little bow in their a-support:
diamant: Don’t panic. I didn’t mention you at all. I made it clear that I won’t wage any wars, but will prioritize a prosperous future for Brodia. That should put a stop to the rumors, right? No more whispers of collusion.
now, i know the focus here is on the accusation of collusion citrinne has levied at her, but i think it’s important to note that the nobles did not care for diamant’s response. furthermore, his end note explicitly discusses how the nobles dis not like diamant’s plan for brodia for the future:
As the new king of Brodia, Diamant ordered a halt to all invasions and worked to reform his people's attitudes on Elusia. Some nobles resisted Diamant at first, but his vision for the future earned their favor. By exporting ore, Brodia was able to shift to a booming, trade-based economy.
let me emphasise this: the nobility does NOT like diamant. at the very least, not at first. he even says how he regrets having to lean on the nobility for financial support... but unfortunately, he will have to burn that bridge when he gets there in terms of dealing with having this held over his own head as brodia’s crown prince.
diamant, to alfred in their c-support: I was drafting requests for funding to send to Brodia's nobles. Our military needs support. Any loans will be used as political leverage in the future. I'm worried...but out of options.
through this series of textual evidence, we are presented with two facts:
diamant is just as anxious as alcryst about his rule as king and how he envisions fostering peace as his father’s son (he’s just much more apt at hiding it than alcryst).
the nobility does not like him, in spite of his status as crown prince.
so, inevitably, when alfred steps wrong as says “yeah... we’re not gonna be best friends forever“, diamant is very prone to going into overdrive and overthinking this singular sentence... which snowballs into “i don’t think brodia will honour the non-aggression pact“.
diamant’s thoughts and worries about if he will actually be able to lead brodia into a peaceful future- profitable for his country, without relying upon being aggressive in war- quickly spiral out of control because, even if he knows logically it is not true, it doesn’t mean that he recognises it emotionally. alfred tries to reassure him, and it works, actually! it works by breaking him out of that spiral and reminds him that “not everyone wants war, and there will be plenty of opportunities to be loved by your people in peace times, too.“
alfred: I understand. I'm in the same tight spot. That said, everything'll be fine. You've got nothing to worry about. diamant: How can you be sure? alfred: Well, I mean... Everyone from Brodia seems so nice. I can't speak for the whole kingdom, but all the Brodians I've met were nice enough. I don't think they'd want a war over nothing. I think things are gonna work out. I trust the good folks of Brodia that way. diamant: You trust in the goodwill of others? Even the citizens of neighboring kingdoms? alfred: People are people, no matter where they're from. Is trusting in them so bad? diamant: Haha. No, it's not bad at all. In fact, trust might be the most important quality for a leader to have.
"people" can mean "the common people", but given how diamant struggles with the noble court... he likely means the nobles that want to use his need for funding as leverage against him, who want to pit him and citrinne against each others, who don't share his profitable future without war.
alfred can recognise that diamant is having a tough time worrying over his status as prince- about if he'll be liked, if he will rule well, if anything fleeting will ever last- because he understands him as a crown prince to another crown prince. they may not have the same exact struggle, but alfred intimately knows the impermanence of promises, legally binding or otherwise (this is a post for another time).
this is not out of character in the slightest, for either of them. this is a layered interaction exploring the exact minutiae of how both of them perceive the world: one through fleeting impermanence and acceptance, and the other through anxiety and sheer stubbornness,

Sometimes little kids get into fights.
Dimitri thought Claude bought that shirt as a joke and totally didn't expect it to actually work. Maybe neither did Claude? lol
I'm thinking Law wouldn't get the pink streaks in his hair until he got older. I don't think Claude and Dimitri would let bleach/dye that close to a toddler's eyes.
Finally remembered that Alfred's bangs are higher on the right / his left.
I always thought this "our get along shirt" meme came from an Animal Crossing fancomic (https://mobile.twitter.com/paper_machette/status/1243440854708019200). But turns out it comes from a Reddit photo of real life children in an "our get along shirt"???? (https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/get-along-shirt)
3/1/2023. Platinum Preppy fountain pen using Noodler's Ink. Colored with Copic and ShinHan Art Touch markers. Tiny fix with white-out.
It JUST turned past midnight and into March, but I want to get back into daily drawing with this new month, before something else happens in the day, again. So a quick doodle for daily drawing practice.

"S-Sorry... I hope I didn't offend you Prince Alfred. I promised myself that I'd pace myself with the drinking, and I just had one..."
Though maybe Alcryst should shut up before he makes things worse. Prince Alfred wants to toast—all Alcryst is doing at this point is delaying what he came here for. "I-I'll be back quickly! So that I don't waste any more of your time...!"
The sparkling water table looks rather dire: syrup stains the white tablecloth and drips onto the floor, and the students seem to crowd around the same bottles. Alcryst finds himself gravitating towards the end of the table, where the less-appreciated flavors reside. His eyes catch upon "blood orange." A strange name... but at the same time, kind of cool right? Feeling sponatenous, Alcryst adds a few pumps to his water and returns to Alfred.
"...It's a cool color, isn't it?" Alcryst asks, looking over at the prince in hopes that he agrees. With the syrup, his water has become a bright cherry red. "So, a toast... ah, there's so many things I want to toast to. Friendship, Firene-Brodia relations..."
