Have you guys ever seen the show Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders? I believe it was Princess Starla in some other places! I remembered seeing it as a kid, and rewatched the first couple eps on youtube fairly recently! The world is full of reboots right now, but I actually feel like this would work super well for one, since it's got a lot of fun elements to it that could be explored a little more deeply.

Anyway, all that to say I was fiddling with "updating" the lead, cuz I think she looks cute but her clothes are... well. Very 90's toyetic. I wanted to keep a lot of the same feel and look while making the aesthetics a bit more to my taste. The result is above, with the reference below! I don't think she was quite that vibrant in the show but it's what I ended up working from.

the way no one has beaten Arwen when it comes to a otp oh they are so powerful no one ever loved anyone each other more then the way Arthur loves Gwen and vice versa and the way they are 10+ year old ship yet no one has ever been able to top them and especially not as period drama ship that’s just how unmatched Arwen

the way that Arwen scene in the ocean is permanently engraved in me and everyone minds forever arthur and Gwen words their with all my heart had a whole nation by the throat when it was going you’ll hear people sayin referencing that even had them use those lines for their other ships that could never ever come close or ever be in the same air, league or level as ARWEN oh they were insane for that and the whole of Merlin their love story was magical and epic and had us all feel like we was on crack bc of the buzz serotonin it gave us back in 2010s

Here have some previous Mermay art I made of another cartoon obsession of mine: Princess Gwenevere/Starla and the Jewel Riders

I think one of the main reasons I struggled to really love gwen and Arthurs relationship at first was because of how we saw their relationship with others. Specifically, how clumsy and giddy gwen was while she had a crush on merlin. She was practically tripping over her own feet anytime she saw him, always stumbling on her words and she always looked at him like he was the sun, and though overtime we see parts of this in her and arthurs relationship we dont see it as sudden as we do with her and merlin at the start.

Like they began the series saying “hey! This is gwen. She crystal clearly has a crush on merlin and is so bad at hiding it and is struggling to rein these kind of emotions in!” To then move onto a much more lowkey love for arthur.

Which, I do love as arguably this is because she felt she had no chance with arthur and almost didnt let herself fully feel these emotions fully, but we still didnt see the same clumsy love (?) that she showed in s1 for merlin at any point really, not for arthur or and only a bit with lancelot, who she had much more of a chance with.

Also this isnt me saying she didnt like them, she absolutely loved them, and I get she grows as a character especially after her fathers death etc and becomes more emotionally mature and locks away some of her feelings, I just find it interesting we never really got to see that side of gwen again. Like they really said “hey! This is what she looks like when she really really likes a guy!!!” And then proceeds to never show that side of her again with any of her possible love interests.

Plus we see arthur literally say to gwens face I think about running away to a farm and taking only merlin and then we watch them dreamily gaze into each others eyes for 5 seasons.

Conclusion: they made merlin too lovable and now everyones emotions for each other aside from him seem a lot more dulled down

And I am not developing more it’s hilarious – just that I know, somewhere in the universe, Cloudcuckoolander MC is giving me a thumb up in approval ♪

Yeah... I'm gonna go lie down now. Take a wee bit of a break before I start working on the second part of Chapter 2.

My Princess Starla/Gwenevere collection! Most of it is from my childhood. Drake and Fallon with the little dragon are garage sales finds (too bad her hair are cut and his mask is missing!) through the years. ShadowSong is a custom I made with a spare Moondance, I'm really proud of him. Now I just need Lady Kale and I’ll be happy ^^
