Eighteen year old Steve Harrington gets arrested for vandalism.
Nineteen year old Eddie Munson gets picked up for smoking weed.
Thankfully, both are picked up by Chief Hopper, who pulls enough strings so they can serve their time via community service volunteering for The Big Brother Big Sister Program.
Dustin's a mild-to-moderate level genius eleven year old. He and his mom are new to town and he's having a hard time making friends after his dad left them. Based on similar likes and interests, he's paired with Eddie.
Max is an eleven year old spit-fire with a strong distaste for authority. Her mom uprooted her from California to live with a step father who drinks and an older brother who loathes her. Based on general attitude problems and unwillingness to cooperate with every other Big she's been assigned, she's paired with Steve.
When the organization hosts social hour once a week, Dustin always goes looking for Max. She's annoyed by him, but she's annoyed by everyone. So when she meets El and the boys, Max makes sure to drag Dustin along with her.
Steve can't stand Eddie. Not only is Steve struggling to wrangle Max into liking him (or even just listening when he talks) but he's forced to deal with Eddie the more their kids spend time together. The guy's a prick, just a huge, judgmental asshole with a superiority complex a mile wide. He's practically perfect for Dustin.
Eddie resents everything about Steve. Eddie's constantly on the verge of a sensory melt down every second he spends with Dustin, and every moment with The Party means more time with the ex-jock, wannabe has-been, who gets away with whatever he wants because of daddy's pretty silver spoon in his mouth. No wonder Max has an attitude problem.

@aroace-get-out-of-my-face @thefallenangel2008 @ravmycupine
just wanted to add some thoughts to the memory vial/brain dead au (or whatever we're calling it)
because of course ford's guilt about using the memory gun on stan is so much worse than it is in canon, not just for the obvious reasons but also because like
this wasn't the plan
Stan agreed to have his memories erased—of course he did, the whole thing was his idea. But he didn't know he was going to die. Granted, I feel like Stan probably still would've been willing to make that sacrifice if he had known that. But I don't think Ford would've.
Ford just thought he was turning his brother into an amnesiac, and even then he almost couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger. And of course he knew it was going to hurt, having Stan look at him like he's a stranger, but at least that's the outcome he was preparing himself for.
He was not prepared to see Stan's body topple over on its side, his unblinking eyes staring blankly ahead. Ford rushes to his brother's aid, grabbing him by the shoulders, trying to rouse him, calling his name (except, he wouldn't know his own name anymore, would he?). Stan's not moving. He's not breathing. Oh God, he's not breathing. Ford glances at the memory gun on the ground next to them, and horror washes over him as he realizes what he's done. The gun erased more than just memories, it erased everything. Stan's brain was a floppy drive and Ford was the magnet, wiping it clean and leaving it broken beyond repair.
No, no, this wasn't the plan. Time to call off the con. This wasn't supposed to happen. Stop, cut, abort mission, abort mission!
But it's too late. What's done is done, and he can't take it back.
Oh God, I killed him.
Sobbing now, Ford mutters choked-out apologies, first to Stan's body as he holds him tight—and again at his grave after he's buried. And the apologies start up anew every time he visits.
As the years go on, Ford is haunted by all the what-ifs that might've saved his brother's life. What if he had thought to type "Stanley Pines memories" into the memory gun instead of just "Stanley Pines", would it have kept his essential brain functions intact? Hell, what if he typed in "Bill Cipher"? Would that have been enough to kill the bastard and still let Stanley keep most of his memories and, more importantly, his life?
Ford doesn't know the answer to that question. And he'll never know. Because as much as he longs for it, he'll never have that chance to go back and do it differently.

If you don't mind sharing (I understand if so) I'd love to know how you do the weathered fresco look! I tried to do smth similar in my own art recently and it... didn't work how I wanted xD
Hi, I don't mind! It's mostly thanks to a couple of cool brushes I happen to have. I tried some other methods of drawing or painting some texture and cracks but in the end just drew line art with my crispy pencil-like brush and colored with flat colours:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then painted texture in greyscale with neat oil/acrylic brushstroke imitating brushes and put that on "soft light" layer mode and 70% opacity. Kind of simple but still looking a bit like plaster that has been painted on.
The last mentioned paint brushes are for Krita and HMM I really tried to look where I had downloaded those but they are either a) made into Krita default brushes and not separately downloadable (but Krita is free program and you would get them with that) or b) behind a paywall with a bundle of other brushes you could download with some painting lessons? maybe? But like, I have the brush set with this and five similar paintstroke like brushes if anyone is interested in these and wants me to send them an email or google drive download link etc. whatever would feel least shady link to open.

do u have any links or advice on how to learn to make gifs? yours are really cool
when you start out you think to yourself “there’s gotta be an easier way to do this it’s taking forever” but the simple fact is that doing something impractical and time consuming is how you discover your own shortcuts and get more skilled with the program you use. And then you wake up one day and realize you have a professional level of proficiency in a graphic design software from making shitposts and anime gifs over the years to impress strangers on the internet. It feels .

It kills me that I can’t actually talk to Nick Valentine because if I could I would tell him that the identity crisis he’s going through is actually a very human experience. The way he talks about his predecessor strongly resembles the way people talk about their parents. They wonder about how much of themselves is really them and how much is just how their parents raised them. They wonder who they even are outside of their parent’s influence and what they’re supposed to become. And ultimately the answer is to take the tools and instruction that were given to you by your parents and to do even better with them. And Nick comes so close to realizing this. But there’s a sort of bitter tone when he insists that the good he does now is his own. I wish I could help him reconcile with his “father”. I wish I could tell him that his predecessor would be proud of him. That the original Nick would be so proud that a synth chose to use his knowledge and skills to help others and to finish the job that he couldn’t 200 years ago.

Found some stories from people who realized their SRA/repressed memory therapists were a bunch of quacks. Lots of CWs for talk of severe abuse and some occasional disturbing activities. If you can stomach it, it's worth a read because it shows just how bad these therapists could get with malpractice and quackery. If you don't want to read the whole thing, here's some key takeaways:
Many therapists just decided their patients had repressed memories. The patients were not allowed to question or disagree with this. The therapists basically flexed their professional authority and told them they were just in denial. Former patient Deborah David described her own experience as being like constantly told that she had once seen a bear climbing a candy cane, told that other people had seen bears on candy canes, and constantly being asked leading questions about her experiences with bears on candy canes, and told that she was in denial if she said she'd never seen one.
Not all patients appear to have been put under hypnosis, but the therapists' insistence that terrible things must have happened to them and their insistence that the only way to heal was to "remember" all of it basically had a number of patients just imagining up all the horrible scenarios they could think of. Former patient Laura Pasley realized after getting out that a number of her "memories" actually came from the book Sybil, the movie Deranged, and from a story she'd written when she was seventeen.
(Worth noting here that a study showed that people who believe they have past lives are more likely to forget where they learned information. It would make a lot of sense if many people who "remembered" SRA under therapists like these have the same issue.)
Many patients were told that their bodies stored memory of this alleged repressed trauma, and any physical sensation they felt was a "body memory" surfacing. So for a hypothetical example, someone who experienced an aching ankle might be told that this is their body "remembering" parental abuse. A patient might imagine a scenario where a parent broke their ankle, and the therapist would treat this as a "recovered" memory.
A number of patients were diagnosed with MPD (as it was called at the time) regardless of whether they initially showed any symptoms. Patients were pushed into "uncovering" these alters that allegedly remembered all the abuse. One patient (Robert Wilson) actually began acting out the alters his therapist told him he had outside of the therapist's office, in some very harmful and destructive ways. (CW for prostitution and animal death if you want to read his story.)
Another patient (Nell Charette) said that while her therapy was ongoing, she had "eight different people telling [her] what to do."
Another patient (Susan) reports:
I mapped an elaborate system, virtually every emotional state or conflicting world view was an alter, plus the male protector and little girl and little boy that went with it. There were sets of 12 for every ego state, complete with names. In the end, I had about 200 "alters." ... Now along with all these alters is the question of how did they get here? Now, we've all heard the story that you can't be this way without severe, repeated, sexual or physical trauma from before you were 5. I'm really pissed about this part, because look how they did this: 1. Your symptoms mean you have MPD, the first step to getting better is to admit this. There is no other thing this could be; if it walks like a duck it's a duck. 2. Since you have MPD, you had to have been sexually/physically/ritually abused. There is no other way you could have this, so you need to admit it to get better. 3. You have to bring these "memories" forward to get better.
This confirms exactly what I've been saying for months: that the mythology of SRA and Project Monarch-type alter programming permits any uncomfortable feeling, any unwanted impulse, and any conflicting beliefs to be attributed to an alter, and therefore to trauma-based mind control, extreme abuse, or whatever you want to call it.
Robert's unfortunate case also confirms that if you go telling a sufficiently unstable person that they have certain alters that do certain things, they will effectively develop them. (This is why convincing a child that they might have a prostitute alter is not only unethical, but also incredibly dangerous!)
If you try and make yourself uncover certain alters, or if someone convinces you that you have them, you will almost certainly "find" them. The simple act of imagining an alter can be enough to make your brain start generating one, or at least something that resembles one close enough to convince people like these therapists.
Many of these former patients describe their mental health deteriorating as their "therapy" progressed. Many who came in without severe issues were completely dysfunctional by the time they left, and if they did have issues when they started, they were exacerbated. This was treated as a part of the healing process, with patients being told that "you have to get worse before you get better" and "the only way out is through."
As retractor Stephanie Krauss put it:
They get hold of this impressive-sounding theory and it goes through some metamorphosis in their minds and is transformed into fact. Then they go treat patients with this new information that only causes more havoc in the lives of persons with normal problems. They have this zeal to treat a disorder that doesn't even exist-at least, not until after treatment starts, and that's when the suffering really begins.
I know brainwashing techniques, and what these people experienced was 100% brainwashing. Each patient had their very sense of self torn apart and each was led to believe that they couldn't trust their own minds. They were led to believe that they had a serious problem that only the therapist - the one with all the power - could fix. They were only "healing" when they complied with the therapist's desires. They were told to cut off anyone who challenged the therapist's narrative.
In other words, the real programmers, the real practitioners of mind control, were the therapists.
