I can't lie, being an Arthur-romancer and flirting with him in Camelot while not knowing about his relationship status does make me feel a bit guilty 😔 Not enough to stop, of course, but I guess a little bit of past life homewrecking is nothing compared to the crimes MC can commit.
Hey, for all you know you could be Guinevere! Or Guinevere and Arthur could have a secretly open marriage. Or Guinevere could just be a skank having an affair with half of Camelot. Or Arthur could be secretly losing his shit that Camelot MC is flirting with him.

So many ways this could turn out!

50. Writer's preference - "And what if it is not you?"
The barb stung and Arthur turned away as quickly as if she had struck him.
These walks had become something of a tradition between the Prince and former Princess over the rolling weeks. With the out of doors near unpassable, Arthur's mornings had shifted to a shorter indoor practice before dawn, followed by a brief repast and then a stroll through the Orangery with the Lady Aria. Though they still argued as often as they didn't, there was something free and flowing in these conversations -- a strange sense that no subject was off limits...And that every single one was somehow taboo. It was perhaps true that they had each been raised as royalty, but it seemed their worlds could not have been more different.
Today, the subject had fallen to that all-encompassing theme of his life, the most pressing topic in the empire, and the one least likely ever to be openly addressed: Roderick's line of succession. It was an ache in his gut, this, a hill he had run up all his childhood only to find a sheer rockface confronting him. Now, scrambling for footholds in the brutal cliffside, it was a race to the top against those he loved most -- a climb now far too high to risk the drop. It was success or the death of all meaning. But what was he to do? Throw his siblings from the sides? They too held on by meager fingertips and he could not bear to think of them dashed against the teeth of the unforgiving stone so far below.
Arthur's jaw clenched. He kept her pace, but he no longer looked at her as she spoke; heard her only as if from a great distance. What was there to say? Yet, her last words burned, searing like vinegar in his cuts, and he turned sharply towards her, a rush sounding in his head.
"What? You favor someone else?" he demanded, all effort at bluster or calm stripped away. Surprise seemed to register in his face and, pressing his eyes shut, he shook his head, realizing she meant this only as rhetoric and, with a look of defeat, he sighed; shook his head. "How should I know? It would be the end for me."
He didn't look at her, now, gaze straying upwards towards the gently nodding trees, branches heavy and sagging with fruit. He thought of the tart-sweet of them, tawny and opening with a kind of crack. Fibrous chambers of juice attended the tiny seeds at the center and this, then, was life. Even trees limned their children with sweet cushions against the harsh reality of the world around them. When he laughed, it was a bitter sound.
Sighing, Arthur shook his head. "Aria, I--" but he stopped. He'd not said her name so baldly before and he gestured, helpless, voice trapped within his throat.
Her eyes were dark: not mere chocolate, but something else as if the sea had leaked into them and tossed against stormy shores within her mind. Her face was set, but he could not read it. He searched for something written there, something designed for him to read: he wanted it. He knew the message he wished to read. A very simple message. He wanted to read it again and again, see it roiling within the storm of her eyes. But there was nothing. She was no harbor. She was, perhaps, another deathly drop.
Aria lifted her chin. "Go on."
"I don't know what will happen if my father chooses someone else any more than you do. But I do know I will be a threat to whoever is chosen, simply for having been in the running, and..."
And if it were Edmund who were selected, whom Arthur regarded as the most likely alternative, he would not expect to long outlive his father -- or even his father's choice. Enemies of the House of Calainon had a way of disappearing. Arthur was not altogether certain they even lifted a finger: they were witches, after all. Likely, all they needed do was wish for a thing, and their dark magic did the rest. Edmund might not wish him gone, perhaps...but Amira would not hesitate. He could not help but think that would make for a horrible ending, all the demons of hell rising at her command. His would be a silent end, he had no doubt, yet he knew, too, that if it were by Amira's hand, he would die howling.
If Aria had said something else, Arthur had not heard it. At last, she said: "And what if the Emperor doesn't choose? What happens to us all, then?"
Arthur stopped short, and Aria beside him. "Then it'd be war."
He walked out without another word.

will never get over how much genuine trust and stability Gwen and Arthur afforded each other in their relationship even before they were married
the parallel from ‘Castle of Fyrien’ and ‘Lamia’ is my favorite
from Merlin having to persuade Gwen to tell Arthur about what was troubling her, and Arthur immediately soothing her worries with “You did the right thing. Your brother will come to no harm I promise.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and after the whole ordeal, when Gwen summons the courage to thank him, still burdened by the fact why he went to so many pains to help her, he quietly reassures her with her own words:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
just like he had in ‘Queen of Hearts’- Arthur is quick to remind Gwen that he would give his love, pains and life for her, endlessly and without a second thought.
and then in s4 when the two are on much steadier ground, content in the future they want together and within Camelot.
when Gwen finds Mary distressed and terrified at her door, she immediately runs to the only person she knows can steady her every worry: Arthur (who just so happens to be the King and has every resource at his disposal but that’s a plus 🤭)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
arwen are in their element here, co-ruling and alleviating their people’s troubles, even before Gwen had ascended the throne.
Their relationship is built on trust and never faltered, it’s built on Arthur’s small glances in Gwen’s direction to ensure he’s doing the right thing, and her soft touches at his side. It’s present every time Gwen worries she’s bringing him trouble, borne from a self-realiance she learned early, and his easy smiles when he patiently reminds her that her worries are all he cares about, and nothing could be insurmountable when it came to them, facing it together 💗

I watched Castlevania: Nocturne and saw this "white dude with a black/BIPOC girlfriend" (Annette in this case) again I'd seen in many other shows. Why do the creators choose a female character to be BIPOC but ALWAYS keep the main character a plain white dude with, most of the time, no interesting characteristics?
Annette
Tumblr media
It's not just that they want to add more diversity, it's just that they want to kill two rabbits with one bullet:
—Adding a female character;
—Adding a BIPOC character.
Bonus points if that character is also queer. Sometimes they make a black guy and not a female but they also make him gay.
But they would literally never make the main character a black woman, because the main character is always a white dude??
More examples of this:
Annabeth Chase.
I love the actress and she did great. But why wouldn't the creators make Percy black? Black Percy is very popular in fandom. Oh, right, because he's a male main character and we can't let him to be black, so let's make the girl black. "I mean, we should be more practical, right?? We should use our recourses right but we also want to be more inclusive. We already have a female character, there is no room for another character just to be a BIPOC so let's make HER a black character".
I don't care that Percy is a white boy in the books, Annabeth is also a white girl but why do you care about the male main character's race more about the other's?
Tumblr media
Hermione Granger.
Same as for Annabeth, they just wanted to have at least one black character but they would NEVER cast a black person for Harry and Ron. Because these two characters are two white dude with their own chemistry.
Tumblr media
Guinevere Pendragon.
My poor little girl, I wish she had more love from the fandom. But the truth is, the creators AND the fans are so obsessed over two white dudes that none of them give enough attention to Guinevere. There is literally "anti-gwen" stuff going on inside of fandom. And people would ship Arthur with literally every white girl (or Merlin) but never with his WIFE WHOM HE LOVES IN THE SHOW. Because she's a black woman love interes to our "precious little white male main character". They would never make Arthur or Merlin black.
Tumblr media
Inej Ghafa.
Can't say much about her, I just started watching Shadow and Bone. But as soon as I saw that she is supposed to be a love interest to the main white male character Kaz, I rolled my eyes.
Tumblr media
Laena Velaryon and Baela Targaryen.
Mother and daughter. Wife and betrothed. It's an interesting choice to make all the Velaryons BIPOC but it was supposed to backfire because the Targaryens would be at least partially black, too (Aenys's wife, Alyssa, was Velaryon, and it's their lineage that survived). But no, of course they wouldn't make Daemon and Jace black or BIPOC, they have to be two white dudes. The creators literally had a chance to make Jace black, because in the books his legitimacy was questioned only by "the greens" and could be just rumours. Yes, Laenor is gay, but you are telling me he had no chance, especially when Addam (in the books) was supposed to be his bastard? (Laenor is half Targaryen, unlike Corlys, and Laenor's bastard could be dragonriders).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honorary mentions (because I'm tired):
Elle Argent.
Technically, she is a trans woman which only adds bonus points in making her character. Because our main characters are two white dudes.
Tumblr media
Eric Effiong.
He's a gay black man, our main white character's best friend. Though, I do appreciate that he has a lot of screen time unlike most of the characters I mentioned.
Tumblr media
Rose Weasley.
Because the main characters are two white boys and she's the only female character. (I cannot attach a photo of her because of the limits per post but you can see her with Hermione)
Starfire.
I know she's technically not a human. But the actress playing her is BIPOC. The creators have no balls to make Dick Grayson a black character.
Tumblr media
I do not hate those characters, I love all of them. And I am a person of colour who is just tired of seeing how the creators are trying so much to include more BIPOC characters but they also try SO HARD to NOT cast for the main male character a black/BIPOC actor. Because they want to keep the main male character a white person and I have literally no idea why.
Make Percy Jackson black!! Make Merlin black!! Make Trevor Belmont black!! Why does it always have to be a female character of colour???

The Banners of House Varmont
note: there may be more. the queens would have their own badges, as well, as would the late empress (tho likely that's now what guin is using, i'd think?), and cassandra likely has use of her mom's and/or arthur's with cadency marks, but since she's an imperial princess, and not just a royal princess, roderick would def ok her usage of her own badge, as well, though that's usually reserved for sons, heirs, and titled warriors, it is likely that guin, cassandra, and each of the queens, as well as the late empress, has at least one unit who fights in their honor given that roderick's empire is v much a military operation, so yeah! basically there may be as many as four other varmont insignias out there, but these are the big five! also pls note that i am convinced roderick has given each of his children an obscene number of titltes to bandy abt (tho not so many as he has!) in order to showcase their importance as his children, but we'll say these are perhaps shortened, more casual titles for astaira ;D

Ah someone else who has discovered the joys of Camelot (1967) a movie that I am completely normal about. Have you watched it? Because the delivery of the lines is everything and if you need someone to talk to about it I am, once again, completely normal about it. The scene where Lancelot and Arthur first meet?? A masterpiece in sharing a single braincell. And don't even get me started on the way Guenevere first treats Lancelot "have you jousted with humility lately". It's unapologetically at the top of my Arthuriana movie rank list and has gotten me to reread The Once and Future King
I have not watched the film yet!
I've been listening to the original cast recording on Spotify but, most importantly, I've read the book of the original Broadway production (1960 libretto) and I love it?? It's a delightful little read on its own, even without having watched the musical. (I want other people to read it please it's very funny I promise)
I guess the 1967 film script won't be identical to the libretto but I assume it's fairly similar.
The scene where Lancelot meets Arthur was hilarious it made me laugh out loud. Lancelot utter puzzlement ("Gone a-Maying, Your Majesty??"). Arthur's sudden self-consciousness.
And don't even get me started on the way Guenevere first treats Lancelot "have you jousted with humility lately"
I know!! Lancelot's grating self-righteousness coupled with his complete lack of self-awareness is so funny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I loved the gradual tone shift. It starts out so silly and the tragedy sneaks up on you — I thought Guinevere and Lancelot's affair might be played for laughs with an oblivious Arthur but no, it turns out he's fully aware of what's going on and he's forced to watch it unfold because he's powerless to stop it? and he loves them both and doesn't want any harm to come to them even as they betray him??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(He continues talking, looking from one to the other, feverishly — painfully) — Excuse me??
and King Pellinore is hilarious, he enters the scene wearing a monocle followed by a little mongrel named Horrid and talking like a character from a P. G. Wodehouse's novel. Extremely validating because when I read that chapter in Le Morte d'Arthur in which King Pellinore first makes an appearance my first question was "is he meant to be this funny?" and the answer from this script is a resounding YES.
I think I might perhaps watch the 1968 stage production first, merely because it's available for free on Youtube (at least in the UK).
I might try hunting for a free streaming link to the 1967 film, though I don't mind renting it if I can't find it.

How messy would it be if the PC’s incarnation was Guinevere.. wait is that an option? Ah it’s probably a spoiler, but hypothetical question nonetheless: how would Arthur react to being romanced by a PC who was a Guinevere reincarnation?
Tumblr media
Well, that would depend nearly entirely upon the MC in question considering their actions (as Guinevere MC) could've taken the past relationship with Arthur in wildly different directions.
If Guinevere MC was the type to cuck Arthur with Lancelot/Mordred/Edern/Ywain etc than good luck trying to rekindle that relationship. If MC was potentially a Guinevere that remained loyal until the end, then that'd be a huge head start on romancing him.
After all, Guinevere and Arthur were married like 50 years or so.

as someone who is very very very in tune to how characters refer to each other or maybe more generally, names, and the power of them, it is such a shame the merlin creators didn’t do Something More with emrys. it’s a title as much as it is a name and it would’ve been soooo delicious if when merlin becomes more accustomed to his power, the more his name fits like a name than a title or just somethinggggggg idk

Morgana: People aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. Bastard coated bastards with bastard filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bubble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine. Merlin: Arthur: Uther: Some random noble: that one servant who is always eavesdropping: Gwen: me? Morgana: not you Gwen. Light of my life. Sunshine to my darkness. Never you. Morgana: obviously I was talking about Arthur
