Take the Cloakbrand fanfiction I wrote for example. I know for a fact it is BEAUTIFULLY written. I have gotten nothing but compliments from the few who actually read it and one of the comfort scenes nearly made one of my friends burst out crying at work - someone who notably struggles to cry in front of anyone, working in the middle of a mall. I take immense pride in what I created, knowing that I skillfully set the stage for platonic intimacy and platonic intimacy alone. I wrote Mark and Jack as siblings the way best friends become siblings. When the words "best friend" isn't enough to describe your connection anymore.

The androids from the New Misfits merch drop, with the only depiction of them being held hands and the promise to always find each other as they're being sent into the incinerator - I wrote that as PLATONIC.

And as grateful as I am for the one person who proofread it - the friend who works at a mall - because I was able to edit our anything that read as suggestive, I can't deny how it made my innards sink and twist every time they found a spot.

I can't deny that it hurts knowing there are people who will read things like that and be wildly upset that there's no "payoff". That just because they don't make out and bang that means all of this was wasted and for nothing.

The behavior of the characters was modeled off their real life counterparts, sure, but also off of the most intimate relationship I've ever had. And no, it wasn't the one time I tried dating someone (every moment after the initial agreement felt like I was in panic mode trying to find a way out. It was terrible and I'm never doing it again).

That was a friendship where they've fallen asleep in my arms, where we'd cuddle for hours without shame, where we'd talk every day and everything was just simply better when we did it together.

I never once wanted to kiss him. I've never once wanted to get high and fuck the night away.

Never once. And that was the strongest connection I've ever had with someone.

And it's devastating that connections as wonderful as that are boiled down to being "just" friends.

Currently reading a neat book called Becoming Dangerous that's a collection of essays on queer community, witchcraft, and rebellion, and I just. Pretty much every single essay so far focuses on sex in one way or another.

And I get it, that's a core aspect to the lives of a *lot* of people, no hate to them, but I think the problem for me is that sexual relationships are taught to really be the only way you can be emotionally close to someone. It's the only way community can really happen.

For all the love of found family tropes, people in the wild will always be assumed to be dating, if not fucking, if not relatives, all before they're possibly considered friends.

And being friends is treated like the budding flower of "something more". I can still remember how it stung to know that one of my incredibly queer friends admitted to struggling with understanding platonic relationships and intimacy. I remember the surging frustration and anger when my mother told her boyfriend I was having a sleepover and the boyfriend asked if it was a sleepover or a Sleepover wink wink nudge nudge.

Because you're never "just" friends, right? It always has to be the groundwork for "something more".

Storms forbid you enjoy the company of someone you're not romantically and/or sexually involved with.

as someone who was briefly a woman of color in stem (im now a man of color in a pink collar job #thriving) i often wonderrrr if the avatar was empowering to alma in the workplace. when i was a stem fem my superiors didn't take me seriously when i met with them in person, and their treatment of me noticeably shifted when i started meeting with them through zoom during covid and was no longer physically a foot below them and when my asian features were somewhat obscured by a shitty webcam. also i have an anecdote from a friend whose racist family member was IN LOVE with netytiri until he realized she was portrayed by a black woman. when he realized she was zoe saldana under the blue cgi he reacted like he'd been catfished.

in a meta sense i think white guys see black woman characters very differently through the lens of a na'vi or avatar body and i wonder if that might extend in-universe.

obviously spending all her time in the avatar was an unhealthy way of coping with identity issues but i wonder if those identity issues had anything to do with how she was treated in the RDA as a black woman. plus we don't know how tall alma is because this is a video game but i think she's extremely 5 foot coded and regardless physically towering over men who metaphorically look down on you i think would probably be an ego boost.

i'd like to believe Human racism and sexism aren't as big of a problem by 2154 but if they werent ingrained into the fabric of the culture i think they wouldnt be doing any of that shit to pandora in the first place like i have no evidence but i imagine an antiracist culture probably would not genocide and colonize a species of indigenous-coded blue alien people. also the way mercer talks about the humanities reeks of scott yenorism

Everything was made from scratch. Including the little lines in the background of both cards (including the white designs on the arrow button), the arrow, AND the Jedi Order symbol!

Searcher tool resource!

Hey all! With some help from @autistic-sidestep, I've been working on this tool (and some associated sorting and filing of stuff I am unable and unwilling to share publicly) for about six months now? Tumblr is awful to find things on and I like being able to find information.

The upshot is, this is a tool written in C# to search and filter json files constructed from a tumblr blog in a way that is more user friendly than simply ctrl+f-ing through a large document, allowing for filtering on multiple tags or terms. For our purposes, Fallen Hero's tumblr specifically.

To use this

Download the zip file in the drive and unzip it. You may have to tell your antivirus it's okay (I am just some guy on the internet with free time not an antivirus recognized developer and you SHOULD be cautious of random files on the internet etc etc).

You'll also need to add the data it's looking for, which has been Aurrie's project for the last couple of months! They shared the files over here, and you need to place them in the Data folder. The files you want read in must have names that start with "Tumblr_" and end with ".json".

Then run the .exe file. If you don't already have the .Net framework this uses to run, it'll point you to where to download it.

There's further instructions on how to use it in both the readme file and once you have the program running, but feel free to reach out to me if you're running into any issues!

This is, unfortunately, Windows only - I may work out how to make a mac version at,, some point, but I initially made this for Just Myself and I don't have a mac and did not consider it. You may be able to make it run with Wine or Mono, but I haven't tested that or anything.

As a sidebar, there's no reason you couldn't use this with other .json files with the same format as the ones Aurrie made, so if anyone's wanting to use this for other similarly unsearchable blogs (all of them. tumblr does not have a functional search system.) we used this tool to scrape the blog, which is a good starting point and you're welcome to reach out to me if you have questions!
