Since the chances of other populated worlds have become more and more have increased, I think its important we put some work into the technology.

JWST recently spotted some gas on K2-18b, leading to speculations about more life on the planet. I think if we took more time into actually advancing it and not throwing shit up there and wishing for the best (COUGH hubble mirror flaw COUGH) we couldve found this sooner.

Btw I think Brave is also a Chromium-based browser so it is still feeding information to Chrome sources? Opera GX is also Chromium-based and linked to cryptocurrency bullshit, as I recall. My point being, check to make sure that whatever you switch to from Chrome isn't just a reskin of Chrome. Personally, I've been using Firefox for the last few yesrs and it's been working great for me.

DuckDuckGo as a search engine is okay, but noticeably less sophisticated/built-up than Google. I still use Google Images especially, since DuckDuckGo's image base doesn't seem to be half as comprehensive-- and that's despite the fact that Google loves to show me AI-generated garbage.

Obsidian has some form-based limitations, since it's a glorified UI for your computer's notepad program, but it works great for making notes, and the theme is very customizable.

Can't speak for Cryptpad or Ellipsus, but LibreOffice does have a pretty confusing and unintuitive UI (but take my word with the understanding that I never really learned the full ins and outs of Word). Libre has a great suite of free programs that mimic the functions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.-- but bear in mind that while the raw functionality should be roughly equivalent, there are probably going to be issues in translation. Especially re: formatting, which is a pretty big problem for a visual medium like slideshows.

(Like, if you make a slideshow in Libre's Impress program, you should check it head to toe if you try to convert it to a PowerPoint or Google Slides-readable presentation. But honestly, same thing for converting a Google Slide into PowerPoint. In general, it's never entirely safe to convert a format-critical document and not check the converted file over for issues.)

Anyways! Go forth and experiment with independent alternatives to mainstream programs that take advantage of their monopoly on the industry to mine you for data. But like. 1) Expect growing pains, and 2) Check to make sure the independent alternative isn't using the proprietary skeleton of the mainstream program you were trying to escape.

Carlisle's voice carried across two rooms from the kitchen where he was speaking with Esme about their daughter's impromptu call for a family meeting. She had refused to tell any of them what the meeting was about and not even Alice’s prodding at Mia’s future had given them a clue—in fact, Alice’s attempts and the rest of their siblings’ relentless questions had led only to Mia banishing them all from the living room until their scheduled meeting time. 

Since his tone was light, Mia didn’t offer much consideration to her father’s threat as she continued working on her powerpoint presentation—so far she’d amassed twelve slides outlining various college programs she’d received acceptances to, but she wasn’t quite finished yet. 

“What are you working on?”

“Dad!” Mia shouted and scrambled to catch her laptop as it slipped toward the floor when Carlisle suddenly appeared in front of her. Carlisle’s hands steadied the device before Mia could get a proper hold and he placed it back into her lap without even glancing at the presentation on the screen. 

It was refreshing, the respect and consideration Carlisle showed to her in honoring her privacy, and suddenly Mia wasn’t interested in keeping her news secret anymore—not from her father, at least.

Mia scooted over on the couch, sitting up straight and repositioning the computer on her lap so Carlisle could sit beside her. “You want a preview?”

Hiii!^^ I did the PowerPoint presentation about vocaloid for my friends today, and since I told you I'd tell you how it went, here I am. Btw my presentation was 30 slides long and lasted an entire hour

I introduced them to the Vocaloid program and voicebanks, which they understood with much more ease than I was expecting them to, which makes me feel better about my way of explaining things lol! I also talked a bit about UTAU, CeVIO and Synth-V

I talked a bit about Crypton Future Media but just the bare bones and Piapro Studio, then I talked about Miku and the other CRYPTONloids, and they all found it very bizarre that one of Luka's character items is a tuna and they refuse to understand it (lmao Hello, Worker started playing as I started writing this). I told them to not look for logic in vocaloid fans' mindset

They are also all very saddened by the fact that character items aren't really a thing for new vocaloids anymore, and every time I introduced a new vocaloid they started debating on what their character item should be, which was really fun. They think SeeU should have a Halloween pumpkin, and Kaai Yuki should have apples

Also I wrote this down because I knew you'd like it: one of my friends said Lily looks really badass, and like she belongs in a game fighting off monsters

I also talked a bit about concerts, mainly NicoNico Cho Parties, Snow Miku, Miku Expo, Magical Mirai, the IA concerts and VSinger Live, but I also snuck in a comment about Miku With You, which made them think of how cool an interactive concert with Miku would be, like the Disneyland attraction where you talk to that turtle from Finding Nemo and the turtle talks back to you

And then finally I talked a bit about producers, and went over the most influential ones imo, which were ryo, DECO*27, wowaka, hachi, Giga and neru. I'll be honest, I really debated on whether I should have included those last two, but I was too lazy to delete those slides and figured eh, let's just leave them in

But yeah, it was really fun, a lot longer than I planned for it to be lol They had many questions and comments, but it was nice because it felt like they were genuinely paying attention and stuff, so it was awesome

Hi! Super dumb question here but you were the first fic writer I could think of who might have some tips.

How do you manage and organize all of your WIPs? All of mine are in my notes app but the tagging system sucks on iPhones and I’ve had to use folders inside of folders for everything.

Part of me wishes so desperately that Ao3 didn’t delete drafts after 30 days because it’s the only way I’ve been able to tag things properly. These days I’m just, “Do I put this in my enemies to lovers folder first or the soulmates one??? Do I have a folder in my AUs folder for coffee shop meet-cute that also has a Lila takedown plot??”

oh god oh god, anon, my organization skills are probably the worst ever, but i'll still share what i have and hopefully it'll help? maybe? hopefullyyyyy?

i personally write using google docs because i'm always constantly switching between computers and i write on my phone too when i'm on the train to school!! i don't need much, honestly, and i don't enjoy having a grammar editor that's constantly reading my stuff (grammarly is on such thin ice with me, yelling at me for putting ellipses in the wrong places) so just a simple blank screen with nothing fancy is how i do it. i know a lot of people use scrivener but it's not free and i am Very Much Not in Any Way Financially Able To Buy A Program when google docs works just fine, so i don't mind it!

i like having my stuff available, and docs is always really helpful. my drive looks like a mess outside of my Miraculous folder-- it looks like a scrapbook with all the random images and powerpoints for school saved, but i have a folder (with a very hidden name of "FF" just in case i were to have to open my drive in front of a projector screen) but inside it, i organize all of my fics like this:

if it's an idea i have that i'm not sure if i want to develop into something bigger, it goes into the oneshots folder. if i like it a lot and actually start writing it (and am interested,) then it gets it's own folder!!! but the downside is, some of these i haven't touched in years...

i have a lot of earlier fics for miraculous (like, before i even decided that writing was a thing i wanted to do) but i didn't want to throw them away, so they got put into the reject pile. the stories were... weird. they didn't go anywhere, which i probably just didn't know What to write about, but they're saved (forever!)

don't let this organization fool you, though. i have about 80 different google documents in the dl folder DX

as for tagging, i don't really think of the tags until i'm in ao3 to begin with. i actually don't have a lot of wips that i'm trying to keep track of!! in the oneshots folder, i just write the general idea at the top of the document, and let it go from there-- that way i don't have to worry about if i forgot a key element to the story, or something of the sort.

for example, if i were the one organizing your coffee-shop AU takedown with lila, i would label it by name! maybe if i needed to do some planning, i'd make a folder inside the oneshots folder (assuming it won't be a 100k+ fic at the end) so i could keep my notes organized for it!! or bring it out and give it it's own folder outside the oneshots folder!!! (which btw let me just say the fic sounds like an AMAZING story and i 100% want to read it) (just putting that out there)

Do people not realize you can be multifaceted? I know a lady from my hometown who is a huge Trump supporter 🤮 and prides herself on being a conservative Christian. But she took the large inheritance her grandparents left her and started a foundation in my town to help women escaping abusive relationships. She teaches them basic computer skills like making a resume, PowerPoint, Microsoft office and Word and teaches them how to fill out applications for jobs online. That way when they leave the shelter, they can get a job to support themselves and their families and helps them apply for government programs to help feed their kids. A huge reason many women stay in abusive relationships is because they aren’t financially able to leave. This woman helps soooo many women, but she’s also a gross Trump supporter. Karlie can be a bad friend and Josh’s family can be gross, and they can be too chicken to stand up to Jared and ivanka and his parents, but Kwk can be a wonderful program. Just like kimye are horrible people, but when they do give money to a good cause, like with George Floyd’s children, it will help his kids and I’m glad, but Kanye is still horrible (btw I’m not putting Karlie in the same category as Kanye or Kim, but ykwim) Like, I don’t get how people genuinely don’t comprehend these things 🤷‍♀️

I either get gifs from stim blogs, Giphy, and Google Images, or I make my own gifs. I get the videos for my gifs from Instagram mostly because I followed a lot of stimmy-type pages. YouTube is also a good place to get gifs from!

To make the gifs, you have to download the videos first, which you can do at these websites:

Then, you have to make the gifs from the videos, which you can do here:

Make sure your gifs are squares btw. Most gifs from an Instagram video are square, but sometimes they aren’t and you have to crop them into a square; you can do that on EZgif! Also, sometimes when you try to save a gif from a blog, it might save as a WEBP file, which you have to convert to a gif. You can use EZgif for that as well, or you can go to this website (x).

As for the pride flags that I put in the middle of my moodboards, I have damn near every more commonly known pride flag saved already lmao. So I just resize them into squares using Microsoft PowerPoint or Word, which probably sounds weird, but it’s because I can evenly size it with those programs because you can see how many inches it is on all sides. And the base banners (meaning without the writing and hearts on them), I do the same way. I make the combo flags and combo banners using the same programs, too. And then I paste them into Paint and save them. As for the completed banners, I do those in PowerPoint so I can make sure everything is even on them. There’s probably like.... way, way easier ways to do the banners and images, but that’s just what I do because it’s easier for me lmao.

And the gradient text, you already know how to do! As for the colorful links, I just take the colors from the gradient to color the hearts for my links lol. Oh, and make sure you link the posts before you start messing with the HTML to make the gradient; it’s a lot easier than properly manually inserting the links into the HTML.

Just saw Avengers: Endgame

And I have some Questions about the ending.

First off, I want to mention that I was spoiled for Steve Rogers’ ending because SOME PEOPLE posted reaction fics on opening day and put the major spoiler in the first sentence of their fic summary, which AO3 then delivered straight to my unsuspecting email inbox. I was avoiding Tumblr altogether as well as Marvel-related threads on other social media sites, but I was not on guard against my own email. Please don’t put spoilers in your fic summaries on the first day, yeah?

 Spoilers of my own follow:

Somebody tell me HOW THE FRICK time travel works in the MCU??? They go on about how changes in the past won’t affect the present, but I’m gonna need a much more detailed explanation for how dusting past Thanos doesn’t prevent the existence of a more-recent-past Thanos.

Unless... my choice of phrasing just now may have cleared it up for me. Maybe it’s like... like MS Paint. If you’re in PowerPoint or some other higher-powered art-producing program, and you draw a line from left to right, then you decide to move the left half of it, the right will shift too. But if you’re in MS Paint, you’re not allowed to move a line once you’ve drawn it; the best you can do is erase it and draw a new one in a new spot. In which case any part of the first line that you didn’t specifically erase remains unchanged. It’s no longer connected to the new line (the new “past”) but I guess since it’s already been drawn, it no longer depends on the past for its existence?

But then how the heck did Steve end up on that park bench? That was obviously a direct result of his decision to stay in the past. So his manipulation of the past DID affect the present in that regard. Also, what does that do to people living through the disconnect? I really thought from the Ancient One’s description that parallel universes were things that only happened when Infinity Stones were removed from the timeline, but maybe they’re the only explanation here.

This is all very important to me, FYI, because my half-baked Stucky fix-it idea involves Steve bringing down Hydra and getting Bucky back in the 50s, so.

.......But parallel universes can’t be the answer, because how does Steve end up on that park bench. The universe where he married Peggy is clearly the same as the one they started in.

He TOTALLY looped Bucky in on his stay-in-the-past plan, btw, this is canon. No other reason for “I’ll miss you, buddy.” Bucky recognized the back of his hundred-year-old head immediately. I bet they discussed making Sam the next Captain America. (Think about it -- Steve had no guarantee he’d live long enough to reach that day. Peggy is seven years dead by this point.)

 I was going to put general reactions as well, but I’ll split it into two posts.

WOW.

Omg I’m so happy right now.

I’m in the last week of my degree, I’m going for an associate’s in web development (and this program and all the crap they’ve pulled on my class has been a SHIT SHOW but that’s for another post), and we have one class that basically the entire class is one big group project.  We’re supposed to be making some website for the school’s IT classes.

The whole class has been awful, the instructors kept dragging their feet with it to the point that we didn’t even have our first assignment in the class until midterms and didn’t get to the point where we could actually start coding until the 2nd week of April (we were supposed to be able to work on the project all semester long), so it’s been HECTIC and confusing and everything is rushed.

We got divided into 2 groups, one group doing the student side of the website and one group doing the faculty/staff side of the website.  I’m doing the student side with 2 guys, one who literally seems to not know a single thing about web development and one who is decent enough with the backend but has horrible taste when it comes to the front end.  Works fine for me bc I’ve been using html/css since I was 12 so I’m fine with doing the front end stuff, he can do the database, and the other guy can just keep constantly sending us messages about how he doesn’t know what to do and then make a terrible powerpoint that I end up having to re-make anyway.  Works alright.

Well I’ve been freaking out lately about how there just is NOT enough time to get this project done.  It’s due Friday, and we don’t have a single page fully completed (the home page is ALMOST all the way completed now, just need the database connectivity, but we still need to do 2-3 more pages as well).  But omg.  I just stumbled upon the other group’s page and I am now SO FREAKIN HAPPY.  I’m literally elated.  I feel 100x better about our project.   This is what our homepage looks like (I smudged out anything that said the school’s name cuz I’m paranoid):

Not great of course, but it’s not terrible at least.  It follows the style guide provided by the school in terms of font choice and colors.  I used bootstrap so it looks a little more put together.  Not a pro website but good enough for 2 years of barely being taught anything by this joke of a program.  

It’s the only page we have done right now, but the others all use the same style sheet and the header/nav and footer are identical on every page, so even if we can’t get all the content added to the other pages, at least the layout will make it look somewhat done.  But I was still worried about not getting a good grade because of how little time we had to finish and the fact that we couldn’t go in depth (like until 10 mins ago I was sitting here worrying about how the website doesn’t look great on mobile and how I don’t know if I’ll have enough time to make a mobile version). I am ECSTATIC.  Honestly I really hope for their sake that this was just some crude first attempt and they’ve made tremendous improvements and just haven’t yet uploaded them.  I mean I do feel bad because normally I wouldn’t want to see my classmates do poorly but gods I really needed that confidence boost.  

I’ve learned from past solo projects that with the instructors at this school, if you make something look nice, they’ll generally give you an A even if you don’t do all the requirements, because they’re so impressed at your design skills.  

My first semester web design class I literally waited til the last minute, did the entire page in about 6 hours, forgot to include some required things, TOLD my instructor that I forgot to include those things on my project review and for the question that asked what grade we feel we should get I said a B, and she literally said something along the lines of “yeah I know you didn’t do all the requirements but I’m giving you 100% anyway because it looks like you put a lot of effort into it” (I didn’t.  I could have done WAAAAAY better).

2nd semester we had one big project that was the final project for 3 of our classes.  We needed a C# program that was connected to a database, and then we needed to make a javascript heavy webpage that was along the same theme as our program.  I focused so much on making my C# program perfect that I ran out of time to do my javascript project.  I literally had nothing.  During presentations I saw some of the programs my classmates made, and none of them even bothered to change the default font and window color, let alone use images like I did.  Got an A for all 3 classes.

So I’m hoping the instructors will just continue their pattern of being wowed by basic css skills and a bit of photoshop knowledge and hopefully we’ll get a good grade even if we don’t finish everything.  

God I really feel so much better after seeing that.  I’m a horrible person.  I shouldn’t be feeling better because my classmates aren’t doing well.  But I just can’t help it.
