The iconic and instantly classic album, #PurpleRain, came out today 35 years ago. I remember one day, it was over 10 years ago, a bunch of us were just hanging out in an empty apartment with some drinks and a CD player. My adult niece and self professed music snob (she worked at major music store in NYC when she was in college there) later commented about that day. "Everyone there was about the same age [but her] but of all different backgrounds: Latino, Asian, White. You played Purple Rain from start to finish. You all knew the words and the order of the songs! And acted out some of the scenes from the movie while singing along with Prince! (Think Darling Nikki) I've never seen such a diverse group of people know one album so well!" #Prince and his music transcended all genres, genders, backgrounds of any type (ethnic, socio-economic, political), shoot even generations (mama was fan too). In 1984, he was not the rock star to most of us quite yet, but he knew his genius would permeate millions of our minds, hearts and souls. Regrann from @officialpaisleypark - #PrinceHistory: @Prince and @chakaikhan had a long and beautiful friendship that resulted in several significant musical collaborations. Both artists were signed to Warner Bros. in the late 1970s (Prince in 1976 and Chaka in 1978), and were aware of each other long before they met. Prince would tell Chaka Khan that he had a poster of her on his wall, and she was immediately drawn to his song “I Feel For You” while listening to his debut album, For You. Chaka recently revealed to Billboard that she ended up meeting Prince in a very funny way – he called her up and set up a meeting, all while pretending to be Sly Stone. "He called me at my hotel -- I was and still am very good friends with Sly Stone. He knew that, I guess, 'cause he mimicked Sly's voice completely. I was completely fooled," Khan said. "He said 'this is Sly, I'm down at Electric Ladyland.' 'OK, I'll be right down!' And that's how he got me down to the studio. I get there and there's nobody there except for one little guy in this room with a guitar. And I said 'Do you know where Sly is?' He said to me, 'Hi, I'm Prince, I called you.' I was very pissed. And that's how we met." She would end up recording her own version of “I Feel For You” for her 1984 album of the same name, enlisting special guests Stevie Wonder and Grandmaster Melle Mel to perform on the song. Her version was a runaway success: it stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for 26 weeks, and was one of Billboard’s five biggest pop songs of 1985. It would also earn Prince and Chaka Khan a Grammy Award in 1985 for Best R&B Song. Their collaboration would continue for decades. In 1998, Chaka signed to NPG Records and visited Paisley Park to record an album with Prince, “Come 2 My House,” which features many special guests who were regulars at the Park in that time: the NPG’s Michael Bland, Kirk Johnson, Marva King, and Rhonda Smith, the Hornheads, and Sly and the Family Stone’s Larry Graham. @Regrann from @officialpaisleypark - #PrinceHistory: Ahead of #IndependenceDay, we’re saluting the classic @prince and @therevolution song “America,” which was released on April 22, 1985 on the album Around the World in a Day. The song was made available in several lengths, at the recommendation of Warner Bros., who were hoping to retain many of the fans Prince won over with his album and film #PurpleRain. The single version of “America” was only 3:40 long, but the original version recorded in late 1984 at the Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in #EdenPrairie stretched to over 20 minutes, and was eventually released as a 12-inch. A third 10-minute live version was captured in the music video for “America,” which was filmed at Théâtre de Verdure in Nice, France, where Prince was shooting the film Under the Cherry Moon. The high-energy, aerobic video captures the Revolution at the top of their game, and Prince goes from playing the guitar to dancing to taking over Bobby Z’s drum kit to show off his rhythmic abilities. The song heavily references the classic patriotic song “America the Beautiful,” and in true Prince fashion it contrasts the hopeful melody of that song with some of the darker realities faced by American citizens in the 1980s. Who could forget this moment in PrinceHistory? It was 26 years ago today that Prince and the NewPowerGeneration performed “Gett Off” on the MTV Video Music Awards, and he debuted his unforgettable yellow derrière-exposing suit on live television. Speaking to the audience at this year’s Celebration2017, designer Stacia Lang Design recalled the process of creating this historic outfit vividly. Prince had given his secretary instructions to give to Stacia for his Video Music Awards outfit, and the secretary told Stacia she “had better sit down” before hearing the three specific ideas he had: “It had to be yellow, it had to be lace, and it had to have the butt out,” Stacia recalled. She worked up a few different options based on those concise directions, and had an especially memorable meeting with Prince to show him her ideas. “I had created two drawings, one with more exposure on the back side and one with less,” she remembered. “Without saying a word, he took a pencil and drew an ‘X’ through the one with more exposure. And that was it.” For the VMAs performance, Prince paired his yellow lace suit with a matching yellow Cloud guitar. The “Gett Out” performance came just a month before the release of his debut album with the New Power Generation, Diamonds and Pearls, which would hit stores on October 1, 1991 - (Paisley Park)
